Nursing Learning Center, Nell Hodgson Woodruff School of Nursing
Beck provided integrated design, cost-estimating and construction management services to create the new Emory Nursing Learning Center. The 70,000 SF facility includes a state-ofthe-art simulation and clinical skills labs, a studio media center, active-learning classrooms, student common areas, offices, conference rooms and support spaces. Phase I, completed in May 2021, provides space for the Emory Nursing Experience, an innovative program for continuing professional education in partnership with Emory Healthcare Nursing.
Equipment was planned around a combination of new equipment, refurbished equipment and equipment designed for simulation only to be able to outfit the spaces for training versus direct patient care. High-fidelity operating rooms were designed with perfusion capabilities, realistic settings for labor and delivery, neonatal intensive care, bariatric patient care, as well as outpatient clinical settings and a home care training room to train caregivers for home based nursing care. Medication dispensing systems were utilized for simulation to train staff for compliance with patient ID validation and proper flow from dispensing to disposal. Manikins were purchased as all new and required careful planning for storage and ergonomic handling and transportation similar to cadaver storage. An additional 15 bays and 2 skills labs will be complete in February 2025.

Emory University Hospital
Rollins Immediate Care Center of Winship at Emory University Hospital
Beck’s integrated team of planners, designers, and construction staff designed and built a clinic inclusive of a diverse range of cancer treatment services. Beck worked in tandem with Simpler Consulting to engage 60 users in a short period to right-size the space to ensure it was operational in the short and long term. This new clinic “template” is designed with cancer patients in mind, including ensuring family support space is available physically and operationally. The clinic features concierge service by integrating technology to allow patients to go directly to their treatment room. Every room is standardized for a range of procedures to allow the entire facility to scale up to 24/7 care. Beck’s integrated approach allowed for the project to be designed quickly by utilizing full-scale mock-ups for user consensus. The mock-ups served as early design documentation so the team could move straight to CDs, effectively cutting the project schedule in half.
Beck’s MEQ team worked to plan for the majority of all new medical equipment. Beck assisted Emory’s procurement team with providing a detailed list, tracking budgetary pricing and assisting in expediting orders following Emory issue of PO while also monitoring any questions from Beck’s construction team to provide timely responses to aid in the coordination of medical equipment.
