At Dutchbone we are proud to present our our items crafted from high-quality leather. Leather is a unique and natural material with distinctive characteristics that contributes to both an exclusive look and optimal comfort. Let us take you through the story behind our leather: its origin, treatment, and care.
The origin of our leather
Our leather is sourced in South America and is a by-product of the meat industry. We believe it is important that the leather’s origin is traceable and its processing sustainable. To minimize environmental impact, the water used during the tanning process (the treatment of the skin and hides) is recycled.
The leather is treated in Argentina using a method called ‘In the Blue’. A method of preservation which is more environmentally friendly than traditional techniques. The leather then undergoes thorough washing in specialized machines, after which it loses its characteristic blue tint. This also explains why white leather is particularly challenging to produce.

The treatment and finish
The leather we use is relatively thick and retains natural markings and scars, contributing to its authentic appearance. By embracing these natural imperfections, we reduce waste and use the leather as efficiently as possible.
After initial treatment, the leather is dyed and finished with a top layer of wax, enhancing its beauty while providing protection. During production a fine layer of wax is sprayed over the leather before placing it in a special hot-tub-style tumble dryer, helping the wax bond to the surface. This special treatment creates what we call ‘Wax Leather’.
Though initially stiff, the leather becomes more supple with use and warmth, developing a unique, evolving character.
The Maintenance and care
To keep your leather furniture in top condition, proper maintenance is essential. Leather is sensitive to light and discoloration, so avoid exposing your sofa or armchair to direct sunlight for extended periods. We recommend occasionally wiping the leather with a slightly damp cloth to keep it hydrated. Also, it is advisable to apply a thin layer of wax to the furniture twice a year, which can be ordered from the brand “Oranje”.
With the right care and attention, your Dutchbone leather furniture will remain a stunning focal point in your interior for many years to come. It will become more beautiful with age and our carefully selected materials and craftsmanship ensure a product that’s stylish, durable, and timeless.
