From Where I Sit Since its inception in 1954, the scholarship program has remained at the heart of the Zeta Tau Alpha Foundation’s mission, and we are so proud of its steady growth and success. That first year, we gave out two scholarships of $500 each. Thanks to our donors and dedicated collegiate and alumnae chapters, we were thrilled to give over $1.5 million in scholarships to more than 500 members for the 20252026 academic year! The fact that we can give the gift of $12,500 to nine outstanding graduate students, in honor of our Founders, is amazing. I am thankful for all the women who came before me and built this program and the wise sisters on our Foundation board who keep it moving forward. I appreciate the alumnae sisters who write scholarship recommendation letters each year and the very dedicated Scholarship Review Committee that read more than 1,200 applications this past spring. Donations from our chapters and members help young women stay in school and support alumnae sisters as they navigate the rigorous demands of fulltime graduate school. The personal, handwritten thankyou letters the Foundation board received this fall are touching. These heartwarming letters show that scholarships ease a bit of the burden of education costs. They are full of gratitude and firmly express that these sisters want to be able to give back to our beloved Fraternity someday. My ZTA volunteer path has led me to what I consider the most rewarding roles in the Fraternity: Leadership Consultant, Province President, Director of New Chapters, Mentor, and now, Foundation Vice President of Scholarship. Working with collegians for over 20 years, I have witnessed outstanding young women trying to juggle work, chapter leadership roles, and campus and community activities, all while focusing on their grades! I’m honored to impact these women through the scholarship program. The ZTA Foundation board ensures that there is at least one scholarship recipient from each chapter that has eligible applicants. There is a need everywhere, and education costs continue to rise. Thank you, sincerely, to our sisters and chapters who fund one-time Recognition Scholarships and those who make the ongoing commitment and effort to fund Endowed Scholarships. These are the gifts that keep on giving. The thank-you notes detail a strong commitment to ZTA, passion for the future, and a love for our sisterhood, and for that, I am grateful.

Leading up to the campaign day on Oct. 15, Zetas flooded social media with treasured photos from collegiate days, philanthropy events, Big/Little reveals, leadership opportunities, alumnae gatherings, and many other nostalgic moments that captured the spirit of ZTA sisterhood. Each snapshot was more than a memory; it was an invitation to give back to the organization that has shaped so many lives. On the big day, the Presidents of ZTA’s three entities—Dinah Jackson Laughery, Carolyn Hof Carpenter, and Natalie Yingling Lisko—donated to the “3Ps Challenge,” raising more than $3,000 to kick things off. Then, Zetas across the country took up the torch and ran with it! For the second year, sisters could add to the excitement (and sprinkle in a little competitive spirit) by creating a Sisterhood Circle to team up and collectively raise funds. This

year, 32 Sisterhood Circles contributed to the day’s success by donating an impressive $50,411. The Sisterhood Circles with the most participation this year represented Leadership Consultants, International Office Staff, the ZTAlways virtual alumnae chapter, and more! Donations continued to roll in through the end of the month. Every gift was undesignated, giving the Foundation the flexibility to funnel support where it is most needed—to scholarships, leadership development, educational programming, and philanthropy efforts—thus extending ZTA’s impact far beyond any one campus or community. This year’s success was amplified by the support of Presenting Sponsors Shamim Syed Wu (Theta Omega, California State Polytechnic University, Pomona) and Jordan Wu. For Shamim, giving back is rooted in her own ZTA experience. “From my time as a Theta Omega to my involvement with the Long Beach, CA Alumnae Chapter, Zeta Tau Alpha laid the foundation for so much of what has shaped my life and career,” she shared. “It taught me the power of women supporting women and the importance of leading with both heart and purpose.”

Zeta Tau Alpha has returned to the state of Utah! Fraternity and sorority life at The University of Utah has doubled in size over the past five years, with recruitment numbers soaring on a campus that previously had only six sorority chapters. An impressive 10 NPC organizations applied for the opportunity to join the community. In April, ZTA was selected to reestablish our Iota Tau Chapter, originally founded in 1990. Leadership Consultants arrived in mid-August to participate in the first round of Primary Recruitment and spread the word that ZTA was coming soon. Our extension recruitment began in early September, when the Extension Team and I were joined by National President Dinah Jackson Laughery, ZTA Foundation President Carolyn Hof Carpenter, and ZTA Fraternity Housing Corporation Vice President Housing III, Marnie Marlar Frazier. Vice President Alumnae II Barb Chang-Holt attended an alumnae reception for ZTAs in the Salt Lake City area to celebrate the return of the chapter. Collegiate recruitment events focused on our philanthropy and the ZTA Foundation, as well as the ZTA experience, and we were able to share the exciting news that the FHC has purchased a facility for the new chapter. After a memorable week of events, invitations to membership were extended, and Bid Day was celebrated at the A. Ray Olpin Student Union, kicking off a new ZTA era at “The U.” On Friday, Oct. 24, Leadership Consultants and collegians from Epsilon Chapter (University of

Arkansas) performed Initiation services, welcoming new members into our ZTA sisterhood. That same night, chapter members received word that they won Homecoming Week, in their very first year! As part of Family Weekend, chapter members and their families enjoyed a picnic before the homecoming game, where Iota Tau member Gaby Karakcheyeva was announced as homecoming royalty. Chapter President Kate Brague was initiated the next morning, after which Mrs. Laughery and I conducted the Reactivation of Chapter service and installed the new chapter officers of ZTA’s 214th link. That afternoon, more than 225 guests commemorated the chapter’s return with a banquet, held at Rice-Eccles Stadium. Many gifts were bestowed upon the chapter in honor of the occasion. Former National President Sherry Server Tilley presented Lori McDonald, Vice President for Student Affairs at The University of Utah, with a donation to the university’s Imagine U scholarship on behalf of the ZTA Foundation, and FHC Secretary-Treasurer Casey Guimbellot Pash shared more details about the chapter’s future home, located on Butler Avenue. In her remarks, chapter President Kate expressed her gratitude for all that lies ahead. “I am here with the 140 new sisters Zeta Tau Alpha has given me, and I could not be more grateful for each and every one of you. My goal is to celebrate each woman in ZTA and what makes her special, to unify us all.”

Small Changes Lead to Big Impact By Christy Marx Barber, Contributing Writer Four collegiate chapters—diverse in chapter size, campus enrollment, and location—had great success in common last year. By focusing on the “why” of ZTA’s philanthropy with passion, engagement, and fun, they significantly increased their donations to the ZTA Foundation during the 2024-2025 academic year. Iota Chi Chapter (Middle Tennessee State University) increased its fundraising by 131%. The chapter of 78 members hosts an annual Pink Pancake Breakfast for the campus and community each fall. “What makes this event so successful is the genuine passion our members pour into every detail, from planning and promotion to flipping pancakes early on a Saturday morning with smiles on their faces,” said Vice President Philanthropy & Service Callie Copeland. The welcoming and upbeat environment creates a sense of unity that extends beyond the fraternity/sorority community, drawing in students, faculty, alumnae, and community members.

The Zetas also invite local businesses to promote their products at the breakfast, and the businesses donate a percentage of their sales.

Iota Chi also brought back its Big Man on Campus event after a 10-year hiatus. “That not only strengthened our philanthropy efforts, but also deepened our sense of pride, purpose, and connection to ZTA’s mission of making a difference,” Callie said.

Theta Omicron Chapter (Baylor University) also hosts a successful Big Man on Campus event and schedules unique activities throughout the year. With enthusiastic engagement from all 362 members, the chapter saw a 61% increase in its fundraising. “We don’t focus on the money we raise, but on the impact we can have,” said VP Philanthropy & Service Alexandra Vincent. “We educate the chapter on the research grants the ZTA Foundation funds. It increases the passion and engagement and humanizes the 1-in-8 statistic.” Hosting car washes, making chemo comfort kits, and sponsoring pink walks at the zoo immerse the chapter in the Waco, Texas, community. The Zetas invite the presidents of 400 student organizations on campus to

participate in Pie a Prez. Students can smash a pie pan full of whipped cream into a president’s face for $3 or buy a can of whipped cream for $15. “We know the potential of our chapter,” Alexandra said. “Our chapter has never faltered in the support of new ideas. We encourage each other to get out of our comfort zones, try new events, and not be afraid to fail.” At Fairleigh Dickinson University, Iota Iota Chapter’s recent Executive Councils have focused on improving the quality and quantity of their members. The “mighty” chapter of 48 members emphasized both passion and engagement during Recruitment. “It all comes down to the women you recruit,” said Gabriella Edwards, Philanthropy Chair on Program Council in 2024. “We looked for women who were passionate and authentic. We are now the largest chapter on campus.”

In 2025, the chapter added the VP Philanthropy & Service position to its EC. Gianna Buscarino was the first to

hold that office, and Iota Iota hosted its first Pink Week and Pink Man competition. “Our campus is a closeknit community,” said Gianna. “Our members have close friends in all five fraternities. We emphasize being engaged in other groups’ events. When we support others, they pay back that respect to us.” Gianna praised her sisters for their impressive 88% increase in fundraising results. “Many of our members joined because we empowered them to make an impact. Our new members are very selfdriven and were especially excited to participate in their first event.”

Alpha Gamma Chapter (University of Michigan) has excelled in fundraising since its recent reorganization. The chapter brought back its Big Man on Campus event in 2024 and hosted a popular late-night dinner, Mac and ZZs, resulting in a 116% growth. The key to that success, said VP Philanthropy & Service Sonia Patel, was passion, engagement, and lots of fun. “I was recruited by the chapter’s [previous] VP Philanthropy & Service,” Sonia said. “The biggest reason I pledged was her passion and the chapter’s engagement. It resonated with me.”

During Pink Week, the chapter’s 232 members paint pumpkins, have a picnic on the lawn, and write letters to and make blankets for survivors. Watching a movie with a powerful female lead together keeps the passion high.

“Both BMOC and Mac and ZZs are mandatory, but we make them fun, not a burden,” Sonia said. “We have prizes and incentives. The members who raise the most on their personal Big Man on Campus CrowdChange pages get to be judges.” Each of these officers believes the personal stories of survivors inspire members to volunteer in the planning and promotion of their events. Iota Chi hosts a Scoops with a Cause ice cream social with a survivor who shares her story and a Pickled in Pink pickleball tournament for survivors. Theta Omicron invites survivors to share their personal stories between performances at BMOC. During its Pink Week, Iota Iota has an intimate candlelight vigil to honor those who have battled breast cancer. A member of Alpha Gamma’s Philanthropy Committee is currently fighting breast cancer; her courage increases the chapter’s passion. EVERY STEP OF THE WAY By Tamela Dickie Beene Gamma Tau, Texas Tech University

Being a Zeta saved my life. Seriously, all those years ago at Texas Tech University (Gamma Tau Chapter), from Bid Day on, it was ingrained in us that being a Zeta means storming the gates of breast cancer to not only fight and save our sisters, but all women. I learned to check my breasts each month using the shower cards we handed out at football games and United Supermarkets, and I have done so monthly ever since. Then, out of nowhere during the summer of 2021, while we were all in a pandemic and I was in the process of ending my 20-year marriage, I found what felt like a Tide POD® in my left breast. A few days later, while standing in line to meet my son’s first-grade teacher, I got the dreaded news that I had Stage 2 breast cancer. My first call was to my fellow Gamma Tau sister and 20-year survivor, Janet Jaeckle Bronocco (picture 3), who went with me the next day to my breast specialist and helped me game plan for surgery. Janet also softened the blow by taking me to our favorite Mexican restaurant for Texas comfort food. While splitting our fajitas and queso, it started to sink in that my life would never be the same, but deep down I also knew my Zisters would support me every step of the way and that I would be okay. They did, and I was. At the time, I was given only a 4% chance of recurrence, but being the well-taught Zeta I am, I still selfchecked my breasts like clockwork. Two years later (surprise!) 1 for ZTA’s 125th anniversary celebration, I was diagnosed with Stage 4 metastatic breast cancer with multiple tumors predominantly in my hip and spine. What I had discounted as a gym injury was actually a right femur fracture; I had been walking around on a broken bone for five months. If you saw me at Longwood, I probably mentioned my hip hurt, but I’m so grateful I got to be there with my favorite Zetas, including my National Officer Big Sister Jessica Eovino Pafford (Eta Lambda, College of Charleston). Five days later, I was blessed with my first hip and femur replacement. I would go on to have two more the following year. Fortunately, I am a Zeta and a true testament to the power of our sisterhood. Our sisters have been with me every step of the way as I learned to walk again and all along my road to remission. The letters, visits, and prayers were constant validation that being a Zeta means you never fight alone. My son, Lochlan (picture 1), remembers sleepovers watching Christmas

3 movies with his aunties with such reverence and joy. Love really is “the greatest of all things,” and Zetas of all ages and across the country proved that to us when Lochlan and I needed them most. In June, in addition to hitting one year in remission, I had the honor of being in the wedding of Janet’s daughter, Meredith Bronocco (Eta Xi, Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University) (picture 2). I was her flower girl, walking their beloved dog down the aisle while wearing heels. It was such a magical moment, and I got to be there, dancing all night with Former National President Keeley McDonald, Janet, and several other Zetas.

TYPES OF

ZTA Foundation Scholarships FOUNDERS GRANTS These $12,500 grants are awarded to graduate students (admitted to recognized graduate programs) who exhibit outstanding leadership, continued participation in ZTA, and exceptional academic achievement.

ENDOWED SCHOLARSHIPS Often given in honor or in memory of a special Zeta, the yearly interest generated from the endowments provides the scholarships, which vary in amount. The minimum donation to create an endowment is $50,000 over three years.

RECOGNITION SCHOLARSHIPS An individual or alumnae/ collegiate chapter may establish a Recognition Scholarship with a minimum contribution of $2,000. The ZTA Foundation provides an additional $500 to the total.

ACHIEVEMENT SCHOLARSHIPS Funded by the ZTA Foundation General Scholarship Fund, Achievement Scholarships are awarded to students who demonstrate active participation in ZTA, leadership, high GPAs, and community involvement.

Collin County, TX Alumnae Chapter BY ALUMNAE CHAPTER PRESIDENT CLAUDIA CALHOUN UPSHAW Nu, The University of Alabama The Collin County, TX Chapter has many members who received ZTA Foundation Recognition Scholarships, which has set the tone for our focus on funding as many scholarships as possible. Our chapter does not have a local collegiate chapter, so funding scholarships is our way of supporting our collegiate sisters and those who are from Collin County at schools outside of our area. We started by funding one scholarship. As our chapter and fundraising efforts have grown over the last 10 years, we have been able to increase that to now fund at least three scholarships each year! We primarily raise funds for our scholarships in two ways: member donations and Study Stash Care Package sales. We have many members who donate directly to our scholarship fund and who take advantage of their company’s charitable giving matching programs to increase their donations. Additionally, we started selling Study Stash Care Packages during the 20122013 fiscal year. These were originally gift bags with snacks, pens, Post-its, and small treats that parents could send their daughters during finals week. We began with Theta Eta Chapter at

Stephen F. Austin State University, and have now extended the offer to the parents of Zetas from three other Texas chapters. We can also ship packages to any Zeta nationwide! This past fall’s care package theme was “Touchdowns & Crowns,” which included a clear game-day purse filled with sunscreen, ChapStick, treats, a Think Pink® ribbon, a notebook with pens and crown paperclips, a ZTA-colored cup, a school pennant, and a personal note to the student. I am so proud to lead this alumnae chapter because of the importance our members place on supporting our collegiate sisters, ZTA Recognition Scholarships, and the ZTA Foundation. Our members and Executive Council officers are always looking for ways we can increase our giving, and funding scholarships and supporting the Foundation has never been a challenge. If anything, the question has always been, “We have a surplus. Eta Tau, The University of North Carolina at Charlotte This scholarship holds tremendous meaning for me as I enter my junior year at The University of North Carolina at Charlotte, pursuing a double major in accounting and finance. I was initially drawn to ZTA because of its commitment to breast cancer education and awareness, a cause close to my heart after witnessing both my mom and my aunt battle the disease. Seeing firsthand how breast cancer can affect one’s womanhood, I have always admired how ZTA goes above and beyond to ensure affected women feel supported, empowered, and beautiful during such challenging times. Not only has ZTA allowed me to continue advocating for women like my mom, but it has also given me invaluable opportunities for personal and professional growth.

Knowing that I wanted to enter the finance and accounting profession, I sought out leadership roles within the chapter that would develop my skills. Starting as Assistant Treasurer, I learned how to manage chapter dues, track transactions, and understand the budgeting process. Transitioning to the role of Vice President Finance deepened my leadership skills, taught me how to handle sensitive topics with empathy, and strengthened my technical abilities. These skills have been directly applicable during my internships. Beyond these skills and experiences, ZTA has given me a community of my best friends who inspire me every day to achieve my goals. This scholarship enables me to stay actively involved in my chapter and continue advocating for the causes and people that matter most to me.

Our busy fall of extension efforts continued with the reestablishment of Zeta Sigma Chapter at The University of Texas at Arlington. While the chapter never officially closed, we paused operations in the spring of 2024 with plans for the national organization to host a fullscale recruitment effort in fall 2025. Founded in 1969, Zeta Sigma has a longstanding history at UTA. A team of collegians from Theta Omicron Chapter (Baylor University) joined Leadership Consultants to participate in the first round of Primary Recruitment and share information about the chapter’s return. In the weeks that followed, a large team of LCs toured campus each day with a wagon full of swag, energy drinks, and snacks for students. Women from every graduating class signed up to learn more about Zeta Tau Alpha. Large LC-led events were held at the chapter house, including a “ZTA is Sodalicious” dirty soda bar, which was sponsored by Swig. When I arrived with the Extension Team and National President Dinah Jackson Laughery in early October, we kicked things off with a reception for more than 50 local alumnae, as well as Vice President Collegiate II Stancy Robinson Hagans, Vice President Housing II Julie Ward Moxley, and Alumnae National Officers Gina Goertzen LeGare and Paislea Wallstein Stolarski. Three recruitment events followed that week: Experience ZTA, held on Founders’ Day; Think Pink® Think Zeta, which focused on our philanthropy; and an invitation-only Preference event, where women were invited to membership in Zeta Tau Alpha. The next day, the chapter’s

Collegiate National Officer, Bailey Ferree Graves, and the LC team hosted a Bid Day celebration for the chapter. Since it was UTA Family Weekend, families joined the newest Zetas for photos, fun, and sweet treats. Over the next five weeks, LCs led the chapter through the Zeta Is Forever New Member Experience. Forty members applied for Executive Council positions and were appointed by CNO Bailey. On Friday, Nov. 21, a team of LCs initiated 53 members and installed the new officers. The next day, a celebratory lunch was held at the UTA Greek Life Community Center, just across the street from the ZTA house. Members, their families, and alumnae enjoyed delicious BBQ and commemorated Zeta Sigma’s return. The chapter then received gifts, including crown rings from the Fraternity and a generous donation from six local alumnae chapters to help the chapter purchase large lawn letters for Recruitment and other chapter events. Mrs. Laughery presented Amanda Perez, Director of Fraternity & Sorority Life at UTA, with a donation to the university’s general scholarship fund on behalf of the ZTA Foundation. Newly appointed chapter President Hailey Cardenas shared some remarks with those in attendance on behalf of her new sisters. “Every conversation I’ve had throughout this process has felt welcoming and familiar, and something about ZTA just clicked for me. It felt like a space where I could grow, belong, and build something truly meaningful with the women around me.”

THE NOBILITY OF SERVING By Teresa Sage, Contributing Writer

A card that reads “The Nobility of Serving” hangs above the desk of Karil Strater Sommers (Alpha Theta, Purdue University). This line from The Creed of Zeta Tau Alpha serves as a daily reminder for Karil and drives her desire to give back to ZTA in a variety of ways with her time, talent, and donations to the ZTA Foundation. Karil’s volunteer service began in 2004, when she took on the role of Recruitment Advisor for Alpha Theta Chapter. “I worked with Alpha Theta for years [in a few different advisory roles], giving my time while I went back to school and had a young family,” Karil said. “I enjoyed giving back, and it grew from there.” Over the years, Karil held numerous positions within the Lafayette, IN Alumnae Chapter and served two terms as Province President 14-A (now known as a Collegiate National

Officer). Karil is now the Harm Reduction Specialist for Beta Phi (Michigan State University) and Zeta Omega (Ferris State University) chapters. “Each opportunity to give back is another chance to impact young women,” she said. “I am fiercely in support of empowering women to be the best version of themselves that they can be.” In her role as Province President, Karil wrote several letters of recommendation for women applying for ZTA Foundation scholarships, and she saw a need. “I wanted to be part of providing women a little relief from the stress of paying for their education,” she said. “When the ability to donate became possible, it was the next logical step that ZTA would be on my list of spaces to give to financially.”

“I knew I wanted to increase my giving, and I knew I wanted it to be for a scholarship,” she said. Karil called her new member class sister Erin Thornburg Hartley, Chief Development Officer at International Office, to get the process started, and the Karil Strater Sommers Recognition Scholarship was created to support the collegians of Province 14-A. Since the 2021-2022 academic year, five collegians from each of the Province 14-A chapters—Alpha Theta (Purdue University), Beta Theta (Franklin College), and Lambda Epsilon (Indiana University Indianapolis)—have received the scholarship. “Through ZTA, I met a lot of women who encouraged and mentored me to believe in myself,” she said. “I feel that it is my responsibility to give back what I can to contribute to the rising leaders in our organization.”

THETA ALPHA FOREVER By Kristel Aranas, Contributing Writer

“Today and Forever” carries deep meaning for Zeta Tau Alpha. Beyond being a beloved song of the Fraternity, it’s a phrase that embodies the love and care that Zetas have for each other. For the sisters of Theta Alpha Chapter at California State University, Chico, which closed in 2004, this phrase was also the inspiration behind the name of the Theta Alpha Forever Endowed Scholarship, for which alumnae sisters raised a staggering $50,000 in just under three months in honor of the 50th anniversary of their chapter’s founding. “The chapter may not be around, but the members still are,” Theta Alpha sisters Liz Bozek Krohn and Andrea Warner Molinari said. Raising this scholarship money required a massive group effort, and Liz and Andrea led the charge. “Liz knew all the donors who might help us start this effort,” Andrea shared. “And Andrea was our quarterback; she knew how to inspire women to donate!” Liz added. A true pair, Liz and Andrea have known 26 Themis Winter 2026 | Scholarship

each other for a long time—Liz was Andrea’s collegiate advisor, and now, they’re intergenerational besties. “She’s the Omega to my Alpha,” Liz said proudly. It was the generosity of their sisters, however, that really made the achievement possible. The women of Theta Alpha had sponsored ZTA Foundation scholarships before, but for this endeavor, it was all-hands-on-deck. Bolstered by the support of the Foundation, they began with a goal of 50 alumnae contributing $1,000. It wasn’t long before they realized that their sisters were truly energized to contribute, often matching each other’s donations. They also gave their time and energy. They organized raffles, started fundraisers, and created baskets. To encourage chapter alumnae even further, they made a big push by showcasing all the contributors at their latest reunion, a tradition they started after the closure of their chapter.

“Over 120 people came from all parts of the country,” they recalled of the first reunion. For Theta Alpha, getting together after that time was important. While the closure of their chapter meant there would be no new Theta Alphas, their mindset shifted to focus on the sisters they do have. “Our friendship never closed,” Andrea emphasized. “We couldn’t stand to be apart from each other!” To this day, the women of Theta Alpha make a real effort to bond, whether celebrating life milestones, organizing annual new member class gatherings, or vacationing together. With such a strong sisterhood, the women wanted to pay it forward. Knowing the effect a ZTA Foundation scholarship can have on a student, it felt like the right way to commemorate their chapter’s 50th anniversary. For Andrea, “It doesn’t feel real; this is going to be around forever and outlast all of us.” Liz feels the same, “It makes you feel like you’ll be immortal—it’s a legacy we’ll have forever.”

Meet a Member of the Squad

Jen Botchie Deinlein (Iota Nu, Susquehanna University) has been a member of Maud Squad since it began in 2017, and to say she is “actively involved” in ZTA is an understatement! She is the General Advisor for Iota Nu Chapter and has held several advisory roles for nearly 20 years. She has served on the Executive Councils of multiple alumnae chapters. She also chaired PA/WV Zeta Day in 2015, has served as a Day of Giving Ambassador, and was a Key Woman for several years. She shared a bit about her connection to ZTA and why she chooses to donate through Maud Squad. TELL US A BIT ABOUT YOUR ZTA JOURNEY. I am a Special Initiate! I did not go through recruitment in college, but my younger sister followed me to Susquehanna University and joined ZTA. I returned to SU about five years after graduation to coach cheerleading, and a few years later, when the chapter needed an advisor, one of my cheerleaders thought I’d be a good fit. Fun fact: My biological little sister is my ZTA Big Sister! WHAT MOTIVATES YOU TO GIVE TO ZTA? Our philanthropy is so important, but the ZTA Foundation also supports so many opportunities for sisters to learn and grow. I attended an advisor academy early in my time as an advisor, and I learned so much there and connected with sisters I still look to today. I’ve also seen collegians benefit from educational programs and earn scholarships, and I am happy to help support that, too. WHY DID YOU JOIN MAUD SQUAD? Maud Squad was really the right opportunity at the right time. The monthly recurring donation is so easy to do, and as a mom to two very busy kids, it’s nice to have one thing checked off the to-do list! WHAT ADVICE DO YOU HAVE FOR POTENTIAL FIRST-TIME DONORS? I always encourage my younger ZTA sisters, especially when they are graduating or have recently graduated, to join Maud Squad. It’s easy, and it’s an amount that’s not daunting when you’re just starting out and paying back loans or dealing with other expenses. The important part, to me, is realizing that a donation doesn’t have to be a huge amount all at once to be helpful. That $9 every month adds up and really does have a bigger impact than you would think.

Partners in Pin By Christy Marx Barber, Contributing Writer Zeta Tau Alpha members most likely know the ZTA Foundation has donated $1.75 million to the Breast Cancer Research Foundation since 2022. However, they may not know BCRF is the largest private funder of breast cancer research in the world, providing $74.75 million to 260 researchers worldwide in 2025-2026. In October 2025, the ZTA Foundation had the opportunity to expand and enhance this exceptional partnership, tapping into the passion of ZTA members to raise awareness of not only breast cancer but also the impact of BCRF in the quest for prevention and treatment options.

“We’ve been working with BCRF to explore new ways to reach broader audiences to raise awareness and support vital research,” said ZTA Foundation Vice President of Philanthropy Marlene Dunbar Conrad. “This year, that collaboration has focused on finding opportunities to distribute our Think Pink® ribbons while also highlighting the exceptional work BCRF is doing.”

On the first day of Breast Cancer Awareness Month, BCRF transformed Vanderbilt Hall in New York City’s Grand Central Terminal into an interactive experience (pictured below). ZTA alumnae from New York and New Jersey and collegians from Lambda Theta (New York University) and Lambda Xi (Seton Hall University) chapters handed out 20,000 pink ribbons inside and around the station. On the busy sidewalk, by chance, they met three parents of ZTA collegians and invited them to learn more about the partnership and fill out a postcard thanking a researcher.

The culmination of this effort during Breast Cancer Awareness Month was BCRF’s annual donor luncheon in New York City on Oct. 30 (pictured top right). Members of the ZTA Foundation board—President Carolyn Hof Carpenter, Vice President of Collegiate Development Carla Martin Cobb, Vice President of Scholarship Kristen Humeston Harthorn, Director Becky Hainsworth Kirwan, and Mrs. Conrad—attended the prestigious event, along with ZTA National President Dinah Jackson Laughery, Chief Executive Officer Meghan Vicinus Parker, and Chief Development Officer Erin Thornburg Hartley. ZTA was among the donors thanked by BCRF in a full-page advertisement in that day’s edition of the New York Times.

In early October, the Foundation sent 18,000 postcards—co-branded with ZTA and BCRF logos—to collegiate chapters and encouraged them to host a sisterhood event or take a break during a chapter meeting for members to write postcards to their

KnitWell Group, which owns LOFT and is another BCRF partner, matched the day’s donations to BCRF up to $50,000.

Before lunch, the ZTA leaders attended panel discussions by BCRF-funded researchers. “We heard from scientists conducting cutting-edge research,” Mrs. Conrad said. “These researchers truly value BCRF because they know they can rely on the organization to deliver the funding promised so that their work can continue. nk Later, the ZTA attendees enjoyed lunch with Dr. Graham Colditz, MD/PhD, an Australian chronic disease epidemiologist working at Washington University School of Medicine in St. Louis. Dr. Colditz, who is one of the two researchers the ZTA Foundation is currently funding, is the creator of the most successful cancer risk assessment tool to date. The week of the luncheon, ZTA sent all members a link to an exclusive video interview with Dr. Colditz. In it, he shared his personal connection to breast cancer prevention, discussed how diet and lifestyle can support prevention, and gave specific insight into changes that can reduce risk. “Dr. Colditz is delightful,” Mrs. Conrad said. “He was so pleased to make that video for us and so happy we shared it with all our members. It is in video format, but it is very conversational. I would encourage members to treat it like a podcast and listen to it while exercising or making dinner.” These new partnership events put a spotlight on ZTA’s commitment to service and philanthropy to an expanding audience. “The entire month, across the country, ZTA and BCRF showcased our collaboration and commitment,” Mrs. Conrad said. “We are excited to see the results of the projects we are funding and to grow our partnership with BCRF in the future.”

Sarah Tabat sat down to talk with one of the members of the Zeta Tau Alpha Heritage Society to discuss sisterhood, service, and leaving a legacy. When I first talked with Karen Schmitt Roberts (Beta Psi, Stetson University), a proud member of the Heritage Society, her love for ZTA was immediately clear. The Heritage Society recognizes sisters who have chosen to leave a planned gift to the ZTA Foundation. It’s a way to ensure the Foundation’s mission continues for generations to come. Karen joined Beta Psi Chapter in 1977, drawn in by the warmth and authenticity of her soon-to-be sisters. “ZTA has been a large part of my life since college,” she shared. It’s one of the most impactful things that has guided her throughout her life, and she doesn’t take that for granted. “ZTA is a gift. We’ve been given the gift of sisterhood.” Now preparing to celebrate her 45th reunion as a Stetson graduate and looking ahead to her ZTA White Violet ceremony in 2027, Karen’s connection to ZTA and her sisters remains as strong as ever. Through her planned gift, she is leaving a tangible legacy of sisterhood. “When people think about a legacy, or something that helps to define them, they think about what has been important to them and guided them. 46 Themis Winter 2026 | Why I Give

For me, ZTA and my university have been those two things,” she reflected. Karen’s definition of legacy reaches beyond financial generosity. “If one is lucky enough to give financially, that’s wonderful,” she said. “But there are other types of legacies— living The Creed, mentoring women, and being kind to others. Those are what matter most.”

A legacy is not what is left tomorrow when you are gone. It’s what you give, create, impact, and contribute today while you are here that then happens to live on.

When asked what she would tell others considering a planned gift, her answer was both simple and heartfelt: “Understand the importance of it,” she said. “ZTA has played a role in your life; it is a way to give back.” She reiterated, “No gift is too small.” As our conversation wrapped up, Karen added one last reflection that has stayed with me. “ZTA lasts a lifetime, but leaving a gift is a way to continue past your lifetime into somebody else’s in a positive manner.” Through her generosity, service, and heart, Karen is ensuring that her legacy will continue to inspire for generations to come.

Zeta Tau Alpha Fraternity Housing Corporation facilities are the perfect place for our collegiate chapters to host philanthropy events throughout October and all year round. From crafting cards for breast cancer survivors to feeding the campus community pink pancakes, these collegians make the most of their space in support of breast cancer education and awareness.

SISTERHOOD EXTENDS BEYOND RIVALRY By Katie Jones, Contributing Writer

In Alabama, the rivalry between The University of Alabama and Auburn runs deep. It is woven into family ties, friendly debates, and generations of pride. With that kind of history, imagine how you would feel if you received a scholarship from your rival. For Tori Schultz (Gamma Rho, Auburn University), she is simply grateful. Tori (pictured right and top center) is this year’s recipient of the Team Nu Endowment Scholarship, which was established in 2021 by Leah Ann McAbee Sexton (Nu, The University of Alabama) to honor four current and former alumnae advisors and National Officers who support Nu Chapter. They are (pictured bottom left, with Leah Ann): Anne Marie Patton Binder (Gamma Rho), Lynn Compton Chapman (Alpha Nu, Birmingham-Southern College), Ashley Menzel Amoss (Delta Kappa, Louisiana State University), and (pictured bottom center, with Leah Ann) Katy Fluhr Carlsward (Gamma Beta, Washington College). Because the scholarship celebrates alumnae from different collegiate chapters, eligibility extends beyond Nu Chapter to also include members of those chapters. Leah Ann wanted to recognize her fellow volunteers because “it takes all of us to help develop our members into quality women.” According to Leah Ann, “these women have used their talents to make the chapter better. They are from different decades, schools, and lifestyles, but it works because of the common thread of being [sisters].” 50 Themis Winter 2026 | Scholarship Profile

That sentiment doesn’t stop with the alumnae. Tori used her talents in her role as Gamma Rho’s chapter President. “Being President showed me that it’s not about your title,” she said. “It’s about how you’re able to empower and inspire people.” Tori said that role was her most challenging leadership position, but it’s also where she experienced the most growth. Before serving as President, Tori was Vice President Academic Achievement, a position that exemplified her favorite Key Value, Lifelong Learning. “I wouldn’t have gotten the opportunity to [go] to Auburn and be a part of a sorority if it wasn’t for my academics,” she said. For Tori, receiving this scholarship “reaffirmed that ZTA and I have similar values. I get to go into the next chapter of my life with confidence and with the full support of my sisters and the Fraternity at large.” That feeling of support means that receiving a

scholarship from her rival university feels anything but antagonistic. While on the football field, Auburn and Alabama may have their differences, but “at the end of the day, we’re all the same. Even though we have this rivalry, I still find so much joy in interacting with sisters from other chapters,” Tori said. Leah Ann hopes the scholarship is an inspiration for women to continue working together and lifting each other to succeed. In Tori’s case, that hope rings true. “It is extremely rewarding to see how much ZTA has invested in me,” she said. “I hope that as I become an alumna, I’m able to continue giving back to this organization that’s impacted me so much.” While members on both sides of this scholarship may be committed to the rivalry on the football field, off the field, it is nothing but Zeta Love and gratitude for the ties that bind these sisters together.

Members came together for a funfilled cornhole tournament, delicious cookies, exclusive ZTA T-shirts, and raffle baskets. From the friendly competition to the sweet treats, every moment helped raise funds and spread awareness for a cause close to sisters’ hearts. ALPHA ZETA The Ohio State University Sisters partnered with the Columbus, OH Alumnae Chapter to participate in the local Making Strides Against Breast Cancer® walk. They walked through downtown Columbus with survivors, thrivers, families, and community members to raise awareness, honor those affected, and celebrate a day of sisterhood. On Miami University’s campus, both ZTA and Sigma Lambda Gamma, an organization in the Multicultural Greek Council, support breast cancer awareness. It seemed only natural that the two chapters would join forces to raise money for the cause

DELTA PI Eastern New Mexico University This chapter partnered with Roosevelt General Hospital and the university’s athletic department for a Pink Out homecoming game. Sisters sold shirts with logos of all three organizations and decorated the student and band sections with pink streamers and ribbons. [3] DELTA PSI Samford University Members gathered to hear a breast cancer survivor share her inspiring story. Sisters left encouraged and motivated to continue raising funds for the research that helped this woman overcome her battle with breast cancer. ETA ALPHA Georgia Southwestern State University Chapter sisters, campus fraternities, and students came together to write letters of encouragement and make goody bags for the oncology patients at the Phoebe Cancer Center. ETA EPSILON Mansfield University of Pennsylvania This chapter’s annual Big Man on Campus was a success! Candidates participated in ZTA trivia, a talent show, and other competitions. As part of the event, a speaker talked about her experience with breast cancer and inspired everyone in the crowd.

In October, sisters volunteered at the local MSABC® walk. Chapter members helped run the check-in booth, welcomed participants, and met survivors and thrivers who shared their inspiring stories. Cheering on walkers at the starting line was a powerful reminder of the strength, hope, and unity that drive this cause.

GAMMA ALPHA University of Miami

IOTA PHI North Carolina State University

In partnership with the university football team, this chapter hosted the Titans Tackle Breast Cancer game, which united the campus and community in the fight against breast cancer. The event featured educational materials on risk factors and warning signs, a photo booth, a bake sale, T-shirt sales, and a pinkout station. Everything promoted awareness of ZTA’s philanthropy.

Chapter sisters hosted a ceremony to raise awareness for our philanthropy by turning the Lake Osceola fountain pink for the month of October. The event featured impactful speeches from oncologists and members who shared stories of their mothers’ battles with cancer. The chapter also recognized six scholarship recipients for their dedication and strength.

The chapter hosted an educational event with a local nonprofit, The Young Breast Cancer Project. The organization gave a breast health presentation and taught sisters how to do self-exams. Presenters brought breast models with lump imitations and educated everyone on the warning signs and symptoms.

KAPPA CHI Shorter University

This chapter participated in the local MSABC® walk to raise awareness for our philanthropy. By walking together, sisters showed their dedication, support, and love for survivors, thrivers, and their families. Members enjoyed the active and inspiring day with one another.

Students at Shorter University awoke one day in October to discover that the entire campus had been covered in pink, with Think Pink® banners on the gates and a flock of lawn flamingos in the Front Circle. Students and faculty were delighted by the surprise and enjoyed the pink decor that marked the beginning of the chapter’s Pink Week.

KAPPA NU Monmouth University The chapter held its first Big Man on Campus event since returning to campus. Local alumnae were in attendance, and a chapter alumna shared her personal breast cancer story. They also held their first tabling event, where sisters sold pink lemonade and gave candy to those who played breast cancer trivia. KAPPA ZETA Clemson University During this chapter’s signature philanthropy event, Big Man on Campus, male representatives from campus organizations showcased their talent, enthusiasm, and school spirit to support ZTA’s philanthropy. This annual fundraiser continues to show the community’s generosity and commitment to making an impact in the fight against breast cancer.

Sisters came together to make 15 Crock-Pots of queso, guacamole, and salsa, which were sold to students, faculty, and staff at Queso for a Cause. Members served food, collected donations, and engaged with the community. The event was a fun and delicious way to raise funds for breast cancer education and awareness.

To kick off October, these sisters teamed up with the members of Alpha Tau Omega Fraternity to host their annual BBQ for Breast Cancer. More than 800 people attended and enjoyed tasty food while supporting our philanthropy.

During its Pink Out Week, this chapter held a Berry Bash, which included pink pancakes with strawberries and chocolate-covered strawberry cups. Participants also had the chance to win raffle baskets and shop with a permanent jewelry vendor on site.

LAMBDA KAPPA Appalachian State University

In support of Breast Cancer Awareness Month, sisters proudly participated in the MSABC® walk in San Francisco, where they walked the Golden Gate Bridge with survivors, thrivers, and others affected by breast cancer.

As the main event of their Think Pink® Week, members of this chapter hosted a 5K color run at the Boone Greenway Trail near campus. Sisters had a fun and memorable experience cheering on participants. It was also a great way for members to interact with the local community. LAMBDA UPSILON University of Wisconsin - Madison At this chapter’s annual Rose Quartz Gala, attendees raised money by participating in a silent auction and shopping for Kendra Scott jewelry. A special guest speaker also shared her breast cancer journey with the chapter. This event is a favorite for many members because it brings the entire chapter together to rally around ZTA’s philanthropy.

Sisters hosted Zonk-A-Zeta, a philanthropy event in which students and faculty paid to pie or splash chapter members. The laughter-filled afternoon brought the campus community together in support of breast cancer education and awareness. It was a wonderful reminder that giving back can be both impactful and fun.

The chapter’s annual Think Pink® Week was full of fundraisers. Members sold baked goods, hosted a table at a Pink Out volleyball game, held a pickleball tournament, and invited community members to Piea-Zeta at a football game.

ZETA XI Georgia Southern University Tackle for a Cure had sisters tabling and distributing Think Pink® ribbons at a football game on campus. The chapter made a big impact by handing out more than 5,000 ribbons!

Sisters honored survivors and thrivers, including a member who was diagnosed this year, as part of the Crucial Catch game for the Los Angeles Chargers. FLORIDA Jacksonville Alumnae sisters joined forces with collegians outside of EverBank Stadium to distribute pink ribbons for the Jaguars’ Crucial Catch game. Before the game, alumnae also pinked out Intuition Ale Works by distributing more than 2,000 ribbons to fans on their way to the stadium. Tampa This chapter was proud to host this year’s MSABC® walk at Raymond James Stadium. Sisters supported the survivors and thrivers in attendance. GEORGIA [3] Augusta Members volunteered at the 25th annual Miracle Mile Walk, the region’s largest and longest-running breast cancer event. The fundraiser supports a local breast health service center’s mobile mammography unit, which provides life-saving screenings to women in the community regardless of their ability to pay. Gwinnett County, Gainesville, and North Fulton Link Members of these alumnae chapters, along with collegians from Omicron Chapter (Brenau University), participated in the 10th Annual Paint Gwinnett Pink event hosted by Northside Hospital. Sisters raised awareness, passed out pink ribbons, and participated in the 5K.

Savannah Alumnae participated in the Blues, Brews, BBQ, & Bourbon Festival by hosting a raffle for baskets from local businesses. Sisters distributed Think Pink® ribbons and partnered with Sutter Home for Hope, a program that supports breast cancer education and awareness in the community. KENTUCKY Louisville Alumnae and collegians from Beta Lambda Chapter (University of Louisville) attended the local MSABC® walk and helped in the Survivor’s Tent. The women engaged in conversation with survivors and thrivers, cheered on the walkers, and helped participants make bead bracelets. MARYLAND Baltimore City, Annapolis, and Northern Maryland Alumnae from these chapters joined collegians from Iota Delta Chapter (Towson University) at the MSABC® walk in Baltimore. Sisters brought glitz and glam to the event while showing support and raising awareness for a great cause. MICHIGAN Ann Arbor Alpha Gamma Chapter (University of Michigan) invited alumnae to the chapter house for a Pink Paint and Sip event. Together, they painted

This chapter hosted a two-day pop-up clothing and accessories resale event. Promotional posters gave information about ZTA’s philanthropy and provided breast cancer facts and recommendations.

Alumnae hosted a Pilates for Pink event. Attendees enjoyed a private reformer class, food, games, and a raffle. After the class, the Zetas were joined by studio members to honor Breast Cancer Awareness Month.

Sisters enjoyed volunteering in the Survivor’s Tent at a local MSABC® walk. They partnered with collegians from Kappa Mu Chapter (Linfield University) to get survivors and thrivers registered and to hand out information cards and pink ribbons.
