Hello everyone! The other day as I was considering the news here and abroad I thought of the song “Blessed Be Your Name.” Not too long ago the part of the song that says “Blessed be Your name when the sun’s shining down on me; when the world’s all as it should be, blessed be Your name” seemed like the appropriate lyrics for the majority of the population, at least in the U.S. Then along came the rise of the coronavirus and its spread across the globe, and now we’ve moved to “Blessed be Your name when I’m found in the desert place; though I walk through the wilderness, blessed be Your name.” With the uncertainty we’re faced with right now it’s easy to focus on the change from “all as it should be” to “walk through the wilderness” rather than concentrating on “blessed be Your name.”
The chorus of “Blessed Be Your Name” keeps the focus where it belongs: Blessed be the name of the Lord, blessed be Your name. Blessed be the name of the Lord, blessed be Your glorious name. After considering the chorus I was curious how many times “Blessed be the name of the Lord” appeared in scripture. To my surprise, the number is just two. I was expecting many more, but that exact phrase only appears in Psalm 113:2 and in Job 1:21. I had often thought of Job when we sing this song, and the results of my search suggested to me that Matt Redman was indeed thinking of Job when he wrote it. Here is the phrase from Job in context: Then Job arose, and rent his mantle, and shaved his head, and fell down upon the ground, and worshipped, and said, Naked came I out of my mother's womb, and naked shall I return thither: the Lord gave, and the Lord hath taken away; blessed be the name of the Lord. In all this Job sinned not, nor charged God foolishly.

In the present day we are seeing the world’s financial markets in a tailspin as well as loss of life due to a new virus. In Job’s day he had just suffered his own personal financial crisis as well as the loss of his children. Rather than concentrate on what he had lost, Job worshipped God. He was sad and he mourned, but above all he worshipped. Whatever our concerns, whatever we’ve lost, we can challenge ourselves to be like Job and worship the Lord. Blessed be the name of the Lord!
