In their first few years in the New World, the Pilgrims faced the challenges of not only some rough winters, but also that of small harvests. At one point, William Bradford records in his diary a period of four or five days when they just had a few kernels of corn to eat. Over the course of time, this became a legend of there being a ration of five kernels of corn each day. So, the practice developed of placing five kernels of corn on each plate on Thanksgiving Day. This served as a reminder to the Pilgrims — and to others — of all God has provided and to give thanks. Each kernel of corn carries its own special significance: • The 1st kernel reminds us of the autumn beauty around us. • The 2nd kernel reminds us of our love for one another. • The 3rd kernel reminds us of God’s love and care for us. • The 4th kernel reminds us of the faithfulness of our friends. • The 5th kernel reminds us that we are a free people.
