The Magnificent Obsession: Embracing the God-Filled Life by Anne Graham Lotz

Worship Pastor Scott Terry: 928-458-6470 PastorScott@firstsouthernpv.org

Are you restless in your spirit? Is your heart yearning to know if there’s something more to this life? More purpose? More joy? More satisfaction? Anne Graham Lotz has known this struggle, too. As she searched for answers to her heart’s yearning and emptiness, Abraham walked out of the pages of her Bible and into her life. Abraham’s life was full of twists and turns, riches and losses, deceit and redemption, failure and success. Nevertheless, his story holds the key to satisfying a longing heart: embracing a God-filled life.

“Teach us to number our days aright, that we may gain a heart of wisdom.” ~ Psalm 90:12 (NIV) ~

It’s Leap Day tomorrow. I am writing on Friday morning the 28th — on what should be the last day of the month. But no — someone added another day to February! King David said; “Teach us to number our days aright.” I don’t know about you, but I have a hard-enough time doing that with 365 days in a year without adding an additional day! You’ve probably heard someone struggling with their finances complain that there is more month left over at the end of their pay check. For me, there is more work left over at the end of this work week. Unfortunately, there are still just seven days this week, so I suppose I won’t really get to appreciate the extra day this year until December 31st.

A thought crossed my mind this week. What would — or what should I do with an extra day this year? Everyone of us will receive this gift of an extra day. So, we all have to answer that question. Will we use the day for play? For work? For doing something new? For completing a necessary task that we have postponed for too long? Or, might use the day to take on what we may consider an impossible task that we have only dreamed about?

St. Francis of Assisi gave this advice:

MON - THURS

8:30 PM - 2:30 PM

“Start by doing what’s necessary, then do what’s possible, and suddenly you are doing the impossible.” I imagine we all have a few projects on our to-do list that could qualify, at this stage, as impossible. Or maybe they just seem that way — requiring more energy and more resources than we can currently muster. Whether the task is impossible or merely feels that way, the solution is the same. Do what must be done, then do what can be done. Eventually, looking back, you’ll see that you’ve accomplished what they said couldn’t be done.
