Snack-tember 2025

The British Nutrition Foundation is transforming its usual Healthy Eating Week into a month-long event.

Snack-tember will be taking place in September 2025!

The aim of Snack-tember is to help children and young people have healthier, more sustainable snacks.

Digital resources will be available including activity ideas, recipes and exciting materials to help children and their parents explore current snacking choices, and learn about, make and try new snack options.

The Foundation wants to improve children and young people’s knowledge, skills, confidence and motivation, so that they can make and choose healthier, more sustainable snacks.

The aim is to help children and young people choose and make snacks that have: MORE vegetables and fruit, MORE wholegrains, beans and pulses and LESS saturated fat, salt and sugars. These are, according to the Foundation the key contributors to healthier, more sustainable snacking

Experts call for a ban on ‘no ball games signs’

A group of play experts is calling for an end to ‘no ball games’ signs and stricter protections for school playtime, arguing that children are being driven indoors and onto digital devices.

The Raising the Nation Play Commission, after a year-long inquiry, warns that outdoor play in England has halved in a generation. The commission blames increased street traffic, fears about crime, and public spaces that discourage young people from gathering.

The group describes this trend as an ‘anti-play culture’ and urges policymakers to take action to reverse it, citing concerns about children’s physical and mental health. In response, the government says it is working with experts to create a framework that would improve access to activities outside of school. Find out more at www.centreforyounglives.org.uk

Older fathers on the rise

The number of babies born to older fathers is on the rise, says the Office for National Statistics (ONS). Notable examples include Rod Stewart, who became a dad at 65 and Robert De Niro at 79. Professor Allan Pacey, a fertility expert, notes men over 40 are about half as fertile as men in their mid-20s, making this trend particularly interesting.

Births to parents under 30 have dropped, as more people delay starting families. The biggest decrease is among mothers under 20, with births falling by nearly 5%.Despite a global trend of declining birth rates, England saw a slight increase in 2024, with 567,708 live births - a 0.7% rise from the previous year. Greg Ceely of the ONS said the overall rise reverses a recent downward trend, though delayed parenthood is becoming more common.

ASK THE EXPERT

A friend advised Animal Assisted Therapy for my autistic son, 7. Can you explain what AAT is and how does it help? Sally from Reigate

Families ask Tiffany, Director of Kids Critters Ltd, Dorking based SEN specialist working with children, adolescents and animals.

Animal-Assisted Therapy (AAT) is a structured, goaloriented therapeutic approach that incorporates trained animals—such as dogs, rabbits, lizards into treatment sessions, guided by a licensed professional. It is especially beneficial for children with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD), offering emotional, social, and behavioural support in a calming and engaging environment.

For autistic children, AAT helps improve social and communication skills. Interacting with animals is often less intimidating than interacting with people, making it easier for children to initiate conversations, follow instructions, and express emotions.

AAT also helps reduce anxiety and stress, thanks to the soothing presence of animals. Petting or simply being near a calm animal can lower cortisol levels and promote relaxation, which is especially helpful for children with sensory sensitivities or emotional regulation challenges.

Additionally, AAT enhances focus and motivation. Tasks that might feel difficult in traditional therapy become more engaging when animals are involved. Children are often more willing to participate when the session includes feeding, grooming, or playing with an animal.

It’s important to note that AAT is not a replacement for speech, behavioural, or occupational therapy - it works best as a complement. The therapy should be delivered by professionals trained in both human therapy and animal handling, ensuring safety and effectiveness.

In short, AAT offers a compassionate and motivating way to help autistic children grow emotionally, socially, and behaviourally through the healing connection with animals.

If you have any questions you would like to ask Tiffany, you can call her on 07881 778717 or, visit www.kidscritters.co.uk for further detail.

Meet the Head interview with Gemma Mitchell, Head of Oakhyrst Grange School

Families chats with Gemma Mitchell, who is taking up the helm at Oakhyrst Grange School this September.

Gemma Mitchell takes up the role of Head at Oakhyrst Grange School in September 2025, bringing with her over two decades of experience in primary education.

Known for her thoughtful leadership and child-centred approach, Gemma is passionate about nurturing young learners both academically and emotionally. She strongly believes in the power of curiosity, kindness, and high expectations to help children thrive.

Committed to preserving the school’s family ethos while embracing innovation, Gemma is excited to lead Oakhyrst Grange into its next chapter - one where every child feels seen, valued, and ready to make their mark on the world.

What attracted you to Oakhyrst Grange School?

I’m absolutely thrilled to be joining Oakhyrst Grange - a school with a strong sense of community, well-rooted values, wonderful facilities and a long-standing reputation for academic excellence and pastoral care.

From my very first visit, I was struck by the warmth of the school and the calm confidence of the children. It was clear that this is a place where kindness, curiosity and high standards sit side by side. There’s a genuine care for each child as an individual, and a real commitment to helping them thrive.

What future plans do you have for Oakhyrst Grange School?

I’m particularly passionate about enriching the curriculum through creativity, outdoor learning, and giving pupils a meaningful voice in their education. My goal is for every child to leave Oakhyrst Grange feeling proud of who they are and excited about what lies ahead.

How do you think a head can make a real difference to an individual pupil?

A head teacher sets the tone of the school - and when that tone is one of care, high expectations and genuine belief in every child’s potential, it can be transformative. By creating a culture where children feel safe, seen and celebrated, a head can help them flourish not only academically but emotionally and socially too.

What advice would you give to parents choosing a school?

Trust your instincts. Visit the school, meet the staff, and most importantly, watch how the children interact. Do they seem happy, engaged and confident? Think about your own child - their

personality, interests, and needs - and ask whether the school environment will allow them to thrive. It’s also worth asking about how the school approaches wellbeing and pastoral care, as this is just as vital as academics in the early years of education. Ultimately, a great school is one where your child will feel known, valued and inspired to grow.

What are the qualities of a great teacher?

Great teachers are passionate, adaptable and deeply empathetic. They have a strong grasp of their subject but, more importantly, they understand how children learn and what makes them tick. They build strong relationships based on respect and are endlessly patient and encouraging. A great teacher knows when to challenge, when to nurture and how to make every child feel capable and important. And of course, a good sense of humour always helps!

What is your biggest challenge at present?

For me, the biggest challenge - and opportunity - is making sure we strike the right balance for children growing up in an increasingly fast-paced, digital world. It’s about helping them stay grounded, curious and connected to themselves and others, while also preparing them to thrive in a future we can’t fully predict.

At Oakhyrst Grange, that means combining strong academic foundations with creativity, emotional intelligence, and a real sense of belonging, while supporting children to grow into confident, compassionate individuals.

What did you want to be when you grew up?

As a child, I changed my mind weekly - author, archaeologist, vet, explorer - I wanted to do it all.

Being a teacher allows you to step into so many different worlds, often all in the same day! You get to inspire budding scientists, guide young writers, nurture future leaders. But more than anything, I wanted to do something that mattered. Teaching felt like a way to make a real difference — to help shape not just what children know, but who they become. And all these years later, it still feels like the most rewarding job in the world.
