PREFACE

Leadership & Reality How wonderful to start the new year with this edition, which among other topics focuses on Women Who Lead. It is actually quite surprising that this is the first time we are dedicating attention to this theme, as it fits so naturally within the Zuidas environment. On the cover is Barbara Baarsma, Chief Economist at PwC and Professor of Applied Economics at the University of Amsterdam. To me, she is a true role model for women who aspire to build a successful career. Like me, she acknowledges that having

What does a business district need to do to become among the best in Europe? EY and the Urban Land Institute worked it out and ranked Zuidas fourth in Europe, after Paris, London and Frankfurt. Zuidas scores top marks for its high-quality office stock, good public transport links and focus on urban housing and amenities. These factors map exactly onto the key pillars that Hello Zuidas has been promoting since 2012, and it’s thanks to our 325-plus member organisations, rock-solid Hello Zuidas team, creative editors and – last but certainly not least – you, our readers, that our district has risen so high in the ranks. On behalf of all of us at Hello Zuidas, best wishes for a healthy and happy 2026! OLIVIER OTTEN - Managing director of Hello Zuidas 3

BUILDING THE FUTURE

NEW AMSTERDAM ZUID METRO PLATFORMS TAKE SHAPE Just above the new Brittenpassage – the additional passenger tunnel for Amsterdam Zuid station – a protruding steel frame recently appeared. This is the enclosure that will house the staircases and lift that passengers will use to reach the metro platforms from the new passageway. After that work continued on the metro platforms, so that we can put the platform roofs in place in January 2026.

Hello People

:)

HELLO PEOPLE

GOT A MINUTE? In this issue of Hello Zuidas we’re shining a spotlight on inspiring women: on women who have made a mark – each in their own way. From international role models to quiet pioneers to personal heroines close to home. What they all have in common? Vision, perseverance and the courage to strike out on their own path. We asked four professionals to tell us who inspires them and why. Their answers highlight the many faces of leadership, impact and power.

Kira Beckers Marketing coordinator at Greenberg Nielsen “There are so many successful women that it’s hard to pick one, but if pressed I’d say Hailey Bieber. Hailey Bieber is an American model who’s married to Justin Bieber, the international pop star. I consider her to be a fashion icon as well as a successful businesswoman. She’s only 29, the founder of Rhode – a beauty empire valued at 1 billion dollars – and a mum on top of that. She’s gotten a ton of hate online for her relationship, which makes it extra impressive to me that she managed to stay strong and accomplish all this.”

16

Hello People

Anja Göhringer Senior urban planner with the City of Amsterdam “As an Amsterdam city planner in involved in adapting Buitenveldert for the demands of the future, my role model is Jacoba Mulder. She was the first female architect to work in the city’s urban development office and one of the authors of the General Expansion Plan for Amsterdam (AUP). Her detailed design for the street plan and green spaces laid the foundations for post-war Amsterdam. Despite being the creative brain (alongside Cornelis van Eesteren) and – as the director of the urban development office – the one who actually put the plans into effect, her crucial contribution is sadly often overlooked. Perhaps her relative obscurity stems from her conviction that ‘the work outweighs the person’, but Mulder’s unflagging focus on the human element is something that really motivates me in my own work every day.”

Fleur Fransen Corporate sales manager at Element Amsterdam “Without a doubt, my answer to this question is my mother. She’s a powerful woman who set the perfect example for me of working hard while also enjoying life to the full. She has worked her entire life, scaled the ladder step by step, and now confidently oversees a team of mostly men, so she’s literally a woman at the top. But she’s also the sweetest Sophie Tricot

a relatively young age. She combines strategic insight with strong subject-matter expertise and is not afraid to make clear choices in a complex environment. Her career shows that, as a young woman, you do not have to wait for ‘your moment’, but can create it yourself by coupling ambition with expertise and courage. I recognise the same drive to make an impact, to be visible and to take responsibility. Elise demonstrates that leadership is not a matter of age, but of vision and bravery.”

Women Who Lead Special

The Paradox of Leadership: Amsterdam Zuid as a Leadership Learning Ecosystem

Prof. dr. Svetlana Khapova

Amsterdam Zuid is widely recognised as one of the Netherlands’ most important economic regions. Home to multinational headquarters, professional services firms, cultural institutions, and global talent, its economic strength is clear. Yet the foundation of this success is often overlooked: education, research, and the continuous development of leadership capacity. In today’s knowledge-driven economy, innovation is no longer produced by infrastructure alone. It emerges from people who can think critically, collaborate across boundaries, and navigate complexity. This redefines Amsterdam Zuid not only as an economic hub, but as a leadership learning ecosystem, where professionals, academics, and organisations come together to reflect, learn, and shape the future. 20

HELLO ZUIDAS RESIDENT

“My place in Zuidas is small, but I live big – everything I need is just around the corner.”

Kyra Boog lives in The Pulse

Hello Zuidas Resident

Since moving to The Pulse, Kyra Boog has felt right at home in Zuidas. The 24-year-old has a job in Amsterdam as a project planner for real estate, alongside which she’s taking a course to improve my professional skills in project calculation. Sport is also a big part of her life. She’s on the hockey pitch every week, enjoys playing padel and passionate in ski en snowboarding. Kyra has been happily living in her own modern studio flat in The Pulse since March 2025. Can you tell us something about yourself? What do you do, and what brought you to Zuidas? “As a project planner, I spend my days planning, preparing and overseeing projects. I work closely with my colleagues, site managers and residents, and that variety makes the job really enjoyable,” Kyra says. “I’m also taking a course to improve my professional skills. I moved to The Pulse in March 2025, where I’ve got a lovely little studio. It’s a modern place that’s perfect for my lifestyle, and the location, near Zuid station, makes living here super convenient.” What is your favourite spot at home? “Definitely my sofa. I love unwinding there after a busy day at work or studying. It’s my place to decompress, usually with a good series on.” What is your favourite spot in Zuidas? “What I love about living in The Pulse is that it feels like a little world of its own. We have a cinema, a restaurant and a supermarket to come in and around the building. Plus, everything is within walking distance, which makes living here not only practical but pleasant. I feel like I have everything I need right on my doorstep, minus the crowdedness of the city. All those things together make this piece of Zuidas perfect for me.” Is there anything Zuidas lacks? “It tends to be fairly quiet after work. I’d love to see a bit more buzz in the form of more restaurants and cafés. Places where you meet friends for an impromptu drink would really make Zuidas more of a social spot.” Are there any downsides to living in Zuidas? “Parking is a real challenge. There aren’t many spaces and the rates have gone up a lot, so it can be tricky for friends and family to drop by just whenever. It would be good to have more parking facilities at some point to make Zuidas easier to reach by car as well as by public transport.”

Beauty & Health

Soap Clinics: Skin Improvement, Injectables & Small Surgery Soap celebrates its 20th anniversary this year. Founded twenty years ago by sisters Stephanie Litjens and Esther Meijer-Litjens, Soap was built on the principles of quality, expertise, and personal attention. Cosmetic doctor and co-founder of Doctors at Soap, David Mosmuller - now also CEO - plays a significant role within the company, which currently operates 16 clinics. The overarching mission remains unchanged: prioritizing quality over quantity, with aesthetic medicine built on long-lasting, natural-looking results. No Trace Face Philosophy After completing his medical degree and PhD research in Plastic Surgery in Amsterdam, and gaining experience in both plastic and general surgery, Mosmuller embarked on a career in aesthetic medicine. He recalls those early years as a period marked by excessive requests for overfilled lips and overly tightened faces. Lessons that taught him exactly what he didn’t want to do. In 2013, he was one of the first doctors to join Doctors at Soap as the first clinic focused on achieving a fresher, more natural appearance rather than a visibly treated look. During this time, the No Trace Face principle was developed: a concept focused on subtle, refreshed and natural aesthetic outcomes. 30

INNOVATIVE MOBILITY IN ZUIDAS: HOW IDEAS ARE TAKING SHAPE IN PRACTICE Sustainable mobility and logistics are taking ever more tangible shape in Zuidas. The recent presentation of the Zuidas Sustainability Award highlighted projects illustrating how various organisations are helping to make Zuidas more sustainable. The award also showcased mobility projects demonstrating how smart logistics and innovative solutions can improve access to Zuidas: from Bundel.it’s reverse logistics to consolidated deliveries by ISS and City Hub and new mobility hubs such as E-lympic.

Meet the...

Zuidas is best known for being Amsterdam’s business district, chock-a-block with skyscrapers and scores of offices. More recently, however, the district has grown into a veritable urban neighbourhood and a great place to live and hang out. Many businesses have also discovered Zuidas, and with their arrival, the district has added a wide range of services and amenities, including shops, schools, fitness centres and places to drink and dine. Powering each of these establishments are entrepreneurs and employees with their own special, personal stories that we’re eager to share with you.
