NICK

FRADIANI BRINGS CHILDHOOD MEMORIES OF NEIL DIAMOND TO A BEAUTIFUL NOISE

Nick Fradiani, the singer-songwriter and Season 14 “American Idol” winner, was three or four years old when he first saw Neil Diamond live—his first concert experience.

If Fradiani was too young to remember the concert all these years later, he has many distinct memories of bonding with his musician father over a shared love of Diamond’s music. “My whole life was going out and watching my dad gig and play at different places—he would always do Neil Diamond music,” Fradiani told Tamsen Fadal on The Broadway Show. Diamond’s The Christmas Album was big at home around Christmastime too, the singer’s smooth, earthy tones and distinctive phrasing making a big impression on the young Nick. “Me and my dad would jokingly sing in the Neil voice: ‘O come, o come Emmanuel…’”

All that childhood practice has come seriously in handy. Fradiani made his Broadway debut portraying Neil Diamond—the singer-songwriter behind such evergreen hits as “Sweet Caroline,” “Cherry, Cherry,” “Red Red Wine” and “I’m a Believer”— in A Beautiful Noise on Broadway. He now leads the national touring production, bringing those Diamond hits to theatres across America.

It’s been a good excuse for Fradiani to resume his Neil Diamond studies in earnest. He spent a year and a half analyzing videos on YouTube and absorbing Diamond’s voice (speaking and singing), mannerisms and general aura. “You want to do it justice every night.”

None of that research prepared Fradiani for the experience of meeting the man himself. “It was more just kind of being in awe,” said Fradiani. “Just being in his presence was really cool.”

If A Beautiful Noise is a culminating moment for Fradiani, the same could be said for Diamond himself. Around 1989—when Fradiani saw Diamond in concert— the singer was set to work on a film project about his experiences as a young contract songwriter, based on his album Beautiful Noise. That movie project never materialized, but the new musical explores that chapter of Diamond’s life and much more besides.

“I’m glad that people are getting to see his real story,” said Fradiani. “This is the first time it’s really been told and this is how he wanted it to be told.”

A few years after his first musical—the national tour of A Bronx Tale in 2019— Fradiani feels totally at home in musical theater. “I just fell in love with it. I’ve fallen in love with the acting side of it and the camaraderie of the cast and everything. It feels like I’m back in a band, where you have the wins together, you have the losses together—you create something together.”

Plus, Nick and his father have gotten to bond over the music, just like in the old days. “I think it’s probably been the most proud I’ve ever seen my dad— when he comes and gets to see me do these songs.”

DIRECTOR MICHAEL GREIF ON TURNING ALICIA KEYS’ NEW YORK INTO HELL’S KITCHEN

STORY BY BROADWAY.COM STAFF

Michael Greif has helped shape some of the most emotionally charged and influential musicals of the past three decades. His work on Rent, Next to Normal and Dear Evan Hansen helped redefine what a Broadway musical could be, bringing raw, emotional storytelling to center stage and sparking conversations that reached beyond the theatre.

With Hell’s Kitchen, he stepped into a project rooted in personal experience and driven by the music of a global icon. The musical features music and lyrics by Grammy winner Alicia Keys, drawing inspiration from her childhood in the New York City neighborhood that gives the show its name. The book is by Pulitzer Prize finalist Kristoffer Diaz, with choreography by Tony nominee Camille A. Brown and music supervision by Emmy and Grammy winner Adam Blackstone. Greif worked closely with the creative team to shape Keys’ personal memories into a bold and emotional coming-of-age story.

Greif has always been drawn to original musicals that explore emotional truths. Hell’s Kitchen gave him the chance to build something that reflects the tension and beauty of growing up in a city that tests you, shapes you and ultimately defines you.

“I’m always looking for interesting subject matter, interestingly told,” he said in a conversation with Kathy Henderson for Broadway.com. “I was excited about how Hell’s Kitchen takes on issues of race, what it means to be a mixed kid and what it means to be a single mom trying to give her kid the best that New York City has to offer.”

Collaborating with Keys meant partnering with an artist making her first foray into musical theatre. “Alicia is a great collaborator,” he said. “She certainly has points of view, and she cares deeply about everything that happens in the musical,

but she is also generous and interested in what Kris Diaz and I have to say, what Camille Brown has to say, and what the designers are contributing. It’s a wonderful duality because she’s leading the process, but she is also a student of the process. She hasn’t made a musical before, so she brings her extraordinary skills, but also a desire to learn from the rest of us, including our incredible cast.”

Keys was born Alicia Augello Cook in Hell’s Kitchen in 1981. Her early life was filled with the contradictions of the neighborhood. She carried a homemade knife for protection but was also surrounded by the music of Thelonious Monk, Billie Holiday and Louis Armstrong. Her Italian-American mother signed her up for classical piano lessons at the age of seven. She wrote her first song not long after that.

“Good things take time and, for 13 years, I’ve been dreaming, developing and finding inspiration for a musical based on my experience growing up in Hell’s Kitchen, NYC,” Keys said. “Hell’s Kitchen is inspired by my life, but it’s not a biographical story. It’s a story about family relationships and identity: Who are we? Who do we want to be? Who are we becoming?”

She added, “The score features new songs that I’m really excited to get out into the world alongside many of my album releases that you know but you’ve never heard like this—rearranged and reinterpreted. I love and respect the art form so much and I’m excited to see it come to life.”

Greif had never directed a musical built around a pop catalog, but he was intrigued by what Keys and Diaz were setting out to do. From the beginning, the show was not meant to be a typical jukebox musical.

“Alicia and Kris never had in mind a ‘here’s-how-Alicia-became-a-recordingartist’ story,” he explained. “It’s a story about a kid trying to find herself, and that idea seemed juicy and dramatic and engaging to me.

We agreed that the first song in the musical would not be the most recognizable, and the second and third are original songs written for the show. I’m hoping audiences meet this not as a jukebox musical but as a show in which the ideas and expressions flow completely out of the situation and the characters. Later, as we move into some of the greatest hits, you get that dual moment of experiencing a song in its dramatic situation while remembering the emotional connection you already had with the song.”

Greif believes the audience plays a crucial role in shaping a musical. Their reactions sharpen the work and reveal what the story is really saying. “There’s a moment of illumination that happens when you put a show in front of an audience for the first time,” he said. “These people had to work a little to get there—our show means something to them—and so their responses reveal an incredible amount about what we’ve done right, what we still need to work on and what needs to land better. They’re the final component; we get to sit back and see it through the audience’s refreshed eyes. That’s always my favorite part.”

Looking at his own evolution as a director, Greif credits experience with helping him stay open and focused on the work. “Probably it’s a feeling of security now, of capability, that allows me to hear other perspectives, the audience’s point of view,” he said. “I’m not out there trying to prove myself, so I can just try to make the most vital and impassioned stories possible. I do feel like I’ve been part of a group of artists who have pushed the musical form, who have opened up the subject matter for what great musicals can be.”

He is proud of the result and proud of the team that brought Hell’s Kitchen to life. “It’s actually been invigorating rather than exhausting,” he said. “I’m excited to share this.”

LETTER FROM NEIL

The idea of a Broadway musical about my life has always been a daunting one. It wasn’t until the symptoms of Parkinson’s disease prematurely ended my touring career that I started to seriously consider the prospect. I say “prematurely” because my heart and soul would tour until the day I die if only my body would cooperate.

My friend and longtime producer Bob Gaudio had some success with his little show, Jersey Boys (perhaps you’ve heard of it?), so I went to him for some guidance on where to begin. Bob brought in Ken Davenport and together they built the incredible creative team that became, A Beautiful Noise.

When Anthony McCarten came on board, we spent hours talking. It was his idea to frame the show in the context of therapy sessions. I loved the idea and never shied away from talking about my years of psychoanalysis. There used to be a stigma around talking about mental health and thankfully through the years, it’s become an important and accepted topic of conversation.

Sitting in the theatre and watching the show has itself been therapeutic: reliving some joyful and some of the painful parts of my life, wishing perhaps that if I could only make a few edits in the script, it would change some of the reality of what I was seeing. But in the end, coming to terms with my life and accepting it has somehow come full circle. I feel fortunate and full of gratitude for all the people in my life. It is each of them who have impacted and shaped me in their own way to get me to the place where I am now…a better man. A better father. A better husband. A better songwriter.

I’d like to thank Marcia and Jaye, this story wouldn’t be possible without you. My children and grandchildren for your most important supporting roles in my life. My wife, Katie, who encouraged me to keep going through this process and finally, to Dr. Lu Katzman, my longtime therapist who inspired this story. May she rest in peace.
