PROPOSAL: TEXAS

COMMUNITY CENTER

FRAGMENTS & FIGURES

In collaboration with Julia Fogde YEAR 4

Today, thousands of people pass through Svappavaara on their way to Gällivare, Vittangi or Kiruna. To these passers-by, the village is just an unfamiliar name on a road sign. Even those who claim to have ‘been’ to Svappavaara have often not actually visited the village that was planned and built in the 1960s: Ralph Erskine’s Svappavaara.

However, something that put Svappavaara on the map was the Texas bar and café, which closed in the 1970s.

TEXAS

For fifty years, the bar and café Texas was a well-known meeting place in Svappavaara, serving both villagers and travelers. The journey between Gällivare and Kiruna was often interrupted by a stop along the way; at the three-way junction between Sofia Lindmarksvägen and Kirunavägen stood the white house that welcomed visitors - and said goodbye.

It became clear that this place had made a strong impression on the village and served as a backdrop to many memories among the inhabitants. The house was different from the rest of the buildings in Svappavaara - it was built by a man who had returned from the USA, bringing with him influences from Texas.

PROPOSAL

Combining fragments of Erskine’s utopian vision for Svappavaara, we want to create a new version of Texas - inspired by its heritage and architectural qualities. A place that strives for permanence, that can meet both passers-by and residents.

Using existing fragments, we asked ourselves the question:

Can the expression of restructuring and reassembling fragments from the past and present create a more cohesive built structure?

Stills from the film

FILM AS A METHOD

Have you been to Texas?

It was here when I arrived in ’74. His name was Uncle Hjalmar, I think. He had visited the USA, and I don’t know why he went to the USA — if it was to meet some relatives.

I’m not really sure about that, but when he returned, he got the idea to build that Texas house. It looked like a saloon. That was when I arrived in the village. And you could go there if you wanted to drink coffee or have a beer.

Because that’s what they did in Texas — they drank beer. But I never cared much for beer. There was coffee too.

But it became a place where the men went after work to have a beer, maybe something else, too.

I don’t know.

It’s not there anymore. It’s been torn down. It’s been torn down.

Why?

It got so old. It was nearly falling apart. I remember it when I came to Svappavaara. My parents sent me packages, and I would pick them up at that saloon because the bus always stopped there.

When did it close?

Oh dear, not long after I arrived. Only a year or so. They passed away. Uncle Hjalmar was old.

What did the house look like?

There must be a picture of it, even on the walls.

I think it was gray-brown — a real saloon, Texas style.

The interior?

Everything was Americanized back then when the uncle came. Or he was already here when I arrived in the village.

Who was that Uncle Hjalmar? His wife handed out packages. There must be something here about him.

Where do you pick up packages today? At the post office, in Coop.

Bor du här i Svappavaara?

Man får ta folk utifrån.

By photographing and filming inside our 1:30 scale model, we created a short film about our project in Svappavaara. We paired the material with interviews and posts from Svappavaara’s Facebook group, which were about people’s relationship to this place. Memories and only living myths began to merge.

When they started seriously mining I’m not sure.

You’d need… I have a husband who is very interested roots here.

He probably knows, but I’m not entirely

He’s out in the forest hunting moose.

His hunting team was out this weekend, today.

It’s one of those things…

Everyone’s out moose hunting.

Well, almost everyone.

Most of the men. And some women here hunt, too.

How did you meet? At a dance.

Did it click right away?

No, not immediately, I’d say.

I’m not that easily fooled.

No, but I was happy where I was, and all that.

But I thought, oh well, let’s give it I usually think, “Nothing ventured, nothing gained.”

That’s how it is.

But I really enjoy it here. I like being outside, I love being out in nature.

Svappavaara is like an outpost of interesting connection?

I’ve worked a lot in Kiruna, in schools, in the administration offices.

The link between Svappavaara Yes, it works well.

Has it improved over your lifetime? The buses work really well. There are plenty of connections between

Is the company the same? Yes, Polstjärnan comes from Luleå, so it comes into town and leaves town twice a day. I take the bus a lot. I have a little Nissan Micra, which has been parked for two years

The same route?

You can go to Luleå, leaving at 7:57 in the morning and come back at 7:30 in the evening. It’s great — you can go to a meeting and still get home in the evening.

Do many people come here from activities?

Yes, when we organize ski races here many people come from Kiruna to and some come from Vittangi too.

Was the grocery store up there before? Where the youth center is now — that’s where Coop was. But back then, we had an ICA store down here. In that building down there. And then there was a big white house. Have you seen it?

These stories formed the basis for our design process.

A big lot and a big white house — there was also a store there. But now we have Coop.

Tell me more about the Texas bar.

I don’t know much, because I was so young when it was still a café. So, I don’t know much about it — really nothing more than having seen the building, and then they tore it down.

FRAGMENTS & FIGURES

Bodde du inne i Svappavaara då, och åkte in? Ja.

Märkte du skillnader i skolan?

Till och med 6:an. 7:an, 8:an

Does the race have a name? Sometimes it’s called the Svappavaara the name varies.

I usually help out when they need serving coffee and snacks.

It’s really fun.

You moved to Ormen Långe? Yes, it was exciting. Back then, Ormen Långe was still Now a section is gone.

Which part were you in?

The part that’s gone.

How did it feel when they tore that Well, we didn’t live there anymore

Otherwise, it probably would’ve hit

THE ARCHIVE YEAR 4

Laser scanned fragments of Ralph Erskine’s built heritage in Svappavaara

45 kilometers south of Kiruna lies Svappavaara, a village with many roots. In the 1970s, architect Ralph Erskine was given the opportunity to realize his vision of housing in an Arctic climate. However, Ralph Erskine’s city plan for Svappavaara was never fully realized; only a fraction of the plan was built.

Laser-scanned fragments of Svappavaara juxtaposed with Ralph Erskine’s drawn vision for the village.

METHOD

By collecting laser-scanned material from Svappavaara and pairing it with interviews with Svappavaara residents, we have collected different kinds of fragments.

We studied the remains of the residential building Ormen Långe and 22 singlefamily houses to explore an alternative future for them, and to ask ourselves: Do the fragments matter less than the possible whole?

Can we understand the individual fragments separately - or should we instead consider them as a whole?

ESTÖ IP BACHELOR THESIS

This project is about a container that has taken root on a sports field in southern Nynäshamn. About Estö IP, which is buzzing with life but has no back to lean on. The project has been about affirming the activity that already exists in this place and giving it a stronger framework, as well as conditions to continue throughout the year.

Estö IP is located a stone’s throw away from the Gröndalsviken commuter train station, just south of Nynäshamn city center. The leisure activities in Nynäshamn have built a container on the site, filled with sports equipment and coffee. My project has been about creating a building that complements, or perhaps embodies, the container.

The building’s design is based on simplicity and modularity: a framework of precast concrete columns and slabs that land lightly on the gravel field behind the skate park. The facade is expressed by the variation of room heights inside and is interrupted by balconies facing the sports field.

The balconies rest on beams that come out in the facade. The glazing is set in a steel frame. Inside, installation walls are clad in plywood and rooms are divided by curtains and folding walls. The idea is that the simplicity of the structure will invite redecoration and flexibility.

ALVA FUREMAN

A sports field is characterized by gazes: who is a spectator and who is a performer?

Going to the skate park for the first time requires courage, and it may be necessary to be allowed to be a spectator first. The same principle has been applied in the design of the youth center.

Double or triple-height atriums create views in and out of the youth center: homework on the study balcony overlooks a band rehearsing in the assembly hall. On the other side of the building, some beaded necklaces overlook the hustle and bustle of the gym.

At ground level, the passageway becomes a doubleheight outdoor space whose facades are a showcase for the activities above.

HAFENPLATZ

HAFENPYRAMIDE YEAR FOUR

In collaboration with Mathias Vang Christenssen

Located in the Friedrichshain-Kreuzberg district of Berlin, Hafenplatz is a pyramidshaped residential complex built between 1971 and 1973. Originally designed to provide around 400 homes for both students and ordinary residents, the complex is characterized by its terraced design and connection to green spaces.

Today, Hafenplatz is at the center of a debate about its future. While some redevelopment plans propose its partial or complete demolition, community-led initiatives advocate its preservation and sustainable renovation.

REPRODUCTIVE LABOR

What would our neighbourhoods look like if we were to collectivize aspects of reproductive labour? This question was the focus of our design proposal.

Reproductive labor encompasses all work necessary to sustain human life and, by extension, society as a whole. Caring, cleaning, cooking, providing emotional support or maintaining social relationships.

ORIGINAL TRANSFORMATION

PROPOSAL

Our transformation of Hapenplatz focuses on interconnected apartments for many different living communities and constellations.

Our project explores how architecture can foster connections and care, not through increased complexity, but through flexibility. We have developed a spatial framework that can be adapted to multiple living constellations: multigenerational families, groups of friends or even strangers.

Root overturning; roots being uprooted, an irreversible event. With associations to both family ties, change and the context of the place, it gives name to my proposal for a funeral ceremony room at Strandkyrkogården in southern Stockholm.

The southern part of the cemetery is characterized by a denser forest than the other parts and a change in the plot today contains a memorial grove and meditation place, which however lacks any clear boundary. My intention was to try to frame these places and create a building that faces both the forest in the north and the sun in the south.

An integrated ceiling lantern lets in the southern light and warms the front wall of the ceremony room. The room is square and has no clear direction, and the visitor enters through this light on the way to the ceremony. This is in a desire to avoid too much direction or tradition. The northern part of the building faces the forest and visitors who are saying goodbye to a deceased person do so with the forest just outside.

The whole building is built in English cross-bracing of hard-fired brick. The roofs are supported by glulam beams, which are visible in the ceremony room and covered by plywood in the other rooms.
