As the Head of The King
Alfred School's Lower School, with children from Reception to Year 6, it’s my job to ensure there are clear structures which allow students to have their voices heard. One way we do this is by rethinking traditional parent-teacher progress meetings.
Traditionally in these meetings, the grown-ups talk about a child’s progress and attitude to learning. Vital conversations take place without the most important person present We do things differently. Each term students invite their parents in and, along with their teacher, they show their work, talk about their progress and measure it against goals they themselves have set. They’re asked to reflect on their learning behaviours, celebrate successes and talk about how they can improve going forward. The children are expected to have an opinion about their own learning, to take responsibility for it and work as part of a team with their teacher and their significant adults to improve it.
We routinely see how children feeling heard as part of these learning conversations, and the ownership they feel of their experience, leads to a positive classroom environment for everyone.

The Early Years Foundation Stage is shifting further toward child-centred approaches reflecting that play is not a distraction from learning... it is learning.
Young children thrive in environments that are safe, stimulating and full of opportunities for exploration. Whether it’s splashing in puddles, baking biscuits or chatting before bed, these reallife experiences are the true foundations of literacy. They spark curiosity, support social and emotional development and help children build the confidence to express themselves.

children to long-term musical success since 1995
Before children can read or write, they need to feel confident in their thoughts and their ability to make sense what they see and hear. Literacy begins long before the first book is opened. It starts with expression and connection. When a child feels that their ideas matter and someone is listening, they become more motivated to communicate. That’s where play shines. Whether they’re forming letters in flour or retelling a favourite story with puppets, children are exploring language through creative play. These moments lay the groundwork for phonemic awareness, vocabulary growth and narrative understanding, essential components of early literacy. Importantly, these skills develop in ways that are meaningful, relevant and fun.

a cardboard post office provides children with valuable vocabulary, opportunities to problem-solve and space to imagine. These everyday experiences are filled with chances to use language with purpose, something even the bestdesigned app can’t fully replicate.
Conversations that count
One of the most powerful tools in developing early literacy is something every parent has – conversation. Talking with your child throughout the day helps develop both expressive – what they say– and receptive – what they understand –language. These conversations don’t have to be elaborate. Describe what you’re doing as you cook. Ask your child to name objects as you tidy up. Tell stories about your day while on a walk. Encourage your child to share their thoughts, ask questions and invent stories. These interactions build vocabulary, deepen comprehension and foster a love for language.
Five easy ways to support literacy at home
Go on a daily sound scavenger hunt to explore phonics.
Read the same book in silly voices to build expression and intonation.
Bake together, talk through steps and write a menu or shopping list to show how we use reading and writing.
Form letters with playdough or sand to strengthen fine motor skills for handwriting.
Sing nursery rhymes and invent new verses. This boosts phonological awareness and future reading success.

"I saw you in Families magazine and..."
By Tanya Freeman
My husband and I thrived at state school and believed our son, Freddy, would too. Besides, school fees were out of the question. So how did Freddy ended up being educated privately?
By chance. At the time Freddy was offered his state school place, I was providing marketing expertise to a small pre-prep school, the equivalent of an infant school. I met with them the day after Freddy was offered his state school place – our sixth choice – and happened to mention it. His place was at a very large school and we immediately felt that Freddy, reserved and more comfortable with adults than children, would feel overwhelmed.
I was astonished to receive an email from this pre-prep school a few days later asking whether I would be interested in a fully funded school place for Freddy! We are not people who are serendipitously in the "right place at the right time". Despite our principles, we felt that this offer was too good to miss. Did we have reservations? Yes. We weren’t sure if our son would fit in. What would happen when he turned 8 and returned to the state system? The school reassured us that there was every likelihood that Freddy would take the 7+, an exam I was hardly aware of, and that we would find a prep school willing to help assist us financially at the next stage too. Freddy thrived and received offers from four schools at 7+. Taking the advice of his school, we discussed financial assistance with each. Disclosing our income at one school, we were asked: "Is that each?" It wasn’t. It dawned on us that
perhaps you didn’t have to have an exceptionally low income to be considered for a partial bursary.
Many of our peers, who earn comfortably above the average UK family income but can’t afford to pay full school fees, don’t realise that a private school bursary could be an option for them too. So my advice to anyone unhappy with their state school offer or wanting to cast the net a little wider, is: "Don’t be afraid to ask."
Bursary essentials
Roughly one in three children at an independent school is on some form of fee “remission” and private schools actively canvass for bursary applications. It’s not just senior schools that offer them, plenty of prep schools do too.
A bursary may be taken away if your financial circumstances significantly improve or you might be granted one if you fall on hard times.
A bursary is not a scholarship. Scholarships are awarded to talented children but are rarely worth more than 10% of fees.
⏺ Tanya Freeman is a writer and mother of Freddy, living in London.
Research local private schools that offer bursaries. Don’t be afraid to call their Admissions Offices and ask if you see nothing on the school website.
Ask schools you are interested in about bursaries two years before you need one and prepare to be means tested. Start your private school journey early. Don’t wait for senior school as it can be hard for children to catch up.

As children head back to school, a common challenge many face is a dip in confidence. This can hold them back from reaching their full potential both socially and academically. Perform is the perfect weekly outlet for fun, energy and self-expression with its confidencebuilding classes in drama, dance and singing for 4-7s and 7-12s.
“Perform is not a stage school,” said Perform Principal, Lucy Quick.
“Our sessions are all about teaching life skills through fun, engaging activities. Every class is designed to develop what we call the 4Cs: confidence, concentration, coordination and communication.”
Each term ends with a performance, giving every child a chance to shine. And before your child even begins, Perform offers a free trial class, with time spent discussing your child’s specific need.

Having a “give it a go” attitude is key in learning. Odette Garvey, Principal of Stagecoach Highgate and Hampstead, explains more.
"Singing, dancing and acting are all taught skills that are developed through hard work and building up skill sets over time. As students work and develop their confidence with these areas, they are given lots of positive reinforcement.
"All of this contributes to a growth mindset which they can then take into the school classroom. The emphasis on of having a positive attitude to trying again, if something doesn’t work the first time, sees students have a healthy relationship with their schooling, creating a positive attitude to their learning environment," she said.
“At Stagecoach, we’re so proud to offer our students those opportunities and to support the next generation both in and out of the classroom,” said Odette. Find out about free 2-week trials at stagecoach.co.uk/highgate
