Classics endure not because each generation experiences them the same way, but because they continue to be reimagined. Duel Reality does just that— transforming Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet into a thrilling, contemporary circus experience that speaks powerfully to audiences today. By blending breathtaking acrobatics, raw physicality, and theatrical storytelling, The 7 Fingers invite us to experience this story not only with our minds but with our bodies and hearts. The emotions are immediate, the stakes are visceral, and the storytelling transcends language.
Duel Reality is presented as part of our Classic Remix project. After hearing from educators and district leaders about their struggle to engage high school students in classic literature, the Alliance began working with leading playwrights to create or find new works that revitalize, rethink, and respond to classic literary works found in most school curriculums. Written with an immediacy that unleashes the questions and perspectives found in these classic stories, the Classic Remix plays that are chosen or commissioned invite all audiences to engage with the material in ways that feel relevant to their contemporary world view. When the text leaps, falls, balances, and soars before their eyes, it becomes alive in an entirely new way.
At the same time, Duel Reality reminds us that innovation and tradition are not opposites—they are partners. Audiences of all ages will recognize the familiar heartbeat of this classic story while being surprised and delighted by its bold, athletic reimagining. It is theater that invites curiosity, sparks conversation, and welcomes newcomers as warmly as lifelong theater lovers.
We are especially proud to welcome back the extraordinary artists of The 7 Fingers, whose work we previously shared with Atlanta audiences through our collaboration on the world premiere musical, Water for Elephants. Their ability to blend circus artistry with emotional storytelling continues to inspire us.

“Over the years, [Gypsy and I] have talked about wanting to do adaptations of various works in a circus style.”
As they devised shows, they always thought in terms of writing unique pieces of circus, using their theater and dance vocabulary. In the process, they always wondered, “what would happen if we did Romeo and Juliet.”
Eventually, as they were approached by Virgin Voyages to create a show for their new fleet of ships, they decided to make their dream real. In the summer of 2021, they debuted Duel Reality on Virgin’s Scarlet Lady.
“They had a theater that was modular in an alley configuration - like a tennis court. It just reminded me of a sports arena in a way, like a stadium,” she remembers. “Right away, like this Venn diagram when everything goes ‘ding-ding-ding’ together, everything kind of converged.”
In that moment, like in the movies or a cartoon when the light bulb lights up over a person’s head, they knew they had to do Romeo and Juliet like a sporting event, merging theater and circus together.
This is not the first time the Alliance Theatre has worked with Carroll. The Alliance’s 2023 production Water for Elephants, based on a novel about a traveling circus, required unique choreography. Carroll was part of the creative team for the show and designed the circus elements.
Coming back to Atlanta for Duel Reality is sentimental for Carroll in many ways.
“[Being in Atlanta for Water for Elephants] was like we were in camp together. You know when you have great memories of your summer camp friends? We had such a great time,” she said. “There are such fond memories from those months. It’s like going back to some beloved place.”
To be clear, Duel Reality isn’t Water for Elephants. There are some vast

differences, but the same awe that audiences experienced from that show will be just as awe-inspiring, if not more, in Duel Reality.
“Romeo and Juliet is a classic. Simply put!” said Carroll. “I hope that audiences who experience Duel Reality will be viscerally and emotionally transported. Circus language, at least in the way I try to use it, is always metaphorically linked to the story beat. With Duel Reality, like in Romeo and Juliet, there is a sense that the stakes are high stakes. Whether it’s the high stakes of the battle, or the high stakes of the love, in every scene there is essentialized emotion, and the circus aspect is viscerally accompanying that story beat.”
The show, she said, is designed to transport audiences.
“Often, whenever we go to the theater, if you’re anything like me, you sit back and wonder, ‘Where is this going? What is this about? What do I think of this?’”
But when it comes to circus, she believes audiences don’t allow themselves to be transported in the same way. Not usually. Duel Reality, however, is designed to transport. Or, at least, she would love for audiences to be transported.
“When circus is seen and framed in the right way, it has that capacity to be transformative; to be life-affirming, because it shows you something that you thought was, maybe, impossible previously, as possible,” she said. “That carries over to other corners of your life, and people realize everything they thought was impossible could be possible.”
Alliance Theatre Sets Wonder Free.
And what delights during performances ignites a brighter future. You can invest in better tomorrows by supporting access for youth to experience world-class theatre on a stage that’s all their own. Now is the time.
Introducing The
Goizueta
Stage For Youth And Families,
a transformative new space designed to inspire young audiences year-round. Research shows that early access to live theater can significantly combat critical issues like low literacy rates and the urgent youth mental health crisis. To fulfill this promise, the Alliance Theatre is launching a $10 million Imagine Endowment to expand our capacity to serve more young people and sustain these enriching experiences in perpetuity. With this endowment, the Goizueta Stage will be a beacon of accessibility, welcoming children from all backgrounds and removing economic, geographic, and physical barriers to ensure that every child can engage with the magic of theatre for generations to come.

CIRQUE PERFORMERS PUSH THE LIMITS OF HUMANITY
WRITTEN BY Morgan Schatmeyer, EASL Literary Intern
Life as a trapeze artist is about more than just the intense training, nomadic lifestyle, or death-defying stunts; it’s about the spontaneity of creating something new every time a performer takes to the stage. The discipline is demanding, but it fuels the passion to keep telling stories through movement. It’s what keeps the fire alive.
Cirque tour life mirrors that of any traditional touring show: demanding hours, time away from home, and exposure to different cultures and cities. This, of course, is supplemented by the rehearsal element, which emphasizes collaboration and artistic blending to achieve the best possible performance. Additionally, performers must maintain a peak physical condition to consistently execute their stunts at a high level. The job demands a constant state of physical readiness, with the ability to adapt to new disciplines at a moment’s notice.
Often, performers are introduced to movement styles that fall outside their comfort zones, each requiring a unique skill set. Silvia Dopazo, an aerialist from Spain, is currently touring as an aerial artist. The experience has expanded her artistic repertoire, exposing her to a wide range of disciplines beyond her original training, and preparing her for any future artistic endeavors. “I was a rope and tissue artist, and now I’m skating, I am doing chains, bungees… all disciplines I had never done before,” she shares.
Sophie Brandeborn, a performer with AXEL, a touring figure-skating cirque show, describes performing as a truly magical experience; one that overtakes her completely.
“For me… I can almost have an outside-of-body experience, where I see everything from a perspective outside of myself…as you get more comfortable, that’s when the beauty kicks in…when you start getting a connection with the audience. You get secure in your role.”
Silvia Dopazo

Since taking over this position, Chris has expanded the reach and impact by making the Alliance Theatre Education department a vital resource for advancing the civic agenda of Atlanta. This work is accomplished through deep and sustained partnerships with social service organizations throughout the city. Under his leadership, the Alliance launched its Kathy & Ken Bernhardt Theatre for the Very Young program, which provides fully interactive professional theater experiences for children of all abilities from ages newborn through five years old;

During his time at the Alley, Brandon focused on improving operational systems to enhance the workplace environment for all of those involved. Brandon was instrumental in
multiple transfer productions from Born with Teeth that will play in the West End this fall, Cambodian Rock Band which was a multi-city co-production, and the recently announced Off-Broadway transfers of Thornton Wilder’s The Emporium and Torera. Brandon came to the GM role from Williamstown Theatre Festival in Massachusetts, where he served over six seasons as Producing Manager, Associate Line Producer, and Resident Production Stage Manager. During his time at Williamstown, three productions moved to major New York City not-forprofits, including Martyna Majok’s Pulitzer Prize-winning play Cost of Living, and five productions transitioned to Broadway. DUEL REALITY
AN EPIC, CIRQUE-INFUSED PERFORMANCE INSPIRED BY SHAKESPEARE’S ROMEO AND JULIET
From The 7 Fingers, the high-flying troupe behind the awe-inspiring stunts in the Alliance’s Broadway musical Water for Elephants, comes Duel Reality—an epic, cirque-infused performance inspired by Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet. Featuring their signature electrifying mix of circus, storytelling, music, and dance, this acrobatic tour-de-force for all ages has been described as “entirely entertaining and engaging” and “a spectacle that will truly astonish all who see it.” Imagine a world where star-crossed lovers are circus stars, their love story unfolding through graceful and death-defying acrobatics. Two feuding families engage in a battle of skill, each competition more daring than the last—while a pair of starcrossed lovers struggles to escape the showdown. They are fierce players, but do they care who wins or loses if playing the game can bring them closer together? The reimagined tale of two rival houses dazzles the senses and stirs the heart.
ABOUT THE 7 FINGERS
The 7 Fingers (Les 7 Doigts) is a collective unlike any other. Founded in 2002 by seven former Cirque du Soleil performers, the renowned Montreal-based company redefines circus by stripping down the spectacle to its thrilling essence. The contemporary company tells stories using death-defying acrobatics with a life-affirming theatricality that is unique to The 7 Fingers. Since its inception, the company has expanded from its own signature touring shows to creating theatrical experiences as diverse as the very artistic directors themselves: original productions varying from intimate one-man shows to large-scale arena performances, Broadway musicals, artistic collaborations with renowned international artists and companies, production design and direction, special events, Olympic ceremonies, televised performances, fashion, art and music events, immersive experiences and much more. The 7 Fingers create performances that celebrate our world, our time and our humanity. Every one of these projects carries The 7 Fingers’ unequivocal mark.
While Duel Reality is touring in the United States and presented aboard Virgin Voyages’ cruise ships, The 7 Fingers continue to develop and present multiple projects around the world. Since 2021, the company has been presenting an intimate and immersive resident production at its San Francisco theater, Club Fugazi: Dear San Francisco, a love letter to the wondrous city by the bay. https://7fingers.com/
Before we learn how to speak, we know how to move. The body flinches, reaches, and recoils long before language arrives. In Dual Reality, movement returns us to that original form of communication, where truth lives in posture, breath, and instinct. The body carries memory, tension, and vulnerability in ways words cannot always access. This work listens closely to what the body has been holding.
Body language is a language of its own; one we use every day, often unconsciously. Duel Reality amplifies that unspoken vocabulary through rhythm and tempo, which shapes how their story unfolds. In theatre, dance allows connection without explanation. We recognize ourselves in a trembling hand, a collapsing torso, a body suspended between falling and flying. As a storyteller, expressing myself through dance is where I feel the freest. Movement is how I process emotion and make sense of the world. When words fail, the body speaks, offering freedom to be vulnerable without apology. In Duel Reality, that same freedom is extended to the audience, inviting them to feel rather than be told.
The 7 Fingers heightens the emotional stakes with physical tricks, balances, suspensions, and moments of near-fall. The art of amusement lives beside vulnerability, creating tension that feels alive and unpredictable. These elements echo the relationship between theatre and acrobatics as storytelling forms. A held balance mirrors instability. A fall suggests rupture and recovery. Internal conflict becomes physically visible. What is often overlooked in acrobatics as a storytelling device is the intellectual rigor behind it. Every physical choice carries meaning, stillness, spacing, repetition, and proximity that all shape the narrative. Movement resists simplification. It asks audiences to slow down, to sit with ambiguity, and participate in meaning-making.
Art is subjective, and in that subjectivity lies freedom. Duel Reality embraces this openness, allowing each viewer to connect, interpret, and imagine. Storytelling through the body becomes freedom itself, held in emotion, and remembered long after the stage is empty.
