Toys for all the girls and boys Santa patrols neighborhoods bringing gifts to children in need By Lisa Collacott All children look forward to opening those Christmas presents tucked under the tree Christmas morning, but sadly some children won’t have anything to open because of the financial hardships that their families face. Because of the generosity of the TriLakes community, Santa and his elves will make their way through Monument and Palmer Lake to deliver toys to those in need when Santa on Patrol makes a stop in their neighborhoods on Dec. 21. Santa, otherwise known as Monument Police Chief Jake Shirk, and members of the Monument and Palmer Lake Police departments, the Tri-Lakes Monument Fire Protection District and the Palmer Lake Volunteer Fire Department will visit children with police cars and fire engines and sirens blaring instead of a sleigh and eight reindeer. “Our goal would be to make sure every needy child in the Tri-Lakes area gets a toy,” Shirk said. Santa on Patrol is in its eighth year in the Tri-Lakes area. It was originally started by Shirk in 1993 when he was with the Toys continues on Page 4

Small Town Christmas kicked off Nov. 30 with the theme “Small Business Saturday.” Dec. 7 is the traditional “Small Town Christmas,” while Dec. 14 is labeled “Holiday Open House.” The big event on Dec. 7 is the Christmas tree lighting in Limbach Park.
