Teflon

It’s a PFOA

Introduced to the consumer market in 1963, Zepel is the Dupont name-brand for a Teflon coating specifically intended for application to textiles. The hydrophobic property of this polytetrafluoroethylene (or PTFE) polymer make it waterproof and stain-resistant, but it also means the chemical is incredibly difcult to break down. The PTFEs and perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA) historically utilized in its production are known as “forever pollutants;” PFOAs in particular present serious health and ecotoxicological efects, including significant birth defects and cancers. While eforts to replace the PFOAs present inside the PTFE production process have created alternatives, recent EPA testing continues to reveal equivalent toxicity with any fluorine-derived polymers.

Zepel isn’t the only “fabric fluoridizer” on the market! So are name brands Scotchgard and Gore-Tex. Even the US Army has its own version - Quarpel. Almost all stain or water resistant fabrics have been treated with some version of a PTFE. It’s more than just raincoats! Think of your khakis, your couch, your carpet…even Band-Aids.
