Gone are the days when golf was a quaint and old-fashioned pastime. Back on the Olympic program since 2016, the sport has had a rebirth like none other, with professionals like Tiger Woods and Rory McIlroy reinvigorating the course, and celebrities from Justin Timberlake to Bill Murray perfecting their backswing.
While traditional golf clubs such as the Royal and Ancient Golf Club of St. Andrews are still the measure of all things, exciting new golf courses and golf resorts have multiplied the range of destinations for golf enthusiasts. This volume introduces the most exclusive, sophisticated, and spectacular golf resorts in the world. These are golfing holiday destinations that score not only with sophisticated layouts in charming landscapes whether against alpine mountain scenery or tropical sandy beaches but also with wonderful rooms, outstanding food, and comprehensive wellness offers. Within this perfect gift for golfers, each prestigious golf resort is presented with an expert review, covering its benefits on and off the fairways and greens. The sections on resorts are interspersed with background information and amusing anecdotes, capturing the history and contemporary world of golfing. Because as all good golfers know, this is more than a club-and-ball sport, it is a lifestyle.

Richly illustrated with full-colour photographs, and detailed plans throughout Features a selection of contemporary projects all employing or repurposing traditional materials, to create new and innovative buildings
Projects include a range of typologies, from houses to cultural centers, or museums to sports pavilions, brand new designer builds to modern extensions on centuries-old heritage buildings
Each example provides a clear illustration of how traditional materials have been used to highlight or enhance the building
The buildings of the past were constructed with readily available and local materials, such as stone, wood, or handmade bricks. Architects in the modern era, however, can choose from an ever increasing number of new materials, each one allowing for different advances in design. And yet the traditional materials have never been entirely supplanted; they still form an important part of the architectural range and are still used by architects the world over. The humble brick, for example, has remained a constant throughout the history of architecture, as has timber with its flexibility and warm tones. But today such elements can be used in conjunction with newer materials to highlight their natural beauty in many different ways: creating a stunning metal facade, wrapping a building with a cool, sleek stone finish, designing a wall with an eye-catching interesting texture, or adding depth or warmth to an internal design. Traditional metals are also finding new use, being employed to coat a structure in a light metal skin that reflects the sunlight, or embedded onto a building to add interest and texture. This book journeys through a curated selection of stunning examples from across the world, showcasing how each material is creatively used over a diverse range of building types and styles, and illustrating the myriad possibilities and forms available to the modern architect who chooses to rework these age-old materials into a brand-new decorative yet functional form.

Demonstrates how key architects across Britain and Ireland are blending contemporary design practices with traditional vernacular buildings
Features stunning full-colour photography throughout, informative descriptions and detailed floor plans Will appeal to all architects, landscape designers, urban planners, developer-clients, and educators Features an array of award-winning and highly commended projects including Bureau de Change's Folds House, winner of a 2016 Times Best Homes Award; Coppin Dockeray's Antsy Plum, winner of the 2016 South West RIBA Award; Tsuruta Architects' House of Trace, winner of RIBA's 2016 Stephen Lawrence Prize; Cassion Castle Architects' Oak Lane House, winner of the Daily Telegraph's Home Buildings Awards Best Residential Design 2016; and Broadstone's Tireighter Cairn, winner of the Single House Building category at the 2017 Building and Architect of the Year Awards
House design in Britain and Ireland is guided by climate, landscape and local resources just as much as the centuries-old traditions that have influenced architectural shape and form. Today s best-known and emerging architects interpret their briefs with imaginative flair: they are transforming houses for the next generation of families by blending their renewed vigour for a local aesthetic with new materials and trends. Many of the new houses featured in British + Irish Modern reflect the architect s focus on redefining local expectations for form by beautifully juxtaposing the traditional with contemporary structures, thus forging a new vernacular. Architects across this region are wholeheartedly seeking opportunities to re-use existing structures in myriad ways, resulting in surprising and remarkably unique renditions of old houses and buildings made new. Shown in stunning, full-colour photographic detail are hundreds of pages of new and renovated houses, cottages and even converted barns nestled in misty rural valleys, including new and retrofitted modern inner-city terraces and townhouses that make the best use of available space. Houses are selected for levels of comfort, use of materials, and dramatic expression of traditional and contemporary architecture, as well as houses that capitalise on longer and warmer summers imposed by changing weather patterns in this corner of the globe. Houses are designed with indoor spaces and intimate courtyards for play and recreation that draw in light and shield from the extreme weather elements yet maintain an eye on sustainability and affordability. British + Irish Modern reveals a rich array of works that showcase how architecture in Britain and Ireland today has much to teach the world about creative, high-calibre design, innovative application of materials, and cautious but clever reliance on resources.
Maggie Toy spent a decade as the editor of international magazine Architectural Design and is the author of several books on architecture.

Alexandra Sophie is a French artist and renowned fashion and fine art photographer. Her work is described as sensual, fresh, and feminine, often entwining humans with nature. Alexandra lives with her husband and her two sons (whom she homeschools) and finds inspiration in their large garden, where they live as self-sufficiently as possible, with their beehives and vegetable patch. She regularly travels to universities and art festivals as a speaker and workshop teacher, and spends much time photographing in natural light in forests, meadows, and other natural environments around the world. Her work often reflects the flowers in her own garden; whenever she is with her camera, it s often only to question humanistic identity and the word normal, a term that has challenged her own identity for much of her young life. Beyond all its meanings, she questions human s identity as normal through her studies of the human body combined with ethereal story-telling, and especially women's rights to place within nature itself. Alexandra s award-winning photography has gained international recognition, featuring collaborations and covers with high-fashion clientele, such as Swarovski, Cacharel, Vogue, Vanity Fair, Elle, and Harper s Bazaar UK, among many others; in 2018 Forbes named her as one to watch in its 30Under30 Europe profile. Features a beautiful selection of the compelling photographic bird portraits produced by Greg Oakley that form part of his Gould Series, a contemporary take on the historic bird illustrators of the mid-19th century Through his magnificent collection of art works, artist Greg Oakley takes our appreciation of birds to a distinctively new and unsurpassed level Lavishly illustrated, this book will be greatly treasured by everyone who loves birdlife
With 240 pages filled with incredible art, the bird lover will enjoy flipping through and taking in the vast distinctions between species in the bird kingdom. Prevention
Australian artist Greg Oakley has had a lifelong fascination with birds and bird art, and began photographing birds 20 years ago, progressing from traditional film to digital in the early 2000s. In the past six years, he has worked on perfecting the difficult and exacting area of bird photography known as setup , where perches and backgrounds are meticulously crafted and designed, and lighting strictly controlled.
There are sometimes hundreds of individual photographs taken and then digitally combined to create a single work. With a combination of photographic skill, field craft, meticulousness and incredible patience, he removes the subject from its natural environment and context, re-imagining it in a field-guide style reminiscent of the historic bird artists.
Oakley s photographs represent a reconstructed contemporary vision of important historic artists such as Gould and Audubon. This collection of stunning artwork is a testament to the natural beauty of birds, highlighting the precarious existence of many endangered species and a reminder of the beauty we could lose. By isolating the subject into an unblemished reality, each species character and beauty is celebrated with empathy and understanding. The resulting images provide both a rare glimpse in stunning detail of these delicate creatures, and a poignant reminder of the tragic, impending loss of many of them due to habitat loss and climate change.

In this invaluable and thought-provoking book, Vladimir Belogolovsky reflects on nearly 20 years of conversations with leading creatives from around the world whose focus is on art, photography, architecture, design, critical theory, and more. His intimate dialogues are with prolific visionaries, the likes of Paul Andreu, Aaron Betsky, Tatiana Bilbao, Christo, Norman Foster, Zaha Hadid, Toyo Ito, Glenn Murcutt, Renzo Piano, Moshe Safdie, Ric Scofido, Richard Serra, Frank Stella, Michael Sorkin, Stanley Tigerman, Bernard Tschumi, Lin Utzon, Massimo Vignelli, Madelon Vriesendorp, and so many others. He exposes the complexity of their thought processes, while comparing and contrasting them to one another to distill more than 101 ideas. His engaging narrative captures the stories behind every project and every personality while exploring many important questions, including what makes a building architecture? How would a Futurist solve problems vs those whose focus is on nostalgia? The selection of interviews gathers many answers and intentions, but inevitably, also many more questions.
Imagine Buildings Floating Like Clouds represents a diverse group of multitalented, creative people who work in disparate places culturally and climatically and came of age in very different times from the revolutionary 1960s to our own time, when the future, for many, is being more feared than desired.
Vladimir Belogolovsky (b. 1970, Odessa, Ukraine) is an American curator and critic. He graduated from the Cooper Union School of Architecture in 1996. After practicing architecture for 12 years, he founded his New York based Curatorial Project, a nonprofit that focuses on curating and designing architectural exhibitions worldwide. Safdie Architects illuminate the process of building the new central connector between the existing airport terminals at Singapore Changi Airport
Includes detailed diagrams of the building's conceptual design, which is based on the geometry of a torus (in reference to a revolution generated by a revolving circle in a three-dimensional space)
Incisive texts provide viewpoints on how the project works sustainably and innovatively, with a composition of lifestyle/retail amenity, cultural attraction, and transportation infrastructure
Jewel Changi Airport documents the creation of a remarkable addition to one of the world s premier airports. The sinuous, faceted glass Jewel serves as Singapore s new gateway to the world, and redefines what an airport can be. Brimming with terraced plantings, lush valleys, floating bridges, art installations, shops, restaurants, and a central waterfall, Jewel is a new type of destination: part public garden and part shopping and entertainment complex. Through photos, drawings, ephemera, essays, and interviews, the book provides detailed insights on how the project came to be from its bold vision and concept to the innovative engineering, environmental, and construction strategies employed to make it a reality.
Founded by Moshe Safdie, Safdie Architects is an architecture and urban design studio imbued with a spirit of idealism and innovation. The practice is research-oriented and forward thinking, drawing upon a depth of experience to solve contemporary building challenges in imaginative and unexpected ways. With intense personal involvement of Moshe and the core group of Principals, the practice operates in the model of a design studio environment - yet with the resources, design intelligence, and nimble organisation to deliver some of the world's largest and most complex commissions. This global practice includes projects in North and South America, the Middle East, the developing world and throughout Asia and Australia. Projects span a wide range of typologies, including airports, museums, performing arts, libraries, housing, mixed use and entire cities.

Dev Desai founded DDAA (Dev Desai Architects and Associates) in 2020, an offshoot from a firm that specialises in residential villas and interiors. His formative development as an architect was under the guidance of Pritzker Laureate Toyo Ito and associates (Japan) and Vo Trong Nghia Architects (Vietnam). Both continue to have a strong influence on his work. As a young and dynamic studio, DDAA constantly challenges the threshold of architectural design through a contemporary unique language. One of the initial projects under DDAA was the design development of a tiny cabin on a coffee estate, as an alternative way of living during the pandemic. To minimise the ecological impact, the cabin was prefabricated and assembled within 4 weeks on-site. What started as a humble architectural project has now evolved into a series of prefabricated cabin designs and an eco-resort where 15 of such cabins will be built on the estate. Desai also founded Re-Build, a research venture that addresses the challenges in conventional prefab, and merges the power of digital fabrication to amortise the cost of construction, reduce the dependence on manual labour, eliminate the need for heavy machinery, and reduce the time for assembly to a few days. The connection with nature and the desire to push the boundaries of architecture and construction are the guiding principles behind his work.

225 mm x 178 mm
240 Pages
£45.00
Text is by acclaimed architectural writer Michael J. Crosbie, with a preface by Cesar Pelli, and foreword by Thomas Fisher Pickard Chilton's design approach is based upon understanding client values, through which mutual trust, rapport, and a collaborative relationship are achieved. The resulting architecture, documented in the book, reflects the client's needs and value system
Relationships between architects and clients built upon expressed values, as well as their import into the final work of architecture are typically not discussed in architectural education, rarely considered in architectural criticism or theory, and usually missing in most writing about architecture. This monograph seeks to highlight and address this deficiency. The book focuses on the process that the firm uses to help their clients to define values, and to intone them through architectural design. Exquisitely presented throughout, this volume presents a range of built and in-process works at a variety of scales, complexity, and locations, with various clients. Most of these projects have not been previously published. The projects will be documented and discussed within the context of the value proposition and design process that distinguish Pickard Chilton s approach to architecture.
Michael J. Crosbie, Ph.D., FAIA, is Professor of Architecture at the University of Hartford, as well as the former Associate Dean and former architecture department chair. He is the editor-in-chief of Faith & Form: The Interfaith Journal on Religion, Art, and Architecture. Dr. Crosbie is the sole author, editor, or contributor to more than 70 books on architecture. The author of hundreds of articles on architecture, design, and practice, Dr. Crosbie is a frequent contributor to international print and online publications and has lectured on architecture throughout the United States and abroad. He is the recipient of the Edward S. Valode & Pistre seem atypical in the world of contemporary architecture. Their bright, cheerful offices on the Rue du Bac in the heart of Paris reflect this nature. It seems quite natural that artists who work with light such as Yann Kersalé and the late François Morellet have been pleased to create installations specifically for these offices because, from their first iconic completed work, the renovation of the CAPC Bordeaux Contemporary Art Museum, the pair have been actively interested in the connections between art and architecture.
Denis Valode says, We are convinced that the role of the architect is to do more with less and not the contrary. The economy of means the correct choice of means is essential. Our goal is to create the best possible result with a certain frugality of means. Once again, this interest in obtaining the maximum result with a minimum of means leads the architects to note that their approach is particularly well suited to current ecological concerns. Denis Valode and Jean Pistre s sense of efficiency has proven to be far more durable and better adapted to the demands of contemporary architecture than the many flamboyant styles that have come and gone since they started working together. Their words are in perfect harmony with their ideas they avoid excessive rhetoric but when they talk about buildings they do so with passion and with clear ideas and methods, often involving their aesthetic sense developed through the world of art.
Denis Valode and Jean Pistre oversee one of the most successful architectural offices in France, working on prestigious towers, hospitals, and research facilities, but also on shopping centers and sports venues. Nor are their projects limited to France they have worked in China, Russia, and numerous other countries. The pair first worked together in 1978 and created Valode & Pistre in 1980. Today the office employs 200 people and provides interior, architectural, and urban design as well as engineering services. These projects highlight the success of the office in breaking through the barriers that usually separate architects who work on privately funded projects and public ones in France.
Valode & Pistre, based in Paris with offices in Moscow, Beijing, and Dubai, is a highly sought-after architectural firm initially founded in 1980 by Denis Valode and Jean Pistre. These days the practice spans multiple fields of expertise, including architecture, urban design and green engineering. Their predominantly large-scale projects are distinguished by their high degree of diversity, seen in the firm s multidisciplinary output, such as from their first completed work in 1990, the Musée d Art Contemporain de Bordeaux to the forthcoming mixed-use retail space in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia, to the Monaco Sea Extension, scheduled for completion in 2025.

Includes essays by renowned bike industry aficionados, who impart significant historical background on the advantages of the wooden bicycle, as well as current thoughts on trends
Highly illustrated, with high-quality detailed close-up photography of bikes and their components throughout Lists a handy reference guide for those looking to source components or design contacts
Up until about a century ago, wood had always been the only available material for the construction of the first bicycles, and it was as recently as the 1950s that wood was the only material used for bike wheels in all competitive cycling realms. These days, in opposition to the great industrialisation of steel manufacturing, wood and bamboo are increasingly being used to create a niche space in design within the industries of transportation, sport, art, culture and indeed modern lives in general. With the significant advances in technological research and application, wood and bamboo are increasingly being promoted as materials suitable for the construction of bicycle frames and individual bicycle components.
Showcasing more than 250 designers from around the world, including craftspeople (many of them renowned bicycle makers), manufacturers and associated organisations, this book dedicates hundreds of pages to beautiful bike designs, illuminating the latest modern trends in specialist bicycle craftmanship. Set out with detailed, distinctive design dialogues from each craftsperson or manufacturer, we learn how wood and bamboo are being enhanced and developed as extremely durable, aesthetically appealing materials, and which are considered sustainable, ecologically viable, user friendly and dynamic across each application. Beautifully illustrated, with historical references and texts by experts in the trade, and backed up with technical engineering knowledge,

Amazing visual feast with a terrific message! David R. Montgomery, Author, Dirt: The Erosion of Civilisations, Growing a Revolution
If we care about nature and our planet s health, we need to care about where our everyday food is coming from. As one of the most destructive practices on the planet, farming outcomes have helped bring us to the brink of catastrophe. Fortunately, they can help bring us back. Food Planet Future explores how.

Critically acclaimed by national and international press, in print and on TV
Will appeal to anyone interested in the natural world, artists, designers and scientists alike
Compact edition
Fruit. The word itself conjures up mouthwatering memories of crunchy apples, luscious strawberries, sweet bananas, succulent melons and juicy pineapples, to which we can add the splendid tropical fruits on our supermarket shelves. They are one of nature s most wonderful gifts but providing us with a healthy source of food is not the reason that plants produce such delicious fruits. It is therefore quite legitimate to ask what fruits are, and why they exist. As will be revealed, the true nature of fruits is concealed in what is buried in their core: their seeds. The key role that both play in the survival of each species explains the manifold strategies and ruses that plants have developed for the dispersal of their seeds. Whether these involve wind, water, humans, animals or the plant s own explosive triggers, they are reflected in the many colours, shapes and sizes of the fruits that protect the seeds and in the extraordinary way that some fruits have adapted to the animals that disperse their seeds, and the animals to the fruits they relish. In this pioneering collaboration, visual artist Rob Kesseler and seed morphologist Wolfgang Stuppy use scanning electronmicroscopy to obtain astonishing images of a variety of fruits and the seeds they protect. Razor-sharp cross-sections reveal intricate interiors, nuts and other examples of botanical architecture and reproductive ingenuity. The black and white microscope images have been sumptuously coloured by Rob Kesseler highlighting the structure and functioning of the minuscule fruit and seeds some almost invisible to the naked eye and in so doing creating a work of art. Larger fruits, flowers and seeds have been especially photographed. The formation, development and demise of the fruits are described their vital role in the preservation of the biodiversity of our planet explained. Fruits are the keepers of the precious seeds that ensure our future; some are edible, others inedible and many, quite simply, incredible.
Wolfgang Stuppy is the seed morphologist for the Millennium Seed Bank Project at the Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew. At the heart of this large international project, which collects and stores seeds and fruits from all over the world, Dr. Stuppy has found the ideal environment to feed his passion for research into the astonishing diversity of seeds and fruits. Rob Kesseler is a visual artist and Professor of Ceramic Art & Design at Central Saint Martins College of Art & Design. Collaborating with scientists, his work inhabits a territory where design, fine art and applied art overlap. From 2001 2004 he was NESTA Fellow at Kew and continues to work with Wolfgang Stuppy on an examination of microscopic plant material. He is a Fellow of the Linnean Society and of the Royal Society of Arts. In 2010 he was appointed Research Fellow at the Gulbenkian Science Institute. His work has been exhibited around the world.

The perfect book for the amateur bird-watcher
When we see a bird, do we really see it? It s perfectly possible to go through life with an almost total disregard for birds. However, in Britain, there are more than a million members of the Royal Society for the Protection of Birds. And thanks to Instagram and other networking sites there is also a growing number of bird photographers opening our eyes to unimagined treasures.
From the giants of our skies to the sweetest singing garden warbler, from Matthew Stadlen s London street to the Indian jungle and taking in countries as far afield as Albania and Australia, this book is, in a way, also a story of his life.
Matthew Stadlen is a TV and radio presenter. He hosts a podcast called '20 Questions With' and he presented a twice-weekly LBC show rated number one in London, and boasts a large national audience of 150,000+. Before that he presented, produced and codevised the hugely successful Five Minutes With interview strand as well as 29 half hour On The Road With documentaries - both for the BBC, where he was also a programme editor on BBC One s This Week after starting out on Newsnight . Matthew made national and international headlines with his articles for The Telegraph and wrote The Matthew Stadlen Interview in the paper. He has written for The Spectator, The Sunday Times and Radio Times, appeared frequently on Sky News and is the co-author of The Politics Companion, published by Think. A sensational photographic exploration of the world of ice and snow, from oceans to ice sheets, glaciers and ice caves, and the stunning landscapes of the world s major mountain ranges Beautiful photography through which documents extraordinary changes across several decades
On-topic: presents how global shifts in temperature are affecting snow and ice, melting glaciers, and how it affects the communities who live in those areas
Authors are experts in their field and have been studying glaciers for over 50 years
Gives a positive message as it s not only a reminder of what we stand to lose, but gives readers the courage to tackle the global climate emergency
Beautiful and moving Stunning images of our frozen Earth New Scientist
We live on a planet where up to a third of the land area is covered by snow and ice during the winter. This frozen world, known as the cryosphere, is captured in all its remarkable beauty by the spectacular photography within this book. Our Frozen Planet is a celebration of these frozen realms, inviting readers to embark upon a stunning photographic journey through the cryosphere.
However, this book also carries a stark warning: although the cryosphere represents a significant component of Planet Earth, it is rapidly declining in response to global warming. The next few generations of humanity will see unprecedented change in ice and snow cover. Now is the time to place on record the magical beauty of such areas.
Experts in their field, authors and photographers Michael Hambrey and Jürg Alean have each studied glaciers for half a century. They have worked in both polar regions, and several of the world s major mountain ranges. Their work has led them to examine ice and snow on all scales, from the mighty glaciers and ice sheets that still cover ten percent of Earth s land surface, to frozen puddles and fluffy snow. In this book, they explore how a myriad of snowflakes are transformed into glacier ice, how this then flows under the influence of gravity, and finally disappears through melting. They discuss how glaciers have eroded Earth s surface to produce some of our most stunning landscapes, and the importance of deposition of debris to the provision of rich soils. They investigate ice in the ocean, on lakes and in rivers, and illustrate the delicate beauty of frost and snow. Finally, they show some of the myriad ways in which plants, animals, and humans interact with the cryosphere.
Replete with breathtaking photography ranging from the tiniest icicle to the most mammoth glacier, this book is a vibrant celebration of this fascinating and breathtaking world in which we live. Our Frozen Planet serves as a reminder of what we are at risk of losing, and, in doing so, gives us the courage to tackle the global climate emergency.
Michael Hambrey is Emeritus Professor of Glaciology and former Director of the Centre for Glaciology in the Department of Geography & Earth Sciences at Aberystwyth University, Wales, UK. He was also founding director of the Climate Change Consortium of Wales. His research interests include glacial geology and structural glaciology. He has published nearly 200 scientific papers and several books, including university-level textbooksGlacial Environments (1994) and, with Jürg Alean, Colour Atlas of Glacial Phenomena (2017). In addition Michael has co-written popular science books Glaciers (2nd edn, 2004) and Gletscher der Welt (2013) with Jürg Alean, and Islands of the Arctic (2002) and The Continent of Antarctica (2018) with Julian Dowdeswell. Jürg Alean was formerly a teacher of geography at the Kantonsschule Zürcher Unterland in Bülach, Switzerland. He has undertaken extensive fieldwork in the Swiss Alps, the Canadian Arctic, Alaska and South America. His research has led to various scientific papers, in particular concerning dangerous glaciers and ice avalanches. He has also published many popular scientific articles and several books, for example, Gletscher der Alpen (2010) and Gletscher der Welt (2013), as well as those mentioned above with Michael Hambrey.

Reissue of an important work written by the father of Canadian astronomy Astronomy is popular! The constant stream of incredible pictures from Hubble telescope has inspired people around the world to look up at the night sky Beautifully packaged
Astronomy is one of the oldest branches of science. It has fascinated humanity from the earliest times. Huge advances have been made since Clarence Augustus Chant s acclaimed work, Our Wonderful Universe, was first published in 1928. We have sent humans into space and walked on the moon. Spacecraft have landed on Mars, and the International Space Station, a joint project among five space agencies, has been continuously occupied by humans since November 2000. We are using telescopes and satellites to observe the skies, studying planets, moons, stars, galaxies, and comets, as well as supernovae explosions, gamma ray bursts, and cosmic microwave background radiation. Is there life elsewhere in the Universe? What is the nature of dark energy? What is the ultimate fate of the Universe? Astronomy is one of the few sciences where amateurs can still play an important active role, especially in the discovery and observation of variable stars, tracking asteroids and discovering transient objects, such as comets and novae. Written in a clear and charming style, Our Wonderful Universe is developed in the form of a talk, presenting the fundamental facts of astronomy in a simple and logical progression. It is illustrated with the complete set of drawings and plates that accompanied the original edition. Its purpose and approach is just as relevant today, and we hope that readers will enjoy the way in which Chant leads us on his journey of discoveries of the Universe.
Clarence Augustus Chant (May 31, 1865 - November 18, 1956) was a Canadian astronomer and physicist. He is considered by many to be the father of Canadian astronomy , and indeed, five of his former students went on to become directors of astronomical observatories. Educated at the University of Toronto and Harvard, he taught at the University of Toronto from 1891 until his retirement in 1935. Chant was notable for his early work on X-ray photographs, but especially for his development of Canadian astronomy. In 1907, during his last year as President of the Royal Astronomical Society, he created the Journal of the Royal Astronomical Society of Canada and the Observer's Handbook. He would remain the editor of both publications until his death in 1956. Chant participated in five total solar-eclipse expeditions, the most important being the one he led to Australia in 1922 to test Einstein's theory of the deflection of starlight by a massive body. In 1928 he published Our Wonderful Universe with enormous success; it was translated into five languages. Through his efforts, the dream of a great observatory near Toronto came to fruition in 1933, when Mrs David Dunlap presented to the University of Toronto an observatory with a 74-inch (1.88 m) telescope. It remains to this day the largest optical telescope in Canada. He died at 91 during the November 1956 lunar eclipse, while still residing at the Observatory House. Asteroid 3341 is named in his honour, and in 1940, the Royal Astronomical Society of Canada created the Chant Medal, awarded each year to a Canadian amateur astronomer in recognition of their work.

Compact edition
This ground-breaking book is the result of the shared fascination of an artist and a scientist with the perfect design of pollen grains, organisms so small that they cannot be seen without a microscope. The grains are enclosed beyond the accessible beauty of the flower until the moment of release, when they are carried by wind, water or animal vectors to achieve their purpose, which is procreation.
Pollen is ubiquitous; in childhood we all learn a little about plant reproduction and the role of the bee but few of us are aware of the astonishing diversity of the structure of pollen grains, although these tiny, extraordinary forms have fascinated the scientifically curious since the seventeenth century. Starting with a clear explanation of the structure and form of pollen, the authors go on to examine the remarkable events from pollination to fertilisation, and the many ways in which pollen impacts unseen on our lives. All of this is interwoven with a dazzling array of original images by the authors, created especially for the book. In this new edition many more original illustrations have been added and the text has been fully updated. Pollen is a unique interpretation of a magical world that no other book on the subject has ever been able to achieve.

Amazing New Scientist
A book that vividly illustrates why plants remain so endlessly fascinating Botanical Society of Britain and Ireland
Seeds are tiny parcels of life, poised to give rise to anything from ephemeral herbs to giant trees that can live for thousands of years. A close look at these tiny miracles of nature through a scanning electron microscope opens up a view into a fascinating and breathtakingly beautiful microcosm few people, even scientists, have ever seen before. The range of sizes, shapes, and patterns plants have evolved over 360 million years to perfect their one and only chance in life to travel is beyond our wildest imagination.
In this astonishing book, artist Rob Kesseler and world-renowned botanist Wolfgang Stuppy, previously of Kew s Millennium Seed Bank, present a unique and highly unusual natural history of seeds. The story of how seeds evolved to ensure the survival of their species and how they adapted to their natural environments including the animals they share them with is stunningly illustrated, combining close-up photography with digitally enhanced scanning electron micrographs.
This book not only captivates and enlightens those interested in the natural world, but also will appeal to artists, designers, architects, and everyone else drawing inspiration from the wonderful and endlessly fascinating world in which we live.
Rob Kesseler is an award-winning visual artist and Emeritus Professor of Art, Design & Science at Central Saint Martins, University of the Arts London. For the past 25 years he has worked extensively with botanical scientists and molecular biologists around the world to explore the living world at a microscopic level. Using a range of complex microscopy processes he creates multi-frame composite images of plant organs. Using a sophisticated coordination of hand, eye and intuition, they are modified by the addition of many subtle layers of colour to create intense large format photographs that captivate the eye and extend the traditions of botanical art into a contemporary field. Collaborators include The Jodrell Laboratory Kew, The John Innes Centre, Norwich, and the Max Planck Institute, Germany. He works from studios in London and Corfu and exhibits and lectures internationally. In 2010 he was Year of Biodiversity Fellow at the Instituto Gulbenkian de Ciência, Portugal. 2014 winner of the RMS Scientific Imaging Competition and in 2022 he was awarded 1st Prize, Botanic Garden Rome for images of seeds from the Arts & Science Synergy Foundation. EU Horizon 2020 Programme. Rob Kesseler is a Fellow of the Linnean Society and Ambassador for Royal Microscopical Society. Wolfgang Stuppy is an internationally recognised seed specialist. He began his career in plant conservation upon joining the Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew in 1999. In 2002, he transitioned to Kew s Millennium Seed Bank at Wakehurst, dedicating 15 years to the meticulous study of seeds from all over the world. It was during this time that Dr. Stuppy acquired a wealth of expertise in the rare discipline of seed morphology that made him a world-specialist in this field. Trained in Germany, he holds a doctorate in comparative seed morphology and anatomy. Presently, Dr. Stuppy is the curator of the Botanic Garden at Ruhr-University in Bochum, Germany.

An inspirational photographic record that will appeal to anyone interested in nature, wildlife, botany and preserving the heritage of the British countryside
Charles Flower is an expert in conservation and manages his own 25 acre hazel copse Showcases a highly topical subject
A traditional meadow full of wild flowers is a rare sight today but it is not too late to restore them and to create new ones. Charles Flower is passionate about restoring the countryside. After the appalling destruction provoked by modern farming methods during the 1970s and 1980s he pioneered practical methods of wild flower restoration on his own farm, where he grows wild flower seed crops and runs restoration workshops. We have been through many painful years of seeing our meadows destroyed but Charles Flower has proved that it is possible to plan for diversity, harvest seed, propagate it and create new meadows, woods, hedges and ponds so that wild flowers can be successfully re-established not only in the countryside but also in our gardens, thus ensuring a supply of nectar over a long period from the woodland primrose in March through to fleabane in the wet meadow in September that will entice back countless butterflies and other insects. This book is full of practical advice amassed by someone who has devoted all his energy to good management of the countryside for over 20 years. It recounts the story of how he has helped restore the flowers and thus ensure the return of wildlife to numerous gardens, farms and estates, a story documented by glorious photographs that cannot fail to inspire.
Charles Flower is a consultant working with many individuals, farmers and landowners as well as the National Trust while running his own 175-acre farm in Wiltshire.
