DO
• Choose subjects because you think you’ll be good at them and because they interest you
• Think about choosing a good mix of subjects to keep your options open
• Research which subjects are essential entry requirements if you are determined to follow a specific career path
• Aim for the highest grades you can –it will make your College choices easier
DON’T
• Don’t choose subjects simply because you want to be with a best friend or favourite teacher.You might end up doing two years of a subject which bores you and not even be in the same group as them
• Don’t forget you can talk to your parents or guardians for advice or your school’s Careers Advisor

Once you get to Year 10, you’ll be thinking about what you want to study at College.
Our BC Programmes are specially designed for Year 10 and 11.
They are free Taster Sessions which give you the opportunity to experience subjects you are interested in.

Pathways Explained
A Level/AAQ
If you’re looking for an excellent academic foundation to take you on to University study and a successful career, A Level will suit you.
You will dive into the theory, building on your existing knowledge and developing your academic skills.
Vocational
• 43 subjects to choose from
• Choose three or four subjects
• Study for two years
• Be assessed mostly by exams
Vocational courses offer more coursework-based learning, a range of hands-on activities and fewer exams.
As a Vocational student you will experience exciting trips and activities and visits from guest speakers, as you head towards a dream career with a leading employer, or progress onto University or a Degree Apprenticeship.
T Levels
• 19 subject areas
• Specialise in one subject
• Study between one and four years
• • Be assessed mostly by coursework
A new qualification introduced by the Government that combines academic excellence with significant workplace experience.
As a T Level Student you’ll gain in-depth academic and theoretical knowledge while studying with expert tutors in College, before heading out into industry for a minimum of 315 hours of work placement where you will put your skills and knowledge into practice.

Frequently Asked Questions
How can I support my young person in choosing their GCSE options?
If they have a specific study pathway or career in mind, it is always beneficial to choose options that will complement their next steps. However, many young people haven’t made any firm decisions on this by Year 9, and our advice is to encourage them to focus on the subjects they enjoy; they are likely to do well in those areas and may even carve their future career from studying a subject they love.
How can my young person get to Burnley College?
There are four free buses and further main bus routes which Students can use to get to College, across Burnley, East Lancashire and West Yorkshire. We are here to support you in finding the best route, advise on parking or bicycle storage. There are also free travel incentives and subsidised transport for those who are eligible.
My Child wants to do a particular course/job in the future but this subject is not offered at school for a GCSE, will this mean they can’t do the course at Burnley College?
Students can work to build their portfolio if they are planning a particular route and aren’t studying this subject at GCSE. Some subjects require additional entry requirements. Our School Liaison Team will be able to advise you and your young person on what they need to pursue their chosen route.
What financial support can Burnley College offer?
We can help Students access a range of financial support for travel, lunches, and subsidies for learning enhancements such as trips. If you feel your young person may be eligible, please contact s.services@burnley.ac.uk.
Is there Additional Support at Burnley College?
Yes, our Learning Development Team offer individualised support to every learner: this can include tools and strategies to ensure Students can progress through their learning and into employment. Please contact the team for more information: learningdevelopment@burnley.ac.uk
What happens if my child doesn’t get the grades for the course they wish to study?
Our expert Advisors are on hand on results day to offer guidance if your young person doesn’t get the grades they expected. There are often different pathways to achieve the same outcome and they will work with your young person to find the best route for them.
Will my young person be able to resit Maths and English if they don’t achieve this at school?
Yes, they will be given timetabled support to resit alongside their chosen course.
What opportunities are there for my young person explore subjects at Burnley College?
Our Year 7 - 11 Open Evening takes place every spring (usually early May) and is specifically for high school pupils and their parents to get a feel for Burnley College and our exciting range of courses and pathways.
BC Programmes are a block of free taster sessions available to your young person in Years 10 and 11. These usually take place October –February. Their school may also attend our annual Taster Day, when Year 10s are invited to take part in sessions in College.
What is the difference between school and college sixth form?
College sixth forms usually only offer an A Level pathway. Burnley College offers all 4 pathways available to young people; A Levels,Vocational Study, T Levels and Apprenticeships with Themis. Our £115m Campus is home to the latest industryleading equipment and facilities.The Burnley College environment is specifically geared around giving young people the skills to prepare them for the world of work or further study.
