Compassion Leaders

Decatur Education Foundation

SOME NEEDS AREN’T VISIBLE from the classroom door. They’re tucked behind the bright smiles of students facing challenges far bigger than homework—food insecurity, housing instability, or the simple need for clean clothes and shoes.

For more than two decades, the Decatur Education Foundation (DEF) has worked to meet those needs head-on. Founded in 2002 by a group of Decatur residents who saw disparities among students, the Foundation was built on four pillars: removing obstacles to learning, empowering opportunities, supporting educators and strengthening community initiatives. “Without these basic needs being met, students are not available to learn,” says Meagan Berardi, Executive Director.

From its partnerships with City Schools of Decatur and the Decatur Housing Authority to its community-wide collaborations, DEF continues to bridge gaps with compassion and creativity. Programs like “Lighten the Load” help counselors provide essentials such as food, clothing, and medical support, while “Teacher Innovation Grants” fund ideas that spark curiosity and connection.

Each year, DEF awards scholarships to Decatur High School students who demonstrate leadership, kindness, and service to their community. The Foundation also continues to expand access to mental health resources and create inclusive experiences—like summer camps for special education students—so that every child has the opportunity to learn, grow and belong.

“The ways we address these systemic issues change as the needs change,” Berardi says. “But our mission remains the same—to build an inclusive community where every student can learn, grow and thrive.”

In Decatur, that mission isn’t just a promise. It’s a partnership—one that turns empathy into action every single day.

SOME STORIES BEGIN WITH TRAGEDY but grow into movements of hope. For nearly four decades, the Women’s Resource Center to End Domestic Violence has been that movement—a quiet, steadfast force within the Decatur community. What started in response to the heartbreaking death of Gwendolyn Turnbough at the hands of her estranged husband has evolved into a lifeline for thousands of survivors seeking safety, healing and dignity. “We honor her legacy by ensuring no survivor has to face violence alone,” says Jean Douglas, CEO.

Today, that mission has deepened with the Center’s merger with Day League, uniting domestic violence and sexual assault services under one roof. Together, their teams are creating a seamless network of care that meets survivors with compassion in courtrooms, hospitals and safe houses across DeKalb County. “It’s not just about efficiency—

Women’s Resource Center to End Domestic Violence

it’s about wholeness,” says Amber Harris, Chief Development Officer.

Their work isn’t fueled by headlines, but by small, powerful acts—a hotline answered in the middle of the night, a survivor finding courage in a counseling session, a child discovering that love should never hurt.

At its core, the Women’s Resource Center embodies what Decatur does best: showing up for one another. “This community holds us accountable,” Harris says. “It reminds us that ending violence isn’t just our job—it’s everyone’s responsibility.”

Hope, they remind us, is already here—in every survivor who rebuilds, every advocate who listens, and every neighbor who refuses to look away.

Amplify My Community

EVERY SPRING, as guitars tune and lights rise over Decatur Square, something larger than music fills the air. It’s a connection that hums through the crowd as neighbors, families and friends come together for the Amplify Decatur Music Festival, which is organized by the nonprofit Amplify My Community.

For co-board chairs Christine Mahin, Drew Robinson, and Mike Killeen, that feeling is the point. “Music is an incredibly powerful medium,” they say. “It brings together people of different backgrounds and belief systems. It’s unbiased in how it touches and influences people—and that in itself can create love and community.”

What began as a local concert has evolved into a citywide tradition grounded in giving back. One hundred percent volunteer-run, Amplify channels every dollar of its net proceeds to local nonprofits like Decatur Cooperative Ministry and the Decatur Education Foundation—two organizations devoted to fighting poverty and supporting

families. “By helping them, we help our neighbors,” the co-chairs say.

In addition to the Amplify Decatur Music Festival, it holds multiple “Vs.” tribute shows at Eddie’s Attic each year and has hosted a stage at Porchfest the last two years. Amplify also has produced dozens of shows in Athens, Asheville, Charlottesville, Virginia and Nashville, Tennessee, featuring local bands and raising money for local charities.

Amplify’s heart beats beyond the stage. From local partnerships to volunteer crews that never say no, it’s a living example of what generosity looks like when shared purpose meets sound. The most recent festival spotlighted local musicians, a nod to Decatur’s creative roots and its belief that art should reflect the people who make it possible.

At its core, Amplify is a reminder that while division may dominate headlines, harmony still wins the day. “There’s more love than hate in the world,” the team says. “Music helps us remember that—and brings us together to prove it.”

No. 246

Chase Green, Executive Chef

EXECUTIVE CHEF CHASE GREEN

moves through the open kitchen at No. 246 with a mix of calm and precision, fully aware that every move is on display. The setup isn’t just for show— it’s a statement about connection. “Our guests greatly influence not only our menu but how we execute a service. Decatur’s diversity demands that we stay intuitive, adaptable and creative.”

Each dish is a conversation between the kitchen and the dining room, where a four-seat chef’s counter invites diners into the rhythm of the work. For Green, the most essential ingredient isn’t found on any supplier list—it’s people. He insists that quality matters. Whether it’s butter from out of state, onions from a small local farm or a linecaught fish flown in overnight, every ingredient is chosen with care and respect. “You must start with intuitive cooks who have the desire to succeed. They’re the ones putting the magic into each dish.”

Over time, the menu has built its own following. Guests come for favorites that have become part of the restaurant’s story, yet Green keeps things evolving with seasonal shifts. “Let nature decide for you. The best fish is the one you caught that day.”

In the end, it’s about recognition—the small nods between chef and guest, the familiarity of shared moments. In a city as vibrant as Decatur, that kind of connection is what keeps the kitchen’s fire burning.

The Ramspeck

Executive Chef Chris Morrison

EXECUTIVE CHEF CHRIS MORRISON believes that cooking is an act of energy as much as artistry. Every plate at The Ramspeck carries intention, every flavor a reflection of focus and flow. That belief runs through his kitchen like a current—anchored in freshness, sustainability and gratitude. Ingredients are sourced locally, but what truly elevates them is the mindfulness behind every movement, from prep to plating. “The energy you put into your work enhances creativity and the overall experience.”

Morrison’s philosophy begins with commitment—staying humble, competitive and deeply grateful for the opportunity to serve. It’s a rhythm he calls “cultivating high vibration,” a reminder that great food starts long before it hits the pan.

When creating a new dish, he relies on his own framework—the five W’s: What’s in season? What are others not doing? What’s the theme or vibe? What’s my vibration at the time? And what brings excitement, balance and innovation? It’s equal parts intuition and intention, ensuring that every menu tells a story that evolves with the chef himself.

For Morrison, success is measured in connection. That kind of authenticity thrives in Decatur, a place where diversity fuels creativity and where community is more than a concept—it’s the secret ingredient that keeps his kitchen alive. “We create unforgettable moments through great food, exceptional service and transparency.”

Iberian Pig Decatur

FOR EXECUTIVE CHEF JOHN

CASTELLUCCI, the heartbeat of Iberian Pig runs deeper than the kitchen line—it’s rooted in community. Being a part of Decatur means he’s not just cooking for the neighborhood, he’s serving it. That spirit shows up in the everyday details—the way his team knows guests by name, remembers their favorite wine or notices when they’re celebrating something special. It’s about creating genuine connections. People can feel when you care.”

Over the years, every small gesture has turned first-time diners into regulars and regulars into friends. That consistency, built on warmth and authenticity, has become part of the restaurant’s identity. At Iberian Pig, great food starts with a great product—Spanish jamón or local squash, handled with intention and respect. “Once you’ve sourced something beautiful, the job is to help it thrive. The menu, built around the rhythm of tapas dining, celebrates contrast—textures, temperatures and tastes designed to spark conversation as the night unfolds.

Behind every dish is a process that blends patience and collaboration. Ideas start months in advance, tested as specials, refined through tastings and polished into a lineup that balances innovation with what Castellucci calls “craveability”—the kind of dish that lingers in your mind days later.

That philosophy extends to the way he views Decatur itself. “People here are proud of where they live. They support their local restaurants first. It’s a small city with a big appetite—and we’re lucky to be part of that.”

Brick Store Pub

LONG BEFORE CRAFT BEER became a movement, three friends from Athens had an idea that felt radical in its simplicity: a pub without noise. No TVs. No neon. No distractions. Just conversation, community and pints poured with care.

When Dave Blanchard and his partners Mike Gallagher and Tom Moore opened Brick Store Pub on Decatur Square in 1997, they weren’t just starting a business—they were building a place that felt like home. Inspired by Athens’ iconic Globe, their vision took root in a city that was just beginning to find its own rhythm. “We wanted to create a pub where beer was celebrated and people connected,” Blanchard says.

Over the years, Brick Store has helped shape Decatur’s beer culture and its sense of community.

From curating world-class European ales to championing local craft brewers, the team’s commitment has remained the same—to serve beer with reverence and people with heart. “Beer is the perfect beverage to share with friends and family,” Blanchard says. “It’s about belonging.”

Nearly three decades later, the pub still hums with that same warmth. Renovations like the Cask Ale Bar, Community Beer Garden and The Ramspeck event space have renewed its purpose. But the secret ingredient hasn’t changed—the people. “The ‘public house’ matters now more than ever,” Blanchard says. “We’ve been lucky to earn Decatur’s trust. Our staff and community keep making the Brick Store better every day.”

In Decatur, that’s what belonging tastes like.

Eddie’s Attic

THERE’S A CERTAIN magic that happens when the lights dim at Eddie’s Attic. The chatter fades. The guitars tune. Suddenly, the room belongs to the music. Since opening its doors in 1991, the listening room in the heart of Decatur has become a kind of temple for songwriters—a place where their stories are told one chord at a time.

Ask anyone who’s played here—from music stalwarts like John Mayer, the Indigo Girls, Sugarland’s Jennifer Nettles and Kristian Bush, and Brandi Carlile—and they’ll tell you: It’s not just the music filtering through Eddie’s—it’s the silence. That rare reverence for the craft.

More than a venue, Eddie’s Attic is a launchpad and a gathering space—a bridge between emerging voices and a community that still believes in live music’s power to connect. Over three decades, its stage has shaped careers, sparked friendships and inspired countless nights where strangers left humming the same tune.

“Today’s musician is the modern troubadour, and the Attic is where they can share their souls,” says co-owner Dave Mattingly. “The Attic is not only a music venue; it’s a hospital. It’s a place that helps people find some peace by sending the music straight to their hearts. It’s cathartic.”

From its friendly patio to its intimate upstairs stage, Eddie’s remains a reflection of Decatur itself—creative, grounded and endlessly welcoming. Here, every song is a story waiting to be heard, and every night proves that in a noisy world, the quietest rooms often hold the loudest hearts.

(R)Evolution Med Spa

FOR MIKE KELLEHER, founder of (R)Evolution Med Spa, the journey into entrepreneurship wasn’t scripted—it was earned through years of practicing medicine, asking questions and refusing to accept shortcuts. A former combat medic turned Emory-trained physician assistant, Kelleher saw a gap in the aesthetics world: too many promises, too little science. His answer was to bring precision, evidence and care together under one roof.

At (R)Evolution, aging isn’t something to fight—it’s something to honor. Mike calls it “positive aging” — a philosophy rooted in authenticity and confidence rather than the chase for youth. “Aesthetic medicine is still medicine. Every treatment is grounded in research and guided by a patient’s individuality.”

Since opening in 2021, his Decatur practice has become a trusted space for people seeking natural results and honest counsel. Four years and four “Best Med Spa” awards later, his instinct proved right. “Decatur was always the place. I knew its people valued community and authenticity.”

With cutting-edge tools like EndoLift and Georgia’s only LightScan Fractional Laser, Kelleher and his team continue to raise the bar for safe, effective and natural aesthetic care. But beyond the technology, it’s the trust that matters most. “We treat every patient like family. We’re in this together.”

Through his science-driven and heart-led approach, Kelleher is helping Decatur redefine what it means to age—beautifully, confidently, and unapologetically.

Color Wheel Studio

STEP INTO COLOR WHEEL STUDIO on the first Saturday or Sunday of the month and you might find a family leaning over watercolor trays, a group of friends experimenting with collage or a solo visitor quietly shaping clay while sipping tea. Conversations blend with the scratch of pencils—a soundtrack to Decatur’s most colorful new experiment, Art à la Carte.

For Director Marlis Cornett, the idea was simple: Make creativity as approachable as coffee. “We wanted a low-stakes, cafe-like experience. A place where anyone could dabble in art without pressure—just play, connect and see what happens.”

That sense of ease is what defines Color Wheel. Known for its youth programs and After School Studio, the community art space has evolved to serve teens and adults, too, embracing the city’s creative curiosity. “We’re responsive to what people ask for,” Cornett says. “Decatur values art—it’s baked into our festivals, our schools, our culture. Art à la Carte just fills in the spaces between.”

Each menu item offers a creative twist—metal embossing, ceramics or even a “Combo Platter” of multimedia materials. But beyond the art itself, Cornett hopes people take home something deeper: presence. “In a world of short attention spans and constant scrolling, art teaches us to slow down, experiment, and find joy in making something.”

At Color Wheel Studio, creativity isn’t just an activity—it’s an invitation. And in Decatur, that invitation feels right at home.

SEASON’S EATINGS

Planning your holiday meals? Use these tips to help protect your home and keep costly repairs off the menu.

• Fats, oils, and grease (F.O.G.s) belong in the trash, so throw away any leftovers before the dishes hit the sink.

• Costs for emergency repairs can jump 50% during the holidays, so keeping F.O.G. out of your pipes prevents costly, messy backups.

• Skip the pre-rinse by scraping dishes into the trash before washing. You can save up to 6,000 gallons of water a year.

Keeping tabs on recent rainfall, soil moisture, stream flows, and drought status helps us better understand our region’s water supply. Scan the QR code to visit our website and see the latest stats. Know the Flow
