Auctioneer Feature

National online auction house John Pye & Sons Limited has secured a contract with the Driver and Vehicle Licensing Agency (DVLA) for the online auction sales of personalised vehicle registration numbers.

The single supplier contract for the Provision of Personalised Registration Auction Services, for a period of up to five years, was awarded to John Pye following a competitive tender in March 2025, after more than 15 years with the previous supplier. It will see the team delivering at least nine auctions each year, selling 18,000 personalised registrations and generating HM Treasury an estimated hammer value of over £43,000,000 annually.

John Pye Auctions will manage the online auction sales of personalised vehicle registration number plates on behalf of DVLA through the long-established www.dvlaauction. co.uk site, via a new and improved auction platform built and run by John Pye’s experienced in-house team. It will offer an enhanced customer experience and new features, including improved navigation, recommendations and a live auction countdown.

Addison Pye, Director at John Pye Auctions said:

“To be selected as a new supplier after 15 years with the previous supplier is a profound achievement. It demonstrates the confidence DVLA has in what we can bring to the table. Hard work, dedication and teamwork made this possible and I am immensely proud of the whole John Pye team. Our ever-excelling ability within the online auction industry will take the provision of this contract onto new heights. We’ll be providing DVLA with an enhanced service, whilst improving the customer’s experience at a reduced cost.”

About John Pye Auctions

The contract starts on 1st October 2025 and interested bidders can register online at www.dvlaauction.co.uk. The first auctions are anticipated on Wednesday 15th October and Wednesday 19th November, both will run for 7 days.

Background

BidHarvest® is part of a technology business that has supported auctioneers worldwide since 2006. It was created to solve a common problem; auctioneers relying on multiple apps and platforms for different tasks. Instead, BidHarvest® brings everything together in one platform, supporting multi-vertical auction businesses

across Livestock, Farm Machinery, Plant, Property and Chattels.

With their software processing over £25 billion in bid volumes and £1.5 billion in hammer annually, Auction Marketer know how to partner with clients to drive growth through the successful adoption of technology into their business. Developed in close collaboration with auctioneers over the past two years, BidHarvest® has been built from the ground up as a modern, unified, cloud-based platform. It enables auctioneers to operate seamlessly across multiple auction verticals without the need for multiple software applications.

Technology

Auctioneers told them their biggest frustration was managing multiple platforms that restricted workflows, required double entry or forced detailed lot information into clumsy, hard-to-read descriptions. BidHarvest® removes these pain points with smart technology that unifies every auction vertical into one fully featured back office. From fine art to salvage, it delivers the depth, flexibility and efficiency you need without the errors, wasted time and manual checks that come with juggling multiple systems.

Empowering Inventory & Cataloguing

BidHarvest® was built to give auctioneers ultimate flexibility in both inventory management and cataloguing, ensuring every lot has the best chance to stand out. With intelligent categories, sub-categories and attribute groups, lots become fully filterable and highly searchable, making it easy for buyers to find what they want and for search engines to index effectively. Auctioneers can create and customise unlimited categories and attributes

without technical support, guaranteeing catalogues and inventory display exactly as intended.

Ease of Use

Their parent–child–grandchild consigning structure is designed around consignments at the top level, with a middle layer for totes or containers such as boxes and pallets, and receipt lines representing the individual item lines. This gives auctioneers a flexible and organised way to manage stock within a receipt. Consignment structures can be created in seconds, exported for onsite cataloguing and then bulk-imported back into the parent consignment, complete with images, all before lots are assigned to an auction.

This collaborative approach is part of the DNA of BidHarvest®. The platform is feature-rich, built around auctioneer pain points and a demo is recommended to see its true potential for any auction business.

Unified My Account Experience

Their clients wanted to give bidders and sellers a truly unified ‘My Account’ experience. BidHarvest® delivers this with a secure online portal that brings everything into one place, from active bids, bid history and watchlists to marketing preferences, invoices, digitally signed contracts, pre- and post-sale paperwork, settlement statements, and collection dockets. It’s a single, streamlined hub for every part of the auction journey.

Smart 3rd PartyConnections

BidHarvest® was built with the intention of being as open as possible to working with complementary technologies. The platform offers hard-wired API connections to DVLA look-up and HPI checking software, enabling vehicle listings to be created quickly and comprehensively. Integrations are also available for property clients through RightMove and Zoopla, as well as payment integrations with Stripe, Worldpay and Opayo. Additional features include address lookup tools, various marketing integrations and, above all, a fully documented API in Swagger for clients wishing to feed the auction platform directly from their existing back-office technologies.

Search Engine Effectiveness

BidHarvest® build on the history of Auction Marketer’s search engine effective technologies. They give teams the tools they need to make every page on their website search effective, users can modify auction listings as required and attributes can be added to the Google schema for even better indexing. BidHarvest® are actively introducing further features to support client viability in AI tools and there are exciting releases in the pipeline.

Customisation

Auction Marketer knows every auction business operates differently. That’s why BidHarvest® is built with a modular architecture, allowing custom features to be added on top of the core platform. This flexibility means businesses with unique requirements can tailor the system while still benefiting from the strength of the core product. With quarterly feature enhancements for all users, and clear updates every time you log in on what’s new and which issues have been resolved. Their proactive approach to ongoing development ensures BidHarvest® continually evolves to meet client needs.

Support and Onboarding

BidHarvest® provides all users with a comprehensive onboarding experience, including train the trainer sessions and a complete product knowledgebase to ensure auctioneers can get up and running quickly. A 24/7/365 online technical support channel is available, allowing tickets to be raised whenever assistance is required. For new clients migrating from other platforms, BidHarvest® also offers a dedicated data migration service, helping to transfer data such as user information and auction catalogue history with ease.

For many riders, the thrill of two wheels begins long before the engine roars, it starts with the hunt. From adventure bikes and sports machines to timeless classics, motorcycle auctions are fast becoming the go-to place to uncover value, variety and the occasional hidden gem.

But what makes auctions different and how can you make sure you leave with the right bike at the right price? Here’s what every bidder should know.

Why Buy at Auction?

Auctions are no longer just for dealers. Riders are turning to them for:

• Lower Prices – Bikes often sell well below retail.

• Wide Choice – Everything from everyday commuters to rare vintage icons.

• Transparency – Condition reports and inspections to help you bid with confidence.

The Auction Scene

Public Motorcycle Auctions

Open to all, these sales mix repossessions, dealer tradeins and private entries. A great place for bargains - if you do your homework.

Liquidation Auctions

When dealers close, showroom bikes and gear often surface here at sharp prices. Low-profile and sporadic, they reward those in the know.

Police & Government Auctions

Expect seized, unclaimed or surplus motorcycles. Some are barely used, others may need TLC, so always check the paperwork.

Classic & Collectors’ Auctions

Vintage Triumphs, Harley-Davidsons, restored Ducatis—

this is where enthusiasts gather. Prices vary wildly, so research past sales before bidding.

Golden Rules for Buyers

• Check the History – Avoid finance or theft issues.

• Research Prices – Know what the bike is really worth.

• Inspect Carefully – Scratches can mean bargains; serious damage, not so much.

• Factor in Fees – Include premiums, VAT and transport in your budget.

• Set a Limit – Bidding fever is real—don’t blow your budget.

• Be Ready to Pay – Auctions move quickly, so have funds and transport lined up.
