“For everything there is a season, a time for every activity under heaven. A time to be born and a time to die. A time to plant and a time to harvest.” ~ Ecclesiastes 3:1-2 (NLT) ~ It’s that time of the year for lists. You know the ones I mean. Lists such as… “The Best of the Year” — “The Worst of the Year” — and so forth. They have been on the T.V. and the radio. They are in the newspapers — and they are on the internet. Mostly, I just tend to ignore them — but one headline caught my eye the other day. It was a list of “100 Things Turning 100 in 2020.” Now I ask you, who wouldn’t click through a list like that? So, I did! The very first on the list was not our own John C. Sorry John, you’re not quite there yet! It was the 19th Amendment — giving women the right to vote. Not a bad place to begin. Then came such things Agatha Christie’s first novel, the birth of the Yellow Cab Manufacturing Company and the NFL. There was Rubbermaid. How many of you have 100-year-old Rubbermaid storage containers in your kitchen? Snap-on Tools got their start in 1920 along with Band-Aids — presumably after the first Snap-on Tool injury. AMC Theaters — with $20 boxes of popcorn and $25 sodas were born to show movies like “The Mark of Zorro” and “Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde” that premiered that year. Evenflo wasn’t making car seats for children just yet — but they began making baby bottles and Raggedy Andy dolls came along to entertain those young kids. Perhaps one of the most important things to come out of 1920 was the discovery of Insulin. Talk about a game changer for people’s lives! There were many good things that came about 100 years ago — and some not so good, depending on your point of view. The ACLU was born, the Roaring 20’s was birthed, and Haribo Gummy Bears and the Baby Ruth Candy Bar came out — making Insulin all the more important. Of course, 1920 was no exception. Old things go away and new things come along every year. If Jesus tarries, there will be a “100 Things Turning 100 in 2120.” That is the cycle of life. We all experience it every century, every decade, every year, every day. Everything changes — some for the good — some for the not so good. The same can be said of churches. There are things that are old — and yet vital to who we are. The essentials of our faith that never change. Then there are methods that may change. Beginning this month, our church will be joining with several other Arizona Southern Baptist churches in a 6-month REFOCUS process in which our ReFocus Vision Team will develop a sharper vision of who we are to be and where we are to be going in the future. I covet your earnest prayers for this team and the ultimate outcome. May it bring continuing praise and glory to God. Blessings on your week as you consider some of the changes that may be taking place in your life — remembering that there is a time and place for every activity under heaven. Meanwhile, I pray that you have a blessed new year. Pastor Terrell
