Isabelle is progressing to the University of Sheffield to read Biomedical Science, before following her mum’s footsteps into the NHS in genetics or transfusion.

Abigail Geary

A Levels – Biology (A), Chemistry (A) and Environmental Science (A).

Reading Biology at the University of Oxford.

Abigail has always had a passion for Biology.

She came to Preview Day with her school and loved the facilities and the light open spaces. The range of A Levels on offer meant she could study Environmental Science, which really appealed to her.

“My tutors have made a huge difference as they were so supportive throughout my uni application and interview.

“When I travelled to Oxford to look around the university, I knew straight away it was the place for me.”

Her ultimate goal is to work as a Genetic Engineer.

Reading Geography at the University of Oxford.

Eli set his heart on Burnley College at one of our Open Evenings, where he was impressed by the array of options available to him, as well as the welcoming atmosphere.

“Burnley College is a really close community where you get to know your tutors and they’re so supportive.”

Eli shone in enrichment activities including Tackling Climate Change Club and the Modern Languages magazine, Triolingo. His favourite trip was visiting Keswick to complete field work with his Environmental Science class.

How to buy a 16-25 Railcard

The Railcard is the UK’s student rail card, offering 1/3 off most train fares. This can be purchased from any staffed ticket office or online. You may be eligible for a travel grant depending on your household income (subject to conditions). For more info email: s.support@burnley.ac.uk

• Passes can be used on evenings and weekends

Lancashire

Bus passes are available for Transdev Services throughout Lancashire. Your college, evening and weekend bus travel will all be covered on your pass.

*If you live in an area not served by Transdev, like Fence, Rosehill or Sabden, we will help you to purchase a Lancashire County Council bus pass.

How to Buy a Pass

New Students will receive instructions in their enrolment pack about how to purchase their Student Bus Pass.

Returning Students will be emailed with information about how to renew their passes.

Yorkshire

You will be able to purchase a First Bus pass, which can also be used at evenings and weekends.

HOW TO GET YOUR BUS PASS FOR FREE

If you achieve 100% attendance in a term, we will reimburse you the full cost of your bus pass (term 2 & 3 are combined). You may also be eligible for free travel, depending on your household income (subject to conditions).

Academic Pathway

If you’re looking for an excellent academic foundation to take you on to University study and a successful career, A Levels will suit you. You will dive into the theory, building on your existing knowledge and developing your academic skills.

Vocational

Technical Pathway

Vocational courses offer more coursework-based learning, a range of hands-on activities and fewer exams. As a Vocational student you will experience exciting trips and activities and visits from guest speakers, as you head towards a dream career with a leading employer, or progress onto University or a Degree Apprenticeship.

T Levels

Technical Pathway

As a T Level Student you’ll gain in-depth academic and theoretical knowledge while studying with expert tutors in College, before heading out into industry for a minimum of 315 hours of work placement where you will put your skills and knowledge into practice.

Apprenticeships

Combine work and study through on the job training with classroom learning. Themis is the Apprenticeship arm of Burnley College, working with more than 1000 leading employers to help you take your first step on the career ladder. You will be supported by our industry-leading Trainers throughout.

About the course

Kick-start your career in the Performing Arts while working towards the entry requirements for Level 3. You will study key areas including Acting, Musical Theatre and Dance. The course is made up of seven units of study covering topics in auditioning, preparing performances, acting, musical theatre, the performing arts industry, movement, devising, voice, script work and dance. You will be assessed practically in rehearsals and performances using video evidence and tutor observations. Written work is assessed via coursework and internal assessments. We collaborate with employers including The Lowry Theatre, Burnley Youth Theatre, Elevate Young Minds, New Live Theatre Company, Ludus Dance and many more.

About the course

This pre-advanced, one year course will give you the opportunity to explore and develop skills in Performing Arts and Music. The units you will study will cover a wide range of skills such as how to use a stimulus for a performance, and rehearsing for a performance across acting, music and dance. Transferable skills will be developed in areas such as being organised, working with others and research skills as well as developing a personal progression plan in preparation for your next steps. Your assessments will be coursework based, both theory and practical.

You will be expected to present information that you have gathered, keep a working logbook, record or reflective journal, take part in oral or written presentations as well as take part in role play, interviews and other activities. You will be assessed on the rehearsal process and final performance of any practical work. This course will enable you to progress on to our level 2 courses within Performing Arts and Music.

There are plenty of activities and visits to take part in that will help you achieve your ambitions. Past visits have included: West End Theatre trip to London with two West End theatre shows and a workshop. You will also benefit from a range of guest speakers.

You will deepen your understanding of CNC ready workflows where offered, ergonomics, sustainability, and material optimisation, and you will plan projects using cutting lists, job costing, and realistic production schedules.

Training happens in well equipped workshops with industry experienced tutors who guide you through demanding, portfolio worthy projects and professional standards. The City and Guilds Level 2 Diploma in Furniture Making is a practical, employer focused course that builds accurate setting out, safe tool and machinery use, and the manufacture of high quality furniture components.

You will learn to read drawings, create cutting lists, select and prepare timber and panel products, and produce frames, carcasses, doors, and drawers using core joints and reliable assembly methods. Training develops confident hand skills—sawing, planing, chiselling, scraping, and fine fitting—alongside approved machine operations such as saws, planers, thicknessers, routers, and sanders with correct guards and extraction.

Game creation is a growing industry that allows individuals to work towards creating their own games. The course is art driven, focusing on the designing of characters and environments using industry standard software. You will learn skills such as 3D modelling, traditional art, animation, graphic and level design bringing these skills together within the Unreal Engine. You will also write compelling storylines that give depth to your games, as well as developing relevant skills to succeed in university and the industry. Explore music production in a digital DAW-based environment, and get hands on with creating, producing, and mixing your own music. This pre-advanced, one year course will give you the opportunity to explore and develop skills in Performing Arts and Music. The units you will study will cover a wide range of skills such as how to use a stimulus for a performance, and rehearsing for a performance across acting, music and dance. Transferable skills will be developed in areas such as being organised, working with others and research skills as well as developing a personal progression plan in preparation for your next steps. Your assessments will be coursework based, both theory and practical. About the course

Our Forensic and Criminal Investigation course is a great choice for anyone who has a love of science, and is interested in its application to criminal investigations. We cover a number of topics, situations and case studies in this course, which will allow students to fully appreciate the complexities of the criminal investigation sector. You will develop skills across a wide range of scientific techniques in the lab, covering the more well known analytical techniques as well as crime scene processing and fingerprinting. We will undertake a number of simulated crime scene scenarios across both years, covering a range of different crime types, such as murders, suicides, drug related incidents and traffic collisions as well as looking at criminal investigations from a policing and law perspective and procedures in court. Students also develop a range of transferable skills by taking part in mock criminal interviews, and giving evidence in a moot court.

About the course

You will build the knowledge, skills, and behaviours needed for your chosen progression route. Your programme of study will give you the chance to explore business, travel and tourism, and the uniformed services, developing vocational skills that link directly to these industries. Alongside this, you’ll strengthen key employability skills such as problem solving, creativity, communication, presentation and confidence, all essential for preparing you for your next steps.

During the course, you will have the opportunity to join in with Enrichment activities offered by College and have the opportunity to organise and take part in a trip and develop your health and fitness by taking part in fitness activities.
