Deacon of the Week: Don Smith 928-642-2425

THIS WEEK MARCH 29– APRIL 4 As a result of the dangers associated with the Covid-19 Coronavirus, all First Southern gatherings are canceled through March 29th. This includes Sunday morning and evening worship services, Sunday School, Kidz4Christ, Choir rehearsals, Tuesday and Thursday Women’s Bible Studies, Tuesday Men’s Bible Study, Awana, Wednesday evening Bible Study, Sister’s Quilting, Tae Kwon Do, ESL, Good News Club, and any other ministries involving groups of people being together. This is being done in accordance with the recommendations from the CDC, from the governor’s office of the State of Arizona, and from the White House update Monday, March 16. Pastor Terrell

“For what I received I passed on to you as of first importance: that Christ died for our sins according to the Scriptures, that he was buried, that he was raised on the third day according to the Scriptures.” ~ 1 Corinthians 15:3-4 (NIV) ~ We’re quarantined. We’re closed. We’re canceled. It’s as if a giant stone — that no one can move — has been rolled in place to seal us into a reality we hate. Take All-Powerful God out of the equation — and that’s what we have. 2,000 years ago — they rolled a giant stone in place to seal up the tomb of a crucified Jesus. FINISHED!

It’s said that Thomas Jefferson could not accept the miraculous elements of scripture, so he edited his own special version of the New Testament in which all references to the supernatural were deleted. The gospels, therefore, contain no miracles — only the moral teachings of Christ. Jefferson’s gospel account closes with these words: “There laid they Jesus and rolled a great stone at the mouth of the sepulcher and departed.”

Thank God that’s not how the story really ends! Easter Sunday is coming very soon, just two weeks away. We don’t know at this moment if we will be able to worship and celebrate our risen Savior together here in our Worship Center — or if we will still be online only. But worship we will! The message of the resurrection — the message of God’s infinite power is not quarantined. It is not closed. It is not canceled.
