Learner success story
Many of our learners use the Community to Campus programme as a stepping stone to earning a degree and kickstarting a new career.
Harriet is one of them. She began volunteering for Cadwyn Housing Association, because she wanted to give back to society. She was encouraged to enrol on a course that could lead to continued education and employment opportunities in the housing sector.
After completing the Communities and Health accredited course, Harriet completed the Foundation leading to BA/BSc Social Sciences degree and graduated three years later with a housing degree from our Cardiff School of Education & Social Policy.
Harriet’s four-year education journey, from Widening Access course to graduation, was completed alongside being a mum, running a cleaning business and volunteering with Cadwyn.
Harriet has now secured her dream job working with vulnerable people as a manager at a housing association.
“Going back to education has been so rewarding and showed me that learning doesn’t have to end at school. Completing a Widening Access course is a great way of deciding if education is for you. It’s free, so you won’t lose anything but might gain an awful lot from it, as I did. The Widening Access course was the steppingstone that has allowed me to achieve my degree and full-time employment in an industry I love.”
“It was daunting stepping into the lecture theatre for the first time. No one in my family has been to university, so I didn’t have anyone to ask what to expect. But I quickly met lots of like-minded people on the course who were on a similar journey to my own and had returned to education. Seeing other adult learners who were also balancing family life and work was so inspiring and spurred me on.”
“I had brilliant support at Cardiff Met from the lecturers who were so accommodating and understanding of my situation. That made returning to education a positive experience. There’s nothing stopping me now.”
