At the age of 19, Chastity Patterson of Newport, Arkansas lost a man very close to her. He was not her biological father, but that’s what she called him: Dad. As she struggled to move on with her life, she got in the habit of sending him a text message every day — telling him about her day — her problems — her life. During this time, she had survived cancer, graduated from college, and suffered through a heartbreaking relationship, and ultimately found true love. Every day she would send a text message to her dad, telling him about it. On October 25, 2019 — the day before the fourth anniversary of his death — she let him know she was thinking of him. “Hey, Dad, it’s me. Tomorrow’s going to be a tough day again!” And then she received a response. The man who had been assigned her dad’s old number had been receiving Chastity’s messages every day. Finally, after four years, he decided it was time to let her know. He said, “My name is Brad and I lost my daughter in a car wreck August 2014, and your messages have kept me alive. When you text me, I know it’s a message from God.” He continued: “I have listened to you for four years, and I have watched you grow more than anyone. I have wanted to text you back for years, but I didn’t want to break your heart. I’m sorry you have to go through this, but if it makes it any better, I am very proud of you!” What are some lessons to be learned from Chastity’s story? • • • •
God often speaks through others. God sends people into our lives to offer the encouragement we need. Your voice is not unheard. When you have the opportunity to hear someone pour out their heart, stop and listen. • God can answer our prayers in amazing and unexpected ways — so don’t be too surprised when God chooses to do so. Just ask the shepherds on that last one. Front row seats at the greatest outdoor concert in history — announcing the Savior’s birth. Blessings on your week. Don’t be afraid to listen — and speak — as you have the opportunity to touch someone’s life with a word of encouragement. I look forward to seeing you in worship this Sunday as we look at the final instalment of “Once Upon a Time in Bethlehem.” Pastor Terrell
