From Jewellery to Contextual Art shows the work of Elisabeth Holder and illustrates her remarkable development. Coming from classical jewellery making, she has conducted intensive research on a variety of subject areas. These include ancient signs from human history, investigations into the handling of material in the field of tension between mastery and dialogue, and the fundamental question of what jewellery is and can be. Das führte zu einem Wendepunkt ihres Schaffens. Heute begreift sie den menschlichen Körper als nur einen von vielen Kontexten für Schmuck.

Elisabeth Holder’s classical training as a goldsmith was followed by years of study in jewellery and design, first in Düsseldorf, then London, where she graduated with a Master of Arts degree. While freelancing as a jewellery designer in London, she held teaching posts and lectureships, her final post at the Royal College of Art. Her time in London ended with an appointment as Professor for Jewellery Design at Düsseldorf University of Applied Sciences. In almost thirty years of teaching and research, she devoted her practice to the many fundamental questions related to jewellery and jewellery making. Elisabeth Holder retired in 2017. Her interest in fields of context remains unabated. Today, she lives and works in Erkrath near Düsseldorf.

Elisabeth Holders klassische Ausbildung zur Goldschmiedin war gefolgt von Jahren des Studiums in Schmuck und Design, zuerst in Düsseldorf, dann in London mit dem Abschluss Master of Arts. Ihre Zeit als freie Schmuckgestalterin in London war verbunden mit Lehraufträgen und Dozenturen, zuletzt am Royal College of Art. Elisabeth Holders lange Lehr- und Wanderjahre endeten mit ihrer Berufung als Professorin für Schmuckdesign an die Hochschule Düsseldorf. In nahezu dreißig Jahren der Lehre und Forschung befasste sie sich mit vielen Grundfragen in Bezug auf Schmuck und Schmuckmachen. 2017 beendete sie ihre Lehrtätigkeit. Heute lebt und arbeitet sie mit gleichbleibendem Interesse in Erkrath bei Düsseldorf.
