FloorFriends: Learning at all levels

Denken und Lernen geschieht nicht nur im Kopf. An allen Denkprozessen ist immer auch der gesamte Körper beteiligt: Wir brauchen Bewegung, um lernen zu können. Das gilt besonders für Kinder. Kein Wunder, denn bis zum Alter von elf, zwölf Jahren organisiert sich die neuronale Vernetzung im Gehirn, und dazu braucht es ständig muskuläre Impulse. Genau solche Impulse holen sich Kinder deshalb, wo immer möglich.

Das erklärt auch, warum Kinder so gerne am Boden arbeiten – ob bäuchlings liegend, im Sitzen oder Hocken. Am Boden sind sie in ihren Bewegungsmöglichkeiten am freiesten. Hier können sie ihre Position je nach Bedarf immer wieder verändern.

Mit dem FloorFriends-Konzept fördern Schulen also die kindliche Entwicklung und abwechslungsreichen Unterricht. Der Raum bleibt wandelbar und anpassungsfähig und kann immer wieder unterschiedliche Lernorte anbieten.

Thinking and learning do not only take place in the head. The entire body is also always involved in every thought process: We need to move if we are to learn and this is particularly true of children. This comes as no surprise given that the organization of the neural networking of the brain is still becoming established up to the age of eleven or twelve years, and for this it needs constant muscular stimuli. And it is precisely these stimuli that children seek out wherever they can.

This also explains why children so enjoy working at foor-level –whether lying on their fronts, sitting or crouching. At foor level, they are most free to move in a range of different ways and change their position as they need whenever they want.

With the FloorFriends concept, schools therefore support children’s development and a varied approach to teaching. The space can be remodelled and adapted to provide a constant stream of different learning locations.

Interview with Dr. Josef Watschinger

Dr. Josef Watschinger ist seit 1994 als Schuldirektor in Südtirol tätig. Derzeitet leitet er den Schulsprengel Welsberg und ist Vorsitzender des Schulverbundes Pustertal. Seit vielen Jahren setzt er sich zudem mit dem Thema „Lernen und Raum“ auseinander. Von ihm stammt der Impuls, den VS aufgegriffen hat: Mobiliar für die Schule zu entwickeln, das das bodennahe Lernen einbezieht.

VS: Herr Dr. Watschinger, was macht einen Raum zum idealen Lernraum?

Dr. Josef Watschinger: Ich habe immer wieder erfahren, wie wichtig es ist, Kinder zu beobachten, wie sie sich in Räumen bewegen und diese in Besitz nehmen. Kinder haben ein großes Bedürfnis nach Bewegung, wissen intuitiv was ihr Körper braucht und reagieren entsprechend, wenn wir das zulassen. Kinder lieben es, den Boden als Lernort zu nutzen und sich dort ihren ganz eigenen Lernplatz zu organisieren oder es sich als Gruppe einzurichten. Die Kinder wechseln dabei von einer Position in die nächste, von Anspannung in Entspannung und umgekehrt – unbewusst gesteuert von einem „intelligenten Körper“, der weiß, was er gerade braucht.

VS: Wo und wie lernen Kinder besonders gern?

Dr. Josef Watschinger: Kinder mögen es, wenn sie Rückzugsorte vorfnden, sich irgendwo verkriechen können. Auch das entspricht einer von Natur aus angelegten Entwicklungsdynamik. Neugierig in die „Welt“ hinausgehen, Entdeckungen machen, Neues kennenlernen und sich dann auch wieder zurückziehen, um zu verarbeiten und zu „verdauen“ – damit das Erfahrene eingeordnet werden kann in die eigene „innere Welt“. Dr. Josef Watschinger has been working as headmaster in the southern Tirol since 1994. At present, he is the director of the Welsberg catchment area and chair of the Pustertal school association. For many years, he has also been deeply interested in the topic of “Learning and Space”. He was the original source of the impetus that VS has now carried forwards: To develop school furniture that includes foor-level learning.

VS: Dr. Watschinger, what makes a room into the perfect space for learning?

Dr. Josef Watschinger: Again and again, I have learned how important it is to observe children, to watch how they move in a space and take it over. Children have a great need to move, intuitively know what their bodies require and react accordingly if only we allow them to. Children love to use the foor as a learning location, organize their very own learning space there or arrange it for group work. In such spaces, children change from one position

to the next, from tense to relaxed postures and back again –unconsciously controlled by an “intelligent body” which knows what it needs at any given moment.

VS: Where and how do children particularly like to learn?

Dr. Josef Watschinger: Children like to fnd spaces they can withdraw into, somewhere they can hide away. This corresponds to another natural development dynamic. The curiosity to go out into the “world”, make discoveries, get to know new things and then withdraw again to process all this, to “digest” it – so that these experiences can be integrated in one’s own “inner world”. VS: Welche räumlichen Voraussetzungen braucht es dazu?

Dr. Josef Watschinger: Kinder bauen sich ihre Orte des Rückzugs auch gerne selbst, wenn sie das dürfen und wenn einige wenige

Dinge da sind, die sie als Bauelemente verwenden können. Kinder sind kreativ – fnden ihre eigenen Lösungen! Eine Lesehöhle, in der mit Stirnlampe gelesen werden darf oder ein Zelt bzw. eine Jurte als zusätzliche Räume im Raum – da kann kein Kind widerstehen.

Kinder klettern auch gerne auf Podeste, besteigen Stufenelemente, begeben sich auf Zwischenebenen oder „Lern-Hochsitze“, um von dort aus einen Überblick auf das Ganze zu bekommen und um das gesamte Geschehen überblicken zu können.

Die Mechanismen für Entwicklung sind in den Kindern von Natur aus angelegt. Sie aktivieren sich von selbst. Wir haben die Auf-gabe, Kindern Räume zur Verfügung zu stellen, die Entwicklung und Entfaltung ermöglichen und fördern – auch als Schule.

Gute Lernräume sind „Raum-Landschaften“ mit einem vielfältigen Anregungscharakter und einer hohen Aufenthaltsqualität. Sie sind funktional eingerichtet und unterstützen vielfältige Lernarrangements Sie ermöglichen bodennahes Lernen und bieten Rückzugsmöglichkeiten und Chill-Bereiche an. (...)

VS: What are the requirements in terms of space?

Dr. Josef Watschinger: Children like to build their retreats by themselves if they’re allowed to and if there are a few things around that they can use as building materials. Children are creative – they will fnd their own solutions! A hollow where they can read with a headtorch or a tent or yurt as an extra room within a room – something no child can resist.

Children also like to climb up onto platforms, climb steplike structures, fnd intermediate levels or “raised reading areas” so that they can look out and have an overview of everything that’s going on.

The developmental mechanisms are naturally present in children. They are activated automatically. It is our task to provide children with spaces that permit and encourage them to develop and fulfl their potential – including at school.

Good learning spaces are “room landscapes” containing many stimulations and which are pleasant to be in. They are equipped for functionality and permit many different types of learning scenario. They facilitate foor-level learning and offer places to withdraw as well as chill-out areas. (...)

Kinder schaffen sich die Lern- und Begegnungsorte, die ihrem Bedürfnis entsprechen. Dazu zählt neben höhlenartigen Behausungen auch das Lagerfeuer.

VS: Mit welchen ungewöhnlichen Lernräumen haben Sie in Ihren Schulen besonders gute Erfahrungen gemacht?

Dr. Josef Watschinger: Lernräume dürfen auch so etwas wie „Gestaltungsbaustellen“ sein, die auf Grund der Beschaffenheit des Raumes, der Flexibilität des Mobiliars und des Vorhandenseins unterschiedlichster Bauelemente möglich machen, räumliche Kompositionen aus den jeweiligen Situationen und Bedürfnissen heraus immer wieder neu zu erfnden und umzusetzen.

Besondere Elemente erhöhen den Reiz dieser Landschaften und auch die Arbeits- und Lernmotivation. Kinder lieben es beispielsweise, wenn sie sich für das Erledigen von Arbeitsaufträgen oder beim Arbeiten an Aufgaben, die sie sich selber geben, in ihr eigenes „Lernbüro“ zurückziehen können.

VS: With what unusual learning spaces have you had particularly positive experiences in your schools.

Dr. Josef Watschinger: Learning spaces can also be something like “design workshops” which make it possible, due to the characteristics of the room, the fexibility of the furniture and the presence of various building materials, to continuously invent and create new spatial arrangements to meet the current situation and needs.

Special elements increase the attractiveness of these landscapes and boost the motivation to work and learn. For example, children love to be able to withdraw into their own "learning offce" in order to do their work or to carry out the tasks that they set themselves.

Ein wichtiger Aspekt bei der Entwicklung unseres Zeltelements Leaf war: Es muss sich einfach aufbauen lassen. Die Lösung: Die Zeltelemente werden mit Magnetverschlüssen an den Magnetschnappern der Bodenmatten befestigt. Die breite Seite des Zeltelements passt genau an den langen Mattenrand, die Spitze lässt sich am gegenüberliegenden Mattenrand einklicken. Alternativ kann die Spitze auch mit der Zeltstange verbunden und aufgespannt werden. Oder sie hält über einen Einzelanbinder an jeder magnethaftenden Oberfäche, etwa an den Metallrückwänden der Regalelemente Shift+.

Leaf besteht aus aus Stretchgewebe, das zwischen zwei Glasfaserstangen verspannt ist. Wird das Zeltelement nicht benötigt, lässt es sich als faches Bündel in die Ecke stellen oder zusammengerollt in der Zubehörtasche verstauen.

One important consideration when developing our Leaf tent element was that it had to be easy to put up. The solution: The tent elements are fxed to the magnetic catches of the foor mats using magnetic fastenings. The wide side of the tent element fts exactly at the long edge of the mat and the point at the top can be clicked into the opposite edge of the mat. Alternatively, the top can also be connected to the tent pole and tensioned. Or, using an individual connector, it can be fastened to any magnetic surface, for example at the metal backs of the Shift+ shelf elements.

Leaf is made from a stretch fabric which is held taut between two glass-fbre poles. When the tent element is no longer needed, it can be bundled up fat and stowed away in the corner or rolled up and stored in the accessories bag.

Shift+ Up ist Podest und leichtes Mehrzweckmöbel, das mit allen anderen Elementen aus dem FloorFriends-Konzept und mit der Möbelserie Shift+ kombinierbar ist. Zum einen lässt es sich als Präsentationselement einsetzen. Die Elemente werden dabei zu unterschiedlichen Flächen auf maximal zwei Ebenen kombiniert und optional rundum verblendet. Damit sie nicht verrutschen, werden sie durch Horizontalverbinder miteinander gekoppelt. Darüber lassen sich die Elemente zudem gegeneinander verdrehen. Shift+ Up eignet sich aber auch als Sitzinsel, als niedriger Tisch oder als Tisch-BankKombination. Hier kommt die Wendeplatte ins Spiel: Eine Seite ist rutschhemmende Lauf-, die andere ebene Schreibfäche. Wird das Element als Tisch verwendet, lassen sich zudem Gratnells-Boxen integrieren.

Shift+ Up is both a platform and a lightweight multipurpose furniture unit which can be combined with all the other elements of the FloorFriends concepts and the Shift+ series of furniture. On the one hand, it can of course be used as a stage. To do this, the elements are combined to form different surfaces on a maximum of two levels and can also optionally be equipped with all-round screening. To stop them from slipping, they are joined to one another using horizontal connectors. In addition, the elements can also be rotated up against one another. However, Shift+Up is also suitable for use as a seating island, a low table or as a table-bench combination. This is where the reversible top comes into play: One side is non-slip and used for standing on, the other as a fat writing surface. Höhlen auf der ersten Etage – auch das lässt sich mit Leaf und den rechteckigen Elementen Shift+ Up umsetzen. Die Maße von rechteckigem Podest und Matte sind deshalb genau aufeinander abgestimmt. Perfekt kombinieren lassen sich auch die Podestelemente Shift+ Up untereinander. Aus den dreieckigen und rechteckigen Grundformen entstehen unterschiedlich große Flächen, die sich zum Beispiel für Präsentationen eignen. Seitlich kann eine Blende angebracht werden.

Zum Verstauen werden Platten und Gestelle werkzeugfrei auseinandergenommen. Die Gestelle sind so konstruiert, dass sie eng übereinander passen. Auf den Stapelwagen oder an die Seite geräumt benötigen sie nur wenig Platz.

Hollows on the frst level – that is also possible with Leaf and the rectangular Shift+ Up elements. That is why the dimensions of the rectangular platform and mat are perfectly harmonized. The Shift+ Up platform elements can also be combined perfectly with one another. The triangular and rectangular basic shapes can be combined to create surfaces of different sizes which are suitable for presentations, for example. A screen can be fxed at the side.

When the elements have to be stored away, the tops and frames can be disassembled without tools. The frames are designed to ft closely together. Cleared away onto the stacking cart or simply to one side, they take up very little space.

Die Stapelsteine und das Board eignen sich als multifunktionale Spielbaustein genauso wie als Sitzmöglichkeit oder Bewegungselement. Floor-level learning also benefts from a large number of learning and movement capabilities. The stacking stones and the board can be used as either multifunctional play elements or as seating options or activity elements. When used together with the modular units from the Shift+ series and the FloorFriends, the Leaf tent element and Shift+ Up platform make it possible to create entire learning landscapes. This makes even small rooms more attractive and opens up many opportunities for children to learn, come together, talk and play or withdraw on their own.

Die Eigentumskästen von Gratnells waren schon immer praktisch. Jedes Kind hat hier seinen privaten Stauraum, den es an die verschiedenen Arbeitsstationen mitnehmen kann. Zusammen mit Gratnells haben wir diese Kästen exklusiv für uns überarbeitet. Diese verfügen jetzt über eine Reihe neuer sinnvoller Funktionen.

Am auffälligsten ist die Aussparung für das Namensschild. Die Auszugssicherung ist jetzt direkt mit der Box verbunden und nicht mehr aufgesteckt. Dank der Rippen am Boden lassen sich ineinandergestellte Korpusse nun leicht voneinander lösen. Der Deckel liegt ringsum satt auf und kann deshalb höher belastet werden. Im Stapel stehen die Boxen mit Deckel rutschfrei über-einander.

The Gratnells property boxes have always been extremely practical. With these, every child has their own private storage space which they can take with them to the various workplaces. In cooperation with Gratnells, we have redesigned these boxes exclusively for us. They now possess a range of practical new functions.

The most striking new feature is the recess for the nameplate. The pull-out protection is now directly connected to the box and no longer simply mounted in it. Frames that have been stacked one inside the other are easy to separate thanks to the ribs on the base. The cover now fts close all the way round and can therefore bear higher loads. When stacked, the covered boxes are slip-proof.

Produktverantwortung

Verantwortung beginnt bei VS mit der Produktentwicklung und reicht über Rohstoffeinkauf, Herstellung, Einhaltung von Qualitäts- und Emissionsstandards, Auslieferung, Montage und Service bis hin zu einem Rücknahme- und Recyclingkonzept für ausgediente Möbel.

Umweltinformationen

Für jedes VS-Produkt erstellen wir Umweltinfos mit Angaben zu Material und CO₂-Emissionen. Diese werden verursacht durch den Produktionsprozess bei VS, den Transport von Zulieferteilen zu uns und den des Produkts zum Kunden sowie die Gewinnung und Verarbeitung der Materialien vor dem Produktionsprozess.

Langlebigkeit

Wir produzieren langlebige Produkte und wählen Materialien unter umweltorientierten Gesichtspunkten aus. So stellen wir sicher, dass Produkte wieder in den Materialkreislauf rückgeführt werden können. Beim Rohstoffeinsatz achten wir darauf, möglichst wenig Verschnitt und Abfall zu erzeugen.

Streng kontrolliert und sicher Unsere Produkte lassen wir regelmäßig von unabhängigen, anerkannten Instituten auf Qualität, Sicherheit und Umweltverträglichkeit prüfen.

For VS, sustainable business activity means always acting responsibly towards people, the environment and society and thus marketing outstanding products under economically sensible conditions. We manufacture all our furniture in Germany in an environmentally responsible and equitable way.

Product responsibility

For VS, responsibility starts with product development and extends through raw materials procurement, manufacturing, adherence to quality and emissions standards, delivery, assembly and service, right through to a return and recycling concept for end-of-life furniture.

Environmental information

We produce environmental information for all VS products with specifcations concerning the material and CO₂ emissions. These are caused by the production process at VS, the transportation of parts from suppliers to us and of the product to the customer, as well as by the acquisition of the materials and their processing during production.

Durability

We manufacture long-life products and consider environmental aspects when choosing our materials. In this way, we make sure that products can be reintegrated into the material cycle. When using our raw materials, we make sure that we reduce offcuts and waste to a minimum.

Our products are regularly inspected by well-known, independent institutes for quality, safety and environmental responsibility.
