2.3 Explore narrative voices

Differentiated

nothing so cold as the February night I opened the door in the Chapel of Rest where my mother lay, neither young, nor old, where my lips, returning the kiss to her brow, knew the meaning of cold.

What is the’plot’ or ‘content’ of this poem? What is the sequence of events?

between narrative voices and perspectives, and try out some of them in their own writing.

• Some students could comment on the effects of a range of narrative voices and perspectives, and apply this to convey a particular and convincing tone in their own writing.

Getting you thinking

Big question Refer to the Big question: How do writers create interesting narrative voices? Ask the students to think of a main character in a novel or short story they have read and enjoyed. What made that character distinctive? Was it simply what he or she did? Or was it the way in which those events, experiences, etc., were expressed?

Read aloud Text A on page 30 of the Student Book, and then allow two minutes for the students to discuss Q1–Q3 in pairs. Take feedback and share answers as a class.

Elicit the idea that the narrator interprets particular events in a positive way in terms of the girl’s feelings, but from our neutral view as readers – seeing both sides – we can surmise that the girl’s negative actions are genuine – that she is irritated by the narrator (‘ignoring me’, ‘not responding’, ‘unfriended’).

Explore the skills

Ask the students to complete Q4 in pairs. Take feedback as a class. Possible responses to the questions are:

a The present tense is mostly used, which gives an immediacy and sense of us living the narrator’s life with him.

b ‘not responding’, ‘following’, ‘watching’ all create a slightly obsessive tone, a narrow focus.

c The narrator seems obsessive and locked into his own world, emphasised by his use of words such as ‘hidden’ and ‘secret’, which suggest an unhealthy desire.

Read Text B on page 31 and ask the students to complete Q5 using Worksheet 2.3 to record their ideas. Again, take feedback as a class. For Text B, the main things to draw out are the minor sentences (no verbs); the heightened vocabulary (‘golden’, ‘acolyte’ ‘believer’) that conveys a spiritual, elevated tone; an analogy is drawn with the idea of religious worship and almost transcendental power (in the ‘electric’ power).
