Dear Friends,

As we shift into the second quarter of the year at Zoo Miami, we are emboldened by a truly memorable and exciting beginning of the year. This past March, Feast with the Beasts brought our community together once again in spectacular fashion. Every year, I am blown away by the way our staff, local vendors, sponsors, and community partners show up to put together such a festive and fun celebration – all in the name of supporting wildlife.

In a moment of collective pride, our team broke ground on our new stateof-the-art Animal Hospital – a milestone that marks a major leap forward in our mission to provide the very best care for our animal residents. In a few pages, we introduce our Capital Campaign Case for Support, which provides a look at the vision we have for the future of Zoo Miami. In addition to our new Hospital, the campaign includes projects that will broaden and enrich the guest experience, enable us to save imperiled species, and establish a Conservation and Research Center. We are so proud to share this deeper look into the future we are working toward.

Looking to the season ahead of us, Zoo Miami is already blooming with spring experiences. Our spring campers recently buzzed their way through the park, getting up close with the wonders of wildlife and nature. Egg Safari returned bigger than ever, creating a joyful celebration for families across our community. With egg hunts, Easter Bunny photos, and more, children and families enjoyed an incredible experience filled with fun and lasting memories. As the months turn to summer, we can’t wait to see what else the year brings.

On a final note, in light of recent threats that have resulted in closures at Zoo Miami, we want to remind our guests and supporters that there is nothing more important to us than the health and safety of our guests, staff, and animals. Our team continues to work closely with Miami-Dade County officials to monitor any potential hazards and respond accordingly. We want to thank our community for their patience and understanding through uncertain and challenging times.

As always, thank you to our members, guests, donors, and partners for your support. We look forward to growing more with you in the months to come.

Gardens in Bloom at Zoo Miami

At Zoo Miami, plants are more than just landscape — they are essential to our mission!

Our gardens provide habitat enrichment for animals, support conservation programs, and offer guests a deeper understanding of global ecosystems. This Spring, we invite you to come gaze at the gardens of Zoo Miami and experience a richer, greener side of the Zoo.

Palm Promenade

Stroll beneath a stunning canopy of palms representing species from around the globe. This iconic walkway celebrates one of South Florida’s signature plant families in dramatic fashion.

Butterfly Gardens

Designed to attract and support native pollinators, these vibrant gardens provide essential habitat for butterflies and other beneficial insects — while offering guests a colorful and immersive experience.

Succulent Garden

A striking display of sculptural, drought-tolerant plants from arid regions around the world. This garden highlights the beauty and resilience of species uniquely adapted to thrive in challenging climates.

Located in the walkway to the Entry Plaza

Gigi’s Children’s Maze

A playful and interactive garden experience designed especially for our youngest explorers. This living maze encourages curiosity, discovery, and a hands-on connection with nature.

Pine Rockland Garden

Pre-Historic Garden

Located near the Conservation Action Center

Step back in time and discover ancient plant lineages that once grew alongside dinosaurs. Cycads, ferns, and other primitive plants showcase the fascinating evolution of the plant kingdom.

One of South Florida’s most endangered ecosystems comes to life in this conservation-focused garden. Featuring native species that once dominated the Miami landscape, this collection helps preserve and educate guests about this rare habitat.

Through accreditation by ArbNet and the American Public Gardens Association (APGA), Zoo Miami has earned prestigious recognition for excellence in plant conservation, horticulture, and botanical garden management. This achievement reflects years of dedication by our horticulture team to cultivating, preserving, and showcasing extraordinary plant collections from around the world.

In addition, Zoo Miami is a proud member of the Association of Zoological Horticulture (AZH) and North American Japanese Garden Association (NAJGA)!

Zoo Miami Breaks Ground on State-ofthe-Art Animal Hospital

On February 20, 2026, Zoo Miami broke ground on a new 25,000-square-foot facility designed to elevate animal care and welfare.

The celebratory milestone event was attended by Miami-Dade County Mayor Danielle Levine Cava; Miami-Dade County Commissioner Kionne McGhee; Miami-Dade County Parks, Recreation, and Open Spaces Director Christina White; Zoo Miami and Zoo Miami Foundation leadership and community partners.

Funded through a private-public partnership, the hospital will be uniquely integrated along a public guest pathway, allowing visitors to observe veterinary care in action. The facility will replace our current Animal Hospital and give our veterinary team the space and tools they need to treat more than 2,000 animals from nearly 400 species that reside here at Zoo Miami. It will include radiology and CT scan rooms, treatment and surgery spaces, and much more.

This much-anticipated project is the result of the incredible support of Miami Dade County, Zoo Miami Foundation, our donors, members, and community.

African Painted Dog Pups Make Their Debut

On November 20, 2025, Zoo Miami welcomed a litter of adorable and highly endangered African painted dogs! The litter of two males and three females remained secluded in their den with their parents for the first few months to bond. Earlier this year, they made their debut on their public habitat and can now be seen daily by Zoo Miami guests!

The pack of pups have been named Gobo, Mokey, Wembley, Boober, and Red, after characters from the popular TV show “Fraggle Rock.” This litter is the first for six-year-old mother, Uzuri, who was born at Zoo Miami. The father, also six years old, was born at the Brookfield Zoo in Chicago. Both have done an excellent job caring for their puppies.

With fewer than 6,000 individuals remaining in the wild, African painted dogs are among the most endangered carnivores in Africa. They are highly cooperative hunters and boast one of the highest hunting success rates among large carnivores. Their teamwork allows them to take down prey much larger than themselves, including wildebeests and other large antelopes as well as warthogs and smaller antelope species.

The greatest threats facing African painted dogs include persecution by landowners who view them as livestock predators, habitat fragmentation, and the transmission of diseases such as rabies and distemper from domestic dogs.

Dental Week

Just like humans, dental health is crucial to the wellbeing of animals. As part of Zoo Miami’s preventative medicine program, routine dental procedures are performed on a variety of animals to check for and treat a wide range of conditions that could lead to medical complications.

This past February, veterinary dentist, Dr. Jamie Berning, DVM, DVADC, of Veterinary Dentistry and Oral Surgery of Ohio, along with members of her team, traveled from Columbus, Ohio, to Zoo Miami, to perform a series of dental procedures on several animals. These included two Malayan tapirs, two bobcats, a cheetah, a golden lion tamarin, two servals, a Kune Kune pig, and an African painted dog.

Over the course of several days, procedures ranged from consultations, cleanings, and examinations to extractions and root canals.

Zoo Miami is deeply grateful for the expertise, dedication, and generosity of Dr. Berning and her team in providing this critical care to the animals.

ZOO MIAMI CAPITAL CAMPAIGN

Case for Support

As one of the South Florida’s most beloved and defining institutions, Zoo Miami welcomes more than one million guests each year. But its true impact cannot be measured in attendance alone.

Zoo Miami shapes how our community understands wildlife, conservation, and our shared role in protecting the natural world.

Today, we stand uniquely positioned at the intersection of nature, education, and conservation. At the same time, local wildlife is under threat and global species loss is accelerating at an unprecedented rate, but aging infrastructure at the zoo limits our ability to meet these challenges.

Thanks to an extraordinary public-private partnership between Miami-Dade County and Zoo Miami’s dedicated donors and guests, more than $100 million has been committed toward the future of the Zoo. Now, private philanthropy must rise to meet the moment.

In addition to our new state-of-the-art Animal Hospital (now under construction), the campaign includes several projects that will enable Zoo Miami to save local imperiled species and participate more fully in the AZA Species Survival Plan.

Family Water Play Area

These projects include a new Manatee Rescue, Rehabilitation, and Release Critical Care Center, the transformation of our great ape habitats, and efforts to protect species like the Cape Sable Seaside Sparrow and the Red Wolf. Plans are also in place to establish a stand-alone Conservation and Research Center.

Each year, Zoo Miami welcomes hundreds of thousands of children and families to experience the wonder of wildlife. Through this campaign, we can transform these moments into lifelong values through three distinct, purpose-driven investments: a reimagined Children’s Zoo, a new Education Center, and a dedicated Family Water Play Area, each designed to meet families where learning truly begins.

This campaign is more than an investment in buildings or exhibits. With strong public investment already committed, the opportunity before us is clear: private philanthropy can now help shape a world-class zoo that leads with purpose, protects biodiversity, and reflects the values of a global city.

Manatee Rescue, Rehabilitation, and Release Critical Care Center

By joining this effort, you become part of a lasting legacy. One that ensures Zoo Miami is not only a source of pride for our region, but a force for conservation and education for the world.

Rescued & Released

Rescued after being entangled in a fishing line and caught on a crab trap, juvenile green sea turtle “Fudge,” was brought to our Sea Turtle Hospital in 2025 for rehabilitation. After being treated for his injuries, along with having fibropapillomatosis (FP) tumors removed, Fudge was recently released into the crystal clear waters of Biscayne National Park.

In late January, as part of the Manatee Rescue and Rehabilitation Partnership (MRP), Zoo Miami staff joined teams from SeaWorld Orlando, The Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission (FWC), and the Dolphin Research Center to release a rehabilitated manatee mother and calf. The mother had been found injured from a fishing line entanglement, unfortunately resulting in a partial flipper amputation. The pair was released in Key Largo following months of recovery at SeaWorld Orlando.

In March, Zoo Miami had the opportunity to assist in the release of two rehabilitated manatees, Luca and Giovanni. Their rescue and rehabilitation journey was made possible through the collaboration of many MRP partners, including FWC, Dolphin Research Center, SeaWorld Orlando, and Florida Keys Aquarium Encounters.

The Ron Magill Conservation Scholarship is an annual award conceived and created by Zoo Miami’s Ron Magill and funded through the Ron Magill Conservation Endowment at the Zoo Miami Foundation. Its primary purpose is to inspire and support young adults pursuing degrees in the life sciences who are committed to building careers in wildlife conservation.

Earlier this year, two exceptional students were awarded $5,000 scholarships to support their ongoing commitment to wildlife conservation.

Tatiana Caballero, a biology major at Miami-Dade College, is driven by a deep passion for animal welfare and conservation. Her goal is to become a zoologist and take a leadership role in conservation initiatives.

Emily Wrubel, a student at the University of California, Berkeley, has dedicated herself to the care of animals both in the wild and under human care. She aspires to become a veterinarian specializing in wildlife, helping to ensure healthy and sustainable animal populations.

Congratulations to these two exemplary future conservation leaders. For more details about the Ron Magill Conservation Scholarship and its application process, click here.

In honor of World Otter Day this May, we are proud to also recognize Miccosukee Tribe of Indians of Florida’s generous sponsorship of our North American River Otter Exhibit, helping inspire guests to connect with these playful ambassadors of freshwater ecosystems.

Thank you, Miccosukee Tribe of Indians of Florida, for championing wildlife education and conservation at Zoo Miami.
