02 A chemical reaction happens when substances interact and their atoms are rearranged to form new substances. The substances we start with are called reactants, while the substances formed after the reaction are called products. Chemical reactions may sound complicated but they actually happen around us every day. In agriculture, they happen in plants, soil, fertilizers, and even in the decomposition of dead leaves. One of the best examples is photosynthesis. Plants use sunlight, water, and carbon dioxide to make glucose, which helps provide the energy and materials they need to grow.

Daily Life

Chemistry is important in plants and agriculture because it helps farmers grow healthier crops. Fertilizers provide nutrients that plants need, while soil testing helps farmers know if the soil is too acidic or too alkaline. Composting also uses chemical processes to turn organic waste into something useful for plants. One example we see every day is photosynthesis. Plants take in carbon dioxide and water and, with the help of sunlight, produce food and oxygen. Without this process, plants would not be able to grow and provide food and oxygen for living things.

Dr. Ramon Cabanos Barba (August 31, 1939 – October 10, 2021) was a renowned Filipino inventor and horticulturist who revolutionized the Philippine mango industry. In recognition of his monumental contributions to agricultural sciences, he was proclaimed a National Scientist of the Philippines in June 2014.

Before Dr. Barba's innovation, mango trees in the Philippines only bloomed and bore fruit seasonally, usually once a year. Local farmers historically used a tedious technique called "smudging"—burning organic materials under the trees to create smoke—to trigger out-of-season flowering.Dr. Barba discovered a vastly superior, scientific alternative. He found that spraying a 1% solution of potassium nitrate (commonly known as salitre) combined with ethrel directly onto the trees could induce flowering at any time of the year.
