Registration Policies

Registration is on a first come, first serve basis

All fees are payable in full at the time of registration unless otherwise advertised.

DON'T WAIT TO REGISTER- Some courses fill up quickly, while others are cancelled if there is insufficient registration prior to the class start date

If a course is full, request to be placed on a waitlist. New courses are sometimes added if there is enough interest

Refunds /Credits

Withdrawal from a program registration with no less than 48 hours’ notice- Full Refund

Withdrawal from a program once it has started- No Refund

Refunds for programs withdrawal due to medical or special circumstances can be requested with appropriate documentation and must be approved by an authorized Recreation and Culture staff member. Refunds will be pro-rated base on withdrawal approval date and a $10 administration fee will be applied.

Memberships

Refunds for memberships due to medical or special circumstances can be requested with appropriate documentation and must be approved by an authorized Recreation and Culture staff member. Refunds will be pro-rated base on withdrawal approval date and a $10 administration fee will be applied.

Recreation & Programming

Volunteer in a multitude of programs such as art, sports, and special events.

Examples of responsibilities include:

Running or supporting a program (basketball, volleyball and soccer)

Running or supporting skate programs ( public skating, stick and puck)

Helping with a special events

Youth Volunteers (minimum 14yrs)

Youth Volunteers support the recreation team while they gain valuable experiences and even graduation volunteer hours.

Examples of responsibilities include:

Providing assistance in programs (basketball, volleyball and soccer)

Sharing their talents as they mentor younger children.

CHILD SAFETY COURSES

At Home Alone | Ages 10+

In the At Home Alone program important skills are learned through interactive lessons and role play that help make both you and your child more confident when they are at home alone.

Babysitters Training | Ages 11+

The Babysitters Training course is designed to increase confidence and provide a hands-on experience and skills to be a great babysitter. This course teaches everything from responsible caregiving to babysitting job etiquette.

AQUATIC LEADERSHIP COURSES

Bronze Medallion

Pre-requisites: Must be 13 years of age by the last day of the course

Description: The course for all things water rescue and water safety. Learn the foundation of lifesaving and water rescues! Learn how to recognize others in distress and drowning, and learn how to effectively and safely rescue them, in any body of water! This course teaches the foundations of water rescue, and will provide any candidate the skills needed to be a lifesaver around water. Strong swimming skills are recommended.

Bronze Cross

Pre-requisites: Must have successfully completed the Bronze Medallion

Description: Take your foundational rescue skills and techniques, and apply them as an Assistant Lifeguard! Learn how to scan and supervise a pool setting and execute rescues in a team! In this course you will practice more complex and difficult rescues, as well as learn about leadership and how to work within a team dynamic.

SQUASH/WALLYBALL

Squash

Squash is an exhilarating, high-paced, competitive racket and ball sport played by two opposing players, one versus one, within a court that is walled off on all four sides The two players alternate hitting the ball with their racket at playable surfaces of the walls. Squash is also sometimes played with four total players with teams of two.

Wallyball

A fast-paced and fun sport played on a racquetball court where teams of 2 to 4 players volley a ball over a net using volleyball rules with a twist! The walls are in play, adding exciting angles and strategy to the game Great for all skill levels and perfect for indoor recreation

Basketball

Jr NBA is for Grades 4-6 and a national youth initiative designed to develop fundamental skills, sportsmanship and a love for the game of basketball This program is Kidsport approved and supported by City volunteer coaches Registration includes a ball, jersey and Basketball BC membership!

Assessment Night

Players skills are assessed so they can be placed fairly on teams for the duration of the league. Register for the Tuesday assessment night and indicate which night you prefer to play for the season. Request for specific teams will be taken into consideration.

Sports FUNdamentals

This program will provide the those starting out in basketball with very basic ball handling skills, drills and games to develop ability in the sport. These programs will help prepare players for the Jr NBA program.

For aspiring soccer enthusiasts. This is an introduction to the basic skills and rules of soccer.

There will be NO public lanes available for swimming laps on Tuesdays/Thursdays 6:00-7:00pm

PROGRAMS - AQUATICS

Program Descriptions

Adult Lanes and Leisure : Adult Lanes and leisure is available for adults to swim laps, exercise, water walk, hot tub, and enjoy the facility at their leisure. This runs during all operational hours.

The main pool and leisure pool are both available with the exception of the leisure pool being unavailable during Swim Lessons.

There will often be more than 1 lane available, however the following times will be restricted to 1 available lane:

Monday/Wednesday/Friday 11am – 12pm

Monday-Thursday 4pm – 6pm *Subject to change due to bookings.

Parent and Tot: A time where caregivers with toddlers can come and enjoy the water in the Leisure Pool. Enjoy our tot slide, water toys, and water features. Expect to share the leisure pool and hot tub with lots of little kids during this time. Waves & slide are left off.

Family Swim: A time set aside for families with young children to enjoy the warm and shallow water of the wave pool without the crowds. Children must be accompanied by a parent or guardian over the age of 16 years. Waves & slide are left off.

Public Swim: All facilities will be open including the main pool, leisure pool, hot tub, steam room, and sauna. Other water features will be open and running periodically throughout the swim as well, including the bubble pit, rain drop, waves and slide.

Swim Lessons: Organized instructional programs and lessons are being provided. Priority for space will be given to our instructional programs therefore most of the facility is not accessible for public use. There is no access to the leisure pool, and much of the lane pool will be occupied as well. Waves & slide are left off.

Lunchtime Laps: come enjoy our main swimming pool for an hour dedicated to lane swimming. Additional lanes will be added to accomodate increased traffic, ensuring plenty of space for swimmers of all paces! Whether you're looking for a quick workout or a refreshing break, Lunchtime laps is the perfecrt way to energize your afternoon. Please note: the wave pool is closed during Lunchtime Laps.

AQUAFIT Program Information

Deep Aquatfit

Deep-water training provides a unique and open environment free from gravity and impact Classes will incorporate cardiovascular and muscle conditioning exercises. This is a challenging workout for both skilled and unskilled aquatic fitness participants. It is recommended that participants utilize the buoyancy belts (available in the equipment room), however is not mandatory This class takes place in the deep end of the main pool

Jt. Mobility

Helps to relieve pain, maintain or increase range of motion, strengthen weak muscles and improve circulation. This class focuses on stretching and flexibility, as well as muscle strengthening at slow speeds. This class is for those seeking injury rehabilitation, arthritis joint therapy or those wishing to improve their strength and range of motion This class takes place in the wave pool

Shallow water aquafit has the benefit of providing excellent cardio, strength, and flexibility training Aquafit is low impact and stress on the body and is excellence for those who experience joint issues and want to improve in weight bearing activities. Crab 2

Recommended: Completed Octopus Preschool 1

Teaches preschoolers how to safely jump into chest-deep water and how to swim wearing a PFD. They’ll learn submersion skills and continue to work on floats, glides, and kicking with buoyant objects. Orca 3

Recommended: Completed Crab Preschool 2

Teaches preschoolers how to safely jump into chest deep water safely wearing a PFD. They’ll learn how to submerge and exhale underwater, retrieve objects underwater, and will continue developing their floating, gliding and kicking skills.

Sea Lion

Recommended: Completed Orca Preschool 3

Teaches deep water entries and treading water wearing a PFD. Become skilled at retrieving objects from the bottom of the pool in chest-deep water and performing front and side glide. Front crawl wearing a PFD is also introduced.

Narwha

Recommended: Completed

Teaches Swim to Survive® skills wearing a PFD. Front crawl and back crawl are introduced as well as interval fitness training. Also learn how to tread water and perform vertical whip kick with a buoyant aid. *once complete, preschoolers can register in Swimmer 2.

SWIM LESSONS

4 x 15 m.

Swimmer 4

These intermediate swimmers will swim 5 m underwater and lengths of front, back crawl, whip kick, and breaststroke arms with breathing Their new bag of tricks includes the completion of the Canadian Swim to Survive® Standard. They'll cap it all off with front crawl sprints over 25 m and 4 x 25 m front or back crawl interval training

Swimmer 5

These swimmers will master shallow dives, cannonball entries, eggbeater kicks, and in-water backward somersaults They'll refine their front and back crawl over 50 m swims of each, and breaststroke over 25 m. Then they'll pick up the pace in 25 m sprints and two interval training bouts: 4 x 50 m front or back crawl; and 4 x 15 m breaststroke.

Swimmer 6

These advanced swimmers will rise to the challenge of sophisticated aquatic skills including stride entries, compact jumps and lifesaving kicks like eggbeater and scissor kick They'll develop strength and power in head-up breaststroke sprints over 25 m. They'll easily swim lengths of front crawl, back crawl, and breaststroke, and they'll complain about the 300 m workout.

Change Rooms/Washrooms: Please turn off and store cell phones/PDAs/cameras/recording devices when using the change rooms or washrooms Taking pictures within change rooms or washrooms is against the law

NEW: Cell phones are restricted to the viewing area and bleachers within the pool vicinity Swimmers are now permitted to leave their cell phones in the aforementioned areas at their own risk

Cash Counters: For security reasons and to protect the personal information of patrons, taking photos in the cash counter area is prohibited

Public Areas (Lobby, Arena, Courts, Classrooms, Party Room): Photos are permitted in these public areas with the permission of a staff member.

Patrons are encouraged to report any individuals using a cell phone/PDA/camera or other recording device in a suspicious manner to a staff member immediately.

If patrons have any concerns or questions regarding these guidelines, they should talk to the Aquatic Supervisor.

Individuals who do not comply with these guidelines or are using these devices in a suspicious manner will be asked to leave and/or be banned from the facility or be charged by Cranbrook Police Service under the Canadian Criminal Code.

Emergencies

If someone needs your help, please assist if it is safe to do so.

If you witness a dangerous situation or an emergency, notify a staff member immediately. In the event of a major emergency, an alarm may be sounded, and the area evacuated. Please follow staff direction and assist if asked.

Be prepared to provide a statement if you were a witness. It will help staff and emergency responders handle the situation, and help prevent a reoccurrence

Change Rooms

Children ages 0-4 years old may use the male or female changes rooms with their parent or guardian

Children of the opposite gender ages 5 years or older must use the family change room or the change room of their gender

Family Change Room is for use by parents with children up to ages 12 years old and individuals who require assistance or privacy due to special circumstances. A parent or guardian must accompany their child when using the family change room. Family Change Room is gender neutral.

Lost, Stolen, Damaged Items

Lost or stolen items are not the responsibility of the City of Cranbrook’s Recreation and Culture Department. Clients are encouraged to leave valuable items at home, or locked away if lockers are available for use.

The City of Cranbrook’s Recreation and Culture Department is not responsible for damage to vehicles that take place on municipal property

Private Promotion/Business

Individuals are not permitted to promote products or services they represent while using the pool External fitness instructors, swimming instructors, therapistsand personal trainers are not permitted to privately train or host classes at the pool unless authorized by Municipal staff

Release, Waiver, and Indemnity

The participant (or parent or guardian if Participant is under the age of 18) voluntarily assumes any risk of injury or damage in connection with the use of services or facilities, and releases, discharges, and agrees to indemnify and save harmless the City of Cranbrook and its employees, agents, and volunteers from any liability, claim, demand, or cost whatsoever incurred arising out of the participation of the Participant in the program at the facility.

Seniors’ Knitting Program

A program where seniors can meet to share and learn knitting techniques. The knitting program promotes fine motor skills, creativity, social connection, and combats loneliness and depression

Scrapbooking Crop

Timeline: irregular, generally once per month from September through May

Weekend-long sessions where participants bring their own scrapbooking projects to work on. Scrapbooking in a group promotes socialization, decreases stress and anxiety, exercises cognitive skills, and enhances overall well-being.
