CONTACT

GENERAL MANAGER

As we close out the year, I want to take a moment to express my sincere gratitude to Outgoing President Mark Holmstedt for his outstanding leadership and dedication to the Club. Under his guidance, we’ve navigated a challenging year and set a strong foundation for the future. I’m also thrilled to welcome Incoming President Dana Pingatore, our first female president in the history of the Club—a milestone worth celebrating! The Board will meet in mid-December for its annual planning session and goal-setting for the upcoming year, and I’m excited about the opportunities ahead.

It’s hard to believe five months have already passed since I joined this incredible Club and Community! Time has flown by, thanks to the wealth of experiences and learning opportunities I’ve had here. Since my last update, we’ve hosted numerous events and activities, completed the budget process, and held our Annual Meeting—where the budget and dues adjustments were approved.

If you missed the meeting, the video and recording are available on our website. I’m confident in the Club’s direction—both socially and financially—thanks to the dedication of our Member Volunteers on the Finance Committee and Long-Range Strategic Planning Committee, as well as the support of the Board. I also want to recognize our Director of Finance, Rachelle Parsons, and the entire Management Team for their hard work during what has been a challenging year for everyone. The good news? There’s light at the end of the tunnel—and it’s not a train!

Another highlight is our Membership Sales and Marketing success. When I started in July, there were 22 Proprietary Golf Memberships on the sale list. Today, thanks to the efforts of the Membership Committee and our Membership Director, Nikki Ericksen, that number may be down to just two as we enter the New Year! Golf sales and inquiries have remained strong—even during what is typically a slower season. Our marketing efforts, combined with your referrals, have truly energized this momentum. When you have a great product and confidence in it, it’s

easier to share. Please continue to refer friends and family and help us keep this success going!

On the operations side, I want to address recent staffing changes in Food & Beverage Management. This area has been the most challenging for me to fully grasp, but please trust that these changes are necessary for the Club to thrive. Chef Andy and his culinary team continue to deliver creative and traditional menu options, but our service team needs additional support to provide the complete experience we’re striving for. Beginning December 1, we’ll have a temporary industry consultant leading the service team while we search for a new Service Manager. This consultant will also train and evaluate the team to set them up for success—and will return a month or two after the new manager is in place to ensure progress. Your feedback during this process—both positive and constructive—is invaluable.

On a personal note, I played my first round of golf here on November 22 and was impressed with the course conditions. After shoulder replacement surgery in May, this was my maiden voyage—and I’m happy to report the surgery was a success! Recent improvements include leveling tee boxes and replacing bunker faces, which will continue through the winter as weather allows. Additionally, the Driving Range Tee renovation is scheduled to begin the first week of January (weather permitting). This project will regrade and level all teeing surfaces and relocate the artificial hitting areas for a better overall experience. Thank you to James, Adam, and the team for their outstanding work!

As we enter December, the holiday season is in full swing. While the Tree Lighting will have taken place by the time you read this, there are still plenty of festive events ahead—including the Family Christmas Celebration on December 13. I hope you enjoy the holidays with family and friends, and I look forward to seeing you around the Club.

Happy Holidays to all!

FROM THE EXECUTIVE CHEF

As we turn the corner into the holiday season, the entire culinary team would like to share our heartfelt appreciation. November was a joy, filled with energy and excitement throughout the Club. From the bustle of the Fall Wine Sale to the spirited fun of the Halloween Party, it was a pleasure seeing so many of you gather with friends and family. Your presence brings life to the Red Horse and the Clubhouse, and we are truly grateful.

December is one of our favorite times of year, and the kitchen is already glowing with festive inspiration. To welcome the season, we’ve refreshed both the Lunch and Dinner menus to highlight comforting favorites and celebratory flavors. At lunch, classics like Shrimp Louie and Chinese Chicken Salad return—bright, fresh, and perfect for the season. Dinner offers heartier fare for winter evenings, including our Bone-In Short Rib and the impressive Pork Tomahawk, two dishes that bring warmth and richness to your holiday dining. And to elevate those special moments, we’ve added Caviar to the menu—an elegant indulgence befitting the most festive time of year.

In the spirit of the season, our daily specials will be filled with the aromas of warm spices and vibrant citrus. The team has been crafting dishes that celebrate winter ingredients, such as Citrus and Fennel Roast Chicken with Calabrian chiles and a deeply fragrant Beef Birria infused with cinnamon and allspice. These flavors capture

the comfort, brightness, and joy that December brings to our kitchen.

Our pastry chef, Katia, is embracing the season with equal enthusiasm. Her holiday creations highlight the nostalgic flavors we all crave this time of year—gingerbread rich with spice, a silky bread pudding accented with nutmeg and persimmon, and a spiced apple upsidedown cake that fills the kitchen with the scent of winter. For our large family celebrations, she has prepared an assortment of festive holiday cookies, perfected through cheerful sampling sessions all month long.

As we celebrate this special season, we want to extend our warmest wishes to you and your families. Thank you for dining with us at the Red Horse and throughout the Club. We look forward to sharing more memorable meals, joyful gatherings, and holiday cheer with you in the weeks ahead.

From our kitchen to your table—may your season be warm, bright, and delicious.

FROM THE HEAD GOLF PROFESSIONAL

Winter is here! How do we play good golf in the cold, wet, and miserable weather? Very carefully! Winter golf takes patience and the right gear, but there is still the ability to play great golf here at Diablo Country Club. The first part of playing well in the winter is dressing appropriately, otherwise known as dressing warm! With golf being a rotational movement, it is important to make sure that our core stays warm. Base layering pieces and vests are a necessity for the winter, along with over pieces that continue to allow flexibility. Of course we need to keep our hands warm, as they are the only connection to the club. Hand warmers and cart mitts work wonders, as does a little trick that works well here at Diablo. Every time you pass the snack shack, stop in the restroom and put your hands under warm water. Keep them warm and keep them connected to the club.

Now that we are warm and ready, hitting the correct golf shots during the wet and mushy season is imperative. The tendency is to push the ball back in the stance to make sure we do not hit it heavy, but this is wrong! Please make sure that ball position stays consistent and pushed a bit up past center, this way the bottom of the club goes through the grass and not digging into the turf. Another great shot to have during the mushy winter days is the fairway wood, used close to the

green. Grip it and the bottom of the grip, using a putting grip, put the toe of the fairway wood down and the heel up, and swing it like a putter. This will get the ball skipping across the wet turf and there is no way to chunk it! A fun little stroke saver!

Another fun equipment experiment is with golf balls. Now is the time to experiment with different types of balls to see which is best for you. Is it feel from the putter and chipping? Is it maximum distance off the tee? Is it all these plus more? With so many golf balls in play on the PGA tour, you can’t go wrong. Visit the Golf Shop and let us help you decide.

We look forward to being able to take care of any Christmas shopping that needs to be done, any wrapping of presents, or finding that special gift for your golfer. Come see us for the Holidays!

Remember, golf is hard, so go have fun!

FROM THE AGRONOMY TEAM UPDATE

GOLF COURSE MAINTENANCE

Here is the latest update on our ongoing course projects and upcoming plans. Thank you for your continued support as we work to improve playing conditions throughout the course.

Bunker Renovation Progress

Our bunker face renovation efforts continue to move forward steadily:

∙ Hole #8 Sand installation is complete, and the bunker is open for play.

∙ Hole #15 Sand will be installed, and the bunker will be ready for play this weekend.

∙ Hole #14 Work is ongoing. Only one bunker remains to be stripped and re-sodded. The others have been re-sodded and will receive sand once the sod has adequately rooted.

After completing #14, we will move on to Hole #10, which will require significant work. Given the likelihood of weather interruptions, we anticipate this project taking approximately two weeks.

Overseeding Updates

∙ All overseeded par-three tee boxes are open for play this weekend.

∙ Remaining tees on #3 and #13 will be overseeded next week on 11/17.

∙ Tees on #8 and #16 do not require additional seeding and will remain open moving forward.

Todd Eckenrode and Origins Golf Design Partnership

We are pleased to share that the club has entered into a new annual agreement with Todd Eckenrode and Origins Golf Design. This partnership provides year-round access to their expertise for any course design discussions or potential adjustments. The agreement includes:

∙ An annual course report to support operational planning

∙ Guidance for future capital improvement projects

This collaboration will strengthen our long-term planning efforts and help preserve the integrity and vision of the golf course.

#18 Tree Assessment

Recently, Vasquez Tree Service and their arborist performed exploratory excavation around several trees on Hole #18. Findings indicate that the existing trees are nearing the end of their natural lifespan. While we can take certain steps to extend their viability, it is clear that long-term planning is necessary.

We recommend that next year’s committee establish a strategic plan for these trees. Our new partnership with Todd Eckenrode will be instrumental in guiding the Club through this transition thoughtfully and effectively.

Winter Tee Time & Frost Delay Adjustments

Beginning December 1 through the end of February, we will be testing changes to the tee sheet and how we manage frost delays:

∙ The first available tee time will be 8:00am.

∙ In the event of a frost delay, tee times will simply be pushed back for the entire day.

▷ Example: If you have an 11:00am time and there is a 1.5-hour delay, your new tee time becomes 12:30pm.

The Agronomy and Golf Staff will work together to communicate these changes clearly and limit any confusion. These adjustments will allow the Agronomy Team adequate time to prepare the course properly and will simplify the handling of frost delays.

Fall/Winter Maintenance Operation Changes

We will begin reducing mowing frequencies on fairways, tees, and rough as bermudagrass growth slows.

A light pigment application will be used on fairways during transitional periods in spring and fall to help reduce the time bermudagrass remains fully dormant.

∙ The first application—using different products and rates—was completed on 11/3.

∙ Additional applications will continue every 2–3 weeks until the turf enters full dormancy.

We ask that members and guests avoid driving too close to bunker edges and tree wells, especially during periods of reduced bermudagrass growth.

∙ Staking off areas typically shifts traffic farther into fairways, creating new issues.

Upcoming Practice Tee Renovations

Work on the practice tees will begin December 1st or December 8th, depending on contractor availability.

The project will include:

∙ Complete removal of existing turf, artificial turf, and concrete

∙ Leveling of all tee surfaces

∙ Installation of new overseeded bermuda grass sod

∙ Construction of new concrete pads for artificial tee lines at the back of each tee

∙ Installation of TurfHound artificial turf tee lines on the concrete pads

▷ (Thank you to Erik and Sara for taking the time to select the appropriate artificial turf product.)

∙ Replacement of the mat line at the hitting net using the same product as the practice facility

∙ Removal of concrete steps at teaching tee, with replacement DG path up to tee

The renovation is expected to take about two weeks, with the practice tees remaining closed for approximately 4–5 weeks in total.

Annual Halloween Golf Tournament

In late October, the DWGG and the Niners joined forces for the much-anticipated Halloween Golf Tournament. This year’s theme, “The Golfing Dead,” brought a spooky twist to the event, with volunteers transforming the ladies’ locker room and the course into a festive haunt.

Members enjoyed a scramble format featuring Halloween-inspired challenges—such as putting with bones on Hole 9—alongside skill-based competitions. As always, the collaboration between the two groups created a lively and memorable day on the course.

Davis Cup Tennis Social

On October 8, we hosted our Davis Cup Tennis Social—Spain vs. Italy. The competition was fierce, the energy electric, and it all came down to the very last match. Team Spain clinched the win, but honestly, everyone walked away a winner after celebrating at the Court House with great food and even better company.

Monsters & Margaritas Pickleball Mixer

Our Monsters & Margaritas event on October 22 was a blast! The Court House was decked out for Halloween, players showed up in full costume, and the margaritas (of course) did not disappoint. It was also our first event using the new food-ordering app, and it worked like a charm, food delivered straight to the courts!

FALL BOCCE SEASON RECAP – CHAMPIONS CROWNED

What an incredible season of bocce at Diablo Country Club! With 34 teams and 488 players competing across three leagues, this fall was packed with thrilling matches, unforgettable comebacks, and plenty of camaraderie. Here’s how it all unfolded:
