BROADWAY IN CINCINNATI ARONOFF CENTER

Hello, Broadway Fans!

Welcome to the Cincy premiere of the delightfully silly musical Shucked. You’ve picked the perfect time to come on down to the Aronoff where the laughs are ripe, the music is fresh, and the corn is—well—shucked. Settle into your seats, butter your expectations, and get ready for a show that’s as heartfelt as it is hilarious.

At its core, Shucked is a story about community, courage, and what happens when the corn starts hitting the fan. Set in a small town that runs on that glorious yellow veggie, this show reminds us that even when life gets a little tricky, there’s always room to grow. With a toe-tapping score and a book that’s never too corny (okay, it’s actually super corny), you’re in for a real treat.

Hopefully by now you’ve heard about our newly announced 26/27 season. In this Encore edition, you’ll find an article with a bit more background on the titles we have in store—a gorgeous lineup of shows fresh from Broadway, with just the right mix of riotously unique productions (the cream of the crop, if you will) and some classic stories you didn’t realize you were craving to see again.

We’re so glad you could join us today to be part of this kernel of Broadway joy. Enjoy Shucked—and thanks for lending us your ears! (I’m done, I’m done!) We sincerely hope you’ll join us again next season as a subscriber. Trust me...these shows are worth your time, and the memories made will be irreplaceable.

Wishing you a bushel of laughs,

ROBERT HORN: THE CREATIVE FORCE BEHIND SHUCKED

Robert Horn, the Tony-winning writer of the musical Tootsie, has returned with Shucked, a musical comedy that mixes sharp humor with heartfelt messages—and a whole lot of corn. After the show’s Broadway run, it’s now making its way across the U.S. on tour. Horn sat down with Broadway.com to discuss the creative journey behind Shucked, his approach to writing comedy and the freedom of crafting an original musical.

Horn’s excitement about the Shucked is palpable. “I’m having the time of my life,” he said. “I get to write comedy, work with an amazing team and watch audiences laugh every night. That’s what keeps me going.” The humor and warmth of Shucked have connected with audiences, and the show’s national tour continues to bring that same energy to new cities.

Horn, a “New York Jewish boy,” might seem an unlikely fit for a corncentric musical set in the American heartland, but his collaboration with Nashville-based songwriters Brandy Clark and Shane McAnally turned out to be a perfect creative match. “I get to write about corn and still be true to who I am,” Horn laughed. Together, they crafted a show that blends urban wit with Southern charm.

Shucked’s roots trace back to 2011 when Horn was asked to create a musical based on the classic TV show “Hee Haw.” After working with several composers, Horn found his collaborators in Clark and McAnally, and the show, originally called Moonshine, was born. But while the musical had potential, it never quite found its footing.

“It didn’t find its heart,” Horn explained. “But that led us to something much more meaningful.” As the political climate became more divisive, Horn and his team realized they had a story to tell about a town afraid of change, which would ultimately form the backbone of Shucked The show explores how fear of the unknown can make people close themselves off, but also how opening up to others can lead to growth and understanding.

Horn’s aim was to create a show that encouraged empathy and openness. “It’s not about changing what you believe, but being open to people who are different from you,” he said.

Horn’s writing is known for its quick wit and sharp humor, and Shucked is no exception. Packed with one-liners and zingers, the musical reflects Horn’s love for comedy that is both clever and heartfelt. “I’m never satisfied, so I’m always coming up with new material,” Horn admitted. “The rehearsal process is my favorite part because it’s always evolving.”

Drawing from his background in television, Horn is accustomed to writing on the fly. “In sitcoms, if it doesn’t work, you change it right there,” he said. “I’m always testing new jokes and tweaking things.”

One of the most rewarding aspects of Shucked for Horn was the chance to write an entirely original musical. Unlike Tootsie, which was adapted from the 1982 film, Shucked began with a blank slate. “It’s terrifying, but it’s also freeing,” Horn said. “You’re not beholden to anything that came before it, so you can really say what you want to say.”

Horn’s affection for old-school, Vaudeville-style comedy is evident in Shucked. “I wanted to bring that classic American sense of humor back,” he said. “But I also wanted to make it feel fresh and relatable for today’s audience.” With Shucked’s success on Broadway and now on the national tour, it’s clear that the blend of classic comedic techniques and modern sensibility has struck a chord with theatergoers.

Despite all the playful jokes, Horn has no complaints. “I love corn. I’m grateful for corn,” he laughed. “It’s a corny show in the best possible way.”

From sweeping literary adaptations to groundbreaking new works, this lineup celebrates storytelling in all its forms, offering something extraordinary for every kind of theatergoer.

The season opens in glamorous fashion with The Great Gatsby, a dazzling musical take on F. Scott Fitzgerald’s iconic novel. Set against the glittering excess of the Jazz Age, this production brings new life to a timeless story of ambition, longing, and illusion, pairing romance and heartbreak with sumptuous design and a contemporary musical pulse.

Next comes ’Twas the Night Before… by Cirque du Soleil, a theatrical event unlike anything else in the season. Blending Cirque’s signature acrobatics with humor, heart, and holiday magic, this reimagined classic delivers jaw-dropping physical feats and a sense of wonder that delights audiences of all ages.

From spectacle, the season turns inward with Maybe Happy Ending, a tender and imaginative 2025 Tony Award-winning Best Musical that explores connection, memory, and what it means to love. With its intimate scale and emotional resonance, this acclaimed production is a reminder that some of the most powerful stories are the quietest ones.

A beloved classic returns with Disney’s Beauty and the Beast, bringing its unforgettable songs, magical romance, and timeless message back to the stage. This enchanting fresh production offers both nostalgia and renewed wonder, inviting audiences to fall in love with the story all over again.

Best Musical Tony-winner (2026) The Outsiders follows, delivering a raw and deeply moving adaptation of the novel that has shaped generations. With bold staging and an electrifying score, this musical captures the fierce loyalty, vulnerability, and hope of young people searching for belonging in a divided world.

Filled with astonishing stagecraft and emotional depth, this production proves that theater itself can feel like pure magic.

Rhythm and heritage come alive in Buena Vista Social Club, a vibrant musical inspired by the legendary musicians and the sounds of Havana. Overflowing with passion, movement, and unforgettable music, this show celebrates artistry, legacy, and the power of shared stories.

Next, Cincinnati audiences will meet an icon reborn in Boop! The Musical Bursting with color, charm, and joyful energy, this new musical brings Betty Boop to Broadway in a way that’s playful, heartfelt, and irresistibly fun.

A timeless favorite returns with The Sound of Music, a story that continues to resonate with generations. Featuring one of the most beloved scores in musical theater history, this production celebrates family, resilience, and the enduring power of music.

Modern royalty takes the stage when SIX returns to the Aronoff Center. This global phenomenon reimagines the wives of Henry VIII as pop superstars. Bold, empowering, and endlessly entertaining, this concertstyle musical turns history on its head.

The season concludes with the haunting beauty of Hadestown, a spellbinding journey to the underworld and back. With its folk-infused score and poetic storytelling, this modern classic leaves audiences with a powerful reminder of hope, love, and the courage to keep going—even when the road is dark.

Together, these productions form a season that is as rich and varied as Broadway itself—an invitation to experience the thrill, heart, and magic of live theater all year long. All shows are presented at the Aronoff Center and subscription packages are on sale now.
