LETTER ABSOLUTELY’S January issue highlights
I
1
t is time to banish those January blues. I must admit I have never been one to be overly affected post-Christmas, I always see the new year as an opportunity for a fresh start and tackle those things I have long put off (like sorting out a new car). But there are many that do need a little pick-me-up, which is where we come in. We have devoted this issue to your health and wellbeing, plus highlight the many things to be excited about in Hertfordshire across 2026. There is a new way of enjoying Pilates opening in the county and it may just be the exercise that finally gets you off the sofa. We look at ways you can detox this month without making it a chore, plus offer up some top tips on how 2026 could be your healthiest yet. If you do feel blue, we also have some minor tweaks you can make to counter that downer. We obviously believe Hertfordshire to be the most exciting county in the UK, and our big 2026 preview certainly backs up that belief. Some of the highlights this year include Iron Maiden at Knebworth, Foodies Festival returning to St Albans, the Hertfordshire County Show celebrating all things rural, and even a showcase for entrepreneurs at Ideas Fest. It's going to be a busy year ahead – and, we hope, a happy one for you all too.

his winter, experience the solar spectacle that is Helios, a stunning six-metre sculpture by renowned UK artist Luke Jerram at St Albans Museum + Gallery, running until 25th January. Measuring six metres in diameter, the artwork features 72dpi detailed imagery of the Sun’s surface. At an approximate scale of 1:230 million, each centimetre of the internally lit spherical sculpture represents 2300km of the Sun’s surface. It is very dangerous to look at the Sun directly, so Helios provides a safe opportunity for the public to get up close to and inspect its extraordinarily detailed surface, including sunspots, spicules and filaments. The sculpture also features the source of the solar flares which caused the Northern Lights to be visible from the UK in May 2024. The installation is a fusion of solar imagery, sunlight and a specially created surround sound composition by Duncan Speakman and Sarah Anderson. Helios, in ancient Greek mythology, is the god who personifies the Sun. He drove a four-horse chariot across the sky each day, giving the earth its hours and seasons. Luke Jerram’s multidisciplinary practice involves the creation of sculptures, installations and live arts projects. Living in the UK but working internationally since 1997, Jerram has created a number of extraordinary art projects which have excited and inspired people around the globe. Helios follows on from Luke’s other astronomical artworks Museum of the Moon, Gaia, and Mars. stalbansmuseums.org.uk

JURASSIC WORLD DOMINION, HERE, AND IN THE HEART OF THE SEA, RIGHT, ARE ON NICHOLAS DAINES' STUNTMAN CV
HOLLYWOOD TO THE
I
n the high-stakes world of Hollywood action, Nicholas Daines is a name that appears in the credits of some of cinema’s biggest blockbusters. A professional stuntman, adventurer, and wildlife presenter, Nicholas has performed in the shadows of giants – diving headfirst into danger so that others don’t have to. But away from the cameras, his next chapter is less about explosions and more about connection – to the natural world, and to the creatures that define it. This winter season, Nicholas has teamed up with Budgy Smuggler to champion their bold and inspiring Wildlife Range – a collection that
16
celebrates the beauty, diversity, and fragility of Earth’s ecosystems. It’s a partnership that feels as organic as it does adventurous, merging Hollywood action with environmental awareness in a way few could pull off. “The Wildlife Range is more than a tribute to nature’s beauty – it’s a reminder of our shared responsibility to protect it,” Nicholas explains. “Every design tells the story of a creature that makes our planet extraordinary.” THE STUNTMAN WHO BECAME A STORYTELLER With a filmography that reads like a blockbuster marathon – Indiana Jones
and the Dial of Destiny, The Marvels, Harry Potter, Jurassic World Dominion, Mission: Impossible, and In the Heart of the Sea – Nicholas has spent his life performing in some of cinema’s most demanding environments. In the Heart of the Sea, Ron Howard’s epic retelling of the legend that inspired Moby Dick, saw Nicholas double for Cillian Murphy in harrowing open-ocean stunt sequences, coming face-to-face with the full power of the elements. “That film was my turning point,” he recalls. “We were literally battling the sea – real water, real waves, real risk. It reminded me that nature is the greatest force of

HEART OF THE WILD all. You can choreograph danger on a film set, but you can’t control the ocean.” It’s that raw authenticity – the intersection of human endurance and the untamed – that Nicholas brings into his wildlife work today. His new series, Stuntman in the Wild, takes the physical discipline, breath control, and fear management honed on movie sets into the real world, immersing him in wild places and intimate encounters with nature’s apex creatures. “Film taught me how to manage risk and push limits,” he says. “The wild teaches me humility. When you’re swimming with an anaconda in the Amazon or
free-diving alongside a humpback whale, you’re not the hero – you’re the guest.” BRIDGING TWO WORLDS: FILM AND NATURE The collaboration with Budgy Smuggler is a natural evolution of Nicholas’ journey – merging storytelling, adventure, and environmental appreciation into one cohesive mission. The brand’s Wildlife Range celebrates Earth’s most iconic animals with vibrant, hand-drawn designs – from whales and sharks to rainforest species – reminding wearers of the wild worlds they represent. “The crossover between film and wildlife
is powerful,” Nicholas says. “Both are about emotion and connection. Whether it’s a creature emerging from the depths in Jurassic World Dominion or a whale surfacing in the South Pacific, these moments awaken something primal in us. The Budgy Smuggler Wildlife Range captures that same spirit – it makes you feel part of the story.” LOCAL TIES Given his work, unsurprisingly Nicholas is constantly on the move, but has called Hemel Hempstead home, particularly during his time working on the Harry Potter series. “I was living in Apsley at A B S O L U T E LY m a g a z i n e s

the time,” he says. “I would love driving through the steep hedgerow side lanes of Flaunden and make my way on all the backroads to the Alford Arms pub in Frithsden on a summer’s afternoon with the roof down (I’ve always owned a convertible). One of my favourite things to do was also to visit the little village of Aldbury, which to me is the epitome of a quintessential English village with the village pond in the middle of it surrounded by cute cottages. The pubs on the green in Chippenham were also top spots for a drink, showing off the area to friends and giving them the real English countryside experience when visiting from abroad.”

"THE NATURAL WORLD IS FAR MORE AWE-INSPIRING THAN ANYTHING WE CAN SCRIPT"
ADVENTURE WITH PURPOSE Now, though, his focus is on nature. For Nicholas, the partnership with Budgy Smuggler is more than a collaboration – it’s a statement of intent. It fuses the fearless mindset of a stunt performer with the reverence of a naturalist. “I’ve spent my life creating cinematic danger,” he says. “Now, I want to use that experience to create cinematic truth – to remind people that the real world, the natural world, is far more awe-inspiring than anything we can script.” Through his work both on screen and in the wild, Nicholas continues to blur the line between adventure and awareness. And through this new partnership with Budgy Smuggler, he’s helping others to celebrate – and protect – the beauty of the world we all share. “Wear the Wild,” Nicholas says with a grin. “Because when you wear it, you carry a piece of it with you.” Follow Nicholas’ latest journey on YouTube: Nicholas Daines - Stuntman In The Wild and on Instagram @nicholasdaines

HERTFORDSHIRE COUNTY SHOW 23-24 MAY
hertsshow.com The Hertfordshire County Show returns to the 70-acre showground in Redbourn, Hertfordshire – a long-running staple of the county’s events calendar. This is a celebration of rural life, agriculture and local food: you’ll find livestock competitions (cattle, sheep), equestrian displays, craft marquees, vintage tractors, local food stalls and family-friendly activities. The show is run by the Hertfordshire Agricultural Society and attracts over 30,000 visitors each year, making it one of the county’s flagship public festivals. In short: if you want to get a strong sense of Hertfordshire’s countryside, heritage, farming and communityspirit, this event delivers and is ideal for families, food lovers and anyone curious about rural craft and skills.
CHILFEST
BEN ATKINSON AT THE HERTFORDSHIRE COUNTY SHOW
3-4 JULY
chilfest.co.uk Returning to Tring, the Chilfest music and leisure weekend offers a vibrant mix of nostalgia, live music and festival fun in Hertfordshire’s scenic Chiltern Hills. With an emphasis on 80s and 90s acts on the main stage, family-friendly activities, food and drink stalls and a relaxed outdoor environment, it’s pitched at both music fans who remember those decades and younger crowds looking for an accessible summer festival. The setting near Tring gives it a countryside-meets-festival vibe, meaning you can combine live music with the natural beauty of Hertfordshire. For those seeking a weekend mini-festival experience without going too far afield, Chilfest is a strong contender.

FOODIES FESTIVAL ST ALBANS 29-31 MAY
foodiesfestival.com The Foodies Festival at St Albans, held at Oaklands College, is one of the biggest food and drink events in the county. As always, expect top chefs, live music, a food and drink theatre, kids’ cookery and street food vendors (at the time of print, no announcements had been made about this year’s line-up). Expect cooking demos from Michelinstar chefs, a “Cake & Bake” theatre, BBQ stages, drinks sampling, artisan producers and a lively atmosphere. It’s very much a full-day (or weekend) outing for food lovers, families and groups of friends.
If your interest lies in culinary experiences, discovering local produce, or simply enjoying an indulgent day out, this event makes a great fit.
IDEAS FEST 9-10 SEPTEMBER
ideasfest.uk
Got a new business idea? Then The Ideas Fest in Tring this September is for you. It’s described as “the UK’s festival for entrepreneurs, founders and business-leaders” – so rather than just entertainment, it’s heavily geared towards idea-generation, networking, workshops and business inspiration. TULIP FIELDS SPRING 2026 DATES TBC
tulipfields.co.uk This event at Tulleys Tulip Fields in London Colney, St Albans, is slated for spring 2026 and features approximately 500,000 tulips across 100+ varieties, together with live entertainment, Dutch-style street food, a windmill and photo-friendly landscaping. It offers visitors a colourful, photo-rich outdoor experience – think spring bloom, fresh air, family-friendly strolls, rather than music or heavy festival infrastructure. If you prefer a lighter, seasonal outing to kick off the year with something visual and outdoorsy, this event would be a beautiful choice.

SLAM DUNK, PHOTO BY EDDY MAYNARD
19 JULY
folkbytheoak.com Folk by the Oak returns to the leafy parkland setting of Hatfield House. This one-day festival focuses on folk, roots, blues, acoustic music and offers a relaxed family-friendly vibe. In addition to music you’ll find a craft fair, storytelling, children’s activities, real ale bar and artisan food stalls. It’s less of a full-blown mega-festival and more of a refined, scenic and accessible experience. If you prefer laid-back afternoons with good music in a park setting (rather than two nights of camping and big crowds), this makes for an excellent summer outing.

unforgettable Slam Dunk in 2025, the festival is gearing up to raise the bar even higher with a massive first lineup dropping. Topping the bill are Good Charlotte and Sublime, plus dozens more artists spanning the best in poppunk, emo, ska, metal and beyond. Slam Dunk will return to Hatfield Park on Saturday 23rd May, before heading north to Leeds, Temple Newsam on Sunday 24th May 2026. What started as a Leeds club night in 2001 grew into a one-day festival by 2006, headlined by Fall Out Boy. Since then, it’s exploded into a multi-award winning weekend festival, taking place at Hatfield Park and Temple Newsam. Over the years, Slam Dunk has brought icons like Paramore, Panic! At The Disco, Enter Shikari, Jimmy Eat World, Sum 41 and NOFX to the stage, while championing the next wave of rock, pop-punk, metal and emo. Now, two decades in, Slam Dunk is looking ahead to next summer, ready to deliver the biggest and best Slam Dunk yet.
HERTFORDSHIRE HALF MARATHON & 10K
HERTFORDSHIRE STEAM & COUNTRY SHOW
1 NOVEMBER
30-31 MAY
Ready to turn your running goals into extraordinary achievements? From iconic city marathons to extreme ultra challenges, there are a whole host of must-run events set for 2026. Whether you’re chasing a personal best, testing your limits, or seeking a life-changing expedition, these runs promise memories, experiences and triumphs you’ll never forget. The main large Hertfordshire running event for 2026 is the Hertfordshire Half Marathon & 10K on Sunday 1st November in Knebworth, offering scenic and undulating road routes. This road closed half marathon will start and finish at the iconic Knebworth House with the course taking participants around the surrounding rural roads.
The Hertfordshire Steam Engine Preservation Society was formed on the 10th July 1964 by a few like-minded enthusiasts, with the original membership costing 10 shillings (50p in new money). Their aim was to promote steam preservation in the area by running steam rallies and regular club nights for friends to meet and discuss steam. As a registered charity, the society’s objectives are to encourage road steam preservation in an increasingly technological world. Their society is associated with the National Traction Engine Trust, and The Federation of British Historic Vehicle Clubs. The Hertfordshire Steam Engine Preservation Society is open to all enthusiasts whether owner, driver or those just interested in the history of our great steam heritage. Society members have a range of interests that include many other items of historic transport or agricultural interest, such as vintage tractors, commercial vehicles, cars, fire engines, motorcycles and stationary engines – and all will be on show at this popular event.

FOOD & DRINK • INTERVIEW
COUNTRY CLASSIC Tewinbury had quite a 2025, but in Cowshed the new year may prove to be even more exciting. Executive Chef Alistair Dibbs tells us what makes the restaurant stand out
S
et in a myriad of beautifully converted 17th-century buildings on a working farm, Tewinbury is an upscale countryside escape along the River Mimram. From field-to-fork and garden-toglass, local provenance is king at Tewinbury, with ingredients sourced on the farm or within the local area. Executive Chef Alistair Dibbs, whose culinary journey has taken him through Michelin-starred kitchens, oversees the talented kitchen teams who whisk up all manner of seasonal sustenance across the three fantastic food and drink offerings. Within the former home of the farm’s herd of dairy cows is now Cowshed, Tewinbury’s signature 80-cover restaurant. The space embodies a tasteful, modern farmhouse feel with plenty of natural, tactile furnishings, exposed brickwork and original oak beams. The menu of British classics with a refined touch shifts with the seasons, inspired by the cyclical bounty of the kitchen garden, working farm and revered local suppliers. Think beef tartare with cured egg yolk, beef fat emulsion and game crisps; winter squash fondant with chestnut, goat’s cheese and sage; whole plaice with capers and sea herbs; fresh jerusalem artichoke tortellini with capers and split tarragon sauce; and on Sundays, dive into cured slow roasted old spot pork belly with caramel apple sauce served with all the trimmings. Cowshed looks to be one of Hertfordshire’s hottest restaurants in 2026, so Absolutely chatted to Alistair all about the Tewinbury.
Q Cowshed’s menu celebrates field-to-
fork dining – how would you describe your personal food philosophy and how it shapes the restaurant’s identity? A My philosophy has always been to let the ingredients speak for themselves. We use the best ingredients we can find, ensuring they are in season and do our very best to extract the most flavour from them. Q You’ve worked in Michelin-starred
kitchens and with chefs like Tom Kerridge and Hélène Darroze – how have those experiences influenced your leadership style and culinary creativity at Cowshed? A I learned that strong foundations and routine are what make real creativity possible. When a kitchen runs with consistency and discipline, the team feels confident, service flows and there’s a space to push ideas further. At Cowshed, I try to balance that structure with an open, collaborative environment so the team can experiment and produce their best work. Q How does being based on a 700-acre working farm influence your approach to menu creation and ingredient sourcing? A We work with a small network of very local suppliers who we have used for years and trust implicitly. We also have our own cows, sheep and pigs which feature on our menu as well as utilising local shoots for game. We forage at key times of year and also have a great gardens team who grow fantastic fruits and vegetables through the year specifically for the Cowshed. A B S O L U T E LY m a g a z i n e s

FOOD & DRINK • INTERVIEW
Q Can you share some of your favourite
local producers or ingredients? A Our pigs are a real standout on the menu. They’re incredibly versatile, giving us a wide range of cuts to work with, which lets the chefs be creative and really showcase their skills. It’s a great example of how local produce can elevate both flavour and imagination in the kitchen. Q How do you ensure that sustainability
isn’t just a buzzword, but truly embedded in the kitchen’s day-to-day operations? A Amongst other things, the team is tasked with keeping food waste to an absolute minimum. As we utilise whole animals from the farm and from game shoots these can be used in many different dishes. For example, one of our cows will produce several different steak cuts for our Cowshed grill menu, mince for burgers, chuck steak for slow cooked stews and bones that will go into stocks. Q What’s your process for developing new dishes? A We will often run specials alongside the main menu to allow us to develop dishes and get feedback on them before they secure a more permanent position on the main menu. Q The menu combines refined British classics with a modern twist – how do you strike the right balance between comfort and innovation? A We enjoy elevating dishes that use relatively
32
humble ingredients. The pomme anna on the menu at the moment is a case in point. In the right hands this dish is much more than a sum of its parts and delivers on taste every time. It is definitely possible to do both comfort and innovation at the same time! Q The Cowshed’s Afternoon Tea
has become a signature offering – what inspired its unique take? A We have a fantastic pastry chef and baker who both have great experience with afternoon tea and will innovate seasonally alongside their regular work. I have the easy job of tasting and giving the thumbs up! Q Is there one dish that, for you, best captures the spirit of Cowshed? A Our cuts of the day deliver the spirit of the Cowshed – we keep it simple. They’re chargrilled and the flavour of the meat shines through with a simple garnish. Q You oversee multiple dining experiences across Tewinbury. How do you maintain consistency and creativity across each venue? A As I mentioned earlier, having a strong foundation is vitally important. It’s also about putting the right people in the right places and finding specialists in their field. For example, the skill sets needed to run the Cowshed kitchen compared to the events kitchen are very different. Neither is harder than the other, they are just
very different to suit different offerings. Promoting a strong team spirit is also important so that the team feels like we’re all working together to achieve the same goal. Q What’s your approach to mentoring young chefs and fostering talent? A We put young people through an apprenticeship scheme with HIT training, where they gain their qualification. At Tewinbury, we’re very lucky to have the facilities to give young professionals a really well-rounded training experience with all the various food offerings and kitchens on site. Q Cowshed is part of a larger countryside escape with lodges, a cookery school and wellness offerings – how do you see the dining experience fitting into that wider guest journey? A The guest journey is something that we look at extensively. With the varied offering of afternoon tea, dinner and Sunday lunch in the Cowshed as well as the Granary kitchen, there is plenty to keep guests busy and give them a full view of our farm-to-fork dining. Q How do you hope guests feel
when they dine at Cowshed?
A We want guests to feel well-
looked after and to enjoy eating really good, local produce.
Q How does 2026 look for Cowshed – any exciting developments? A One particular highlight will be our monthly tasting nights run by our chef Michael, these will be inspired by a particular ingredient produced on the farm. Apart from that, we look forward to constantly evolving and developing the food in the Cowshed.

CAESAR SALAD
For those looking to embrace lighter meals this new year, San Carlo show the nourishing way
J
anuary has a way of inviting renewal. After the sparkle, indulgence and inevitable overeating of December, most of us begin the new year with good intentions: to nourish better, move more, and make choices steeped in balance and wellbeing. The beauty of Italian food is that it never demands sacrifice to achieve that balance. It is, at its core, about simplicity, beautiful ingredients allowed to shine. San Carlo has built its reputation on exactly that philosophy. For decades, the Italian family-owned restaurant group has championed quality, seasonality and honest Italian flavour. Many of the ingredients used across the menu – from cheeses and cured meats to specialty oils and ripe tomatoes – are sourced directly from Italy and selected for authenticity and provenance. Meanwhile, fresh fish and seafood are brought in from trusted suppliers closer to home, ensuring both freshness and sustainability without compromising on quality. Whatever the dish, the standard is the same: ingredients that speak for themselves. But this year, San Carlo invites us to rediscover something often overshadowed by rich pastas and creamy risottos: the lighter side of Italian cuisine. A side built not on indulgence, but on vegetables, lean proteins, broths, herbs and olive oil – the traditional foods that Italians have enjoyed for generations.
CEO Marcello Distefano has long said: “If the quality of your ingredients is good enough, then people will come back.” And this truth shapes everything San Carlo places on the table. Whether you choose a warming bowl of slow-cooked lentils, a salad dressed with nothing more than olive oil and seasoning, or a piece of delicately grilled fish – quality leads, flavour follows, and satisfaction never lags behind. This is not January austerity. It is enjoyment – redefined. The kind of food that leaves you energised, not weighed down. Food that feels both fresh and restorative. Food that begins a new year gently, but with unmistakable pleasure.
Lighter Starts: Soups, Salads & Antipasti While many menus turn to richness for comfort, San Carlo’s January selection proves that light dishes can be every bit as satisfying. The experience begins with starters that prioritise freshness and purity of flavour – plates where vegetables, legumes and seafood do the talking. The classic Minestrone is the definition of feel-good food. A broth layered slowly with seasonal vegetables – carrots, courgettes, tomatoes, beans, pasta – all simmered until the flavours deepen and blend. It’s a bowl that warms without overwhelming. For those who prefer lighter cold starters, the salad selection is exceptional. The Insalata Tricolore, for instance, is a perfect trio of creamy buffalo mozzarella, ripe avocado and tomatoes bursting with sweetness – a plate of Italian colour and balance. For added protein, the restaurant offers salads dotted with grilled chicken or tuna: clean, lean and delicate enough to leave space for the main course. Seafood lovers will be drawn to more refined antipasti. Tartare di Tonno, finely chopped yellowfin tuna dressed with lemon, olive oil and rocket, is fresh, bright and full of omega-rich goodness. Alternatively, steamed mussels in white wine and shallots bring the sea to the table with elegance, while those cooked in a gentle tomato-based Arrabbiata offer spice without heaviness. These are dishes that make you pause – not because they overwhelm, but because they’re executed so beautifully. Fresh herbs, a squeeze of lemon, the perfume of good olive oil – each plate reminds you that Italian cooking is never complicated. It’s thoughtful. Honest. And, crucially, deeply enjoyable without being excessive. You notice how lightness doesn’t mean limitation. Instead, you feel an invitation, to savour, to slow down, to explore flavour through freshness. A January table at San Carlo is not a retreat from pleasure. It is a return to its origin.

SEA BASS AL CARTOCCIO GELATO
Lean Mains, Grilled Fish & Vegetable-Forward Dining The main courses are where San Carlo’s light-leaning January menu truly flourishes. Without losing comfort or satisfaction, the options celebrate the ingredients that make Mediterranean dining feel timelessly good for the soul. For pescatarians – or simply those seeking a leaner centrepiece – Tonno e Lenticchie is a signature choice. Yellowfin tuna is charcoal-grilled to perfection, retaining juiciness while developing irresistible smoky depth. It’s served on a bed of tomato-rich lentils, bringing warmth, fibre and protein in equal measure. It’s a plate you finish feeling satisfied, not heavy – the ideal winter reset. Equally impressive are San Carlo’s grilled fresh fish offerings, often including Dover sole, sea bass and seasonal market catches. Served simply – perhaps with lemon, capers, or a drizzle of olive oil – they highlight how restraint can be a culinary superpower. A whole grilled sea bass, its skin crisp from flame, its flesh tender and fragrant, requires no embellishment beyond what the Mediterranean naturally provides. Lean meat lovers will gravitate to Pollo Marinato, a flattened chicken breast chargrilled with butter, capers and lemon. It’s light yet full-flavoured – proof that protein-forward dishes need not be dull or dry. The chicken arrives with that satisfying balance of char and tenderness, brightened beautifully by citrus. This is also the perfect moment to explore San Carlo’s vegetable-forward sides and supplements. Instead of chips, opt for spinach sautéed with garlic and chilli, tenderstem broccoli glossed by olive oil, or a vibrant mixed salad kissed with seasoning. These sides, often overshadowed by heavier pairings, emerge here as stars in their own right. Each mouthful feels fresh, rewarding – the kind of eating that supports wellbeing while still tasting like a treat. And yes, dessert is welcome. January should feel balanced, not restrictive. A scoop of San Carlo’s home-made gelato, an elegant millefeuille, or a delicate pistachio mousse cake can bring closure without excess. It’s not about denial – it’s about pleasure in moderation, guided by high-quality craft. What San Carlo proves – unequivocally – is that lighter eating can be just as luxurious as indulgence. When dishes are rooted in fresh produce, seasonal sourcing and authentic Italian simplicity, good health and great flavour cease to be opposites. They become allies. As another year begins, this feels like the most delicious lesson of all. Salute: to freshness, vitality and meals that love you back. San Carlo’s collection of award winning Italian restaurants can be found across the UK from Manchester, Liverpool and Birmingham to Leeds, London and Bristol. To book visit sancarlo.co.uk

Join the ride A Reformer Pilates studio with a difference has opened in Borehamwood. The founder, Natalie Gubbay-Jackson, tells Absolutely more
Q What inspired you to launch
Override Reformer in Borehamwood? A I launched the Override brand five years ago by opening Override spin in North Finchley; since then the brand has expanded with Override Fitness (Personal Training) and the Override Indoor cycle instructor academy – and now Override Reformer Pilates. I was inspired by people’s attitude to self-care and personal development within their fitness regime. The days of exercise as punishment for eating are behind us as we teach the next generation to exercise to be strong, not to be small. People want to exercise in a safe space, no judgement and in a way that is safe and supported. I know that Reformer Pilates can offer a
46
full head-to-toe (mind and soul) workout whilst being kind to your body. Q In your opinion, how does
Override Reformer differ from other studios in the area? A Well, we are the first Reformer Pilates studio in the area! Finally, Override has brought the Pilates principles to Borehamwood. Override Reformer has a dynamic vibe, with promoting strength and confidence as our core value along with soft halo lighting, motivating fun playlists, extremely talented instructors and a high touch support to guide all levels of people. Q Can you tell us about the atmosphere
and design of the new space – what
kind of experience do you want clients to have when they walk in? A Wow! That is what everyone has said upon walking into the brand new Override Reformer studio. Clean, fresh, welcoming, luxury and slick. We have worked super hard to create a stunning studio. Ultimately, though, we really want the studio impression to be the least exciting part for our clients – the talented instructors delivering lifechanging reformer classes is our true full ‘wow factor’ and always will be. Q What are some of the signature
classes or techniques that make Override Reformer unique? A It is important that we don’t try and

“What Override adds to Joseph Pilates' principles is a fun factor and a dynamic approach” change a fantastic workout that really works just for the sake of it. Joseph Pilates’ principles and his creation of Reformer Pilates is unique in itself and it is extremely effective – what Override will add in addition to these principles is a fun factor, a fitness element and a dynamic approach. We do this by using accessories such as our weighted balls, weighted ring, and a jump board incorporating the idea of progressive overload into exercises on the reformer. Q How do you cater to both
beginners and advanced Pilates enthusiasts under one roof? A Excellent question – and one we’re always striving to perfect. Every person who walks into a class brings their own unique mix of experience, ability, strength, flexibility, and even old injuries or movement patterns. You might have
someone attending their very first reformer class who trains six times a week at the gym, another who’s brand new to Pilates but full of curiosity, and someone else who’s been using the Reformer for years but is just now discovering how much more effective it can be with proper guidance. That’s why our instructors are trained to deliver classes that are intelligently layered – offering progressions and regressions to suit every level in the room. They know how to read the space, adapt in real time, and ensure that every client feels both challenged and supported. No matter how tough you think a class might be, when your movement is precise, your control centred, and your focus intentional, even a lower-intensity class or one with fewer variations will deeply target your muscles and joints in the most satisfying way. Our team is here to make sure every session
feels amazing – empowering, effective, and uniquely right for each client. Q What are your long-term goals for
Override Reformer – could you see it expanding or franchising in the future? A Wouldn’t that be great – Override spin and Override Reformer all over the UK and internationally! I would love that – who wouldn’t? Every empty shop I walk past I peer in to see if it could be suitable. For now though I want to put everything and more into making Override a brand to be proud of and a brand that people want to be a part of. My next stop would be Essex (that’s where I am from) so I would love to expand to a few studios there – people in Essex are so lovely and they are very into their fitness, health and wellbeing.
EXPECT A REAL COMMUNITY FEEL
NATALIE GUBBAY-JACKSON
Q Finally, if someone’s never tried
Reformer Pilates before, what would you say to encourage them to give it a go at Override Reformer? A I would ask them to tell me about their daily life, their pressures, concerns, fitness experience, movement ability or restrictions. I would gather information first before going in for the “OMG why are you not doing Reformer Pilates?” I know they would love it of course, but for me to encourage them appropriately, let’s find out how it could help them. There are so many benefits, but let’s match the benefits to the person so it makes sense. overridereformer.com A B S O L U T E LY m a g a z i n e s

Year to
remember How you can make 2026 your healthiest ever By SARA KUIJTEN
C
hristmas is done and dusted and tinsel safely stowed for another year. It’s time to make good on those new year’s resolutions. If you’ve always thought you were weak-willed while those around you were made of stronger stuff, think again. Willpower, it seems, is a somewhat limited resource and many experts believe that trying to give up too many things at once or when under stress is more or less impossible. You have to be in the right frame of mind, and where willpower is concerned, that
would be the prefrontal cortex just behind your forehead. This is the area of the brain responsible for keeping us focused, handling short-term memory and solving abstract problems. And if it’s busy doing all of these things at once, showing restraint can sometimes prove difficult. Make 2026 your healthiest year yet with these five easy and, more importantly, sustainable switches. One thing at a time You are much more likely to succeed in your goals if you allow your brain to concentrate on one change at a time; embarking upon a new diet, coupled with daily sessions at the gym (having previously never set foot in one) is unrealistic. Certain nutrients can also help to boost concentration and support brain health. Boost your B vitamins – these are important for managing stress and healthy brain function. Of all the B vitamins, B12 is especially important for red blood cell formation and energy release. Having low levels of vitamin B12 will zap your mental energy, your attention span and your cognitive function. We only need a small amount of vitamin B12, circa 1.5 mcg per day, but because it is A B S O L U T E LY m a g a z i n e s

Everything in moderation If you want to lose a few pounds, do so sensibly. Eat healthily and eat regularly. Your brain uses more energy when it’s being asked to exert willpower, and the hungrier you are the harder it is to resist cravings. To combat sugary cravings top up on chromium-rich foods, which can include wholegrains, brown rice and green beans. Spirulina can also help to reduce cravings and that’s because it is a really good source of tyrosine, an amino acid that encourages the brain to release dopamine, which is what sugar does, and so cravings for the sweet stuff are reduced. Stay on top of stress You’ve probably heard of your ‘fight or flight’ reflexes, but what you might not realise is that every time you experience stress, these reflexes are triggered. ‘Fight or flight’ is great for fleeing actual danger, but a little excessive when pulled into a meeting with your boss. When stressed, your body prioritises where it spends its energies, and nutrients are leached away from less vital areas of the body, such as your skin and hair, and redirected towards key survival organs. Nutrients that are used up more quickly in times of stress include magnesium, the B vitamins and vitamin C, so look to keep these topped up through diet and if necessary, supplements.

Just staying on top of things If you are feeling a little low, St. John’s Wort or Hypericum can help with feelings of sluggishness, low mood and mild anxiety. Scientists believe it works by prolonging the action of serotonin and by increasing levels of melatonin. Hyperiforce St John’s Wort tablets are registered for addressing low mood and mild anxiety, but Hypericum can take up to six weeks for best results, and it can interact with other medications and affect the way they work, so isn’t suitable for everyone. Check with your GP first if on prescribed medicines. If Hypericum is not for you, you could try A.Vogel’s Passiflora Complex Spray. A gentle, non-addictive relaxing blend of herbs for those needing to relax, it combines Passiflora (passionflower) and Lemon Balm, plus the handy spray makes it ideal for using on-the-go.
“Every journey begins with a first step”
Commit to an exercise regime, but keep it real Finally, moderate, regular exercise is key to a healthy lifestyle; it speeds up the rate at which your body breaks down fat and it’s great for your mental health, better still if you can get outdoors as green space exposure is believed to activate a primitive part of the brain involved with stress regulatory responses. Just 10 minutes a day will help you to feel better and more in control. Final take-home? Don’t be too hard on yourself. Every journey begins with a first step – well done for wanting to make positive change in the first place.

HEALTH & BEAUTY • DETOX
Feel good factors
How you can detox without the drama this month By RICHARD SAMBRIDGE
he January detox has become somewhat of a post-Christmas institution in its own right. A popular way to repent for festive excesses and indulgence, the detox industry is estimated to be worth millions. But can detoxing be bad for you?
T
of a detox is very simple – you’re aiming to rid the body of all those nasty toxins and chemicals that have built up over the course of your celebratory drinks and meals in December. If you can get rid of these chemicals, your body is supposed to be cleansed and you’re meant to feel reinvigorated and revitalised with the added bonus of shedding a few pounds along the way. Sounds great… what’s not to like?
Benefits of detox From fasting to sacrificing solid food in favour of super-green smoothies, the idea
Can detoxing be bad for you? Spoiler alert… None of the benefits of a detox are actually backed by science, at
least when it comes to getting toxins and pollutants out of your system. There are also many aspects of a detox regime that can be problematic for your health. Drinking green smoothies and lemon water every day may sound healthy, but in reality can lead to some significant deficiencies in nutrients such as protein and fibre. This is because juicing vegetables, as opposed to eating them in their solid form, strips away the fibre and increases the content of fructose, the natural sugar found in fruit. Your blood sugar levels will suffer – a high fructose, low fibre diet can A B S O L U T E LY m a g a z i n e s

seriously upset blood sugar and energy levels. You may find that one moment you feel fabulous and full of life, but an hour later you’re slumped over your desk, exhausted. This is because fructose is raising your blood sugar before it rapidly crashes. Then there are the somewhat inevitable stomach upsets – bloating, gas, diarrhoea and constipation, to name but a few. If your gut is protesting to your new dietary habits, it’s definitely time to ditch the purge. So how should you approach your detox diet in the new year? If you’re able to tick these boxes, you’re more likely to stay the distance and see real results. Eat more fresh foods What you need are fresh, organic options. Brightly coloured fruit and leafy green vegetables are bursting with antioxidants and fibre, and you want to retain these good nutrients as much as possible. Support your gut If you keep this crucial system working efficiently, you shouldn’t need to detox – a happy gut will take care of getting rid of nasty toxins and impurities by itself. A prebiotic and probiotic combination is one of the best ways to keep your gut happy. Gut-friendly prebiotics Molkosan Fruit Digestion and Molkosan Gut Health Sparkling Drink help to feed your probiotics and create a healthy environment for them to flourish in.

potassium, when you work up a sweat. Keep these and other minerals in balance with A.Vogel’s Balance Mineral Drink. It provides magnesium, zinc, potassium, calcium and vitamin D to help reduce fatigue, improve energy, replace lost electrolytes and support muscle function post-workout. Get a good night’s sleep Your body relies on you getting a good night’s sleep in order to rest, repair and, yes, detox! Research has found that while you sleep, waste products are removed from your brain, supporting your cognitive function. It’s also worth noting that sleep deprivation can inspire symptoms such as stress, digestive flare-ups and can even make you more prone to unhealthy food cravings. Having trouble nodding off? A natural sleep remedy can help. Dormeasan® Sleep with fresh Valerian and Hops can help you get to sleep and also stay in the deeper stages of sleep for longer. Take 30 drops in a little water half an hour before bedtime. For a water-free solution
that can be taken even in the middle of the night, there’s Sleep Well Dissolvable Granules, with extracts of Lettuce, Lemon Balm, Magnesium and L-Tryptophan. These plant-based ingredients work to promote a calm, restful sleep, are nonaddictive and fast-acting, and won’t leave you feeling groggy in the morning. Help yourself to some herbs Water, cleansing herbs and teas, and spices are of course perfectly healthy in moderation. There are plenty of detox teas to choose from. Bitter herbs can also help. Try incorporating chicory, radishes, rocket and watercress into your diet. An extract of dandelion leaves can act as a gentle diuretic which helps encourage the excretion of toxins from the body, and dandelion root helps with bile secretion, and can therefore be particularly useful for people with gall bladder issues. Globe artichoke is classed as ‘bitter’ too, with research showing it can help the functions of the liver. And of course, milk thistle is a firm favourite when it comes to liver support.
Keep moving Moderate, regular exercise is key to a healthy lifestyle; it speeds up the rate at which your body breaks down fat and expels toxins, and is great for your mental health. Remember to rehydrate. You lose water and electrolytes, such as sodium and

anuary is thought by many to be the saddest month of the year and it’s easy to see why: the bills are in, it’s cold and dark outside, and for some, those new year resolutions may already be broken – there’s even a day on the calendar to mark its significance, and this year ‘Blue January’ falls on 19th January. If January has you feeling low, you should know that you’re not alone. Feelings of sadness, low mood, low energy and problems sleeping are incredibly common – not just in January, but during winter and the darker months of the year. Finding ways to manage low mood and support mental health during times of challenge is hugely important. SMILE! Something as simple as a smile can trick the brain into thinking you’re happy and calm, as you use the same facial muscles you use when you’re genuinely happy. You could even join a laughter class or laughter yoga club, where you can meet and laugh with other people. As long as you are

“Enjoy the psychological benefits of laughing” ABOUT THAT VITAMIN D Often referred to as the ‘sunshine vitamin’, vitamin D is naturally produced in the body when exposed to sunlight. Deficiency during the darker months is extremely common in the UK and many scientists point to a connection between vitamin D deficiency and low mood. This is partly due to where in the brain our vitamin D receptors are located – the area of the brain we know to be associated with depression. It is also thought that vitamin D may influence how serotonin works, which again could influence how we’re feeling. Food sources of vitamin D include oily fish and eggs. Equally a vitamin D supplement or spray can help to combat vit D deficiency, but it’s really important not to take more than the recommended safe amount.
willing to laugh you’ll experience the same psychological and physiological benefits of laughing, plus of course the social aspect is great for your mental health. BE PRESENT When we focus on the past, we tend to feel depressed about the things we cannot change, and when we focus on the future we can feel anxious about events we
cannot control. Try to ground yourself in the present by being aware of what you’re smelling, hearing, touching, tasting and seeing. Let your senses anchor you to what’s happening right now. Simple activities such as gardening, cooking, arts and crafts or stroking a pet are great for bringing you back to the present moment. EXERCISE, SUNLIGHT AND GREEN SPACE EXPOSURE Exercise is really good for us. Not only does it help to release the feel-good endorphins that make us happy, but exercising outdoors, especially when the sun has made an appearance, can help to increase levels of vitamin D, low levels of which can lead to low mood – more about that later. Do all of that in a green leafy park and you give yourself a triple boost as green space exposure is believed to activate a primitive part of the brain involved with stress regulatory responses. Just 10 minutes a day will help you to feel better and more in control. If you can’t go out, sit near a window instead. Light therapy (to mimic summer daylight) can also help.
B VITAMINS AND LOW MOOD If energy levels are low, foods rich in B vitamins are recommended because they help to convert food into energy. B vitamin deficiency has also been linked directly to low mood, so it’s well worth topping up. Oat-based cereals (porridge especially) are a great way to start the day. MOOD-FRIENDLY FOODS AND SUPPLEMENTS Other mood-friendly foods include fish, turkey, chicken, beans, avocados, bananas, protein and wheatgerm as they help the body to produce more serotonin. Wholegrains, seasonal vegetables and fresh fruit will give you a welcome boost of energy, and foods rich in omega 3 essential fatty acids, such as fish and seeds, can help to support general brain health. For feelings of low mood or mild anxiety, the herbal remedy St. John’s Wort or Hypericum may be worth a try. Scientists believe it works by prolonging the action of serotonin and by increasing levels of melatonin. Hyperiforce tablets can help, but bear in mind that Hypericum can take up to six weeks for best results, and it can interact with other medications and affect the way they work. Check with your GP first if on prescribed medicines. You could also try A.Vogel’s Passiflora Complex Spray. A gentle, non-addictive relaxing blend of herbs for those needing to relax, it combines Passiflora (passionflower) and Lemon Balm. A B S O L U T E LY m a g a z i n e s

DOWN to EARTH The experts at Earthborn unveil the colours they see dominating the home in 2026 - and it’s all about connecting with the outside world
A
s the interiors landscape has seen a shift towards slower living, wellness and reconnecting with our surroundings, homeowners are looking to reflect these elements in their colour palettes to seek more comfort and connection with the natural world. “Earthy interiors aren’t just about colour; it’s about creating an atmosphere that feels grounded, warm and restorative, and using paint thoughtfully can make a huge impact,” explains Cathryn Sanders, Head of Creative at Earthborn. “Our Baked Earth colour palette is a great example of how to use rich, earthy shades together. From statement walls to cocooning colour drenching, thinking outside the box and being playful with paint remains a powerful tool to add interest in your home. Paint a singular wall in a darker colour to the rest of the room for an impactful feature that will draw the eye in or, as an innovative way to help a room feel more spacious, try a split colour approach by painting the top half in a lighter colour and the bottom half in a darker colour. “For homes with an open-plan layout or larger rooms where it can feel cold and impersonal, earthy shades are especially effective to anchor a space and make it feel cosier and inviting. A warm berry or clay coloured wall in a bedroom or living room promotes relaxation and comfort, complemented by natural materials.” Absolutely caught up with Cathryn to delve a little deeper into Earthborn’s trend report for 2026.

Q What cultural or lifestyle trends do you think are driving a renewed desire for calm, nature-inspired spaces? A As life speeds up, our homes are our sanctuary – a place to pause, unwind and recharge. With many of us using our homes as a base for work, rest and reconnection in the same space, there’s a growing desire for interiors that feel balanced and comfortable rather than busy or overstimulating. Paint colours play a big part in creating that sense of calm – soft, natural tones and gentle finishes help ground a space and invite stillness. We’re also seeing a strong connection to wellbeing and biophilic design, as people look to bring nature’s quiet beauty indoors through colour, texture and form. Q The Baked Earth palette feels very tactile and grounded. Can you tell us
more about the inspiration behind this collection and how it was developed? A Our Baked Earth palette is a great example of how to use rich, earthy shades together to create an atmosphere that feels grounded, warm and restorative. Featuring our Colour of the Year, Freckle, with two of our most versatile shades, Lady Bug and Peach Baby, these contrasting yet complementary colours help to create depth and visual interest – no matter which space they are used in. Peach Baby sits elegantly alongside the earthy, orange shade of Freckle, while Lady Bug adds dramatic contrast. Q Freckle is Earthborn’s Colour of the Year. How did you arrive at that decision? A Soft, earthy and inviting, Freckle is a versatile shade that brings a grounding
presence of comfort and connection to any space. Chosen not only for its visual warmth, but also for its sustainable simplicity, Freckle in our signature Claypaint finish is a naturally occurring clay colour, completely free from colourants – a true expression of our eco-friendly roots. The versatility of this colour is one of its greatest strengths. Whether chosen for an accent wall, adding a pop of colour to ceilings or introducing personality to kitchen cabinets, Freckle works beautifully alongside bold shades and neutral schemes. Q You talk about using colour to create atmosphere. What are your top tips for homeowners who want to achieve that “grounded, restorative” feeling without overwhelming their space? interior is about balance. Start by deciding the mood you want to create before you choose the colour, then layer tones from the same colour family to create a feeling rather than dominating the space with one colour. Soft contrast is key, so pair muted, harmonious shades that work together beautifully rather than compete. When done well, it creates a beautifully balanced space that feels calm and cohesive. Q You mention the split-colour approach for smaller rooms. Could you expand on how different colour placements can visually transform a space’s proportions or mood? A Paint placement is a powerful design tool. Colour drenching – where walls, ceilings and trim are all painted the same shade – creates a cocooning, intimate effect that’s perfect for cosy rooms. You can add interest by using different finishes in the same room, a satin eggshell finish on the woodwork or panelling, combined with a matt finish on the walls. If you’re after a sense of space and airiness, keep the ceiling lighter than the walls to draw the eye upward. For split-colour walls, a darker tone on the bottom and a lighter one above helps open up smaller rooms while keeping them visually interesting. It’s all about playing with balance and proportion to shape how a space ultimately feels.
64
Q Open plan homes can often feel impersonal. What role can earthy shades play in bringing warmth and personality to these larger, multifunctional areas? A In open plan homes, earthy shades work wonders for creating warmth and definition. Rich berry tones or clay colours can instantly anchor a room and make it feel more intimate. Use colour to define zones – for example, a warm terracotta in the living area paired with natural wood and woven textures helps create a sense of comfort and flow. Layering earthy paint colours with tactile materials also adds depth and personality, turning large spaces into welcoming, lived-in environments. Q Natural materials and colour seem to go hand-in-hand. How do you recommend pairing Earthborn paints with textures like wood, linen, or clay to enhance that organic feel? A Nature inspired colours and textures are a match made in heaven. Paint in a soft, matte finish, like our Claypaint, pairs beautifully with organic materials like wood, linen and clay to create interiors that feel effortlessly cohesive. Deep earthy tones evoke the warmth of sunbaked landscapes, bringing that sense of easy comfort into everyday spaces. Whether you lean toward retro, Mediterranean or modern farmhouse style, combining tactile textures with
natural shades helps your home feel grounded, authentic and full of life. Q Sustainability is an increasing priority in interior design. How does Earthborn’s approach to colour and paint formulation align with this mindful, eco-conscious ethos? A Sustainability has been at the heart of Earthborn since day one. Over 20 years ago we set out to create a genuine eco alternative to conventional paints – products that are as kind to the planet as they are to your home. Our commitment to this has never wavered. Every ingredient we use is carefully considered, which means our paints are healthier to live with and gentler on the environment. We’re proud to be the first UK paint brand licensed to carry the EU Ecolabel – an independent certification that can’t be bought, only earned. We also believe in complete transparency, which is why we list our ingredients right on the tin, so people can make informed decisions about what they’re bringing into their homes. Some of our most beautiful colours, like Freckle, come straight from natural clay pigments without any added colourants – our mindful approach across all our products, including the recyclable tins and colour cards, is proof that sustainability and style can go hand in hand.

“IT REINFORCES EVERYTHING WE STAND FOR: SERVICE, INTEGRITY AND DESIGN THAT IMPROVES HOW PEOPLE LIVE”
NATALIE AND JENNA
Q Congratulations on winning Silver at the Best Businesswomen Awards 2025 – what does this recognition mean to you? A Natalie: We’re absolutely thrilled – it’s such an honour to be recognised among so many inspiring businesswomen from across the UK. Personally, it’s a real moment of pride – we’ve both poured so much into building a studio that’s known for genuine care and attention to detail. Professionally, it validates our commitment to exceptional service and thoughtful design, not just creating beautiful spaces, but delivering an experience that makes clients feel supported every step of the way. Q How does this national recognition compare to your previous Best of Houzz Customer Service Awards? A Jenna: Winning the Best of Houzz awards for several consecutive years has always meant a lot to us because it’s based on real client feedback. This national award feels like the next step – an acknowledgment of how we’ve evolved as a business and a
reflection of the consistency and quality that underpin everything we do. Q Can you tell us how Natalie Roukin Interiors began? A Natalie: Natalie Roukin Interiors began nearly 12 years ago after I moved to St Albans and decided to turn a long-held passion for design into a business. I’d always had an instinct for how things fit together – even as a child, I loved mixing pieces in unexpected ways to create something that felt unique. That creative eye gradually evolved from fashion into interiors once I had my own home to design, and it quickly became a true passion. After many years working as an executive PA, I retrained in interior design and soon realised this was where I was meant to be. What started as a small local studio has grown and evolved over time, especially since Jenna and I began working together five years ago. Q How did you two come to work together? A Natalie: We met through the design
community and instantly clicked, we both had a great eye for design, shared the same approach to creating cohesive spaces and quickly realised we could trust each other’s instincts. We also just got on – there was an instant sense of ease and excitement for every project from the very start. Our ways of working are incredibly aligned, and we naturally complement each other’s strengths. Where one of us might lead on the creative concept, the other brings in the practical detail – together, it’s the complete package. Clients often say they love having two perspectives but one shared vision, and that collaboration has truly shaped the next chapter of our studio. Q You describe your philosophy as “great design starts with listening”. What does that look like in practice? A Natalie: It really is the foundation of everything we do. The first part of our process is spending time understanding how our clients live, what frustrates them in their current space and what they want
to feel when they walk through the door. We ask a lot of questions, observe how they use their rooms, and sometimes pick up on things they don’t even realise themselves. That insight shapes every decision and ensures the design truly fits their lifestyle. Q Could you share a recent project that really captures your approach? A Jenna: One of our favourite recent projects was for a family who travel often and wanted a space that felt like a sanctuary when they returned. We created a cohesive palette throughout their home, blending calm tones and natural textures for a sense of flow. Every detail was considered – from bespoke joinery to lighting that transitions seamlessly from day to evening. It’s a perfect example of balancing style, comfort and functionality in equal measure. Q How has being based in St Albans shaped your business – do you find your local community influences your work? A Natalie: Absolutely. St Albans has such a strong design sensibility – people here value quality, craftsmanship and comfort. Many of our clients are professionals with busy lives who want their homes to feel calm and considered. The city’s mix of period properties and modern builds keeps our work interesting too. Q Looking ahead, how do you hope this award will help shape the next chapter for Natalie Roukin Interiors? A Natalie: This award feels like the perfect springboard for our next evolution. It reinforces everything we stand for – service, integrity, and design that genuinely improves how people live. As we move forward, we’re excited to build on that foundation with new collaborations and even more bespoke projects. It’s about continuing to grow while staying true to what’s always made our studio special: creating beautiful, functional homes that feel deeply personal.

MADE FOR YOU Harvey Jones: a kitchen designed around the way you live
Harvey Jones' designers transform spaces both aesthetically and functionally
E
very home reaches a moment when the kitchen needs to do more. It must offer better flow, more intelligent storage and a sense of ease that supports the way you live. When you realise your kitchen no longer matches how you cook, gather and entertain, the next step is to design a space shaped entirely around you. For almost 50 years, Harvey Jones has designed and handcrafted bespoke kitchens for homes across the UK. Clients choose them because they combine the individuality of a boutique maker with the reassurance and consistency of a leading national brand. Their designers bring deep expertise to every project, transforming spaces both aesthetically and functionally, and ensuring each detail feels personal and purposeful. They work closely with you to understand how you live: the way you move through the room, how you entertain, how you cook, and the daily rituals that matter. They then tailor every element, preparation zones, storage, lighting, colour and flow to create a kitchen that feels calm, intuitive and beautifully resolved. And the design doesn’t stop at the kitchen. Homeowners increasingly want the rest of the home to work just as hard: utility rooms, pantries, laundry spaces, boot rooms and other functional areas. Harvey Jones crafts these rooms with the same made-to-order cabinetry and precision. Craftsmanship remains at the heart of everything they do. They build each kitchen in their Cambridgeshire workshop using traditional joinery for strength and longevity, then hand-paint every piece so you can refresh the finish as your style evolves.
Their nationwide showrooms provide the first glimpse of what’s possible. Each space showcases their craftsmanship, their design breadth and the latest materials and technologies from their trusted partners. Guided by experienced designers, visiting a showroom feels inspiring and personal. As Harvey Jones Designer, Lewis Buckley, says: “A bespoke kitchen should feel as though it could only ever belong to the person it was created for.” With the Harvey Jones Winter Sale underway, all deposits placed before 31st January 2026 will enjoy 30% off kitchen cabinetry. A
t Charlotte Bucciero Interiors, they’re proud of their growing team and the strong network of collaborators they've built over the years, the results of which can be seen in one project in particlar. The Green Trees Project was a full house design that included almost every room of this lovely five bedroom property. Charlotte and the team started with the kitchen, diner and living room designs, where they have added colour and pattern to floors and window dressing. This includes a choice of soft pink to the walls to contrast with the blue/grey kitchen units and added check cork floor tiles for sound reduction and a playful element. Bespoke furniture has been added such as window seats/storage in the dining room alongside a wall to wall unit in the living room to host books, trinkets and family treasures. More hallway storage and guest bedroom storage keeps these spare rooms nice and tidy all year round too. The lovely cloakroom has had a full makeover by removing a full wall covering of grey tiles to make way for wooden panelling details for a softer touch to the walls. The team have chosen a stunning 'sunset' tile design to be a fun feature in this bathroom, which has been matched with a pink wall hung basin and an organic shaped mirror for playful touches. The study room was designed as a relaxing room to go and work in, whilst doubling up as a spare bedroom with built

in storage to hide all work related admin when not in use. The client’s love for travelling has been reflected through their art and colour choices around the room. The piece de resistance, though, is the en-suite bathroom. What a luxury to have this modern en-suite with an extra large walk-in shower to get ready every morning! The team have used a modern yet calm palette for this bathroom with the terrazzo flooring and deep green shower tiles. The brass details complement the stone basins very nicely. EDUCATION • Q&A
Q Hertfordshire is being described as the “Hollywood of the UK”. What’s driving that growth? A It’s a combination of several factors. First and foremost, Hertfordshire already enjoys a cluster of world-class studios and production facilities. Leavesden, in particular, is expanding dramatically: Warner Bros. has announced plans to add roughly 400,000 sq ft of production and support space, increasing its number of soundstages from 19 to 29. This expansion is expected to create up to 4,000 direct and indirect jobs and boost the UK economy by more than £200 million annually. For Hertfordshire, this is huge – it amplifies the region’s attractiveness as a filming and production hub, gives local infrastructure and talent real opportunities, and places the region firmly on the map for both feature films and high-end television. Q What inspired the creation of Brilliant Film Academy, and how does it differ from other youth film programmes or university film schools? A My inspiration came from realising there was a gap in the local ecosystem: we had studios, we had productions, but many local youths didn’t have a clear route in. I trained in theatre from age 15 and moved into producing; I saw first-hand the difference that experience, access and clarity make. Brilliant Film Academy is different because it is very hands-on, practical, and geared to young people aged 11-19. We’re not offering a purely academic media-studies style programme. Instead, we offer weekly practical sessions (three hours each weekend) where students write scripts, storyboard, operate cameras, edit, do sound and constantly make films. We also emphasise building a real portfolio, accessing industry connections (we have links with BBC, Hertfordshire Film Office and London production companies) and offering early work experience and shadowing opportunities.
Q How do you balance creative freedom with teaching the technical and professional discipline that film sets demand? A It’s a balancing act, but a very rewarding one. On the one hand, you want young people to explore their creativity, to tell stories, experiment, and be bold. That’s part of what makes filmmaking exciting. On the other hand, working on a real set means you must understand discipline: meeting deadlines, being reliable, understanding roles (camera, sound, lighting, assistant), communicating clearly and working as a team. In our sessions, students have creative freedom – they choose stories, collaborate, shoot and edit. But we also provide clear structure: defined roles, pre-production planning, schedules and deliverables. Over time, I emphasise the professional mindset – this is a craft and trade as well as a creative endeavour. That duality is key. Q Many young people are passionate about film but don’t know how to break into the industry. How does BFA bridge that gap? A That’s exactly what motivated us. We provide three key elements: skills, experience and connections. Skills: practical filmmaking training; Experience: real-life film-making projects, portfolio pieces, festival submissions; Connections: guest workshops, studio tours, affiliations that expose students to the industry ecosystem. In short, we aim to demystify the path so that young people can see “I can do that role, I can get into that crew” rather than thinking “that’s only for people in London or at university”. Q How important is it to you that local Hertfordshire talent benefits
from the film industry’s expansion – rather than opportunities going only to London-based applicants? A It’s absolutely central. The expansion of studios in Hertfordshire presents a tremendous opportunity for local young people to access the film industry without having to commute to London or relocate. That’s part of the reason we founded BFA here. We want Hertfordshire to be more than a location; it should be a talent base, a production crew base, a home for training, not just for productions bringing in crews from elsewhere. Q Where do you see Brilliant Film Academy in five or ten years’ time? A In five years, I expect us to have a significantly larger cohort of students, a broader offering perhaps incorporating more post-production, visual-effects, AR/ VR, and stronger direct pipelines into studio employment, apprenticeships and production companies. I also expect our alumni to be working in junior crew roles across Hertfordshire studios or even leading their own micro productions. In ten years, I see Hertfordshire’s creative sector with a mature ecosystem: locally trained crew, locally based post-production houses, maybe even local independent film companies whose roots are regional. Studios such as Leavesden will be fully integrated with regional training and talent supply chains, not importing all crews from London or overseas. And I hope Brilliant Film Academy will be a recognised feeder institution for that ecosystem, known for producing talented young filmmakers and production crew members.

SCO MUSIC MAKING DAY

MUSIC
The Association of British Orchestras is highlighting the lifelong value of music education, whatever young people’s future pathway
T
he Association of British Orchestras (ABO) is highlighting the value of studying music at school – and its positive impact in diverse careers. The aim is to raise awareness of the social and economic impact this has on the UK and its industries. Linking to its ‘An Orchestra in Every School’ initiative, the ABO is targeting young people choosing GCSE and A-level subjects for the 2026 academic year and beyond. The aim is to emphasise how live music making delivers a diverse skillset and benefits wellbeing and work-life balance. A recent survey of adults who make music in their leisure time found that transferable skills, including practice and perseverance (89%), focus and concentration (87%), and teamwork and collaboration (85%) proved vital in
respondents’ career paths. The survey, conducted by Making Music in collaboration with the ABO, also revealed that for almost 80% of respondents, music education developed performance and presentation skills transferable to their working life. Almost half of respondents have used these skills in non-music or nonSTEM professions and over a quarter cite a direct skills benefit in their STEM career. Respondents find music helps with areas such as social skills, physical awareness and proprioception. The most common professions which respondents work in are financial services, medicine, emergency services and religion. More than a fifth work in education. Almost 80% of respondents play in an ensemble, orchestra or band and listen to music at home in their leisure time. Respondents noted how live music helps them balance home and working life. “Live music making in all its forms develops a range

of skills that can be utilised in any career path,” says Sophie Lewis, Chair of the ABO. “There are numerous benefits to having access to live music-making experiences from a young age, whether that is academic achievements, developing confidence, creativity or improvements to mental and physical wellbeing.” Laura Baxter, Creative Learning Director of Scottish Chamber Orchestra (SCO), says: “Access to high-quality music education, and all the knowledge, joy and connection that brings, opens doors that help children and young people move from school into the world around them and to do so confidently, creatively and in community with others”. While there has been some growth in the number of GCSE Music entries over the past two years, a lack of school resources across many parts of the state sector means some young people rely on alternate approaches to develop their music-making skills – including online tutorials and self-study. The ABO and its members pledged to deliver over 1,000 live music-making opportunities this year, with the aim of giving over a million young people the opportunity to experience live music. These activities take the form of workshops, training sessions and live performances. Joining together Independent senior school, St Albans School, has been actively welcoming girls onto its campus for a range of interactive events, open days and focus groups designed to encourage the incoming girls to help shape the school environment they want to see next September, when the school will extend its co-educational provision from Year 7. Prospective families of both boys and girls took part in an interactive itinerary where they engaged in a range of activities across various departments, guided by current pupils, including St Albans Schools’ Sixth Form girls and boys, who showcased the school’s vibrant culture with a special tour of the 1,000-year-old campus. Highlights also included a ‘first look’ display of the new girls’ uniform being launched in September 2026, alongside detailed plans for the Lower School Hub – a dedicated area in the Corfield Building that will house the incoming Year 7 cohort. The Hub serves as a ‘school within a school’ providing a warm, nurturing and selfcontained environment. st-albans.herts.sch.uk
A group of Year 6 and Year 8 pupils from York House, a local independent prep school on the outskirts of Croxley Green, have returned home from an exciting week-long scuba diving trip to Malta having achieved their PADI (Professional Association of Diving Instructors) Scuba Diver or Junior Open Water certification. This is the first PADI qualification the pupils can work towards from the age of 10 years. As the local Hertfordshire, North London and Buckinghamshire hub for dive training, York House also offers weekend diver training at the school in collaboration with Oyster Diving. As part of the school’s outdoor education ethos, the pupils were invited to further their diving skills and work towards their first certification during a trip to the island of Malta. york-house.com
Top marks Beechwood Park School, near St Albans, has announced that the Independent Schools Inspectorate (ISI) has awarded the school a Significant Strength in its most recent inspection report, alongside confirming full compliance across all regulatory standards. The ISI highlighted the exceptional personal development of pupils at Beechwood Park, stating: “Pupils communicate confidently about their achievements, any challenges faced and how they might resolve these. Pupils develop self-knowledge and self-confidence beyond what is expected at their age; they recognise and communicate their strengths and
demonstrate resilience when articulating what they do to overcome challenges. This is a significant strength of the school.” This commendation, coupled with a complete set of ‘MET’ standards, underscores the school’s unwavering commitment to excellence in education, pastoral care, and whole-child development. beechwoodpark.com

The Kingdom at
The Grove A whole new golf experience is arriving in Hertfordshire in 2026
T
aylorMade Golf Company, an industry leader in technology and innovation, in partnership with The Grove in Hertfordshire, are excited to announce a world-class testing and fitting facility, The Kingdom at The Grove. The Kingdom, which is located at TaylorMade’s global headquarters in Carlsbad, California, has achieved almost cult-like status by offering the most comprehensive fitting experience in golf. From Scottie Scheffler to Rory McIlroy, Charley Hull and Tommy Fleetwood, The Kingdom provides the framework for fitting the world’s most iconic athletes, and golfers of all abilities are invited to have the same experience that unites the art and science of golf. At The Kingdom, every shot is hit with a purpose, every result measured, and every piece of data analysed: it is a truly unrivalled golf experience. Scheduled to open in the spring of 2026, The Kingdom at The Grove will establish a leading destination for Tour players, future stars, elite amateurs, and avid golfers to immerse themselves in the TaylorMade brand, products and people. Specifically, The Kingdom at The Grove will feature highly experienced and skilled fitters utilising Trackman, Foresight, GEARS, and Quintic alongside the entire range of TaylorMade products for players to test, replicating many of the supreme offerings at TaylorMade’s US headquarters. Benefiting from a visually striking, sustainable building, the facility will include three state-of-the-art fitting bays, a putting studio, a custom workshop, a lounge and a locker room. The building is made from a timber structure with hidden solar panels on the roof helping to reduce its carbon footprint.
82
In addition to the new state-of-the-art building, the entire driving range at The Grove is being reconstructed by Kyle Phillips Golf Course Design. The new grass driving range at The Kingdom will be around 7.4 acres and 320 yards (293 metres) long, with a 600 sq metre teeing area in front of the building. Kyle Phillips’s expertise will blend the inspiration of The Kingdom in Carlsbad with the overall design of The Grove to create strategic shaping and placement of the target greens. The facility also boasts its own workshop, so in many cases golfers can see their clubs being built and walk away with them on the same day. thegrove.co.uk
