uddenly got that festive feeling? Us too. And a swag of Christmas decorations has just landed in store to help you bring sparkle to your home and neighbourhood. There’s something for everyone, whether you’re a chic fairy-light type or a full-tilt Christmas fan seeking a yard packed with excitement. Or all of the above!
Our festive lights story (page 11) caters for all tastes and all ages, with street-envy inspiring decorations out the front, a cute mini Christmas village idea for windowsills, a superfun disco tent set-up for the teens in the backyard and a chill-out retreat for grown-ups beneath a marquee.
The task list can get a bit daunting as we head into year end, but we’ve made it easy by addressing problem areas: kitchen and bathroom updates; deck care and styling; plus gifts for your favourite people and pets. Our project of the month (page 106) shows how you can assemble and decorate a kit cubby in time for Christmas Day, and we’ve lined up the tools that help make life easier at this time of year (page 87).
You can also look to our special section on The Block for inspiration – we showcase the best of the final rooms and outdoor spaces unveiled on Nine this month (page 41). And if you just want to take a few minutes to breathe, lose yourself in a gorgeous Canberra-fringe garden (page 26). Finally mature enough to withstand the nibbles of local wildlife, it’s a delightfully calming vision in white and green. Enjoy the issue,

FROM
‘FINE’ TO FINISHED. Elevate the look, feel and functionality.

What’s in the pot? Croton ‘Mammy’ (Codiaeum variegatum)
Plant name: Mammy
Plant age: Around five years old
Plant parent: Cindy
Climate: Originally it lived in our Sydney bathroom but it was most unhappy, so I moved it outside into the garden under a large tree and it has been happy ever since. Where did it come from? My daughter bought it for me as a ‘just because’ gift.
Essential care: Positioned in a spot that gets morning sun then in filtered light for the rest of the day, Mammy has found the perfect home. It loves a good drink of water at least once a week in winter and a bit more often in summer.
Beauty treatment: I use a controlled-release fertiliser, which lasts 12 months.
Best feature: I love its year-round patterned and colourful leaves, and the mix of colours – green, red, orange and yellow – are my favourites!

Lean into leisure time with these online buys.

Now’s the time to put in summer faves – cheery flowers and vegie patch heroes. And maybe a birdbath or sculpture, too!
Sow annuals such as zinnias, cosmos, sunflowers, rudbeckia and marigolds for colour right through the warm months. Weave them through the vegie patch to help attract beneficial insects and pollinators.
Cut back wisteria’s long, whippy stems to around six buds from the main branch. This tidies the plant and encourages more flowers next spring.
Plant heat-loving vegies like tomatoes, capsicums, chillies, cucumbers, zucchini and sweetcorn. Pop in basil, chives, oregano, thyme and flat-leaf parsley, too. In tropical and subtropical zones, you can put in sweet potatoes, rosella, okra and eggplant.

Bring interest to the garden by making a focal point. Position a statement pot, urn, birdbath or sculpture among flowerbeds, at the end of a path or in a bare corner to draw the eye.
Get some hot stuff happening!
If you shifted indoor plants closer to the window in winter, move them back now to avoid leaf scorch as the sun begins to intensify. Follow with a liquid feed to promote lush, healthy growth.

After applying fertiliser near edible plants, delay harvesting for a few days and rinse well before cooking and eating. If using products to deal with pests, diseases or weeds, or when handling compost or mulch, read the label, follow instructions and wear gloves, a mask and protective gear. Always store all garden chemicals and products out of reach of children and pets.

Fill containers or borders with a few sensory treasures.

Lamb’s ear (Stachys byzantina)
The velvety leaves are perfect for tactile exploration and add a silvery glow to garden beds and borders.
Flannel flower (Actinotus helianthi)
Woolly-textured, star-shaped blooms that feel soft to the touch and make excellent cut flowers, too.

Lemon balm (Melissa officinalis)
An easy-to-grow herb with bright green leaves that release a fresh lemon scent when touched or crushed.
Clear mess around the yard in no time with this lightweight blower kit. At just 1.6kg, it’s perfect for quickly shifting grass clippings, dirt and debris from paths, decks and tight spaces. The included speed nozzle boosts performance for wet leaves, while the 4.0Ah battery and fast charger will keep you powered up. ●

Try these quick, easy and wallet-friendly ways to fix up the kitchen and bathroom, just in time for holiday guests.
Words Jane Parbury

The kitchen and bathroom are the spaces most seen and used by visitors, so you want them looking their best. Sometimes a few simple fixes can take your rooms from modest to magnificent. Here’s how.
Start with a thorough clean. Clear out the pantry and the fridge, binning anything out of date and wiping down shelves as you go. Tackle appliances such as the oven, then work through the room from the top down, cleaning cupboards inside and out and remembering often-ignored bits like the tops of wall cabinetry, skirtings and window tracks. Drawers beneath the kitchen worktop tend to be crumb magnets, so pay particular attention to those. Do the same in the bathroom, discarding ancient lotions and potions and slivers of soap. With tiled splashbacks and walls, grout may eventually resist cleaning. A grout pen can disguise light soiling, but in tougher cases you may have to scrape back the old grout, apply new and reseal it. If sealant around wet areas is looking mouldy, remove and replace it.

Space savers Maximise every bit of your pantry with nifty storage solutions.

There are many ways to enhance your existing storage options. Use tiered shelf organisers or expandable spice racks to maximise vertical space, suggests Taylah King, Bunnings national associate buyer for kitchen and appliances. “They make it easy to see and access items at the back of cupboards,” she says. Storage accessories that can be retrofitted to existing cabinetry expand their functionality. Tiered pull-outs bring pantry goodies within reach and rotating baskets turn hard to reach corner storage into easy and effortless access to everything you need, says John Harrison from Kaboodle Kitchen. And boost kitchen storage with organiser inserts: “Trimmable cutlery trays can be easily cut to size for a custom fit in any drawer,” says Taylah.
A seamless bin system is worth its weight in gold, especially in an expanded household. “Upgrade your space with a pull-out cabinet bin system,” suggests Taylah. “These bins tuck away neatly, making recycling and waste separation effortless while keeping your kitchen looking tidy and modern.” There are various configurations to choose from, so you can find an option that fits seamlessly into your routine, adds John. It’s harder to hide the bin in bathrooms, so consider form as well as function. Pick a finish that chimes visually with other items (such as the toilet brush holder) for a considered look.
For an impactful update, break out the paint, remembering to choose a specialist kitchen and bathroom formula that can cope with moisture-prone spaces. If walls are in good condition with just a few marks, a touch up here and there might be all you need. For a full wall, try sugar soap wipes for speedy prep, and stick to the same colour as the original to make it a one-coat job. Alternatively, painting just the cabinets refreshes the space and is quicker than tackling an entire room, suggests stylist Tilly Roberts (@tillroberts). Tile paint can give a clean, new feel to splashbacks and bathroom walls, as well as covering grimy grout, but be careful using it behind cooktops, and avoid areas of heavy use such as showers and floors. Check the manufacturer’s usage recommendations. The key to successfully painting anything, but especially specialist surfaces such as laminate or tile, is in the preparation, so follow instructions carefully.

“A new tap can really modernise a space and make it much more efficient,” says Tilly. Choose a kitchen tap that suits your lifestyle – if you’ve had trouble cramming large pots under your current mixer, consider a taller, gooseneck style instead, or go for one with a pull-out spray. New bathroom tapware can deliver a style fix. Callum Matheson, Bunnings
national bathroom buyer, says a matt black or brushed brass finish can give a bathroom a fresh, stylish boost without the cost of a full renovation. You’ll need a licensed plumber to effect a tap change, but you can often swap the showerhead yourself.
“A new showerhead is an effortless way to add comfort and style to your daily routine,” says Andy Grigor of GWA (supplier of Caroma, Methven, Clark and Dorf brands).
“Fuss-free updates like cutlery and utensil drawer insert organisers make meal prep easier and look great, too“
John Harrison/Kaboodle Kitchen
6
Pay attention to the details. “A simple swap of kitchen handles can elevate your space in minutes,” says John Harrison. “A finishing touch that brings personality and polish to your kitchen.” This is a simple way to refresh the bathroom, too, and you can make the swap even easier by choosing handles the same size as the old ones, so you can use the same drill holes.

A spare bit of wall that could accommodate floating shelves, or a freestanding unit for an unused corner, could supply more storage. Open shelving is a multi-pronged solution – it gives an airier feel than closedin cabinets, makes the contents easily accessible and can even create a feature of everyday items. If you’re installing shelves, make sure your wall, anchors and the shelves themselves can easily accommodate the weight of the items you want to display.
Finesse the little things. Plants add eyecatching freshness – consider a row of summery herbs for the kitchen shelf or windowsill, or a pretty hanging planter in the corner of the bathroom. Artwork can distract from daggy decor anywhere in the home, but be aware of the effects of grease and moisture, and stick to inexpensive framed prints. In the bathroom, swap out the mirror, suggests Callum Matheson. “A framed or arched mirror can instantly modernise the space and make the bathroom feel larger.”
You’ll need a licensed electrician for this upgrade, but having new lighting installed is a particularly effective revamp. Feature pendants over the kitchen bench or wall lights beside a vanity mirror can double as task lighting and decor. Dimmable ambient lighting, generally delivered via recessed ceiling lights, is especially useful in eat-in kitchens –you can turn the light up when you’re working and down when you’re dining. Accent lighting in the shape of LED strips – positioned along shelves or below a shaving cabinet, for example – can deliver both functional task lighting and gentle ambience. Light fittings intended for bathrooms or near water-prone areas like the sink must be rated for such use.

Think outside the box. Position a bar cart in an out-ofthe-way part of the kitchen so your guests can help themselves to a drink without getting in the way of the cook. Decant washing-up liquid and hand soap into smart dispensers – get extra points for hands-free models – and invest in new towels to replace crispy threadbare ones.
CLUTTER BUSTERS
Whether you’re a homeowner or a renter needing nonpermanent solutions, smart new kitchen accessories can help to make the most of your space. For cupboards, these include pull-out wireware in various sizes and two-tier options for easy access to everyday essentials, plus tiered organisers for stacking goods in small spaces. New cutlery trays help make light work of sorting drawers – some can be trimmed to fit drawers – while mix-andmatch bins to suit various styles help keep

In the bathroom, consider adding a heated rail. “This adds comfort and convenience, warms – and dries –towels quickly, and is easy to install with a simple plug-in option,” says Callum. Luke Di Michiel from Caroma points to extra robe hooks for a touch of festive hospitality. And, he says, “Give your bathroom a quick refresh with a new toilet seat, because even holiday guests deserve a throne fit for the season!” ●

Patience and perseverance have brought glorious rewards in this relaxed Canberra garden.
Words Kirsten Craze Photography and styling Tess Argirellis

Tess and Sean live with their three children just outside Queanbeyan, south-east of Canberra. The couple bought their acreage a decade ago, but their dream garden took a back seat while their family home took shape on the semi-rural site. They moved in when Siena (now nine) was a bub, soon followed by Mila (seven), Charlie (three) plus the family’s cavoodle, Coco. “The garden has been a labour of love that we’re still working on, and it’s a beautiful way to all spend time together,” says Tess.
As a photographer of homes and landscapes with a lifelong love of gardening, Tess Argirellis (kinstudioco. com) knew she had an eye for detail and a budding green thumb. But when she and husband Sean broke ground on their dusty two-hectare block 10 years ago, they quickly realised that weather, wildlife and careful budgeting would set the tone for the family’s outdoor sanctuary.
Today, their lovingly curated gardens boast established olive trees, lavender and roses plus natives including happy wanderer, cushion bush and coastal rosemary. But the verdant retreat wasn’t always so photogenic.
“When we first moved here, it was rocky, dusty and dry – and we were in the middle of a long drought,” says Tess. “It was probably the worst time ever to be starting a garden. The soil was terrible, and there was one lonely wattle tree. We had a very blank canvas.”
As the property abuts other neighbours on acreage, the home’s orientation was planned to give the illusion of isolated country calm. “The design of our house makes sure the outside is visible from every aspect. We wanted to be able to enjoy the views and feel connected to nature. We can’t really see any other houses,” says Tess.
The family tends to gravitate towards the back garden, the pool and barbecue area where the rolling hills paint a peaceful backdrop. In winter, the fire pit in the alfresco entertainment space becomes the anchor.
Silvered pine structures add to the journey along crushed granite paths, with towering ‘Capital’ ornamental pear trees beyond.

Individual plant selection was a deliberate choice that honours the home’s bush setting, as well as speaking to Sean’s Greek heritage.
“It’s got a Mediterranean influence, especially with the colour tones. The olives and sages blend really well with the bush colours around us and help settle the house into the landscape,” says Tess.
Canberra’s unique environment played a pivotal role in plant choice, with every variety handpicked to be future proof. “It’s a really harsh climate. We get hot, dry summers and then frosts in winter. Canberra also gets such a late start to the warm weather, so you have to be patient when planting,” adds Tess.
“We do have a water tank, but if we’re not getting much rain – like in our first couple of years – the tank never really fills up. Now, thankfully, most of our trees are more established, so hopefully they’ll survive any long dry spells in the future.”

“I chose plants that are drought tolerant, which is important in our climate, but still create a lush feel”
Tess/garden creator
The couple laid charming herringbone paved paths to smooth access to every part of the garden. “They feel like cobblestone pathways that have been there for years. Then we planted cottagestyle plants that spill over the harder edges of the herringbone to soften it all,” says Tess. Lamb’s ear, catmint, Mexican sage, lavender ‘Hidcote’ and ‘Iceberg’ standard roses bring colour and scent throughout the seasons.

Tess finds her work photographing homes and gardens very inspiring, “because you’re often working in the best spaces in your region,” she says. However, replicating those garden goals on a budget has been an ongoing challenge.
“We’d spent everything on the house, so we had no money for the garden at first. We could only afford the smallest plants at Bunnings, which just meant being patient while they grew.”
Initially, Tess says the couple had a very hands-on approach to their landscaping. “We did everything ourselves in the first five or six years. We spent a lot of time and energy just bringing in good-quality soil,” she says. “In 2020 we engaged a landscaper to help with the herringbone paths, but the bulk of the planting we’ve done as a family. Charlie has his own little Bunnings wheelbarrow that he loves pushing around, helping us shovel dirt!”
While their slice of paradise is now their private oasis, the family have ultimately learnt that building on the border of the bush means sharing the fruits of their labour.
“My gosh, the wildlife!” exclaims Tess. “We loved the idea of kangaroos when we first moved here. They are beautiful when you see them lazing on the front lawn, but it’s a bit of a different story when they’ve eaten all the new leaves off my jasmine!
“Then there are the wombats who like to dig plenty of holes,” she adds. “But the best thing is the echidnas, especially the cute little babies we see foraging around every now and then.”
Tess says these days the family is co-existing happily alongside the locals. “Now, whenever I put in new little plants, I just cut up some wire fencing to surround them for a few months and let them get established.”
An appealing lounge setting offers gorgeous views of the region’s hills. “In the mornings when the weather is warmer, first thing when everyone’s still waking up, I go out to our comfy outdoor lounge,” says Tess. “I just sit in the sun for a couple of minutes of peace with my chai tea.”

‘Natchez’ crepe myrtle trees provide height and drama, their blooms in keeping with the garden’s predominantly white flower palette. Lamb’s ear, lomandra and gaura form thriving borders beneath.

Expand your entertaining spaces with these seven tips for a brilliant backyard.
Words Shelley Tustin

Christmas is coming and the crowds are about to descend. With a little sprucing up and a few strategic additions, your garden can become a gathering space, setting you up for alfresco fun! Read on for tips to get your backyard looking its best and to make every corner ready for entertaining.

To get your garden looking vibrantly festive, bring in some colour and contrast. Laying down a fresh coat of wood mulch instantly helps tidy beds – while helping to retain moisture, too. For maximum contrast, consider using black mulch, which gives an incredibly dramatic, modern effect against your plants. For a hit of cheery hues, consider supplementing foliage with a palette of bright floral colour. Horticulturist Tammy Huynh, author of The Plant Book, suggests paying a visit to your local Bunnings nursery and heading to the Potted Colour section. “Here you’ll likely find petunias, snapdragons, marigolds, lobelias, impatiens and salvias, which are all perfect for injecting instant colour into your garden,” she says. “While not in the Potted Colour section, you may also find some hydrangeas already in bloom – snap them up! Geraniums and fuchsias are great, too.”
If your grass isn’t looking its best after winter, landscape designer and Nylex ambassador Inge Jabara suggests giving it a slightly shorter mow as temperatures rise, and top-dressing it with sand or a quality lawn soil. “It’s important to match the product to your lawn type,” she says. “For example, Sir Walter Buffalo performs best with lawn sand, while some couch varieties prefer a soil blend. Top dressing helps smooth out dips and undulations, creating the perfect surface for backyard cricket.” Apply liquid fertiliser fortnightly during spring growing season. “For quick and effective application, I recommend a hose-on option – just ensure your hose reaches all of the lawn,” says Inge. “If weeds have crept in, treat them with a broadleaf herbicide, again using a hose-on liquid bottle for convenience. Finally, keep the water up during the first few weeks of warmer weather, particularly if there isn’t much rain.”
Planting pops of colour in garden beds and pots brings good cheer and bright visual points.

To keep the festive magic alive after sunset, get creative with lighting. It’s all about sparkle – no floodlights, please!
● Turn an outdoor tree into a Christmas version by stringing fairy lights through branches.
● Use pretty batterypowered lanterns to create a practical outdoor table centrepiece.
● Place battery-powered candles (so there’s no fire risk!) down steps or stationed along pathways to draw guests into the garden.
● Use solar stake lights – or battery-powered candles again – to spotlight decor features such as screens and pots.
● Too hot for a fire pit?
Stage a tangle of fairy lights in the fire pit for a twinkly alternative to a backyard blaze.
● Pin solar rope lights inside garden edging to subtly define the garden beds.
Take a seat
Create an inviting spot to relax and chat under a shady tree.
Maximise your entertaining areas by making the most of every bit of your garden. “There’s often a corner that goes unused – I like to turn it into part of the entertaining space,” says Inge Jabara. “A feature pot with a lemon or lime tree works beautifully; perfect for summer drinks, but also as an inviting focal point. Place a two-seater bench in front.”
A path can also help to draw guests further into the garden. “Reward their efforts with something to discover, like a small table setting, water feature or sculpture – or install a pergola or tall structure that can be glimpsed from the other end of the garden.” Before purchasing a garden structure, check it will comply with local council regulations, and follow the manufacturer’s instructions for installation and use.
Double down on the decor to turn your backyard into an outdoor room that’s pretty enough for company. Dress blank walls with artwork or mirrors – making sure you choose weather-hardy versions suitable for the outdoors, of course. Decorative garden screens are equally impactful and are available in a range of patterns. As a bonus, they can be used to enhance privacy or to block an undesirable view. “When paired with contrasting colours and textures, they instantly lift a space with very little effort,” says the team from Tuscan Path. “A weathered rust screen makes a dramatic statement against a sleek black fence, while lush greenery softens the look and crisp white furniture ties it all together. The combination of earthy tones, clean lines and natural textures creates a modern, cohesive space that feels high-end without the high cost.”
Pots are a fantastic way to style up an outdoor zone and make it feel welcoming. For a contemporary take on clustered pots, the team from Tuscan Path suggests staggering different-sized pots throughout your space. “Rather than grouping them tightly, repeat the same pot style in varying heights and ‘soldier’ them along pathways, between furniture pieces or at the edges of a deck to create a sense of rhythm and cohesion,” they advise. “This draws the eye through the area, creates a sense of flow, and makes the pots feel like part of the architecture rather than just an accessory.” They recommend choosing plants based on the pots – for example, put sculptural bird of paradise in tall, angular containers, and softer varieties like lavender or trailing plants in rounded pots. “Rule of thumb: let the plant’s form guide the pot – structured plants pair with clean lines; flowing greenery with softer curves.”
Summer days can get hot, hot, hot. To help stop your guests from overheating, make sure your garden is equipped with adequate shade solutions. Folding-arm awnings can be small, for shading a window or mini patio, or big enough to cover an entire outdoor dining area – and can even be motorised for added convenience. Shade sails are the most cost-effective option, plus they can cover a massive area and are straightforward to install.
Plants and trees might take some time to grow, but their good looks and incomparable cooling abilities are worth the wait. “The deciduous Japanese maple and crepe myrtle are gorgeous shade trees, but they will take time to establish before they provide substantial shade in summer,” says Tammy Huynh. “For quicker cover, climbers like wisteria, star jasmine, ornamental grapevine, passionfruit or climbing roses can be trained over a pergola or arbour.”

Screen time
Create privacy and a vertical garden with a slatted screen.

Equip your alfresco area with smart hosting solutions, so you’re ready to party at a moment’s notice. Look for multipurpose furniture –stools that can double as side tables, bench seats and modular sofas that can easily fit a crowd. Bench seats with storage are even smarter – these can be used to stash cushions or outdoor lanterns, which can be quickly whipped out when company calls.
Cool drinks are an entertaining essential on hot days; use a sizable cooler, or look for outdoor tables with clever coolers hidden inside. Better yet, invest in both, so you can have multiple outdoor beverage stations! ●

As the houses near completion, the teams tackle front and backyards plus all-important practical spaces.
Kitchens might sell houses, but the secondary spaces are just as important. At the pointy end of the competition, the teams have been tackling the workhorses of their houses – laundries, mudrooms, garages and sheds – as well as creating gorgeous guest rooms.
First impressions count, so the teams pulled out all the stops to layer their front gardens with lush landscaping, while backyards were turned from dirt pits to destinations for outdoor entertaining and relaxing.

Emma and Ben integrated high-end hotel-style amenities, from a TV to a kitchenette (see previous page), plus a walk-in wardrobe and ensuite. Colours were chosen to tie into the rest of the house, including a feature wall in British Paints
Extra features and maximum comfort combine in guest suites with a VIP vibe.
With Daylesford’s roaring tourist trade in mind, the teams needed to create next-level guest rooms. “A room that the potential buyer

could rent out for Airbnb or be home to the in-laws,” Emma and Ben explain. Above all, though, the rooms needed to be beautiful and restful. As Han and Can say, “We wanted it to feel serene and indulgent, like a boutique stay that guests would never want to leave.”
Not just a spare bed, the teams aimed to deliver self-contained havens, like mini hotel suites, to accommodate guests’ every need. Emma and Ben got top marks for creative use of

space here, incorporating a walk-in wardrobe behind a false wall and including a galley kitchenette, which created a hotel-style hallway into the bedroom. All of the teams made space for sitting areas – plush chairs and side tables – to complete inviting, well-appointed guest quarters.

Enjoyed for relatively short periods of time, a guest room is an ideal space in which to make a statement. Serene, earthy tones met the brief of a tranquil retreat but, within this palette, each of the teams created a wow moment with wallpaper, colour drenching, textured walls or rich hues. Sonny and Alicia cocooned their guest room using colour, covering walls and ceiling in burgundy red; Robby and Mat impressed with a hand-painted mural; while Britt and Taz bathed their room in warmth with terracotta tones and an eye-catching wall of walnut-stained Porta timber. “We wanted this space to feel slightly more ‘country’ with more autumnal tones,” they explain.

Britt and Taz’s half wall of walnut-stained timber brings warmth and texture to the room.

Han and Can incorporated their signature arch detail in a panelled feature in Colorbond Manor Red, which contrasts with cool-white walls in British Paints Love Note.

A single wow wall – a handpainted botanical mural by Melissa Macfarlane of Kabinett Studio – stole the show in Robby and Mat’s bedroom, which they cleverly echoed with furnishings in matching hues.

Highly functional spaces – pantries, mudrooms, laundries and powder rooms – deliver an everyday hit of joy.

A tailor-made spot to hang your coat, tea bags within reach of the kettle, the perfect sized hamper for dirty laundry – these small things add up to a house that functions satisfyingly smoothly. The teams tweaked their floor plans, giving and taking space to ensure the best flow. Han and Can explain, “We reworked the slab and framing to allow for a larger butler’s pantry and added a direct external door from the laundry, so you can take washing outside without weaving
Darren Palmer loves the ‘1980s glamour’ of
past someone prepping food. We also shifted the garage entry so you step straight into the mudroom rather than the kitchen, making it easier to unload bags, remove shoes and keep the main living space tidy.”
Within these hardworking spaces the finer points made the difference, like elevated laundry appliances for easy access, open shelving, oodles of bench space and, of course, storage. “As a mum, I know how important storage is and how you can never, ever have too much of it!” says Britt.

pantry, as well as its excellent functionality.
Powder rooms are viewed briefly by guests, and laundries not at all, but both deserve a shot of glamour.

Top points for luxury went to Sonny and Alicia’s powder room, which includes statement stone, a striking basin, wallpaper and moody lighting. Beaumont Tiles Pierre Blanco Limestone Structured Textured Tile 400mm x 600mm was their choice for the floor.

Stone-look benches and brass-hued tapware spell warmth and luxury in Han and Can’s laundry, and tie in with the finishes of the adjacent pantry.

“This is the space to be a little wilder and more creative,” say Britt and Taz of their powder room. Its pretty rosy palette includes textured wall paint in a soft terracotta hue.

Robby and Mat moved their laundry to allow more space in the pantry, showing how a compact space can still deliver on style and efficiency. They used Beaumont Tiles Tuscano Sand Structured Microtec Textured French Pattern on their laundry floor.

Lavish wallpaper is balanced by a modern pedestal sink in Emma and Ben’s powder room. Beaumont Tiles Home Kit Kat Grape Emboss Gloss form the splashback.

Britt and Taz reflected on their own family life to deliver a super-practical laundry, complete with a pull-out hamper to corral dirty clothes, and Beaumont Tiles Crossland Match Textured Tile 597mm x 597mm on the floor.
Touch of class Fabric-look wallpaper adds an extra textural dimension to

While functionality is all important, giving these practical spaces a dash of flair delivers microdoses of joy as one moves through everyday chores. As judge Darren Palmer said of Britt and Taz’s creamy palette, “I never thought I’d be standing in a laundry and calling it sexy!”
Splashing out on lovely materials also ensures a sense of flow and connection with the rest of the home, as seen in Robby and Mat’s woodsy timber-and-green tones, and Han and Can’s deliberate repetition of shapes. They explain, “Our bold chequered garage flows into a playful peach diamondcheck in the butler’s pantry and laundry, creating a visual connection between zones.”
A mudroom is a justifiable luxury, especially in a country setting. Britt and Taz say, “Daylesford will often have a lot of rain – we wanted to ensure there was a space where you could walk right in from your garage, take a seat to pull off your boots and hang your coat.” A comfy upholstered bench seat was a must-have in all the houses, as well as cupboard storage, shelves for shoes and hooks for hats and coats.

“There are heaps of clever, budget-friendly ways to level up your space — think strip lighting, a fresh coat of paint, smart storage solutions or even swapping out your door hardware. Small changes, big impact!”

A Ryobi ‘Link’ modular storage system keeps everything from tools to sports gear tidy and accessible.

As the first area residents will see as they drive into their home, the garage deserves a splash of magic, which the teams delivered in spades. Visually, the garages offer a taster of the interior decor in colours, patterns, wallpaper and art. Practical inclusions were designed to impress, too,
with well-appointed workbenches and tool storage; an in-built sound system delivering tunes to potter to in Han and Can’s garage; and a plumbed-in car-washing kit in Robby and Mat’s garage. Said judge Marty Fox: “That’s a great addition and will add value to your home.”

Robby and Mat opted for clean and simple styling, but the practical perks speak for themselves, with the integrated car-washing system a highlight.

Chequerboard flooring, gold wallpaper and David Bromley artworks delivered Britt and Taz’s “bougie garage”. Judge Marty said, “This garage feels like we’re actually inside the house.”

All the teams sought to level up with their garage designs, but Han and Can nailed the brief, delivering what judge Marty called “showroom quality in a residential setting”. With dramatic hexagonal ceiling lighting and chequered flooring (which links to the peach checks in their pantry and laundry), plus generous workbenches and a quality sound system, Han and Can describe it as “a space you could happily spend hours in, showing off your favourite toys”.

“We wanted to have a great entertainer’s area, so the terrace is huge,” says Robby. He and Mat also included a built-in barbecue and fridge.

ABOVE Material flow is a highlight of Sonny and Alicia’s backyard, with brick pavers speaking to the brick facade, and pale furniture echoing the timber arbour (see page 59).

Britt and Taz’s pool area features low-maintenance ‘Flame Fighter’ composite decking from Ekodeck, in Sand Dune/Honey Oak, which is suitable for use in bushfire-prone areas.

With plenty of space to play with, the teams delivered lust-worthy backyards.

Pull up a pew and prepare to relax. While pools were the centrepiece, waterside lounging was only the beginning of each backyard plan, with the teams facilitating relaxing activities from barbies to man caves – even a spot of golf!
Inspired by Daylesford’s spas, the teams sought to create soothing outdoor extensions of their tranquil interiors. Britt and Taz explain, “The vision was to create a wellness sanctuary, to encompass what Daylesford is about. We wanted the backyard to feel tranquil”. For them, this was achieved through a country connection, creating a mini farm experience with a greenhouse and chicken coop. “We loved the idea of a farm-totable approach, being able to grow your own herbs, fruit and veg and have chicken eggs.”
Han and Can started with a Japanese Zen-style concept, with an emphasis on curved edges and precision planting for a sense of elegance and flow. Their backyard also reinforces the value of connection, most strikingly with their curved brick fireplace. “We wanted a space that was both beautiful and versatile: a cabana for morning coffees, poolside afternoons with music, and evenings around the fire. Every element was designed to create moments; spaces for reflection, connection and celebration.”

Slip from cool pool to steamy sauna – Emma and Ben impressed with this wellness inclusion. They used Beaumont Tiles Brazilian Slate Black Textured 297mm x 597mm on the floor.

ABOVE Robby and Mat turned a shed into a fully equipped gym. “It’s a huge point of difference for us and we both love it,” says Robby.

Transform a cluttered shed or garage into a sleek, multi-functional space: bunnings. com.au/garage-organisation-tips
Check fire pit manufacturer’s safety/set-up advice and local authority regulations for open fires. Position fire pits away from combustible structures; only burn dry, sustainably forested timber. All pools and pool fencing must conform to your local authority’s safety regulations and guidelines.
An arbour with seating for 30 people commands attention in Sonny and Alicia’s backyard. Judge Marty particularly liked the choice of ProtectorAl pool fence. “The plants you selected will ‘hedge’ alongside it,” he said. Beaumont Tiles EcoStone Silver Glass Structured Mosaic 311mm x 311mm around the pool’s waterline is a subtle but beautiful detail.

With half an acre to play with, the teams filled their backyards with fun-in-the-sun activities. As well as the pools, there are grassed areas for backyard cricket, a bocce court at Sonny and Alicia’s, and a pickleball court and hot tub at Robby and Mat’s. Shed spaces provided the opportunity for out-of-the-box entertainments, too. As well as ticking
off the practicalities with a traditional garden shed, the teams created striking destination rooms. Emma and Ben delivered a mini bar area with a golf simulator; Han and Can turned a shed into an artist’s retreat; Robby and Mat designed a full gym; while Sonny and Alicia aced the ‘shed but extra’ brief by building a traditional garden shed with bonus dartboard, pool table and bar fridge.

With generous frontages to transform, each house offers a unique journey to the front door.
A first impression for visitors, but last on The Block’s build list, the front garden serves as a tantalising taster for what lies beyond the front door. As judge Marty Fox said of Robby and Mat’s frontage, “This is the entree for the main dish and dessert in the backyard.” The teams aimed to create front entrances that stood out but that also reflected the style of their builds, so potential buyers could start to fall in love right from the front gate.
To woo callers, the teams had to think about the approach to their home, laying little breadcrumbs of joy between footpath and front door. Curved paths sweep past prettily landscaped gardens – and a few Easter eggs too: Sonny and Alicia charmed with a reclining kangaroo sculpture, while Han and Can took visitors on a roundabout route via a Japanese raked-sand garden. Emma and Ben combined a sense of arrival with the practicality of a ramp, a winning element that makes the home accessible to all. “To create the right amount of fall for the ramp we needed to extend it way beyond the house,” they explain. “We decided to curve the ramp at the end and create a feature by placing the water sculpture in there.”
Good gardens take time, but the teams laid the foundations for future Edens, planting ornamental trees and
soon-to-be-lush garden beds. Several of the teams drew on a connection to the countryside’s rolling hills, with curves and rounded slopes. Statement trees were a strong element at several of the houses; Emma and Ben anchored their garden scheme around two sculptural bottle trees, while Sonny and Alicia opted for more traditional plantings with a maple tree by the front door and two large Chinese elms. “We planted mature trees to make the front yard feel like it had been there forever,” they said. Judge Darren Palmer loved their simple but sophisticated palette, saying, “Simple is difficult. There are only a few features, but every one of them is well chosen.” He also pointed out that each of Sonny and Alicia’s feature trees is spotlit, so the garden will look equally stunning at night.
Special features create a sense of excitement from the get-go and help a home stand apart. Han and Can channelled Japanese Zen with their sculptural gardens and with a huge cypress torii gate over the driveway, which is then echoed in a smaller arch leading to the guest suite courtyard. Britt and Taz made great use of space with a moonlight cinema, which ticks the ‘wow’ box and guarantees their house will be a magnet for neighbourhood kids. “This is a really good selling feature in an area that would otherwise be quite a dead space,” said judge Marty.

Judge Darren Palmer thought Robby and Mat’s facade was “very Daylesford” with its James Hardie board and batten cladding, and their choice of dark hue (see opposite, far left).

To tie in with their Japanese theme, Han and Can included a grand cypress torii gate to announce one’s arrival.
“The Japanese raked-sand garden and winding path was designed to slow you down, bringing tranquillity to the entry experience“
Han and Can/contestants

Each of the pavilion-style homes is similar in layout, but individual in character, thanks to cladding and colour options. Han and Can contrasted pale (British Paints Sandy Gorge) with dark (British Paints Ace of Clubs); Britt and Taz created a light mood with pale paint and McCormacks ‘Sapphire Blonde’ timber cladding; while Robby and Mat went broody with Colorbond Monument. However, Sonny and Alicia believed their Roman-style brickwork gave them the edge: “We have the distinct advantage of having the only brick home. Our facade automatically stood out from the others.”

Check fire pit manufacturer’s safety/set-up advice and local authority regulations for open fires. Position fire pits away from combustible structures; only burn dry, sustainably forested timber. Take care when selecting your plants as some can be poisonous to children and pets, and check their suitability for your region, as some may be classified as weeds in certain states and territories. †Available to order online or at the Special Orders Desk.
Stained in Feast Watson Black Japan, Emma and Ben’s house nestles discreetly into the landscape. Trees and hardscaping features pop against the dark backdrop.

Stone steppers wend an appealing path into Emma and Ben’s house. Judge Darren Palmer loved the name, The Hills, which he said has “given the house a brand”.

Bring a little paradise to cool climates with these show stoppers.
The bold, glossy, lobed leaves of this evergreen shrub make a striking feature in shaded gardens. Reaching 2-4m tall and wide, it’s more compact (around 1m) in pots. It thrives in cool temperate to subtropical climates and tolerates light frost. Plant in moist, well-draining soil enriched with organic matter, feed in warmer months to promote lush growth and prune as needed for shape.
(Canna x hybrida)
Adding a splash of colour from late spring to autumn, this showy perennial produces tall stalks of red, orange, yellow or pink flowers above green, bronze or variegated foliage. Canna lilies grow up to 2m tall, are suited to most climates and like a spot in full sun with rich, moist soil and good drainage. In cool areas, protect the rhizomes with mulch, or lift and store them over winter.
(Cordyline cvs)
This handsome evergreen has foliage in shades ranging from green to red, pink, orange and yellow. While the most brilliant-coloured varieties flourish in the tropics, there are hybrids that are well suited to cooler climates, with colourful leaves that still evoke a tropical feel. Easy to grow and low maintenance, they do best in full sun to part shade.
BIRD OF PARADISE (Strelitzia reginae)
Its striking, long-lasting display of orange-and-blue flowers throughout the warmer months make this hardy perennial a tropical garden staple. It grows best in warm climates but will also do well in sheltered spots in cooler areas, forming a dense clump up to 2m tall. Plant in full sun or part shade in well-draining soil. ●

If you’ve just installed a new deck, there are a few simple – and fun – things to do before it’s ready for action.
Words Adam Woodhams
You have a brand-new outdoor space – congrats! Dreaming of all the get-togethers it will host is exciting. And a little work and careful planning now will make the time spent on your deck hassle-free and enjoyable. Read our post-build tips to help ensure you’ll be enjoying Christmas lunch out there.
If you have used timber boards, they need to be oiled before use. This simple process extends the life of the timber, helping to protect it from UV damage and excessive drying or moisture penetration. Some decking boards, such as premium merbau, may come pre-oiled, but this is not intended to be the final finish. This manufacturer’s coat is partly to ensure the underside of your decking will be better protected once installed.
If you used treated pine decking boards, you can select from oils with various tints to give it the appearance of other timber such as merbau. The key decision you’ll face when choosing your product is between water-based or oil-based oils. Turn the page to learn more about the different decking oils and how to apply them.

PART 2 OF OUR DEEP DIVE INTO DECKS – GET READY TO ENTERTAIN IN STYLE!
Before applying your chosen decking oil, it’s considered good practice to allow the boards to ‘weather’ somewhat, which lets natural tannins leach out, allowing maximum penetration or adhesion of your product. A typical weathering time is six to 12 weeks but you can accelerate this process by using a tannin and oil remover, followed by a timber prep cleaner. Apply masking tape along walls and around the base of balustrade posts to prevent oil splashes. Choose a time when the deck is dry and before it becomes too warm from direct sunlight.
Set yourself up with a suitable tray to hold your oil, plus a large brush applicator on a long handle; these are great for getting into the gaps and oiling the sides of boards. Apply each coat in a single session and work from a corner towards an exit.

Good oil
A little effort now will pay off in years to come.
WATER-BASED
■ Works as a surface coat.
■ Dries quickly, so can be recoated in as little as one hour.
■ Low odour and lower levels of VOCs (volatile organic compounds).
■ Gives timber UV protection.
■ Lower flammability; especially important in a bushfire zone.
■ Water clean-up.
■ Deeply penetrates and nourishes the timber.
■ Can be slow drying, taking up to a day.
■ Can have an odour that lingers.
■ Offers mould protection and some UV protection. Provides a more traditional timber look.
■ Turps clean-up.

Most decks are in sun for part or all of the day so think about how to keep guests comfortable during peak sunlight hours. Umbrellas The classic style of pop-up outdoor umbrella is known as a market umbrella, where the supporting pole is in the centre of the canopy. They come in a range of different shapes and sizes – choose from round, square or even half-rounds for smaller spaces. A square-canopy umbrella is practical for many dining areas as it’s easier to adjust its position for even coverage. These must be safely secured by fitting them into a suitable weighted base.
For a contemporary take, look at cantilever-type umbrellas, which have a canopy suspended on an arm extending out from the supporting pole. These let you shade a dining, lounging or pool space without the pole intruding. Most cantilever models can be rotated to adjust

coverage. Henry Fudge, Bunnings outdoor furniture buyer, warns these styles must have a heavy base, such as a suitably sized sand- or water-filled one. “They can also be screwed or bolted down,” he says. “Whatever type of umbrella you have, make sure it’s pulled down and properly stowed when not in use. And when folded down, use an umbrella cover to prolong the life of the canopy, too.” Gazebos and pergolas For more substantial sun protection, consider adding a kit gazebo or pergola. These come in a range of sizes, styles and materials, and some have polycarbonate roofing that allows light through while screening out UV rays. Others have adjustable louvres for full or partial sun block-out. Ensure any semi-permanent pergola or gazebo is appropriate for prevailing weather conditions and that you can secure it properly to your deck. Permanent pergolas may require local council permission.
Once your deck is oiled and dry, it’s time for furniture. It’s important to bear in mind the scale of your space and choose accordingly. Allow for foot traffic around doorways and steps and leave about a metre clearance around furniture for easy circulation. If you don’t have space for a large dining setting, think about bench seating, which can take extra guests.
If you like timber outdoor furniture, remember it will also need oiling to help prevent drying and cracking. A weatherproof storage box is a great idea – these can be used to store cushions when not in use and some boxes can be used as overflow seating, too. An outdoor rug will add a welcoming touch, and consider using a barbecue mat for your cooking area to avoid grease and oil stains.

Reduce the risk of rot by regularly sweeping or using a blower to clear leaves from between decking boards
The real finishing touch for your new outdoor space is to add plants. You’ll find a great range of pots and planters in store but how to choose? Square and rectangular planters are terrific space savers as they can fit flush into corners or against walls, and lightweight fibre cement or composite pots can help make your containers more manageable. Extra-large ones should be positioned above the posts of your deck to take the static load. Use pot feet to improve drainage and reduce the risk of staining or rotting of decking boards, or wheeled pot trolleys so you can easily move plants into sun, shade or shelter from wind. Try grouping a few similar pots of different sizes together for a designer look, or placing a pot either side of a set of stairs or the entry to your home. Dwarf citrus trees look fabulous and are a perfect choice for pots on the deck, and a herb pot kept close to your barbecue or outdoor kitchen can provide fresh flavour whenever you need it. ●

Summertime storms can wreak havoc on the mains power grid, especially in rural areas, but Jackery can help keep lights on and appliances working during seasonal blackouts. The Jackery ‘Explorer 2000 Plus’ portable power station is easily capable of powering a household’s essential appliances, and you can pump up your power capacity with a Jackery battery pack. Jackery power stations are chargeable via solar panels too, so if a severe weather event knocks out power for days or weeks, you can still stay up and running.

From wi-fi timers to water tanks, smart tools can help keep your plants happy and your bills down this summer.
Words Georgia Madden

Another summer is on its way and the last thing you want is to see months of gardening effort shrivel in a single heatwave. Miss a watering session or two and vegie patches can collapse, lawns crisp up and some plants can be gone for good. The key is setting yourself up now so your garden is ready to face the heat. And you don’t need to break a sweat to keep plants hydrated. Today’s smart irrigation systems take on the hard work, so you can relax while the garden takes care of itself. Combine them with simple, timetested methods to minimise water loss and you’ll keep your garden thriving even through the hottest months.
If you’ve ever lost track of time with the hose running, you probably know how wasteful hand watering can be. Tap timers can address that issue, giving you a set-and-forget solution. Attach one to your outdoor tap, set the program and let it do the work, advises Stephen Payne, Bunnings national buyer for water systems and irrigation. “We have a new variety of tap timers arriving this summer, both digital and wi-fi enabled,” he says. “They make it easy to water your garden responsibly and efficiently – whether you’re at home or away.”
For larger yards that have spaces with differing water needs, timers with multiple outlets let you water lawns and garden beds on individual schedules. And here’s a simple saver tip: set watering timings for early mornings or evenings, when evaporation is at its lowest.
Drip irrigation is another clever option. Rather than spraying water around indiscriminately, drip systems deliver it right to the roots, explains landscaper designer Grant Boyle of Fig Landscapes. “Deep, focused watering at the root zone is always more effective than splashing water over foliage,” he says. Drip systems also achieve a watering consistency that helps plants thrive.
Wi-fi controllers and moisture sensors can turn watering into a task you don’t need to think about, says Rebecca Kieft of RWC Reliance Worldwide Corporation (suppliers of Holman garden products). “Smart irrigation takes out the guesswork,” she says. “Your garden can respond to weather and soil conditions in real time.” For example, a Holman wi-fi tap timer and hub lets you program different zones via the Holman Home app and skip cycles if it rains. Optional moisture sensors hold off watering if the soil is already damp. Systems like these are a lifesaver for holidays, says Stephen. “It’s always tricky coming home from a summer break to a garden that looks like the Sahara,” he says. “Smart irrigation prevents that.”
Orientation also plays a role. A north-facing lawn in full sun or a windy spot will dry out faster than shaded beds. “Smart systems allow you to set up separate zones with their own schedules,” says Rebecca. “It’s a sustainable way to water according to your garden’s unique microclimate.”
Not everything needs a digital upgrade. Some of the most simple and affordable solutions are hugely effective. A 50–70mm layer of mulch

Before you plan any rainwater tank installation, check with your local council and water authority and follow all regulations for use.
applied in late winter helps lock in soil moisture and protect roots from summer heat. “We like to add Dynamic Lifter – basically a natural chicken-manure fertiliser – before mulching, and mix in water crystals underneath,” says Grant. This gives plants a nutrient boost and helps the soil hold onto water longer.
Self-watering pots are another handy option, especially for balconies or renters. They contain a reservoir that can keep roots hydrated for days, while water crystals mixed into soil slowly release moisture when plants need it. And don’t forget the basics: check hose fittings and taps regularly. Even a small leak can waste hundreds of litres over time.
Choosing plants suited to your climate – and positioning them wisely – makes a big difference, too. Group thirsty varieties together, while hardy natives can do with less watering. With the right mix of new gadgets and old-school know-how, you’ll keep your garden green, your water bills down and your weekends free to enjoy – not rescue – your outdoor space. ●

Capture and preserve water for your garden, and reduce its wastage, with a little planning and the right products.

A water tank is another great way to help keep your garden healthy and save on bills. You’ll find slimline, modular and even under-deck options that tuck neatly into courtyards and awkward spaces, as well as larger tanks for big backyards. Smaller tanks can provide backup during dry spells or water restrictions for irrigating the balcony, courtyard or small garden, and may help cut your mains water use year-round. Stored water from larger tanks can also be used for topping up the pool, washing the car and, if it’s plumbed in by a licensed tradie, even household water needs like the laundry. With so many sizes and shapes now available, there’s a tank to suit every household.

One of the biggest threats facing our native fauna is attacks by pets. If a wild bird or animal is injured by your pet, or if you find a sick, injured or displaced tree-dwelling creature on the ground that could be vulnerable and at risk of attack, it’s important to get expert help immediately. The free International Fund for Animal Welfare (IFAW) wildlife rescue app will connect you to your nearest wildlife rescue organisation, who will advise you what to do.
To reduce the risk to wildlife from our pets, IFAW animal rescue officer Robert Leach says pet owners can help by leashing dogs in designated areas, keeping cats indoors, keeping all pets inside at night, staying alert during dawn and dusk walks, and following rules for national and regional parks.
Many dogs believe the world is ending when there’s a storm. Here are a few ways to help them cope.
● Keep your pets inside if possible, with the windows covered to block out lightning flashes.
● Ensure fences and gates are secure, and that your pet’s microchip details are up to date, as many dogs get so scared they’ll try anything to escape.
● Thunder jackets – tight-fitting vests – work in the same way as swaddling a baby. The gentle, constant pressure can help to relieve anxiety.
● Create a safe zone, such as a crate, enclosure or a quiet room, with bedding that is familiar to them. Playing music or having the television or radio on in that space can also help to distract from the noise outside.
● If your dog’s phobia is really bad, talk to your vet. There are medications you can give them when a storm is approaching to help induce calm for a few hours.

While you protect your skin from the sun’s sizzle, look out for your furry mates, too.

Humans are pretty good at following UV-smart routines. But did you know that your pets can also be in danger from too much sun exposure? According to vet Dr Claire Stevens, cats and dogs with thin or light-coloured fur, especially around their ears, nose, belly and paw pads, are particularly at risk. “Pets that have prolonged sun exposure are at an increased risk of developing certain types of skin cancers,” says Dr Stevens. “In dogs, hemangiosarcomas and squamous cell carcinomas are relatively common. In cats, squamous cell carcinoma is the most frequently seen skin cancer, often affecting areas with less fur such as the ears, nose and eyelids.”
To minimise their exposure, plan your pet’s days around sun-safe hours. During peak sunlight hours, around
10am to 4pm, limit outdoor activities and take your walks earlier or later, when the UV is lower – and the pavement is cooler. Ideally, try to keep your pets inside through the middle of the day. If you can’t, make sure there’s plenty of shelter provided by shade cloth, umbrellas or natural shade sources like trees.
Block harmful rays with sunscreens that are formulated for animals. Dr Leigh Davidson from Your Vet Online says pet-safe sunscreens should be applied to exposed, non-haired skin like the nose, ear tips and belly.
“Avoid human sunscreen unless clearly labelled safe for animals, as some ingredients can be irritating or toxic,” says Dr Davidson. “Cats are especially sensitive, so always spottest a small amount before use.” Where possible, consider physical
Protect your pup from the heat by setting up a clamshell pool and providing a cooling mat or vest. They might also enjoy playing in a sprinkler. Cats will appreciate cool surfaces like tiled floors, and lying on a damp towel or near a frozen water bottle.

barriers. “UV-protective clothing such as sun shirts or rash vests can shield the back, belly and flanks of dogs. Horses benefit from UV-blocking fly rugs and nose flaps. For indoor pets that love sunbathing, applying UV-filtering window film helps reduce exposure while still letting the light in,” advises Dr Davidson.
Just like us, your pets need regular skin checks. Dr Davidson says to watch for scabs, crusty patches or non-healing sores – especially in high-risk areas like the nose, ears and around the eyes in light-skinned animals. “Bull terriers, especially white ones, are the poster pets for sun-related skin disease,” says Dr Davidson. “Their pink noses and bellies are prime targets for sunburn. The best approach is prevention: start sun protection early and stay consistent.”

With a nail gun, you can secure loose trims, skirting boards or decking boards in a fraction of the time it would take with a hammer. It’s also ideal for tidying up outdoor areas where weathering may have loosened boards. Choose one with adjustable depth settings for greater control.

This isn’t just for crafts – a glue gun is also useful for household jobs, such as attaching felt pads to furniture legs to protect floors. Fast-drying and easy to use, it’s the go-to tool for quick fixes.

Use a caulking gun to efficiently apply sealant to joints around sinks, windows or other areas that need a neat, sealed finish. It’s an easy way to tidy up and give your space a polished look.
Give tired outdoor furniture or fences a fast face lift with a paint spray gun. Use one to cover surfaces quickly and evenly, saving you time and giving professionallooking results.

For fastening tasks such as reattaching sagging upholstery or fixing outdoor shade cloths in place, a staple gun is indispensable. Look for a heavy-duty option if you plan to use it outside or on thicker materials. Choose one with adjustable depth settings for greater control.

From stripping paint to loosening old adhesive, a heat gun is a versatile tool. Use it to refresh painted furniture by removing old finishes or to lift stubborn stickers and glue for a cleaner look.
Ideal for making quick, permanent fixes to metal fixtures, a rivet gun enables long-lasting results without replacing items entirely. Use it to repair a loose hinge on a gate or reinforce a wobbly metal chair.
A hose with a spray trigger and mixing tank is a simple festive prep tool. Pour your choice of additive into the tank and quickly wash down patios, clean outdoor furniture or give plants a nutritious drink.
Some advertised services and products are not available at some Bunnings stores, but products can be ordered.
Check out these three quick fixes you can do before the entertaining season starts.
● Patch and paint scuffed walls with a paint spray gun for an even finish in record time.
● Make light work of sealing gaps around the shower or bath with a caulking gun to help keep your bathroom fresh and watertight.
● Repair small decorative items or broken plant pots with a glue gun for instant improvements.

● Rechargeable tools save money on batteries and make moving around the house or garden much easier.
● Clean and store tools properly after each use – a little maintenance keeps them working well for years and avoids costly replacements.
● Invest in quality nails, glue sticks and screws – they last longer and reduce the need for redoing the job. ●

Give your home an architectural edge and tell a story about your style with easycraft panels.
Standard flat walls don’t do much to fire up the imagination but you don’t need to settle for boring. Instead of one-dimensional walls, give your vertical surfaces an architectural upgrade with easycraft Silhouette panels and give your home the upmarket look it deserves.
If flat linings are the wallflowers of surface materials, easycraft Silhouette panels are the belles of the ball. The contoured surfaces play with light to produce organic shapes and shifting shadows, inviting touch and giving any room instant interest.
There’s a broad range of distinctive profiles to choose from, so your home can stand out from the crowd. Channel profile panels offer a contemporary twist on traditional batten walls; Convex panels have an organic, fluted look that softens any space; while Cove panels reverse this look with a pattern of concave curves and subtle ridges that produce a fascinating shadow effect.
Easycraft panels are made with DIYers in mind, right down to the range of size formats. Generous sheets are available for speedier installation and a professional finish (with fewer joins) on larger projects, like full walls or ceilings. For small projects, more compact lining panels are available for easier handling, allowing you to ride the wave of DIY motivation by sourcing the product, loading them into the car and taking them home for installation on the same day.
These high quality and durable decorative panels are designed for ease of use and installation, so even DIY novices can achieve professional results and give their spaces a bespoke revamp. Plus, with a primed and ready-to-paint finish, you can have a completed room in no time. The only tough choice is deciding what colour to paint them!

Gifting a bag of essential products can have a life-changing impact.
Words Bianca Mulheron

Last year, Share the Dignity’s annual ‘It’s in the Bag’ campaign reached a major milestone: its one-millionth bag donation. This marked a significant moment for a charity that has supported countless women across Australia by gifting a bag of essentials to provide joy at a difficult time. One such woman is Jaklyn, a Bunnings Team Member who received a bag seven years ago.
Inside her Share the Dignity bag, along with everyday essentials such as shampoo, conditioner, toothbrush, toothpaste and period products, Jaklyn found a handwritten card:
“You are enough, keep going.” There were also small luxuries we often take for granted: mascara, foundation and lipstick. For women facing a crisis situation like Jaklyn was, these items are more than just products; they’re a reminder of dignity, hope and care.
At the time, Jaklyn had just left a difficult domestic situation. She was undergoing her third round of chemotherapy and fighting a custody battle. Receiving the bag was, in her words, life-changing. “Since getting the bag, my life has become better… I was able to face the court battle with confidence and do the best for me and my children,” she explains. “While it might sound strange, getting
that bag changed my perspective. Instead of feeling down and sad about my situation, I started to believe in myself. I moved interstate and kept thriving from there.”
It was only when Jaklyn unpacked her donated bag that she realised how little she actually had. “When I left my home, I didn’t even pack myself underwear – I had nothing,” she says. “I’d packed my kids’ stuff but nothing for myself – I went through the bag and thought, I don’t have any of this stuff with me.” Jaklyn’s gratitude is clear. “I felt very thankful – I had normal things like period products and
shampoo and I also had make-up and mascara. The make-up really meant a lot to me at the time,” she recalls. “Going through chemo and having no hair, no eyebrows and no eyelashes – the make-up made me feel pretty and normal again.”
Share the Dignity’s support doesn’t end with the bag. Team members regularly check in with recipients and the charity hosts special fundraising high teas – ’DigniTea’ events – where women gather with founder Rochelle Courtenay, her team and guest speakers. Invited to attend last year, Jaklyn jumped at the chance. “I got a small opportunity to thank Rochelle for my bag and tell her how much it meant to me,” she says.
Jaklyn has had a long career at Bunnings, marking up 17 years to date. As an Activities Organiser, she now helps organise and promote Share the Dignity’s ‘It’s in the Bag’ campaign at her store and even designs collection boxes for the donated bags. “I’ve done so many over the years; my first one was a robot and I’ve done a garden one,” she says. And, with personal experience of the impact of the campaign, she’s a passionate advocate: “Share the Dignity is a beautiful, beautiful organisation.”
To take part in this year’s ‘It’s in the Bag’ campaign, drop your new or as-new bag of unopened essentials at Bunnings stores nationwide from November 14 to November 30. Visit sharethedignity.org.au to find out more or to make a donation. ● Give your bag a unique look at ‘Decorate to Donate’ National Adult DIY Workshops, to be held Thursday November 13 from 4pm. Contact the Activities Organiser at your local store to confirm exact workshop time and your attendance.

Prepare for perfect outdoor areas in summer with these musthave tools from Kärcher – they make the job quick and easy.
When spring cleaning, the exterior spaces deserve as much attention as inside the home. After months of winter weather, now is the perfect time to refresh your deck, patio and garden.
A Kärcher Pressure Washer is a gamechanger for cleaning large outdoor surfaces. These powerful machines blast away built-up dirt, grime and even moss from pavers, decks and outdoor furniture, making them look new again. The range includes electric options, perfect for jobs like patios and decks, as well as powerful petrol models for a high-performance clean and greater portability to tackle bigger jobs such as

entire driveways. And with a variety of attachments, you can make quick work of hard-to-reach areas. The FJ6 Foam Jet Nozzle is a great addition – it turns the detergent into a thick foam that lifts dirt and grime, so you don’t have to scrub. It’s ideal for cleaning decks, pavers, outdoor furniture and even the car.
When cleaning outdoor areas, a Kärcher Wet and Dry Vacuum can tackle just about anything. Instead of blowing leaves and debris around the yard or garage, this versatile vac sucks up wet and dry messes like grass clippings, soil and leaves, making clean-up simple. And for streak-free shine on your glass

pool fences and windows, the Kärcher Window Vac is the secret. Just spray, wipe and vac to suck up the dirty water, leaving glass clean and clear. It’s also great to use inside the house on shower screens and mirrors!
Once your outdoor area is clean, it’s time to turn to the garden. The Kärcher ‘BP3’ Pump helps you make the most of your rainwater tank by providing consistent water pressure to your hose or irrigation system, making watering easier and helping lawns, plants and beds flourish.

Put on the festive glitz with easy DIYs to light up your place inside and out.

Decorating your home is half the fun of Christmas, but can easily eat up half of your festive budget, too! And that’s where clever craft comes in. Hack everyday items you can use beyond the season, like our plant trainers covered in fairy lights – grow veg over them the rest of the year! Or upcycle plastic plant pots into shiny gift pails with metallic paint. And make a sweet village of mini houses with timber offcuts, affordable kits and leftover primer and white paint – they’ll become heirloom ornaments.
Decorate a windowsill or mantel with charming timber houses.

ABOVE ● DIY timber village made using: Boyle ‘House’ wood storage boxes, $16.25 each, I/N: 1662738; and Sharpie fine point permanent marker in Black, $2.80/pack of 2, I/N: 0335391. Some advertised services and products are not available at some Bunnings stores, but products can be ordered.

1 On scrap timber offcuts, use a pencil and steel rule to mark straight lines for the base of the house and a triangle roof. Cut the base line using a mitre box and handsaw.

2 Clamp the timber house to your work bench to cut the angled roof lines with a handsaw. Sand the cut edges using 120-grit abrasive paper, then sand all faces of the timber house using 180-grit paper; wipe away dust.
Follow the instructions above to make as many pine offcut houses as you need, varying the heights. We also used an off-the-shelf Boyle kit to make more houses for the village. Assemble the two parts of the plywood house, prime and paint. Allow to dry then slot together.

1 Open the cubby house kit box on a level area and, using the user manual as your guide, check all the parts are there before you start building. Tip: All of the parts and supplied screws are clearly labelled and numbered. Lay out the parts in logical order of assembly.

3 Create a painting plan for your cubby house. Make a sketch on paper of each side of the cubby and label the colours to be used for the different areas, plus any design details, such as the flowers we chose. Mask off the cubby house windows using painter’s tape.

2 Following the manufacturer’s instructions and using the supplied screws, assemble the cubby house. Tip: To help avoid over-driving the screws, set your drill to low speed, generally 1, and if it has options for drilling and screwing, ensure it is set to screw mode.

4 Working on a drop sheet outside, use a mini roller to apply two coats of paint to the cubby interior and larger surfaces, such as the roof, in the main colour (we used white); let dry after each coat. Tip: Paint the window boxes and mailbox before attaching to the cubby house.

5 Mask off where needed for trim paint colours (we used shades of blue), then apply two coats of paint; let dry after each coat. To create our flower designs, use a pencil to trace around a coin or small jar lid to draw the flower eye and petals.
Keep in mind
■ Always follow the manufacturer’s instructions when erecting any structure.
■ When using power tools and painting, always wear the recommended safety gear (such as gloves, mask and eye and ear protection), follow the manufacturer’s instructions and work in a well-ventilated area.
6 Use artist’s brushes to carefully apply two coats of paint to the flower designs; let dry after each coat. Attach the window boxes and mailbox (see tip in step 4). Enlist help to move the cubby house to its final location.
■ Keep all paint and chemicals out of reach of children and pets.
■ Check the weather forecast: if rain is imminent, delay exterior painting, and avoid painting in very hot or very cold conditions. Plan to paint when it’s cool and shady, as paint may dry too quickly in direct sunlight, leaving brush marks and an uneven finish.

Why you need it
Kids love a cubby! It’s their very own space to play act and daydream. And with a kit, you can put a cubby house together in hours with just a drill. But what really makes it special is a custom paint job. So dream up a scheme to delight the kids on Christmas morning, or invite them to help with the project. Have fun! ●
