Kansas City Music Hall, Beauty and the Beast, October 2025
KANSAS CITY MUSIC HALL
KANSAS CITY, MISSOURI
Welcome to Music Hall!
We’re thrilled to have you with us for this spectacular 30th Anniversary production of Disney’s Beauty and the Beast. Many members of the original creative team have reunited to craft a show that’s sure to enchant audiences of all ages. The musical first opened on Broadway in 1994 and ran for thirteen years, making it the sixth longest-running show at that time. Today it remains the tenth-longest running production in Broadway history and if you haven’t seen it before, you’re about to discover why.
Next up, we’re excited to present & Juliet, a bold and hilarious new musical from Emmy-winning writer David West Read (“Schitt’s Creek”) and Grammy Award winner, Max Martin. Martin has written, or co-written, twenty-seven Billboard Hot 100 number-one hits, many of which you’ll hear in the show. This fresh take on Shakespeare’s classic flips the script on the greatest love story ever told. You’ll be swept away on a fabulous journey as Juliet tosses her famous ending for a new beginning.
Thank you to the incredible teams at Music Hall and the American Theatre Guild, and to our partners at PNC Bank. And most of all, thank you for being here. We can’t wait to welcome you back again soon!
With gratitude,
Leslie K. Broecker and the PNC Broadway in KC team
GOING HOME AGAIN: LINDA WOOLVERTON AND MATT WEST ON THE NEW BEAUTY AND THE BEAST TOUR
STORY BY Beth Stephens
What does it feel like to return to the world of Beauty and the Beast?
For book writer Linda Woolverton and director and choreographer Matt West, who created the original choreography for the Broadway production, it feels deeply personal.
“Going home,” West said.
“I was going to say the same thing,” added Woolverton. “It feels like going home. We’re family. We’ve been with this show for so long and it’s been a joy every time. And so to come back and reimagine it and rethink it to the degree we’re doing it is such a joy.”
More than 30 years after the animated film premiered and nearly 25 since the last Disney-produced national tour, Beauty and the Beast is hitting the road again in a bold new production. The show helped shape a generation of theatergoers, many of whom are now performing in this reimagined version.
“It feels a little surreal,” West said. “I have to pinch myself every once in a while to really think about where we all started, starting from the movie, actually creating the movie, to where we are today. It’s kind of mind-boggling.”
Both creatives approached the production with a willingness to examine every part of the production. “I wanted to look at every

aspect of it,” West said. “The lighting, the design, the costume design, the scenic design and the dances. We wrote some new scenes for this production. Textures have changed. The lighting is new at your fingertips, so we’ve done it all.”
That includes big changes in choreography. “All the dances are new,” West said. “‘Be Our Guest’ is now a big tap number, which I’ve always wanted to do, so I’ve put it in. David Chase did the new dance arrangements and the tavern number is bigger. They’re all bigger. It’s bigger and brighter and bolder and better than ever.”
Woolverton, who also wrote the screenplay for the animated film, found herself returning to familiar material. “We really worked hard on making the show not feel like it was stuck in the past,” she said. “Over the 30 years we’ve been evolving. Constantly moving and changing. I’ve rewritten so many scenes so many times. Things have come in and gone out, come back in again. I was writing a new scene four weeks ago and I couldn’t believe it. It was like I’m writing the scene again.”
“And it works,” West said.
“It works,” Woolverton replied. “And it’s because they were my friends. So it was like playing with my old friends.”
At the heart of the story is Belle. “You know, Howard Ashman and I really wanted to conjure up a new kind of Disney heroine that wasn’t a princess but was a heroine who took action in the world and was a thinker and a reader,” Woolverton said. “That was really foremost on my mind when I was writing this character for the first time.”
That spirit continues to shape the way Woolverton views the show in 2025. “The story is a contemporary story,” she said. “The heroine is a contemporary girl, so it lends itself to being updated as we go along and learn new things and grow ourselves and put that into the show.”
For many of the cast members, this production represents a full-circle moment. “Many in our cast have shown me pictures of them at the Palace Theatre on Broadway when they were five and six,” said West. “And now here they are doing it with us. It’s surreal. It’s a joy and it’s the gift that keeps on giving.”
The show’s central message continues to resonate. “You know this show points out that love is love is love is love, right?” West said. “Love is love. And these two unlikely people come together and forgive and understand and grow together and end up together. It’s a good story to tell people and it’s a good process to look at.”
Woolverton added, “Really important for me is that you can come back from a mistake. He made a terrible mistake when he was young and suffered a lot, and everyone in the castle suffers for it. But you can come back through love. It’s the redemptive power of love that I think really touches people about this story.”
And of course, the music remains a centerpiece. “I think everybody relates to these characters in some way,” West said. “And the songs by Alan Menken with lyrics by Howard Ashman and Tim Rice. The songs are well known. You hum along with them. You walk out feeling good. And I think it’s a family show. It’s a date night show. It’s for everyone and I’m very proud of that.”
When asked who they hope will see this new production, their answer was simple.
“People from four to 104,” said West.
“Everyone can be your guest,” Woolverton added.
FOR & JULIET PRODUCER EVA PRICE, ‘JUKEBOX MUSICAL’ IS NOT A DIRTY WORD
The Tony Award winner wants to erase the stigma of what a musical with preexisting songs can be.
STORY BY Ruthie Fierberg
Broadway’s new jukebox musical & Juliet first opened in England at the Manchester Opera House in September 2019. After a move to the West End, British producers eyed a Main Stem transfer, and they thought of just the American producer to partner with them. When they asked Eva Price, a Tony Award winner for the gritty 2019 Oklahoma! revival, the producer recalled: “How quickly could ‘yes’ come out of my mouth?”
Price isn’t afraid to admit (or the word she’d more likely use: declare) that she loves a jukebox musical. “When they’re good,” she clarified.
“I love a jukebox musical and I love an intelligentsia, high culture, elite, smart play or musical,” Price said. “I actually felt, for the first time, I was seeing something [in & Juliet] that meshed both.” And she argues that jukebox musicals actually shouldn’t be one or the other.
Over the past 20 seasons, Broadway has reliably presented at least one jukebox musical each season (with the sole exception of 2007-2008). Still, only two jukebox musicals in that two-decade span won the Tony Award for Best Musical (Jersey Boys and Moulin Rouge!) and only five have ever played more than 1,000 Broadway performances (although Mamma Mia! is the ninth-longest-running Broadway show of all time).

Whether it’s the lack of critical or financial success (or another factor entirely), “jukebox musical” is a label many shy away from for fear of its negative connotation.
Part of that emanates from a stigma of using preexisting material, as the perception can be that this makes for an easier creative process. “I actually think, in some ways, writing the book for a jukebox musical — when it’s good — is harder,” Price said.
“Let’s just say Mamma Mia! and & Juliet, specifically,” Price said. “They’re wholly original stories that are connecting the songs, and I think & Juliet does it best in which the songs feel like they’re written for that book.”
(Price recounted the proud story of her parents seeing the musical for the first time and telling her, “I can’t believe he wrote all these songs for this musical!”)
Of course, music mega-producer and songwriter Max Martin didn’t write the 29 songs that are in & Juliet specifically for the show, but Tony-nominated book writer David West Read worked hard to make it seem like that was the case. That cleverness, in Price’s mind, is what renders a jukebox musical “good.”
But Price also views the genre as an opportunity for Broadway, especially in this time of rebuilding after the pandemic shutdown. “More shows that bring in new audiences are actually important for the Street and for the industry,” Price said. Like the popular music at the center of the show, & Juliet is for the masses. As Price said, “Our target audience, I think, is anyone with a heartbeat.”
So far, Price’s instincts about adding this specific jukebox musical to her producing roster and bringing it to Broadway have answered a need in this moment. As she said, “What I think we also need as culture-seekers and audiences is joy.”
“What is one of those things that reminds us of good? Nostalgia. What’s nostalgic? Music,” Price continued.
“We were a show that I think people had low expectations about coming into Broadway,” Price confided. Yet & Juliet went on to earn nine Tony nominations. “It’s telling the world that musicals and plays of all shapes and sizes of all genres are here,” Price said, including jukebox musicals. “They’re selling tickets, they’re getting nominations, they’re impacting the conversation.”

Ashman’s first love was theatre. He was a founder of Off Off-Broadway’s renowned WPA Theatre, where he conceived, wrote and directed the classic musical Little Shop of Horrors as well as God Bless You, Mr. Rosewater (both music by Alan Menken). A new cast recording of Rosewater is available from Sh-K-Boom records. In 1986, Ashman wrote and directed the Broadway musical Smile (music by Marvin Hamlisch). Lamented as a lost treasure of the 1980’s theatre scene, Smile remains popular on high school and college campuses. A documentary about Ashman’s life titled HOWARD has received great acclaim for its sensitive portrayal of the man and the artist. Howard Ashman died in 1991 from complications of AIDS. Worldwide, its ten Broadway titles have been seen by more than 200 million theatregoers and have been nominated for 62 Tony Awards®, winning Broadway’s highest honor 20 times. The company’s inaugural production, Beauty and the Beast, opened in 1994, playing a remarkable 13-year run on Broadway and continues to be produced in replica productions around the world. In November 1997 Disney made theatrical history with the opening of The Lion King, which received six 1998 Tony Awards including Best Musical and Best Director, Julie Taymor, who became the first woman in Broadway history to win the award. Approaching 30 landmark years on Broadway, it has welcomed over 124 million visitors worldwide to date and has multiple productions currently running worldwide. Within Disney Theatrical Group’s first three decades, under the leadership of Thomas Schumacher, The Lion King has played over 100 cities in 24 countries on every continent except Antarctica and its worldwide gross exceeds that of any film, Broadway show or entertainment title in box office history. Elton John and Tim Rice’s Aida opened on Broadway next, winning four 2000 Tony Awards. It was followed by Mary Poppins, a co-production with Cameron Mackintosh, which opened in London in 2004 and went on to enjoy a six-year Tony-winning Broadway run. TARZAN®, Tony-nominated for its 2006 Broadway premiere, went on to become an international hit with an award-winning production enjoying a ten-year run in Germany. In January 2008, The Little Mermaid opened on Broadway and was the best-selling new musical of that year. Disney Theatrical Group opened two critically acclaimed productions on Broadway in 2012, winning seven Tony Awards between them: Peter and the Starcatcher and Newsies, each of which enjoyed a two-year run and launched North American tours, with Newsies playing a record-breaking Fathom Events in-cinema release. Disney Theatrical Group’s 2014 hit, Aladdin, continues its smash Broadway run, having launched eleven productions on four continents and been seen by more than 21 million guests. Disney Theatrical Group’s newest hit, the 2018 Tony-nominated Best Musical Frozen has launched eight productions around the world and a filmed version of the stage musical currently available on Disney+. Other stage ventures include King David in concert on Broadway, Der Glöckner Von Notre Dame in Berlin, stage productions of Disney’s High School
Musical and the Olivier-nominated West End hit Shakespeare in Love. Disney Theatrical Group has collaborated with preeminent theatres in the US to develop new stage musicals including The Hunchback of Notre Dame and Freaky Friday. As a part of the recent acquisition of 20th Century Studios, Disney Theatrical Group also heads the Buena Vista Theatrical banner, which licenses Fox titles for stage adaptations including Anastasia, Moulin Rouge! The Musical and Mrs. Doubtfire. Disney Theatrical recently premiered Hercules in London’s West End and a North American tour production of Beauty and the Beast.
