The library of the University of Coimbra is the oldest library in Portugal (1500). In Mafra there is another old library (1700). What do these two Portuguese libraries both have? Very special employees! The true guardians of the ancient, rare and precious volumes of these two libraries are… bats! During the day no one can see them. When the evening comes and there is no one, the bats come out and start flying among the books. They do a very important job: they eat insects that are harmful to the paper of the books–silverfish, woodworms... Every evening the librarians cover chairs and tables with sheets to prevent them from becoming dirty by their little flying colleagues. Their service is free and the library workers don’t have to use dangerous insecticides!
