ith a bit of luck you’re reading this issue in a deckchair or on a sunlounge, finally enjoying the fruits of your pre-Christmas home zhooshing. It’s a great time to reset – and pottering about, tidying and tending to plants between swims is pure January joy. Lots of households are changing address at this time of year, and this little lull before the year gathers pace can be a good time to take stock of ‘stuff’ and cull or recycle anything no longer loved or useful. We’ve consulted the experts to help you pack, clean and move like a pro (page 65) – and don’t forget you can hire everything from a van, trailer and trolley to a skip bin and carpet cleaner at Bunnings. Even if you’re staying put, chipping away at cleaning and organising tasks can be deeply satisfying. Budding green thumbs may like to check out the five gardening basics every rookie should master (page 39). And if you’re planning on dialling up DIY in 2026, our essential tools list (page 70) is a must. Most of us lack storage space and Aussies spend a small fortune on renting storage units. What’s in the pot? Acalypha reptans ‘Stephie’ (also known as dwarf chenille plant) Plant age? Nearly four months old Plant parent: Steph Climate: I live in suburban Melbourne and ‘Stephie’ resides happily in a pot under my porch where there’s plenty of daytime sun. These plants can be kept inside with enough light, but mine thrives outdoors. Where did it come from? Bunnings Dandenong – it immediately caught my eye because we share the same name! Then I noticed its beautiful blooms. A week later, I went back for a second ‘Stephie’ and managed to grab the very last one. Best feature: I love its unique blooms. The soft and fuzzy texture against the backdrop of its smooth leaves definitely makes a statement. Essential care: It tolerates dry climates but loves a deep water. If it’s looking a little shabby, a good drink will quickly perk it up again.

Keep pots and pollinators hydrated, fill hanging baskets with summer edibles and add mood lighting.

Add a shallow birdbath or small water feature to help birds, bees and other beneficial insects stay hydrated during peak heat. Native flowering plants like banksias and callistemons also provide food and shelter.

PAINTING TIPS ● Check the weather forecast – if rain is imminent, delay painting outdoors, and avoid painting in very hot or very cold conditions. Plan to paint when it’s cool and shady, as paint may dry too quickly in direct sunlight, leaving brush marks and an uneven finish. ● Wearing a mask and eye protection, use a paintbrush, spraygun or short-nap roller to apply an oil-based primer, such as Dulux ‘Prepcoat’, to all timber surfaces. Let dry. ● Apply two to three coats of the main exterior and interior paints (we used Dulux ‘Weathershield’ low sheen). Let dry. ● Mask off trims using painter’s tape, then apply two to three coats of trim paint, letting dry after each coat. Tip: Carefully remove tape before the last coat is dry to help avoid peeling paint.

If there’s a shady corner in the yard where your pot plants don’t do well, consider making better use of that area with this quick-assembly, low-maintenance kit shed. Instant gardening and DIY den! Boasting beautiful views across the rollling hills of one of Australia’s most scenic spots, the property is an inspiration for anyone wanting to grow their own food. And many of the ideas in this bountiful garden, from raised beds and a greenhouse to lots of pot plants, can be scaled for use in any size outdoor space.

Meet the family Lisa, a homemaker, and her husband Glen, a semi-retired leather worker, have lived on their property in Victoria’s Yarra Valley for almost 30 years. Also in residence are Audrey, a golden retriever, and ragdoll cats Karl and Coco.

A GARDENING JOURNEY With time and space to experiment, this garden story has taken plenty of twists and turns since Lisa and Glen moved onto their rural plot in 1996. “We have six acres, four for the garden and two for a paddock with a wildlife corridor at the top,” says Lisa. Except for the mature gum trees, the couple has planted everything on the property themselves, and they did a lot of hardscaping DIY. “When we moved in we had four very young children, so not as much time to spend in the garden,” says Lisa. “Over time, Glen built all of the garden beds from rocks brought down from the hill and we concreted the driveway and laid all the pavers ourselves.” An experienced green thumb, Lisa, a member of the Bunnings Workshop online community (@LisasGarden), went in a new direction a few years ago. “I have always loved gardening,

but until lockdown I hadn’t really grown edibles, apart from a few fruit trees. Glen enjoys building things, so we added quite a big area where I can grow lots of produce.” Lisa started out with wine barrels and corrugated raised beds, then got Glen to build her some from scratch. “He used Sienna sleepers from Bunnings, which are safe for vegie gardens, and installed arbours and arches for me to grow fruit and ornamental vines over,” she says. “I also hung old planters on the verandah railing to grow strawberries.” GREENHOUSE GOALS It took two to three years to create the edible landscape and Lisa admits growing food can be a challenge, as the area has wild rabbits and their golden retriever eats everything! “I am still learning about this side of gardening, but my motto is to give it

FOOD FOR ALL SEASONS Lisa grows a variety of edibles, but her favourites are heirloom tomatoes and pumpkins she raises from seed, plus a range of berries. “They produce kilos of fruit which I freeze for later use,” she says. Other crops include capsicum, chilli, eggplant and brassicas. “I love to plant edible flowers among my fruit and veg and also bee food such as alyssum, lavender and nasturtiums. I mainly use the greenhouse now for getting ahead on growing seedlings for spring and summer crops that I plant out into the garden. I also created a narrow garden bed alongside the greenhouse for bulbs and flowers.”

Lisa and Glen customised their installation of an off-the-shelf greenhouse. They sunk posts to reinforce a base frame built from sleepers for extra stability. Merbau boards were laid to create a mini deck at the back, two side beds were filled with soil and a central path with crushed stone. I am always adding new plants!” To take her edible gardening to the next level, Lisa wanted a greenhouse so she could start seeds and also extend the growing season. “We have lots of bee-attracting plants and several birdbaths to keep both the bees and birds happy. My garden is organic and I don’t use sprays for pest control. When you grow organically you will be amazed at all the wildlife you’ll encounter by creating your own little ecosystem – there’s a natural beehive in one of the gum trees, a variety of bird life plus blue-tongue lizards which keep snail numbers down.” Composting is also a significant part of Lisa’s gardening routine. “I love our Maze tumbler – I add kitchen scraps (including tea bags, which must be microplastic-free), coffee grounds, vacuum cleaner

dust and paper, and dried leaves for the carbon component,” she says. REAPING THE REWARDS Now that her patch is established, Lisa spends one to two hours a day in the garden, depending on the season. Spring and summer are a lot busier with planting, mulching, watering, harvesting and pruning, while winter is her time for planning and sowing seeds in the greenhouse. “I love the area around the edible garden,” she says. “It’s a great place to relax or wander through my mini orchard and paddock where we see kangaroos. I love watching the wildlife, big and small.” Lisa’s advice for budding kitchen gardeners is take small steps when starting out. “Concentrate on one area at a time. Glen is very handy, but if we get stuck we’ll look at YouTube or get advice from a

Whether it’s the eradefining equivalent of an 80s haircut, or the bad-taste legacy of a previous owner, if your home is falling short of your aesthetic ideals, there’s plenty you can do about it – without resorting to an expensive renovation. These high-impact home update ideas could give your place a total glow-up for relatively little outlay.

CLADDING WITH CLASS Just like fashion, house claddings (materials, colours and profiles) fall in and out of favour. If your house is saddled with an unfortunate facade, you may be able to bring it into the now by retrofitting with modern cladding. “Retrofitted cladding is a fantastic way to breathe new life into a home that feels outdated or lacks character,” says Rebeka Morgan of BuildHer Collective, who often uses Hardie cladding products on her builds. When deciding if cladding is achievable, consider construction complexity, overall cost, durability and ongoing maintenance. A similar update can be applied inside, adding texture and character to plain walls with products such as Hardie Groove Lining. “In period homes, like Hamptons or countrystyle properties, I often use a dado rail or line to create a feature that’s true to the time and place of the house,” says Rebeka. “For modern homes, floor-to-ceiling applications work best, especially when aiming for a seamless flow from inside to outside.” Acoustic panels are another on-trend interior option, with their squishy adhesive foam lending softness. PEEKABOO SCREENS The magic of a transformed home can often come down to the art of misdirection — strategically disguising or distracting from problem areas. Using decorative screens in an outdoor space is an affordable and effective example of this method. Timber battens fixed to a frame can help hide practical features — like an aircon unit or rubbish bins — while a veil of trellis or bamboo is the perfect cover-up for an ugly fence. Metal screens with laser-cut designs are another elegant way to protect your privacy while dividing up the yard. This ‘disguise and distract’ theory applies indoors as well. A simple slatted timber panel can do anything from hiding that mess-catching space under the stairs to breaking up an open-plan living room. BORDER EFFECTS Decorative mouldings are the reason many period homes hold their charm while modern builds can look a bit stark. Bold trims and skirting boards combine a sense of oldworld craftsmanship with a look that’s very now. Bunnings trend and design manager Jane Wright says cornicing trends are shifting from subtle trims to bolder effects. “Layered, sculpted and oversized profiles frame 34 bunnings.com.au

rooms for added character,” she says. Personal expression is key but, as a guide, take inspiration from your home’s architecture and time period. For a modern home, consider a sculpted style, streamlined rather than ornate. With size, think large but proportionate – a handy rule of thumb is to make skirting boards seven per cent of your ceiling height. Decorative trims can be taken to the walls, too. Use narrow picture moulding to create wainscoting and give plain walls some old-fashioned grandeur. Bungalow-style battens capped with a plate rail are a less ornate but equally charming alternative, offering space for a secondary colour or pattern on the upper wall. “Exterior decorative trims are trending, too,” says Jane. “The momentum indoors is carrying to facades, with demand rising for detail that adds depth, shadow and ‘finished’ edges.” She suggests adding exterior fretwork and mouldings for a touch of texture and charm.

COLOURING IN Paint forever offers the best ratio of cost to wow — it’s the failsafe antidote to a stale interior or scruffy facade. To transform your exterior, start with a neutral base, then use accent colours to highlight architectural features – for example, a warm charcoal like Dulux Western Myall on window frames, porch rails and fretwork. Related to this is colour capping, which layers three tones of one hue across walls, cornices (or above the plate or picture rail) and ceilings. “Capping is a fresh interior trend that plays with proportion, mood and visual rhythm,” says Jane. “It creates a subtle ombré effect that visually elevates ceilings, adds depth and integrates the ‘fifth wall’.” @bunnings

garden can range from pots on a balcony to a big backyard or cosy courtyard, but whether large or small, the same foundations of plant care apply. So if you’re planning on getting into the garden for the new year or want to brush up your existing skills and patch, here are some of the things you need to know.

FEEDING All plants need to be fed, and the frequency of feeding will vary according to the products and methods you use. All have their merits and uses and, in fact, combining a couple of different products can yield the best results. Liquid fertilisers Generally mixed in a watering can or garden sprayer and applied to soil or potting mix and foliage. They’re ideal for a quick fix, however the nutritional benefits are short-lived so weekly reapplication may be needed. Slow-release fertilisers Useful for consistent feeding over a period of time, but how long they last can vary depending on weather conditions – the granules can be more rapidly broken down during rainy periods. They generally require reapplication every few weeks. Controlled-release fertilisers These comprise tiny pellets, called prills, encapsulating micro-doses of fertiliser. They are designed to release nutrients when the temperature hits the right point and moisture is available. This means plants are fed only in their active growing phase, so there’s little or no wastage or run-off of nutrients. Tip: When handling any fertilisers, always follow the safety advice on the packaging and wear appropriate protective gear. As a minimum, it’s good practice to always wear tough gardening gloves that offer protection and adequate grip, and a mask. SOIL HEALTH What is ‘feeding’ the soil? For a full-range of nutrients to be available to your plants, you need your soil or potting mix to be biologically active and healthy. Simply put, this is because the soil microorganisms convert raw nutrients from fertiliser to forms that can be better absorbed by plant roots. Adding compost, manure, organically derived fertilisers and biologically fortified fertilisers are ways to feed your soil.

TRIMMING There are two main considerations when giving your plants a haircut; think of them as the two Ts – tools and timing. Tools To make the job easier and to avoid damaging your plants, it’s important to use the right tools. For lighter tasks like cutting flowers for a vase, deadheading or tip-pruning of small, wayward shoots, use scissor-like floral snips. For maintenance pruning of thicker shoots and branches or removal of unwanted wood, you’ll need bypass pruners or secateurs. For the best cut, always keep the blade side towards the plant trunk or stem. To keep shrubs of all sizes in shape and to trim hedges or topiary, use hedge shears. These look like a giant pair of scissors and perform in the same way. For best results, choose a good-quality pair with features such as non-slip ergonomic grips, a blade tensioner and sharp, treated blades. If you have a lot of trimming and pruning to do or have any sort of restrictions with hand movement, consider investing in battery-powered

trimming tools. Remember when using any power tools to always wear the recommended safety gear, such as gloves, mask, and eye and ear protection. Timing When to trim? That’s simple – let your plants tell you. There may be the odd occasion where you are pruning off single unwanted shoots or branches, but most of the time it’s to keep your plants neat and tidy or to remove spent flowers. With any flowering plant, it’s important that you trim as soon as possible after flowering finishes. There are two reasons for this: firstly it helps to trigger the plant into developing new flower buds or more foliage to improve bushiness, and secondly, it avoids the risk of cutting off any developing flower buds later in the season.

TRIMMING TIPS ● Always keep tools sharp and

clean, and make sure to clean and dry your cutting tools before you put them away. ● When using hedge shears, don’t go in hard on the first cut. Take a little, then step back and look, and take some more if required. Remember, you can always cut more off but you can’t put it back on! ● Use the right cutting tool for the job and never force a tool to make a cut. ● Save any softer material you prune off for adding to the compost or, if it’s suitable, for propagating as cuttings. ● When using any cutting tools and handling pruning offcuts, always wear hand and eye protection. PROPAGATING Creating new plants from old is a fabulous way to save money, grow your garden and develop your skills. The advantage of growing from cuttings is that you are basically creating a ‘clone’ – the new plant will have the same characteristics, such as flower colour, as the original. Cutting timing and techniques vary according to plant type. Horticulturist Angie Thomas from Yates says early summer is a good time to take cuttings of camellias, azaleas, buxus and perennials like daisies and salvia when you can gather semi-hardwood cuttings. “These are spring shoots that have started maturing and they strike well,” she says.

Only use clean, sharp tools and start your cuttings in a propagating mix rather than a regular potting mix. Gen Bailey from Scotts explains that propagating mix has a fine and consistent particle size to ease root development while still offering good drainage, moisture-holding capacity and air movement. You can improve your success rate by using specialised cutting gels or powder, and consider investing in a heated propagation tray. Cuttings are often started on the windowsill in a glass of water. This can work for some plants, but be aware that many don’t survive transplanting into potting mix or soil. This is mainly because the roots that develop are quite soft and can’t cope with the pressure of soil or potting mix.

NO-DIG GARDENS You’ve likely heard of this magical idea, a garden without digging! Sometimes referred to as ‘lasagne gardens’, they’re comprised of alternating layers of ‘green’ nitrogen materials, and ‘brown’ carbon materials. Natural composting processes convert these into rich soil. Green materials include fresh green leaves, lawn clippings, manure, compost, vegetable scraps, teabags, tea-leaves and coffee grounds. Brown materials include straw, lucerne mulch, cardboard, newspaper, dry leaves and dry lawn clippings. To make a no-dig bed, first decide on a spot and aerate the soil using a garden fork. If it’s in an area with grass or weeds, smother them with cardboard or newspaper (8-10 sheets thick) and soak this thoroughly with a seaweed or seaweed and molasses solution. For the first layer, add a generous amount of vegie scraps and compost with blood and bone fertiliser or pelletised manure mixed through. Next, add a layer of straw, dry leaves or dry grass clippings. Repeat alternating layers of green and brown until it’s about 50cm thick – this will break down to around 20-30cm. Try to make each layer different in composition to help with biological diversity. The last layer should be made up of compost or well-composted manure, about 10cm thick, topped with staw or lucerne mulch. By using well-composted materials for the last green layer you should be able to plant seedlings straightaway. At the end of the season, simply add a few more layers and start again.

COMPOSTING This is a wonderfully easy, sustainable and sensible thing to do in the garden. Basically, composting involves using material from your home and garden that’s often considered waste to create a naturally rich soil improver. There are three main ways to do home composting. Compost bin A cylindrical or square plastic bin-like structure with a lid on top, often with a door at the bottom. The base is open and sits on the soil. Compost tumbler A drum on a supporting frame which can be rotated to turn and mix the compost. Open bay system The more traditional open-base ‘heap’, which often has two or three bays of material at different stages of processing. Rochelle Sherrard-Smith, Bunnings buyer for garden hand tools, suggests that a tumbler is the best choice for a first-time composter. “They are quick and easy to set up, easy to access and keep clean and, as you only have to turn the drum, lower maintenance than regular forking,” says Rochelle. In many ways a compost system is similar to a no-dig garden – that is, you aim to have a 50:50 balance of ‘green’ and ‘brown’ material. The major difference with a compost system is that you blend them together as the heap develops. ●

HOW TO START COMPOSTING ● Select a flat spot. Ideally it should be in part sun, avoiding afternoon sun, and not in a location that is subject to run-off or standing water during rainy periods. ● For on-ground systems, aerate the soil with a garden fork. ● For an open-base bin, place galvanised wire mesh, with holes of around 1cm, underneath to keep rats and mice out. ● Start with a brown layer of small twigs, even woodchips, for aeration and to ensure good drainage. ● Add blends of green and brown material and keep turning as you do so – a compost corkscrew works well for an open-base bin, while a fork is ideal for an open-bay system.

● Once your bin or heap is full, allow the contents to sit for a month or two, turning regularly but without adding any new material, to finish the composting process. ● Don’t let the system dry out. If it gets too wet, add dry ‘brown’ material and blend through. ● Good preparation is the key to getting started, advises Angie Thomas. “Having a good supply of green and brown materials ready to go will help create a great compost pile or fill a tumbler quickly,” she says. Angie also suggests adding a few handfuls of garden soil to your new system to kickstart the composting process, as this will introduce lots of beneficial microorganisms.

KEEPING IT FRESH Many deck cleaning products are designed to prep your wood for a new coat or stain and not recommended for everyday use. If your deck attracts a lot of dirt or dust, sweep it regularly to reduce build-up and use a good squeegee to dispense pools of mucky rainwater before they dry to mud. Coating your deck annually should keep it in good nick, but Josie suggests harsher weather conditions may shorten this time. “If your timber is showing signs of damage, such as a loss of gloss or sheen, colour fading, cracking, splitting or too much water absorption, then it’s time to recoat,” she says. To keep your deck looking sharp in-between protective coats, or extra schmick for a special occasion, try a fast-drying maintenance coat like the Cabot’s EasyDeck system, which is safe to apply over existing water-based coatings as often as every 30 days.

BACK TO LIFE Check for damaged or rotting timber and replace if necessary. Also look for protruding nails – a hazard for bare feet and the enemy of sanders. These can be punched back in or swapped with decking screws, which securely grip the timber without popping up. Give the planks a good scrub with a specialist cleaning product before hosing off. Sanding is not usually necessary unless there’s significant weathering or an old, flaking coating. If you do sand, use sandpaper no finer than 80 grit, so the fibres are open enough to absorb their new coating. If you’re happy with the natural hue of the timber, nourish and enhance it with a decking oil. To change the look, opt for a stain. Josie Jemmeson from Cabot’s suggests taking your home’s existing palette into consideration when choosing a colour. “Light stains can create a more open and airy feeling, while darker colours create a cosier vibe,” she says. “Select a stain that complements your home’s style and exterior.”

PAVERS & TILES Outdoor tiles and pavers may take a beating, but they’re tough as anything and respond beautifully to a little care. BACK TO LIFE To see what you’re working with, get beneath the grime — a good pressure wash will reveal the true state of your pavers. If they’re very grubby, scrub with a stiff brush and a mild detergent or specialised outdoor cleaner. Tackle serious stains from rust or mineral deposits with a powerful solution such as CLR Calcium Limescale & Rust Remover. Repairing damaged tiles and pavers will require a little more work, but structural landscaper Anthony Antoun of Mr & Ms Group (mrandmsgroup. com.au) says it can be done. “Small chips and cracks can often be fixed with a stone or tile repair kit – Bunnings has some great options in colours that blend really well,” he says. “For bigger cracks, it’s usually best to replace the damaged piece so water doesn’t get underneath and cause lifting or more damage down the track.” For this reason, always hang onto any spare tiles or pavers when you first install them! Sagging pavers are a common problem, often occurring when the base material has been inadequately compacted or when there’s water damage and erosion over time. To fix this, pry up the pavers in the sunken area and clean them off. Add new paving sand and compact it level before replacing the pavers. KEEPING IT FRESH To maintain tiles and pavers, sweep them regularly, scrubbing any stains or slimy build-up that could become a slip hazard. “A quick scrub with a stiff outdoor brush and 30 Seconds Outdoor Cleaner usually brings surfaces back to life,” says Anthony. To protect against stains and fading, he suggests sealing them with a quality paver sealer every couple of years. Weeds between pavers can be another recurring inconvenience. “Topping up joints with paving sand or grout can help prevent movement and deter weed growth,” he says.

Non-structural cracks in a concrete slab are common, but can often be fixed. “Hairline cracks can be patched using a flexible concrete repair compound or epoxy filler,” says Anthony Antoun. “The key is to clean the area first so the product sticks properly – something like Sika Concrete Fix or Dulux Avista Concrete Crack Repair works well. Make sure the product is designed to expand and contract with temperature changes so it won’t split again.” If you’re still not loving the look of your concrete, consider changing it with paint. White Knight Ultra Pave Quick Dry is designed for previously painted or bare, etched concrete and can also transform pavers (with the correct prep – follow guidelines

closely). Brianna Hurst from White Knight suggests taking sunlight into consideration before choosing a colour. “Lighter tones can be glary in full sun,” she explains. “Paint a few test swatches and observe them at different times of day.” She also recommends looking at other elements of the space. “Think how the colour will work with your home’s fences, roofing, trims and landscaping.” For safety in wet or high-traffic areas, mix a product designed to improve slip resistance, such as White Knight Ultra Pave Topcoat Grip Additive, into your paint. KEEPING IT FRESH Continue regular sweeping, scrubbing and pressurewashing to stop stains from building up. Use pot feet or stands to raise potted plants off the concrete and stop mildew forming, address rusty outdoor furniture before it leaves marks, and watch out for tannin stains from unweathered timber furniture. ●

Trellis Timber trellis needs a gentle touch. Address grime with a soft-bristled brush and mild detergent. If you have good access (that is, if there isn’t a rose rambling over it), consider nourishing it with a timber oil or stain.

Stones and gravel Tidy up the edges of pebbled areas, pulling up any weeds – a herbicide spray might be useful. Bald patches often form on high-traffic areas; rake the gravel to even it out and, if necessary, top up with fresh stones.

Snakes can present a danger in summer, but there are measures you can take to protect your family and pets. The RSPCA says snakes like potential food and water sources and quiet places to hide. To make your place less attractive to them, keep grass cut short and don’t leave piles of timber or corrugated iron lying around. To keep small animals safe, fence outdoor pet enclosures with snake-proof mesh. When out walking, keep dogs on a lead and avoid going into long grass. If you find a snake in your backyard, leave it alone and ensure pets and children are inside. It will probably move on soon but, if it doesn’t, call a snake catcher. Never harm a snake as they are protected as native species and most bites occur when trying to handle them.

Some are instinctively more inquisitive, energetic, shy or demanding of attention,” he says. “Even people who don’t intend to become attached to their chooks usually end up naming at least a few!” They are also one of the most sustainable pets you can have, reducing the environmental impact of waste by eating food scraps and creating a natural source of fertiliser for your garden. Plus you get your own supply of fresh eggs. Guinea fowl, on the other hand, are less inclined to be your friend, but they do keep snakes and rats away! GARDENING GOATS If you’re on an acreage, pygmy goats are clever little creatures that can be taught tricks and skills, says Carolyn

Hamilton from the National Pygmy Goat Association of Australia. “They have a naturally docile temperament and the more attention you give them, the more they give back,” she says. “They are under 45cm tall and come in a range of unbelievable colours.” A small flock of pygmy goats will also help keep the grass down. EWE LEGEND Another way to avoid mowing is to have sheep. Sheep breeder Sue Curliss of Sugar Gum Farm in Victoria says they make great pets and the smaller breeds, such as the Babydoll, are easy to handle. “They are inquisitive, intelligent animals who love following you around,” she says. “They can also be halter trained and taken for walks.” In return for your care and a couple of acres, you receive lawnmowing, fertiliser already in pellet form and wool you can either spin or use as mulch. And the straw from their shelter also provides great mulch for garden beds.

ost of us have a moving-day horror story – lost keys, boxes falling to pieces or a sofa that won’t fit through the front door. But with a bit of planning, the right gear and some expert know-how, you can pack, clean and move like a pro – and start enjoying your new home faster.

have lots to get rid of, book a council clean-up in advance – many fill up weeks ahead – or hire a skip to clear as you go and avoid a late rush. PACK WISELY Once you’ve decluttered, it’s time to get strategic. “Bubble or paper wrap, moving boxes, bags and labels, packing tape and dispenser, moving inserts and dividers, and mattress and furniture covers are must-haves,” says Jess. “They help protect belongings and make unpacking easier.” Label each box with its destination and contents, and avoid over-stuffing. “Don’t make boxes so heavy you can’t move them yourself,” says Sarah. “Group like items together and mark boxes you’ll need immediate access to, such as kitchen essentials, power cords and medication.”

When choosing boxes, one size does not fit all. “Use heavy-duty boxes for storage, large, light-duty boxes for linen and larger items, and smaller heavy-duty cartons for books and fragile pieces,” says Sarah. She also recommends butcher’s paper for wrapping delicate items like glassware and heirlooms. “The key is to use plenty and fill gaps with scrunched paper so nothing moves.” If you’re looking to save on packaging, repurpose what you already have – towels, blankets and sheets make great padding for fragile items and help reduce waste. GEAR UP If you’re organising the move yourself, have the right tools on hand. A dolly, pallet shrink wrap, moving blankets, packaging straps and a hand trolley

START EARLY The secret to a smooth move? Time – and lots of it. Jess Borschmann, buyer for transport and moving at Bunnings, warns that not being prepared for the move, not packing items properly and leaving things until the last minute can cause problems. ”Planning in advance, using checklists and our moving calculator (see page 68), packing room by room and having the right gear to move – for example, a moving trolley, dolly, furniture blankets and moving boxes – can make all the difference,” she says. Professional home organiser Sarah Le Quesne from Sort by Sarah advises starting four to six weeks ahead. “Walk through your home, room by room, and make a rough inventory,” she says. “Don’t forget storage spaces like understairs cupboards and attics.” Decluttering before you pack is wise. “When moving, every item in your home has a hard cost attached to it – you’re paying to pack, move and unpack it,” says Sarah. “Once you decide an item no longer belongs in your home, make sure it leaves the same day.” Begin with a single drawer or cupboard, suggests professional organiser Jo Carmichael from All Sorted Out. “Put the contents on a flat surface and remove what you haven’t used in a year. If it’s in good condition, donate it,” she says. “Otherwise, bin it and celebrate the clear-out!” If you

On moving day, have an ‘essentials kit’ ready to pack last and unpack first. Include the kettle, a few cups, snacks, medications, cleaning cloths and any paperwork or keys. When kids or pets are involved, plan ahead. “We prioritise setting up kids’ bedrooms first so they feel settled straightaway,” says Sarah. “And pets hate the sound of tape guns – give them a quiet space away from the chaos or ask a neighbour or friend to mind them.”

● THE PROJECT

STEP 1: BUILD

1 Cut timber frame pieces using a mitre saw. Butt the sides against the ends, predrill two holes at each join; secure with 75mm screws. Predrill studs to secure side noggins, one screw each join; predrill and secure through the sides. Secure the centre noggins.

STEP 4: SEAL

4 Mask off frame. Position reinforcing sleeves around shower and mixer, and bond breaker tape along joints and edges; bed in with waterproofing membrane using a brush. Apply two coats of membrane all over, in opposite directions; let dry after each coat.

STEP 7: GROUT

7 Remove spacers with pliers. Mix grout and water in a clean bucket; apply using a pointed trowel in a diagonal motion. Cover two rows at a time, pushing grout into gaps and trim, wiping away excess with a clean sponge. Wipe off grout haze. Leave to cure.

STEP 2: INSTALL

2 Locate house wall studs to mark out the frame at least 150mm from the ground. Enlist help to lift into position using clamps. Predrill and secure a 150mm screw into a top corner. Check for level; secure frame with screws into wall studs. Have the plumber rough in.

STEP 5: TRIM

5 Mix adhesive and water, apply with a notched trowel to frame base and lay tiles, cutting last one to fit; use a clamped offcut as support. Use a hacksaw to mitre the trim for the top, base and sides, adding 20mm tile allowance. Square cut side trim.

STEP 8: PLUMB

8 Wipe tiles with a damp cloth. Apply two coats of sealer with a mini roller without letting first coat dry completely. Have the shower plumbed in. Tape off splashback, apply silicone to wall and tile gap, spritz with water and wipe excess with a finger.

Keep in mind ■ Your local council may require outdoor showers to be connected to the sewer and protected by a roof structure. Check with your local authority and discuss drainage options with your plumber. Any plumbing work must be carried out by a licensed tradie. ■ Check with the manufacturers that all items you choose, including the shower set, are suitable for outdoor use. ■ When using power tools, always protect ears and eyes with ear muffs and safety glasses (gloves and mask are also recommended), follow the manufacturer’s instructions and work in a well-ventilated area.

STEP 3: CLAD

3 Cut the FC sheet using a fibro cutter and straightedge. Apply adhesive to clad frame sides and ends; clamp to secure with nails. Secure left panel. Mark up centre and right panels to drill shower and mixer holes with 25mm and 44mm holesaws; secure.

STEP 6: TILE

6 Bed in base and side trim with adhesive, taping corners to hold. Tile up the sides and front using 3mm spacers; tile top, cutting last one to fit. Make cuts in tiles for shower and mixer using diamond holesaws. Bed in top trim, lay the last row. Leave to cure.

PAVED BASE

To create a self-draining base, set out a stringline for four 610mm x 406mm travertine pavers. Clear the area and use a tamper to compress two 20kg bags of road base. In a wheelbarrow, mix two 20kg bags of paver screed and apply over the area, spreading with a level to slope away from the house. Position the pavers and tap into position with a rubber mallet. Apply grout and sealer using the same techniques as the shower tiles. To finish, spread four 15kg bags of decorative stones around the pavers.
