ABSOLUTELY’S October issue highlights

always look forward to October. Our summers are becoming too hot, so the onset of autumn is always a welcome relief to me (and my black-haired dog). But it's also exciting for another reason: the return of the Wildlife Photographer of the Year. We have to wait a little while until the amazing snapshots of the wildlife world come to Tring's Natural History Museum, but if you have no patience, it's well worth taking a trip into London to the sister site and take in some truly awe-inspiring images. It shows the power of photography from across the globe, but also makes you realise what wonders we have on our planet – and why we should do everything we can to look after it. It's why I didn't need to be asked twice to take a visit to Hertfordshire Zoo for this issue. It has recently been named one of the world's top cultural attractions and it's easy to see why – but what also stands out is their commitment to conservation and offering the best life possible to their animal guests. I chatted to the managing director, Tyler Whitnall, who has a real in-depth knowledge of life at the zoo – after all, he grew up there. October is also the time when our Absolutely Home special returns, so inside we have plenty of autumnal inspiration to add that cosy factor to your interiors. I think my dog is eyeing up a new bed as I type this...

ANIMAL MAGIC

As it’s named as one of the world’s top cultural attractions, Hertfordshire Zoo’s Tyler Whitnall explains the bigger picture of its operation

Does that buzz of visiting a properly run zoo ever leave you? I loved visiting various animal sanctuaries as a kid, and even as an adult get that frisson of excitement when something new is announced, from exotic animals to advances in technology. Lucky, then, that we have the very best right on the doorstep – and the wider world seems to agree, considering TripAdvisor has announced it as in the top 10% of 'things to do' across the globe. “It’s amazing,” says Managing Director Tyler Whitnall. “especially because it’s based on what our visitors think. It’s a real testament to the team’s hard work and passion, we’re really grateful for all the support, it means a lot.

“The zoo has pretty much been my whole life,” he smiles. “I grew up living onsite at the zoo – I literally had lemurs and tigers outside my bedroom window. My grandparents bought what was then Broxbourne Zoo, which at the time had a pretty bad reputation, and they had the vision and passion to turn it around.

“My mum and dad carried that on and took it to the next level, so I had amazing role models to look up to,” he continues.

“As kids, my brothers and I were lucky enough to travel and see animals in the wild, as well as the conservation work being done to protect them. Now I get to work alongside my wife, my brothers, and an incredible team who all go above and beyond every day. And the best bit? My little

"I GREW UP LIVING ONSITE AT THE ZOO. I LITERALLY HAD LEMURS AND TIGERS OUTSIDE MY BEDROOM WINDOW"

boy Alfie – he’s only 21 months – is growing up surrounded by wildlife just like I did.” I recently chatted to someone who didn’t agree with zoos, believing all animals should be in their natural habitat, but I responded by saying that they needed to visit Hertfordshire Zoo. The care taken with each and every animal is admirable and heart-warming. “It all starts with a lot of planning and paperwork,” Tyler explains about how they introduce a new animal to the public. “Before they even arrive, we make sure their new home is ready and perfect for their needs, the team are trained and ready to work with a species. When the animal arrives, they go through a quarantine period so we can check they’re healthy and settling in well. We take introductions to other animals slowly and on their terms. Then we try and undergo habituation periods where we observe their behaviours in advance of the habitat opening to the general public to ensure the animal is settled and feels safe and calm.

“It’s all about knowing each animal as an individual,” Tyler adds. “Our keepers are incredibly dedicated and spend a lot of time creating tailored care plans for the

"YOU PROTECT WHAT YOU LOVE, AND OUR AIM IS TO HELP PEOPLE FALL IN LOVE WITH WILDLIFE"

species diets, exercise, enrichment and social time. We watch their behaviour closely; if something’s not right, we change things up straight away. The zoo/animal community is very open with lots of groups and forums where you can liaise with other keepers, vets and animal care specialists to constantly improve the way we care for animals. We want every animal to be able to do what they’d naturally do in the wild such as climb, forage, explore, play etc. That means building habitats with lots of variety, adding new scents and objects and creating puzzles or challenges to keep their minds active.”

Does Tyler have a ‘favourite’ animal?

“Growing up it was a beautiful and very large tiger called Rocky, who was literally a gentle giant. He had a very calm demeanour and looked after other tiger companions over the years. Anyone who visited or worked here while Rocky was around will know exactly what I mean.”

Hertfordshire Zoo is a stand out cultural attraction, but their work looks at the bigger picture too. “We fund and support projects all over the world,” Tyler explains about their conservation efforts, “from donating funds and equipment to sending ourselves and our team into the field to support hands on with conservation efforts or even animal rescue projects, such as the recent rescue and rehoming of wild cats we did this year. We also take part in breeding programmes for endangered species to keep healthy, genetically diverse populations. Conservation is essential and the main reason we all work

hard to make the zoo the best it can be, so that we can keep improving our conservation work in the UK and around the world.

“We’re proud to be part of breeding programmes for several endangered species here at the zoo, and we’re committed to supporting those,” Tyler adds. “Personally, I think it would be incredible if we could successfully breed our sun bears one day, that would be such a milestone for us. A lot of people also don’t realise we also run a sister charity, The Big Cat Sanctuary, based in Kent, which our family has been running for 25 years this year. It specialises in both big and small cat species and the work there is incredible. Recently, they rescued five lions from war-torn Ukraine and gave them a safe, forever home. A bit like the zoo, we have lots of incredible developments and aspirations coming up over the coming years.

“You protect what you love, so our aim is to help people fall in love with wildlife. Keeper talks, school trips, interactive displays and, of course, those magical upclose moments that stay with you forever. That’s often where a lifelong passion for animals starts. Our motto is to 'Share the Wonder of Wildlife' with all our visitors and supporters. Our aim is to be one of the leading zoos in the UK, a place known for conservation, education, sustainability, and unforgettable visitor experiences.” Judging by recent recognition, they are well on the way to achieving it.

CHILL in the air

Absolutely explores some of the most haunted spots in Hertfordshire, then prepares for five events to make the most of Halloween

Hertfordshire’s haunted tapestry weaves together official landmarks, whispered lore, and immersive modern events. From the ill-fated “Wicked Lady” galloping across country roads to flickering apparitions in centuries-old churches and castles, the county is steeped in unsettling stories.

The

Wicked Lady – Katherine Ferrers, Wheathampstead

Legend has it that Lady Katherine Ferrers (1634-1660), a member of the Ferrers family, became the infamous “Wicked Lady” – a highwaywoman preying on travellers at the nearby ford. Rumour persists that her ghost still roams the area: a lady in riding boots, spurs clinking, her face veiled in shadow as she hurries across the bridges near Brooke and Wheathampstead. Despite sparse historical evidence, local lore and the aura of tragedy continue to fuel fascination.

Knebworth House –

The Radiant Boy

The striking Tudor Gothic mansion is reputed to be haunted by the “Radiant Boy”. Sightings have been reported in one demolished wing of the original house, though the apparition still seems tied to the property, often appearing to members of the Lytton family. The boy’s glowing presence and inexplicable laughter have woven themselves into the fabric of Knebworth’s haunted legacy.

Hatfield House –

The Ghost of Elizabeth I

Within the Old Palace section attached to Hatfield House, Queen Elizabeth I is said to make spectral appearances –some visitors claim to feel her presence or glimpse her figure moving between

rooms. While partly a product of the area’s royal history, these stories capture the imagination and contribute to Hatfield’s haunted atmosphere.

This high-intensity, immersive horror event brings scare mazes, theatrical performances, and tension-thickened strolls – all designed to unsettle even the bravest visitors. It’s the largest of its kind in the county, promising thrills for teens and adults.

Knebworth House –Halloween Adventure

St Albans Cathedral –A Haunting Presence

St Albans Cathedral, one of Britain’s oldest sanctuaries, carries whispers of ghostly activity. Legends include spectral figures in the shadows, an eerie chill in certain halls, and unexplained flickers of light. The cathedral’s ancient bones and spiritual energy make it a ripe site for haunting tales.

Hertford Castle –“Within These Walls”

While not traditionally haunted, Hertford Castle hosts “Within These Walls” guided tours that tap into the castle’s storied past – including ghostly myths like “Figure in Black”, “Blind George”, and “Woman on the Stairs”. The evening ambiance and lingering echoes of medieval days make it a perfect setting for whispered tales.

Set in the beautiful gardens of Knebworth House over 28th-30th October, these family-friendly morning sessions (9.30am-12.30pm) offer pumpkin-themed crafts, fun trails, and mild spookiness suitable for younger children.

Willows Activity Farm –Pumpkin Festival

Running weekends from 11th-12th, 18th19th, and daily from 24th-31st October, this delightful festival invites families to pick from thousands of Willows pumpkins, enjoy pumpkin hunts, and participate in festive farmyard fun.

Halloween Haunted Hertford – Children’s Ghost Walk

On Sunday 27th October, guided ghost walks provide a spooky but family-friendly experience through the old streets of Hertford. With children’s tickets priced at about £4.50 and adults around £8, it’s both accessible and atmospheric.

Exploring Hertfordshire’s vineyards, luxury accommodations and drinking destinations

PHOTO: THE GROVE

It’s Hertfordshire’s best kept secret, so we’re here to tell you all about the sprawling vineyards that are right on your doorstep, as well as the best places to go for a drink (or two) that will give you the perfect, relaxing setting to sit back and sip. We’ve also included our top suggestions on where to stay the night after your day of soaking in not only the views, but the tipples too.

HAZEL END

Meet one of Hertfordshire’s oldest vineyards. Family-run since 1976, Hazel End is all about tradition, passion, and seriously good wine. Nestled just outside Bishop’s Stortford, this charming spot is a celebration of English winemaking, producing awardwinning still and sparkling wines that showcase the best of the region.

Stay the night

Looking to nestle down for the night?

We’ve got you. Down Hall Hotel & Spa is just a short taxi journey away. If the sun is still shining then head to The Terrace for beautiful garden views, luscious cocktails and a bite to eat, before staying the night in the comfort of one of their luxury rooms.

LOKKELEBERY

A newer addition to the Hertfordshire wine scene is Lokkelebery Vineyard, nestled just outside Tring. Established in 2022, this boutique vineyard places family, farming, and heritage at the heart of everything. Take to the vines for a Vineyard Wine Safari & Tour where you can experience their favourite wines from around the world.

Stay the night

After a busy day touring the vineyard at Lokkelebery, we suggest taking a short 10-minute taxi drive to Brocket Hall. Choose from 16 luxury en-suite bedrooms in the Melbourne Lodge, boasting picturesque views of the Hall, Broadwater Lake and The Melbourne Club golf course.

FOUR ACRES ESTATE

Dreaming of wine country vibes on your doorstep? Four Acres Estate is just the ticket. Set in the stunning East Herts countryside on a hillside above the Ash Valley in Little Hadham, you’ll find this family-run vineyard, orchard, and winery where English tradition meets handcrafted fizz and cider. Since planting in 2012 and producing its first vintages in 2016, owner Platon Loizou, along with his wife Sharron and their sons, has nurtured each vine and apple tree, aged sparkling wines and ciders for 18 months and poured real passion into every bottle. Visits to the estate are by appointment only, offering you a private, intimate tour of the vineyard and winery experience, perfect for soaking up the history, handiwork, and heart behind every sparkling sip.

Stay the night

After a day of sipping sparkling wine and soaking up vineyard views, why not make a night of it? Just a short drive away, Hanbury Manor Hotel & Spa offers the perfect mix of country house charm and five-star indulgence. Set within 200 acres of Hertfordshire parkland, this elegant retreat pairs luxurious rooms with fine dining, an award-winning spa, and even a championship golf course. So, you can swap grapevines for green lawns and wake up feeling utterly refreshed.

DRINKING DESTINATIONS

So, vineyard visits, tick! Overnight retreats, tick! Now, let’s take a look at our top suggestions on where to go for a glass of your go-to drink…

LUSSMANNS BRASSERIE

With five Lussmanns Restaurants dotted around the county, there’s bound to be one right on your doorstep. Lussmanns Sustainable Brasseries are ready to welcome you for a relaxing al fresco experience, whether you’re in search of a serene garden terrace or a leafy courtyard to sip something chilled.

PUDDINGSTONE DISTILLERY

Puddingstone Distillery located in Tring, is home to the award-winning Campfire Gin. Set within a charming farm-shop complex, the open-plan distillery shop invites you to wander in on Fridays and Saturdays for free gin and vodka tastings. Or, if you fancy sprucing up your knowledge on the history of gin, why not opt for their Distillery Tour, which includes two gin cocktails from their Campfire Gin menu, gin samples and your very own branded Puddingstone Distillery gin glass to take home.

THE STABLES RESTAURANT

The Stables Restaurant at The Grove combines modern British dining with laidback countryside elegance. Menus celebrate seasonal, local produce, much of it from the estate’s own Jemima’s Kitchen Garden. It is the perfect spot to sip a drink while soaking up sweeping golf course views.

Glow Up

Some rosés are blushing – this one is glowing. The newly released 2023 vintage of Yotes Court’s ‘Best Turned Out’ Pinot Meunier Rosé is a sunsoaked stunner bursting with rose petals, raspberries, and a whisper of rhubarb. Born from a standout vintage, it’s Provence in spirit, Kent at heart, and perfect for prolonging that golden-hour feeling. yotescourt.co.uk

Orange Alert

Perched on the coast near Winchelsea in East Sussex, Charles Palmer Vineyard is a family-run a air with a flair for the elegant and a serious obsession with great wine. Owned and operated by the Palmer family since 1998, the estate makes the most of its southfacing slopes, sea-kissed air, and Kimmeridgian clay soils (the same stu found in Champagne and Chablis). With a hands-on approach and meticulous attention to detail, they’ve built a name for producing refined English fizz and characterful still wines. And now, they’ve thrown something a little zestier into the mix: their first-ever orange wine.

Made from Chardonnay cold-soaked on its skins for 80 hours, it’s gloriously amber in the glass with melon, apricot, and bruised apple on the nose, and flavours of orange peel, honey, and hazelnut on the palate. Bold, textural, and full of autumnal charm, it’s best served lightly chilled. Whether you're grazing on charcuterie, tucking into strong cheeses, or settling in for a cosy night on the sofa, consider this your new cold-weather pour.

Are you sitting comfortably? If not, Back in Action can help

HOW MUCH IS IT WORTH TO LOSE YOUR BACK PAIN?

That’s an intriguing question, isn’t it? Many would pay a small fortune if they knew for certain that a solution would finally work.

According to ergonomic experts at Back In Action, over 80% of their clients experience youthful movement again, with less pain, enabling them to continue with work and enjoy their favourite sports.

functional and beautiful. They believe that furniture should enhance any home or office without compromising style.

Over 80% is quite a claim, but customers have voted them Number One in the UK for four consecutive years. As a family business, they take immense pride in this achievement. If you suffer from back pain, it’s time to visit their website or one of their stores.

Founder David Newbound notes that many clients arrive at Back In Action having lost hope of permanent relief.

“Most pain can be fixed by rest and skilled treatment,” David explains. “However, we often see clients who have been referred by practitioners when progress has stalled. They may have tried various treatments, painkillers, and even switched mattresses, yet they still suffer pain and feel increasingly demoralised.”

SPEND A LITTLE, GAIN A LOT?

Many clients find themselves surprised by the aesthetic appeal of Back In Action’s showrooms, resembling design-led furniture stores. This is intentional: Back In Action sources designs that are both

WHERE DO THE HEALTH BENEFITS COME FROM?

With a name like Back In Action, it’s no surprise they emphasise movement – getting your spine moving and getting you and your back back into action. A SOLUTION FOR EVERYONE

Think your spine is beyond help? Back In Action has developed an innovative method to rejuvenate spinal movement: The Mobiliser. It has gained MOD medical approval and received accolades from thousands who claim it has transformed their lives. FITNESS NOTES

LIFT OFF

Carly Glendinning gets serious about weight lifting with personal trainer, Charlotte Dunn

The weights area in my gym is definitely no longer a totally male-dominated area, but for some reason I still felt intimidated. Blame it on being a Millennial (yawn!), but the mere thought of being 'mansplained' or o ered help to move the bench was enough to put me o . The time had come, however, to take my weight lifting to the next level, so I decided to enlist personal trainer Charlotte Dunn to work with me on my confidence. Super warm and genuinely lovely to work with, Charlotte specialises in creating 1:1 training programmes. She blends a variety of methods including strength training,

cardiovascular work, and Pilates, working with her clients face-to-face in her luxurious fitness studio in London or virtually. We started with a video consultation where I explained my goals and we chatted through my existing routine. Charlotte came back with a smart, glute-focused plan. As my strength built, we took things up a notch. I took Charlotte on-camera with me to the gym, where she virtually held my hand through my first barbell lifts and laid the groundwork for pull-up training, something I’d always wanted to do. Charlotte encouraged me to lift heavier, train with intention,

and own my space on the gym floor. Her ultra-approachable coaching style made every session feel empowering. But what really stood out was how she gave me the tools (and belief!) to level up.

he Elleebana Lash Lift claims to be the world’s fastest lash lift. In about half an hour it lifts and curls natural lashes, making them appear longer and fuller. It promises natural and long-lasting results with minimal maintenance for stunning lashes. So what’s not to like?

I visit the Everlasting Salon in London to experience it. Any doubts I have are quickly dispelled by the friendly, informative vibe. The process is surprisingly relaxing: I lie back with my eyes closed while the technician carefully curls and sets my lashes using a gentle perming solution. There’s no discomfort at all, maybe just a slight tingling, but nothing bothersome.

The results are immediate and impressive. My lashes look longer, darker, and beautifully curled. As if I had just used an eyelash curler and a great mascara, but more natural and with no clumps. I can wake up, wash my face, and go, without needing to touch my lashes. They look polished all the time.

Five weeks in and my lashes are still holding their curl well. If you’re looking for a natural, long-lasting way to enhance your lashes without extensions or daily upkeep, I highly recommend trying a lash lift. It’s a small beauty investment that makes a big di erence. I feel more confident with minimal e ort – and honestly, who doesn’t want that?

Q What was the client’s brief for this project?

A The client envisaged a transformative redesign of their new home, aiming to vividly reflect their unique personalities and diverse interests. The project emphasises elements inspired by their travels, as well as their passions for fashion, theatre, and music. Key areas of focus include the main living room, kitchen and master bedroom, where these influences will come together to create a harmonious and expressive living space.

Q How does the design solution you came up with meet the needs of the users of the space?

A Our design prioritises adaptability through flexible layouts that cater to diverse

entertaining needs. The main lounge for example features three distinct seating areas, each serving a unique purpose: an L-shaped sofa for cosy TV and music gatherings, a tête-à-tête conversational piece next to the fireplace for intimate conversations, and a vibrant bar area for lively discussions. Complementing this is the conservatory, elegantly framed with matching window treatments to create a theatrical atmosphere, artfully concealing curved banquettes. This thoughtfully curated space not only enhances usability, but also elevates the overall experience, making it perfect for both entertaining and relaxation.

Q What do you consider the most successful creative, innovative or problem-solving design solution you delivered on this project?

A The kitchen emerged as the project’s most compelling challenge, demanding innovative space planning due to its dimensions. Ultimately this led it to be the project’s stand-out success. We utilised a dynamic mix of materials and shapes to creatively disguise functional areas, maximising usability while seamlessly integrating all

of our client’s desires. Strategic design solutions such as multifunctional islands and cleverly placed storage transformed the space, making it both visually stunning and highly functional. The result not only meets the practical needs of daily life, but also serves as a vibrant multipurpose functional gathering area for our clients to enjoy.

Q What was the biggest challenge you faced in the design or implementation of your design?

A During the design phase of this project, we encountered a significant challenge with outdated plumbing and electrical systems that threatened our design vision. To address this, we adopted a proactive problem-solving approach, conducting thorough assessments to identify solutions that would integrate modern systems without compromising aesthetics. We always found a way around utility problems. Collaborating closely with engineers and contractors, we devised a phased implementation plan to update the infrastructure incrementally, ensuring project momentum. This experience underscored the importance of early collaboration and flexible design strategies,

“We aimed to vividly reflect our clients' unique personalities and diverse interests”

ultimately enhancing functionality and sustainability and informing our approach for future projects.

Q What feedback have you received on the finished project?

A Our clients are thrilled with the results of our collaborative efforts, citing our partnership with the main contractor as a key factor in the project’s success. They have praised our bold design approach, which empowered them to embrace innovative solutions they had previously hesitated to pursue. The multifunctional areas we created throughout the house have transformed their living experience, making entertaining a true delight. Ultimately, our clients love how the space reflects their lifestyle, seamlessly fostering connections and memorable gatherings, reinforcing our commitment to delivering exceptional, userfocused design solutions and experiences.

Q How is the project sustainable, beyond the specification of materials or furniture, fixtures and equipment (FF&E)?

A We embraced sustainability beyond material choices through energy-efficient design that maximises natural light, reducing reliance on artificial lighting and lowering energy consumption. The adaptable layout enhances longevity, allowing spaces to evolve with clients’ and future owners’ needs, minimising renovation waste. Smart home technology optimises operational efficiency, encouraging sustainable living practices. To re-establish the home’s connection to the community, we integrated two new welcoming porches and repositioned the pedestrian gates and landscaping, transforming the property into a vibrant neighbourhood asset. This thoughtful approach has been met with enthusiasm, successfully making the house a beloved part of the local community.

Four traditional challenges you may face when it comes to bathroom design, and tips on how to overcome them

Roca UK, a leader in bathroom innovation and whose products are stocked at The Bathroom Showroom at City Plumbing in St Albans, continues to raise the bar with smart, elegant solutions that respond to the real-life challenges faced in today’s bathrooms. Whether working with compact spaces, awkward pipework or the desire for a sleek, minimal look, Roca has the answers, blending thoughtful design with cutting-edge functionality. Here are four common bathroom challenges – and how you can solve them.

Tricky pipework or weaker walls?

Wall-hung bathroom furniture may be the design choice of the moment, but it’s not always the most practical option, particularly in homes with awkward pipework or walls that can’t support the weight. If that sounds familiar, Roca’s

floorstanding vanity units offer the perfect solution: stable, stylish and designed to work with traditional plumbing systems.

Thanks to the addition of an integrated plinth, these units provide a grounded alternative that doesn’t sacrifice aesthetics. The plinth not only enhances stability but also gives a sleek, built-in appearance that conceals pipework and maximises storage. It’s a great choice for bathrooms where structural limitations or pipe positioning rule out wall-hung furniture. And when it comes to cleaning, a floorstanding unit is often simpler to maintain – no open space underneath means fewer hard-to-reach areas.

Roca now offers plinths across several of its most popular collections, including The Gap, Aleyda, Tenet, Victoria-N and New Victoria. A variety of sizes are available too, ranging from 1,000mm to 550mm, making it easy to find the right fit for the piece of furniture. You can also choose from a palette of timeless finishes, from classic Gloss White and Warm Walnut to the more contemporary Matt White.

Concerned about hygiene and personal care?

The UK smart toilet market is on the rise – set to reach £125 million by 2030, according to Grand View Research, as more homeowners prioritise hygiene and personal care. That’s where Roca’s In-Wash® Inspira and In-Wash® In-Tank® Inspira smart WCs come in. These all-inone units combine a toilet with built-in washing and drying functions, delivering advanced hygiene without the need for a separate bidet – which has never been a first choice for space-starved UK bathrooms.

The In-Wash® In-Tank® goes a step further by integrating the cistern into the WC itself meaning there is no need to conceal one behind the wall – ideal for compact bathrooms or cloakrooms. And while most smart WCs on the market are wall-hung, Roca also offers a closecoupled version, giving homeowners greater flexibility when it comes to installation and style preferences. Add

to that rimless design for easier cleaning, customisable user settings and sleek styling, and it’s easy to see why more people are making the smart switch.

Small bathroom?

Just because you’re working with limited square footage doesn’t mean you have to sacrifice your dream of having both a bath and a shower. With Roca’s new Terran-N quadrant shower trays, clever design makes it possible to enjoy the best of both worlds, even in the most compact bathrooms.

The latest addition to the Terran-N collection introduces a quadrant shape, available in 800 x 800mm and 900 x 900mm sizes. This marks an exciting evolution for the range, offering a solution that’s specifically tailored for small-space living. Designed to slot neatly into a corner, the quadrant tray’s curved front edge takes up less room while still providing a comfortable and stylish showering experience.

To complete the setup, pair your shower with a compact bath that makes the most of the available footprint. A perfect choice is Roca’s Contesa bath range, as it includes models that are just 1,500mm long (when the standard is 1,700mm) x 700mm wide. Together, they form a smart, elegant layout that delivers all the functionality you need without compromising on design.

Don’t sacrifice your dream of having a bath and shower

Cluttered walls?

If you’re striving for a clean, minimalist bathroom aesthetic, Roca’s overflow bath fillers are a gamechanging solution. These clever, space-saving fillers do away with the need for traditional wall- or deck-mounted bath spouts, giving you a smoother silhouette and a clutter-free look.

Available in a selection of modern finishes –including Matt Black, Matt White and Gloss White – and a range of elegant PVD finishes – including Brushed Brass and Stainless Steel – the overflow fillers bring both form and function to contemporary spaces. When paired with Roca’s advanced thermostatic valves, such as the Splash-T or T500, the result is not just design-led but performance-focused.

Roca Group is a global leader in the design, production and marketing of bathroom products for architecture, construction and interior design. Iconic design is a combination of simplicity, aesthetics and functionality

PARTY PIECE

Carl Hansen & Søn presents a wider version of Børge Mogensen’s hunting table from 1950

The Hunting Table embodies Børge Mogensen’s unique ability to merge robust craftsmanship with aesthetic, functional details in which the materials speak for themselves. After relaunching the table in its original dimensions in 2018, Carl Hansen & Søn is now introducing a wider, more spacious version to accommodate larger dinner parties.

The structural design of the Hunting Table comprises two solid-wood trestles with angled legs supporting a slim veneer tabletop with rounded corners and solid-wood edging. Stability is maximized by two diagonal brace bars mounted between the frame and tabletop in brass or stainless steel – a functional touch that accentuates the table’s handcrafted expression. Another refined detail is showcased in the table legs’ through-tenon joint, secured with contrasting wood wedges, meticulously hand-sanded and finished by the skilled artisans at Carl Hansen & Søn.

Knud Erik Hansen, CEO and third generation owner-manager of Carl Hansen & Søn, said: “Børge Mogensen originally designed the elegant Hunting Table for the Cabinetmaker Guild’s Furniture Exhibition in Copenhagen in 1950 under the theme ‘The Hunting Cabin’, for which he also designed the BM1106 Huntsman Chair. These tables bear the distinct hallmark of Børge Mogensen by uniting his sense for simplicity and complexity in an exquisite design. After several years on the market, we’ve experienced an increasing demand for a wider version of the Hunting Table, which is why we’re pleased to present this spacious table that seats eight.”

windows and doors improves your home,

but choosing the right company is what really makes an impact

The older we get, the more we like to have things just as we’d want. The ultimate expression of that on the domestic front is to do as the Simmonds did, and live in a house that was designed for you. But that was 25 years ago.

“When the house was built, we did it on a bit of a budget and used lots of reclaimed materials for the floors and fireplaces to create a bit of an Edwardian look that we like. The windows were wooden framed and the doors were wooden too. It all needed a lot of maintenance over the years and to be honest we were getting a bit tired of that,” the Simmonds say.

Looking for a low maintenance alternative, the Simmonds also wanted their replacement windows and doors to offer better insulation – the old ones had ceased

to be draught-proof – and improve the property’s security. “It couldn’t have been much worse. The back door might as well have been made of balsa wood and the basic locks were well below the standard our insurers needed to see.”

SEHBAC is unusual among suppliers of windows and doors because it has fully fitted out showrooms where you can see and choose from fully installed products rather than samples. “In the Ipswich showroom, people were very professional. They made it

“The finish was really high quality, neat and accurate”

easy to choose windows and doors then pick contrasting interior and exterior colours and retro fittings that styled well with the rest of our home,” say the Simmonds. At the Ipswich showroom they help you see the possibilities, but it’s the installation teams that really seal the transformation of your home. “The SEHBAC team was nothing short of incredible. They took less than four days to do the whole job, working efficiently and professionally through awful weather. The finish was really high quality, neat, and accurate, and the whole result gave us a real sense of pride in our home – just like we felt when we first moved in.”

Each Atkin & Thyme piece is designed to tell a story and spark emotion

ABLEND

The new Atkin & Thyme collection mixes heritage and contemporary design, adding the wow factor to your home

tkin & Thyme has spent over a decade creating furniture that goes beyond function –each piece is designed to tell a story, spark emotion, and bring character into the spaces we live in.

The brand’s distinctive collections showcase a thoughtful blend of characterful marbles, hand-selected woods, and luxurious finishes, with a strong emphasis on quality craftsmanship and timeless materials.

From indoor/outdoor coffee tables to UK-made, made to order sofas, elegant bed frames, statement lighting and dining furniture, every design is created to suit modern lifestyles while adding charm and individuality to the home.

This season’s collection is synonymous to the Atkin & Thyme style – heritage style pieces with classic silhouettes, with a contemporary twist. Each piece has a point of difference, character and brings comfort and warmth to any home.

The autumn/winter 2025 collection brings rich nutty brown wood finishes together with warm green marbles, or textural creamy travertine stone for a more pared-back look. The classic nest-making season also sees statement metal finishes, lighter characterful woods, and five new upholstery ranges for cosying up in front of a roaring fire.

Earlier this year, Atkin & Thyme took centre stage as the official Furniture Partner for Grand Designs Live, London, giving visitors the opportunity to experience its designs in person and appreciate the quality firsthand. The brand also celebrated recognition from the Ideal Home Awards, with the Brera Bedside Table – crafted from rich Emperador Italian marble – winning praise from both design enthusiasts and industry experts.

The full Brera Collection continues to captivate with its refined detailing and sculptural lines, with a new desk joining the collection for autumn/winter 2025. With new arrivals regularly joining the collection, there’s always

something fresh to discover. Whether you’re updating a single corner or reimagining an entire room, Atkin & Thyme offers timeless pieces that bring beauty, personality, and purpose to your home.

Timeless Craftsmanship

Why good design never ages

As summer winds down, we’ve found ourselves reflecting on past projects – and it’s remarkable how many of our kitchens still look as fresh and elegant as the day they were installed. That’s the beauty of good design: it endures.

Of course, a little care goes a long way. But when it comes to craftsmanship, the cabinet makers Moneyhill has partnered with for over a decade truly speak for themselves. Think dovetail joints, seamless internal wooden drawers, and pocket doors that continue to set the standard for thoughtful, functional design.

If you own a painted kitchen, you might find that after five or six years – especially if you share your home with energetic pets or young children – it’s time for a refresh. Repainting offers the perfect opportunity to reimagine your space. Whether it’s a bold new colour for the island or a full palette change, it’s a chance to breathe new life into a familiar setting. And here’s a lovely touch: it’s likely the same dedicated painter who originally worked on your kitchen will return for the update. It’s a bit like welcoming back an old friend – someone who knows your space and understands the care that went into it.

– each adding a subtle layer of sophistication. It’s a small change that can make a big impact. And if you haven’t yet upgraded your Quooker, now’s the time. Installing a wood burner? What you can do to help those you love (and that includes the planet)

Following the government's April statement that, under the proposed Future Homes Standard, the installation of wood burning stoves will be permitted in new homes, it is clear that wood burners will be with us for a very long time. It is an emotive subject, but installing a wood burner is not the crime against the planet that some would have you think. Burning good fuel, from renewable sources, responsibly, in stoves that are designed to consider the environment and your family is the route forward, not an environmental dead end.

So here are some ideas as to how you can make sure you have taken the right turn by considering a wood burner.

THE STOVE

Whilst all stoves are many times cleaner than an open fire, all stoves are not born equal. The Clean Air Act that forced all stove manufacturers to reduce the output of polluting particles in 2022 had a huge effect on stoves in the UK. A Clear Skies 5 stove can emit up to 80% fewer harmful particles even than the average 10-year-old stove.

THE FUEL

You can keep your house warm with many solid fuels, but you can't beat real wood. In the search for greener heat, suppliers have come up with a range of fuels made from waste products, but aged or kiln dried wood from renewable sources will give you a real fire with the least impact on you, your loved ones and the environment.

THE INSTALLATION

In general stoves are designed to burn at a specific rate, to produce a specific output and at that point they will give you the most efficient, cleanest burn. Measure your room's requirements and look for a stove that will most happily give you the right output. Don't only think of the size of your room, but think about how you use your room and how warm you want to be when you are in it.

THE TECHNOLOGY

Stove manufacturers are not standing still. Following 2022, they are working even harder to help stove owners burn mean, and burn clean. Active baffles reduce the incursion of smoke into the room at re-fuelling time, external air supplies improve efficiency and reduce the need for wasteful ventilation through the room, and now even automatic stoves designed to adjust their own settings throughout the burn are coming to market. Of course, they don't go out and chop the wood for you, but that's half the fun! With the help of more and more data, we are starting to learn that, for many, wood burners are the solution, not the problem. Although more people are burning wood in their home, what is most important is that they are burning more considerately.

connections MAKING

Exploring the power of relationships in schools

Strong relationships between teachers and students are fundamental to the educational experience. These connections significantly impact students’ academic success, emotional wellbeing, and overall learning and development. A positive teacherstudent relationship fosters a nurturing environment in which students feel valued, understood, and engaged.

As St Albans School continues to move forward with the extension of coeducational provision from September 2026, one of the most common questions on parents’ and students’ minds is ‘how will the school best prepare for teaching girls?’ While there are subtle changes that will need to be made in the classroom and around the school, the culture of any

learning environment centres around the relationships forged between teachers and students and that remains true of both single sex and co-educational settings. Trust is the cornerstone of effective teacher-student relationships. When students trust their teachers, they are more likely to communicate openly, seek help, and express their ideas without fear of judgment. Teachers who take the time to understand the unique backgrounds, interests, and personal needs of their students will be able to tailor their teaching methods effectively, making learning more relevant and engaging.

INTENTIONAL INTERACTIONS: BUILDING TRUST AND RESPECT

In her 2013 TED Talk entitled Every Kid Needs a Champion, Rita Pierson encapsulates exactly the power of relationships saying: “We know why kids don’t learn. It’s either poverty, low

attendance, negative peer influences. We know why. But one of the things that we never discuss, or we rarely discuss, is the value and importance of human connection. Relationships.”

The relationships Pierson talks about are more than just knowing a child’s name or what sport they play; they are about mutual respect, and as mentioned above, building on trust and feelings of belonging. There is considerable research that highlights the power of relationships, ranging from feelings of acceptance and support to emotional, cognitive and behavioural engagement in lessons.

This starts the second a child walks onto the school site, where they begin interacting and connecting with members of staff. Crucially, these interactions between teacher and student must be intentional, providing the child with a sense of purpose and importance, and should not be confused with friendships. In a 2019 journal, Fisher and Frey used the phrase ‘warm demanders’ to describe how teachers should act within this context, insisting that children work to the best of their

ability when acting with mutual respect and that perseverance is non-negotiable. The relationship between student and teacher also plays a critical role in the social dynamics of the classroom. Teachers are looked upon as role models and mentors, helping their students to navigate interpersonal relationships and develop crucial soft skills like communication and teamwork. This emotional and social support can be particularly vital in co-educational school environments, where understanding and empathy amongst peers regardless of gender, can lead to a more inclusive atmosphere.

MOVING TO A CO-EDUCATIONAL SETTING REQUIRES THOUGHTFUL CHANGES

Building relationships is a fundamental part of what we do in school. Teachers are intentional in their drive to make students feel supported and important. You will see this from the moment a student steps off of the coaches into morning registration, in their lessons throughout the school day, and during their co-curricular endeavours.

Teachers know and understand the pupils in their classroom. They strive to know each child on an individual level, to be able to stretch and challenge their learning, and to support them if they have a specific learning need. As we extend our school community and begin to welcome girls into the fold, the same principles apply – although subtle changes will of course be made to further enhance learning provision for all. Relationships, as before, will come into play during this gradual period of transition. While co-education presents numerous benefits, including increased social integration and diverse perspectives, it also necessitates thoughtful changes in teaching practices and relationship-building strategies.

TIME, EFFORT AND PATIENCE WILL PAY OFF

Co-educational classrooms benefit significantly from mixed learning opportunities, where students of different genders work together on various projects and contribute to discussions. Teachers play a crucial role in facilitating these experiences, encouraging respect, co-operation, and communication.

The transition towards a co-educational setting represents a huge opportunity for growth and development at St Albans. Central to this period of change is the recognition of the power of strong teacherstudent relationships in nurturing an environment where all students thrive both academically and socially in a diverse classroom setting. That said, building effective and powerful relationships is hard work and it takes skill, time, effort and patience. Yet it is a fundamental ingredient of truly excellent teaching and is part of the fabric that makes a school a wonderful place to learn.

AUTUMN adventures

It’s a world exploration at Hertford Barns

At the Ofsted-rated ‘Outstanding’ Hertford Barns Day Nursery on Cole Green, the changing seasons provide the perfect opportunity for exciting new learning experiences. As proud holders of the prestigious ‘Green Flag with Distinction’ from Eco-Schools, the highest accolade in the international scheme, children can immerse themselves in the vast curriculum of eco-activities on offer all year round. The initiatives are designed to nurture personal, social and emotional life skills, all while gently introducing children to early maths and science concepts. In the paddock outside, pre-schoolers tend to root vegetables and pick herbs, which are then used in meals by talented nursery chefs to extend the learning experience from plant to plate, as well as promoting the importance of good nutrition to healthy lifestyles.

Amongst the grounds of the charming character building and converted stable block, children take part in litter-picking sessions, teaching care for the planet and good citizenship. Armed with magnifying glasses, autumn adventures continue with scavenger hunts through crunchy leaves and insect observations in resident bug hotels. Pre-schoolers take a lead role in encouraging the rest of the nursery to be environmentally considerate with their very own resident ‘Eco-Committee’, helping to ensure resources like paper and electricity aren’t wasted, taps are not left running and that knowledge is shared. Inside, spacious classrooms are home to stimulating learning spaces, state of the art ICT, toys and equipment, messy play stations, ‘role play’ areas and purpose-built facilities including a children’s shaker style kitchen for cooking and baking activities, with days planned around personal interests.

At Hertford Barns, older children are supported in their transition to school through a comprehensive school readiness programme, covering topics like selfcare, early phonics and mark making. The bespoke approach helps children develop key skills such as using cutlery, writing and identifying their names and encouraging independence in dressing, ensuring they feel prepared and excited for their next steps. Local teachers are invited to meet future students and schools share their information for bright displays, detailing names of teachers and daily routines. Families play a vital role in this transition process, and practitioners are on hand to support them every step of the way with resources including a series of books published by Childbase Partnership professionals to offer expert guidance. Upon joining, families also get exclusive access to the ‘Childbase at Home’ website which is filled with online content and materials, as well as opportunities to book free parent masterclasses with sector experts, including speech and language development sessions to ensure children are confident and independent learners, ready to embrace school life.
