I must admit I have never been one to be overly affected post-Christmas, I always see the new year as an opportunity for a fresh start and tackle those things I have long put off (like sorting out a new car). But there are many that do need a little pick-me-up, which is where we come in. We have devoted this issue to your health and wellbeing, plus highlight the many things to be excited about in Essex across 2026. We visit some of the county's finest spa retreats – well, someone has to do it – and have rounded up ten of the best. We interview two Essex locals doing amazing things for their communities, show how you can detox without the drama – and ever fancy your own sauna in the garden. It is not beyond the realms of possibility. We obviously believe Essex to be the most exciting county in the UK, and our 2026 bucket list preview certainly backs up that belief. KIS S E S If you are looking for a band to keep an eye on in 2026, XO may just be the one. One of the five-piece, Essex’s Zoe Miller, explains how they came to be and why life is full of fun By MARK KEBBLE
I
was just about to start sixth form when the Spice Girls exploded on the music scene. Being a fully fledged indie kid at the time, I certainly didn’t embrace them in public – but can now admit to being taken with some of their music, which I quietly listened to at home before switching to some Oasis and cranking up the volume. I am intrigued to know what my 16-yearold self would have made of XO. Formed by Polydor Records in late 2024, the group unites five vibrant voices – Summer Askew, Shali Bordoni, Zoe Miller, Emmy Statham and Reanna Sujeewon – drawing on their diverse backgrounds across Essex, London, Liverpool, Derbyshire and Hong Kong. Debut singles Ponytail and Lovesick featured an irresistible blend of electropop, raw energy and grounded storytelling that has captured early acclaim. In November 2025 they released their debut EP Fashionably Late, a snapshot of youth – full of dance-pop optimism, emotional highs and “real-life” vibes. The sound, to me, is much grittier than anything the Spice Girls produced, but no
less infectious, a point I put to the Essex member of the group, Zoe Miller. “Every girl group is different and to try and recreate something as iconic as the Spice Girls is big shoes to fill and it wouldn’t be right for us,” she responds. “We naturally just created this sound that felt like us, the XO sound. We can’t wait for you to hear what’s to come.” If it’s anything like spending time with Zoe, then we are in for a rollicking ride. Her enthusiasm is contagious and there’s no doubting her genuine excitement to be in XO and love for her fellow band members – despite the five of them only meeting for the first time just over a year ago. “We all went to an audition our management were holding, all confused about what it was we were auditioning for!” Zoe laughs. “The brief was pretty vague. After a long day, five chairs were set out in front of the panel and they were explaining to us how excited they were as they weren’t really expecting to piece the group together that day, but something felt so right once they’d seen us together. “It was a dream that didn’t ever really feel real,” she adds. “Something that we had all dreamed of but always felt so
out of reach just became our reality and we had no idea! It still doesn’t feel real sometimes. That day I remember Wayne, our manager, saying this isn’t a job, it’s a lifestyle, it’s a big commitment. And he was bang on. It’s certainly not a job, you never work a day when you do what you love.” Did they all hit it off straight away? “Yes, 100%, which honestly caught us all by surprise. Five girls being thrown together could’ve been carnage! And don’t get me wrong, we are always causing chaos… but from the first time we met after the audition, without even having a conversation about anything, we were immediately aligned on this journey. Going into something new can be daunting, but we were all at peace with the fact we had each other. No matter what, we were going through this journey together.” Although the journey is only just beginning, there has been quite the response to Fashionably Late. Its six songs are there to show the arc of a night out, from getting ready (Rush Hour) and taking charge (Candy) to catching feelings (Lovesick) and going back to your mates (Real Friends). “It’s ironic really because we haven’t actually had a feral girls A B S O L U T E LY m a g a z i n e s

night out yet,” Zoe laughs. “It’s pending! We have lots to get done first. But we have had countless girls nights in after shows, shoots and studio days though. There is no feeling quite like a girls night. Getting ready together, being silly in the club, and then the stumble back home and debrief over a pizza while you take your make up off. That is girlhood! And we want our music to capture that feeling. That and getting five girls to be ready on time… we are working on it.” Real Friends was created with a touch of pop royalty, considering it was co-written with Charli XCX. “From the moment we heard the demo we were obsessed, and hearing Charli’s vocal on it had our jaws on the floor,” Zoe says. “There were some lyrics that weren’t true to us, and so I re-wrote some of the verses, which is something I have always been passionate about. Writing music has always been an outlet for me, so to get the opportunity to co-write with Charli for us girls… Wow, just wow. What I learnt was music shouldn’t be over thought, it should

be felt, music is to create a feeling. It’s so easy to question every word and decision you make, but no-one can create or think the way you do. So I learnt to trust what I feel and what I create, and I’m beyond grateful Charli gave me the opportunity to do so.” That song, though, isn’t the most personal to Zoe from the EP. “That has to be Silly Boy,” she says. “Me and Shali wrote this song a month after knowing each other. All women can unfortunately connect on the fact that we are surrounded by silly boys. It came from seeing a lady being cat-called while we were in the back of an uber, and so the whistle became the motif of the song. The day we recorded this song in the studio was the day after me and my ex broke up, and I had just had surgery five days before and should have been in bed recovering. But I knew I needed to be in the studio with my girls to keep my mind off of

everything. They are truly the reason I could just pick myself up and keep my head up at that time. It was the best timing to finally record that song and I’m so grateful for the girls for being there for me through that.” XO’s first headline tour sold out, and they hit the road again later in 2026, but when not in the studio or on stage, Hockley is home for Zoe. “Where I live, I’m 20 minutes from the sea, five minutes from the woods, five minutes from fields, and 40 minutes from the city. It’s the perfect balance of city life, but also with the greenery and nature. Plus,” she smiles, “you can’t beat a pub garden in Essex once the sun’s in full force.” Essex, too, has left its mark on the Zoe we see before us. “One thing about Essex is everyone has got the gift of the gab,” she laughs. “We can talk for England! Everyone is always so social and up for a yap and I love that. I grew up around
lots of boys which is always a humbling experience and so there isn’t often much that can offend me, that’s probably where my confidence comes from. There’s often a stereotype with Essex girls, the tans, the teeth, the glamour. I’ve always dressed to feel comfy and never really been one to dress to the nines, but that’s the beauty of Essex. No-one cares! It isn’t my thing, but my girls will dress up to the nines and look incredible. I think that’s the best part of XO, we are just allowed to be ourselves.” Which is exactly how Zoe’s describes what XO are all about. “Unapologetic is the word that we have always been described as since the audition. We want to encourage the younger generation that it’s okay to be authentically you. If it makes you happy, who cares what anyone else thinks. There’s only one you, so why hide that? We are five girls from five different backgrounds, but with the same passion, to sing and dance. We aren’t striving for perfection, we are just girls enjoying the journey and we are ready for people to enjoy the ride with us.” Strap in. xoofficial.co.uk

he new year is a great opportunity for people to get out and explore some fantastic places on their doorstep. Essex is full of well-known attractions, plus lots of secret nooks and crannies that are just waiting to be discovered. Visit Essex, the county’s tourism organisation, takes us on a tour of some of the ‘bucket list’ places that are a must to visit in 2026.
ssex has one of the longest coastlines in the UK, so this is the perfect place to start. Our county is blessed with 350-miles of seaside resorts, charming fishing towns, quiet backwaters and estuaries full of wonderful wildlife and stunning views. There are so many ways to experience these stunning coastal environments. Step on the Maritime Walking Trail in Harwich and discover its historic old town and Ha’penny pier. Or take a boat trip from Harwich for some seal watching along the county’s saltmarshes. Experience the very best of beach life by fossil hunting on Mersea Island or Walton-on-the-Naze. When the weather is warmer, take a paddleboard along the county’s inlets, rivers and creeks. Explore the swirling saltmarshes and paddle by the iconic lightship at Tollesbury. Wherever you end up, Essex's coastline never ceases to amaze.

outhend-on-Sea is a city with plenty to see and do, it offers everything from a traditional English seaside resort to modern art. he Good Food Guide’s inaugural Top 100 Best Pubs have been announced and, coming in at number 24, The White Hart Inn has been ranked as one of the UK’s finest. Situated in the heart of peaceful Mersea Island near Colchester, just a few minutes’ walk from the beach, contemporary pub-with-rooms The White Hart Inn opened in summer 2022 and offers an open plan dining room and bar, plus outdoor seating in the walled terraced garden. Head chef is Ed Campbell, an Essex native who started his career at The Anchor at Nayland before several years in London working for the Galvin Brothers at Galvin Bistrot & Bar, La Chapelle and Galvin at Windows in Mayfair. He was sous chef at Baker Hospitality’s Church Street Tavern in Colchester between 2016 until late 2018, before leaving to take his first head chef role at The Lion in Earls Colne. Ed joined The White Hart Inn as head chef in November 2023 – and here tells Absolutely what makes the pub extra special. Q You’ve worked at some highly regarded restaurants. What are the standout lessons you’ve taken from each kitchen? A Work as hard as you can. Most of the time, when performances aren’t perfect, if your colleagues can see you’ve put the effort in, you’ll be ok. Do it right or do it twice. At that level, with constant supervision and superiors expecting perfection, just do it right the first time around. Under pressure the last thing you want to do is make lengthy prep jobs twice and have that waste hanging over your day.
“With such local produce on our doorstep, why would we not use it?” Q Was there a particular moment or mentor that helped shape the chef you are now? A I was very fortunate in my early years to work with Carl Shillingford. He was the head chef at The White Hart in Nayland many years ago when owned and operated by Michel Roux Sr. When that unfortunately closed, he found himself as head chef at The Anchor in Nayland. In a village pub, having someone of that pedigree as your head chef in your first job was an incredible advantage. Dave Wall (the same at the Unruly Pig now) was also a big part of my younger development. He rose to sous chef whilst we were both there and the biggest lessons taught by him and the rest of the team was discipline and the politics of working within a kitchen brigade. My largest period with the Galvins in London was at the Bistro de Luxe. Luigi Vespero was the head chef. I also worked and lived with a friend from my time at the institute. These people in my early adult life played a huge part in the way I addressed responsibility both personally and professionally.

Q What motivated your move from the London fine-dining scene back to Essex and to Mersea Island specifically? A I met a girl – simple as that! That was my absolute only interest in moving home. In terms of Mersea Island, that was completely down to [White Hart Inn owner] Piers Baker. The timing was right and due to my time working as sous at Church Street Tavern it just made perfect sense. Q How would you describe your food style at The White Hart Inn? A Modern, ingredient lead, local, simple and surprising, and honest. Q How does the local produce influence your menu creation? A The expectation of the locality is everything. Locals and tourists alike expect it. Plus, with it on our doorstep, why would you not? “From top to bottom, I can count on two hands the products we don’t make” changes, there are always a couple of dishes on each menu that I feel represent me as a professional – currently that’s the Crab Taco. That takes my love for South American and Pan-Asian cooking, blended neatly with locality of British crab, bacon and hand-picked garden sage. Then from memory, a homage to Galvins, and my take on their Iman Byaldi (stuffed aubergine). Q How often do you change the menu? A We change the entire menu every
eight weeks, or as things go in or out of season. Predictability of the British weather and seasons is becoming harder and harder. The biggest influence is

seasonality. The second influence is what is going on in other places and from chefs – for example the whole team here is absolutely obsessed with Fallow & Roe Restaurants content in all socials. A few dishes and specials recently have had elements inspired by their content. Q Do you work closely with local fishermen, farmers, and producers? A We work and have a great relationship with Haywards Oysters of Mersea Island. We get daily deliveries of Rock Oysters and first dibs on their Native Oysters when they come into season around October. They are in a lot shorter supply due to water temperature warming. We use Ricky at Mersea Island Seafood on Mersea. His family has a small fleet of boats that go out daily. We then also work with fish markets in Brixham as the range of fish in Mersea waters is quite limited. Our main butcher is Willsher & Sons in Marks Tey, who source free-range pork from Blythburgh in Suffolk, Abberton lamb and mutton and rare breed beef from East Anglia and around the UK. Chickens and ducks come from free range farms in Dorset and the Cotswolds. They have also been kind enough to allow some team members to go and get some butchery experience with them in their shop. There are also some individuals in Mersea who supply us with the garden surplus whether it is medlars, mulberries, quince or honey.
Q How important is sustainability to your kitchen, and what practices have you introduced to support it? A We strive to be a zero-waste kitchen. We do as much of our own fishmonger and butchery as possible. Things as simple as chicken, when we use it on our menu, we use the whole bird – from sandwiches to stocks, to mains and terrines. Nothing is wasted. That goes for the same for whole fish and vegetables. Q What’s one behind-the-scenes element of running the kitchen at The White Hart Inn that diners might be surprised to learn? A From top to bottom I can count on two hands the products we don’t make. I’d love to make that one hand and eventually no hands. But we make for the most part absolutely everything. From bread to dish-specific pastas, to complex sauces and terrines. Q What are your ambitions for The White Hart Inn as we head into 2026? A Everything to date has come organically and I’d love to continue that natural progression. But my main focus is to keep the team together and happy, and continue to enjoy the work and the role. These things will drive the natural progression of the team, myself and The White Hart.

Q What first drew you to the Gyrotonic method, and how did it change your approach to movement and wellness? A I was first drawn to the Gyrotonic Expansion System when my first daughter was diagnosed with scoliosis, a spinal condition which causes curvature and pain. It appealed because it offered something I hadn’t experienced before. From my very first session, I felt my body decompress, expand, and reorganise. It awakened a new awareness in me. Instead of pushing or forcing, Gyrotonic taught me how to move with fluidity and intelligence. It completely reshaped my understanding of alignment, nervous-system regulation, and the connection between breath, spine, and emotional wellbeing. It wasn’t just exercise; it was healing.

Q How does Gyrotonic training differ from Pilates or yoga in its impact on the body and nervous system? A Pilates is a wonderful practice, but Gyrotonic is unique in the way it integrates spiralling, circular, and wave-like movements. A My daughters have given me a deeper sense of purpose and reinforced my belief that movement truly can transform lives. When you feel that kind of change in your own body you feel a responsibility to share it with others. Q What do you love most about teaching Essex clients and seeing them rediscover confidence in their bodies? A I love watching people realise they are capable of more than they thought. Seeing someone walk out of a session feeling taller, freer, or simply more at home in their own body is incredibly rewarding. For so many, it’s not just physical change, it’s emotional and personal growth.

HAVEN How Victoria Lietch turned past trauma into a calming wellness retreat in the heart of Ongar Q How has your own healing journey shaped the ethos and atmosphere of Angel Wellness Retreat? A I needed to create a real haven, a happy place because life can be tough. I always portrayed I was ok, I was happy, when in fact that was so far from the truth. I had just escaped a highly toxic and abusive relationship that I had been trapped in for many years, but I didn’t have anywhere to retreat to. I wanted to create an environment where people could just come, relax and smile, laugh even, and be themselves with no judgement. They could heal. Something different to their everyday lives and they could just leave feeling more rejuvenated, stronger, more resilient, and more joyful than when they arrived. I wanted to create the kind of place that I wished I could have gone to when things were really difficult for me. So I created Angel Wellness Retreat, a really beautiful place where you can take off all your stress. Where you are looked after. When you leave the retreat at the end of your treatments, you’re hopefully going to feel much better about yourself. Q How do you support guests who are overcoming trauma, anxiety, or burnout? A Because of my experience and my own personal battles, I tend to find that people
come to us when they need to retreat, they need to relax, they need to feel rejuvenated, and they will often come to us with trauma, anxiety, and burnout. What we would say is we are a judgment-free space. So however you present yourself to Angel Wellness Retreat, however you are, however you feel, however you look, is okay by us. We are a judgment-free zone. We all have our stories, our backgrounds, our demons. So you don’t need to be in any way worried, in any way concerned about whatever it is you bring with you when you come to visit us, because however you turn up is ok by us. We are there to hold space for you, we’re there to look after you for the day. I mentioned before that we’re really there to hear what your needs are and what it is that you want to gain from your visit. Because whatever you want to gain is what we want to give you. Q How do you blend traditional spa treatments with deeper wellness practices at Angel Wellness Retreat? A The one thing I would say is that we love a bit of research! We want to know what works in the industry and what works for the people of Essex. We will go away and we’ll research traditional treatments,
modern treatments, and wellness practices. What you’ll find at Angel Wellness Retreat is it’s an amalgamation of everything we’ve learned and the research we have done. You know, it was 20 years ago that I went on a retreat in Thailand for gut health and detoxification, and I brought back all of those learnings and I’ve deployed them in Angel Wellness Retreat. It really means something to us and our clients. Q Ongar has a lovely, calm countryside feel – how important is the setting to the healing process? A This is what I love about our retreat
location. We feel we are completely away from the hustle and bustle of a high street, but actually we are not that far so when you hear the word ‘retreat’, it genuinely is a retreat from everyday busy life. What clients tell me all the time is that as soon as they drive up through the wooded driveway they just feel calmer. It’s almost like the experience starts as soon as you get to the location, which doesn’t happen with many spa retreats. You don’t have to find a car park or deal with busy waiting rooms. We have all that covered. It’s tranquil, and from our upstairs treatment rooms you can overlook beautiful fields and grounds. We’ve got a lovely outdoor area, and we’re expanding that when the weather gets warmer. It feels like an experience rather
than just a treatment, people feel calm and it’s spacious, which is great for healing. Q What are your future plans for Angel Wellness Retreat? A We’ve only really been at the retreat since February 2025, after relocating The Angel Clinic Loughton to here, so it’s still quite new. But there’s a lot in the works: our outdoor space and experiences are growing, with a padel court launching next year. We’ll also be adding fire and ice experiences with a deep plunge and sauna, which will be installed early next year. We’re planning to build a detached boardroom for away days and workshops for external clients. There’ll be more events in our backfield this coming year, and we’re onboarding new dynamic treatments and therapists. It’s never quiet here, we’re always expanding to give as much as we can and look after a wide range of clients.

he January detox has become somewhat of a post-Christmas institution in its own right. A popular way to repent for festive excesses and indulgence, the detox industry is estimated to be worth millions. But can detoxing be bad for you?

of a detox is very simple – you’re aiming to rid the body of all those nasty toxins and chemicals that have built up over the course of your celebratory drinks and meals in December. If you can get rid of these chemicals, your body is supposed to be cleansed and you’re meant to feel reinvigorated and revitalised with the added bonus of shedding a few pounds along the way. Sounds great… what’s not to like?

Absolutely visits a stunning conversion in Wapping to discover how industrial heritage combined with contemporary design
S
et within a converted warehouse located within historical Wapping, New Crane Wharf is the latest residential project by Havwoods. Transformed into a modern, light-filled interior by designer Interiors by Laila, the scheme combines personal touches with natural wood tones to create a spacious and contemporary home. The original flat was dark and lacked modern finishes, so the brief was to transform the home into a bright and contemporary space for the owners, whilst still retaining the original characteristics of

the warehouse. Combining timeless natural materials, sleek design elements and a handful of whimsical features in the form of playful wallpapers and soft furnishings, the result is a characterful space which is in keeping with modern day requirements. Used throughout the living spaces, Havwoods’ Blanco from the Venture Plank collection was chosen for its bright, platinum tones and classic appeal. Incorporated in a herringbone design, its light-reflecting qualities and natural colour variation add texture throughout. Partnering beautifully with the home’s soft colour palette, including blush pinks, dusty blues and soft beiges, the flooring works perfectly to balance
the apartment and create a cohesive feel. Having used Havwoods extensively in her other projects, Laila selected Blanco Herringbone for its long-lasting style, soft tones and enduring quality. Absolutely visited the project to find out a little more, chatting to Laila Patel of Interiors by Laila and Paul Moody, Global Marketing & Digital Director at Havwoods. Q What made New Crane Wharf an especially interesting or challenging project for Interiors by Laila? LAILA: New Crane Wharf was a really exciting project because it meant working inside a building with a strong industrial personality. The original brickwork, steel

columns and deep-set windows gave the space so much character, but they also limited how much we could adjust things. Instead of designing over the history, we had to work with it – bringing in warmth and comfort without losing that warehouse charm. The biggest challenge was achieving this balance while still keeping the home feeling bright and open, especially in corners where the structure created naturally darker areas.
apartment and immediately fell in love with the Blanco flooring from Havwoods, so it was already high on the list. Once we tested it in the space, it was clear it was the right choice. The pale, slightly desaturated tone lifted the interior without feeling too modern or stark, and the subtle grain worked beautifully with both the original brickwork and the cleaner, contemporary elements. It gave the whole apartment a really calm, cohesive feel.
Q Can you talk us through the process
Q How did the flooring help bridge the

building’s industrial heritage with the new contemporary aesthetic? A LAILA: The flooring is what really tied the two worlds together. Warehouses tend
to be full of hard, robust materials – brick, steel, concrete – so adding a natural timber surface brought warmth and softness back into the home. Blanco has a refined look, but still keeps that little bit of natural texture, which nods to the building’s history. At the same time, its light, clean tone feels very contemporary. It softened the industrial edges without taking away their character, which was exactly what the space needed. Q Herringbone is a timeless pattern, but also a bold design choice. homeowners, we suggest thinking about the mood they want to create, as planks tend to elongate a space and feel more contemporary, whereas parquet patterns such as herringbone or chevron add a layer of classic sophistication. Both can work beautifully; it’s about matching the pattern to the architecture and personality of the home. Q Can you expand on the technical qualities of the Blanco Herringbone boards that make them suitable for modern family living? PAUL: Blanco is part of our engineered Venture Plank collection, which means it’s constructed with multiple layers for enhanced stability and resistance to movement – making it ideal for underfloor heating and everyday use. The surface is finished with a durable UV oil that enhances the natural grain while offering excellent protection against wear. It’s a product designed not just to look good but to perform beautifully for years to come. Q How does the Venture Plank collection reflect Havwoods’ commitment to sustainable design? PAUL: Sustainability sits at the heart of everything we do at Havwoods. The Venture Plank collection is sourced from responsibly managed European forests and is fully FSC® certified. We work closely with our suppliers to ensure ethical production and traceability at every stage. Beyond the material itself, engineered wood uses less slow-growing hardwood than solid planks, making it a more environmentally conscious choice without compromising on quality or appearance. Q Were there any bespoke elements, installation considerations, or custom finishing techniques involved to

ensure the flooring complemented the warehouse architecture? LAILA: Absolutely. Warehouse buildings are rarely perfectly level, and this one was no exception. A lot of attention went into preparing the subfloor so the timber would sit cleanly across the space. We also had to navigate transitions around original thresholds and steel columns, so some board lengths and layouts were customised to keep everything seamless. Q What trends in residential flooring and interior design does this project reflect, and how do you see these evolving? LAILA: This project really taps into the trend toward lighter, natural finishes that make homes feel calm, open, and spacious. People are increasingly drawn to materials that feel genuine and are easy to live with. We’re also seeing more demand for continuous flooring throughout whole apartments or houses, which visually enlarges the space.
Looking ahead, I think sustainability and timber provenance will become even more central, along with finishes that age well. Q For homeowners inspired by this project, what key considerations should they keep in mind when choosing wood flooring for smaller or lower-light spaces? LAILA: Go lighter: pale tones help reflect light and make a room feel bigger. Keep it consistent: running the same floor throughout the home creates visual flow and avoids breaking up the space. Choose subtle grain: too much contrast or knotting can overwhelm small rooms. Opt for matte finishes: they look softer and more natural. Think long-term: pick a finish and construction that can handle dayto-day living. Consider the architecture: make sure the wood works with existing features like exposed brick or dark window frames.

A
s the world evolves, Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths (STEM) are becoming increasingly prevalent in our everyday lives. From medical breakthroughs to technical innovations, daily life is increasingly interlinked with the work being done in STEM industries. For the next generation, STEM opportunities in schools not only offer young people the chance to enter an emerging and desirable career path, but also build up a roster of soft skills that are essential to thriving in everyday life. At William de Ferrers, we see STEM education as a journey and here’s how we nurture it throughout a student’s time with us.
EXPANDING STEM LE ARNING OUTSIDE OF THE CLASSROOM Every journey starts at the beginning, and from their very first day with us, our students take part in regularly scheduled extra-curricular STEM clubs and activities. They have access to sessions and workshops surrounding Construction, Engineering, Science and more, which gives them the opportunity to explore STEM outside of the classroom and take their understanding and knowledge of a subject to the next level. For example, during our Design and Technology Club, students can spend additional time using the classroom’s professional equipment to either engage with their National Curriculum projects or their own creative endeavours. This helps them to execute classroom learning practically while developing soft social and problem-solving skills. HELPING OUR STUDENTS DECIDE IF STEM IS RIGHT FOR THEM For most children, it can be challenging to know which STEM industries and subjects appeal to them by Year 9. We believe that reading curriculum descriptions to our students is much
less engaging than a hands-on approach. So, our subjects offer children practical taster days, where they can actively experience what subjects have to offer. For example, for our students interested in Design and Technology and careers in Engineering, we task them with studying engineering drawings and producing a physical item from those designs. Our students are introduced to professional equipment and are walked through working with materials, such as aluminium and 3d printed PLA plastic. These practical opportunities can strongly entice students to pursue a STEM subject by laying out a realistic portrayal of what the career will entail. By working with peers with the same level of experience, it is less intimidating for them and helps develop teamwork and adaptability skills while they familiarise themselves with the equipment. BRINGING LE ARNING TO LIFE THROUGH EXTERNAL PARTNERSHIPS If you ask anyone about their most memorable school experiences, they are typically the big events and competitions that combine learning and fun activities into a unique experience. For us, external partnerships, events and competitions are essential for nurturing the development of STEM learning. These academically stimulating opportunities are where many students fuel a lifelong passion to work towards entering STEM careers and industries. Our students have taken part in Rampaging Chariots, a STEM outreach programme, where teams build lightweight robots and send them through a series of challenges, akin to the television show Robot Wars. During this event, students developed skills in basic electronic engineering, radio control and wood and metal working, alongside furthering critical thinking skills by overcoming challenges they were presented with. Other activities
include drone racing, altitude ballooning using a Raspberry Pi, and most recently, our students built and launched their own rockets at the Stow Maries Great War Aerodrome for STEM UKROC 2025! To assist our students with event preparation, we have partnered with local industry professionals, including engineering firms, to provide expert mentorship and real-world experience. These opportunities give students the chance to engage with industry experts, explore cutting-edge technologies, and apply their learning to solve practical applications. Surrounded by likeminded, passionate peers, our students return from these experiences with renewed confidence and inspiration.

Through regular career talks from industry professionals and alumni, our students gain inspiration and a clearer understanding of the diverse opportunities available in STEM fields. Some of the guests even perform practical demonstrations, such as one former student, studying ceramics during university, who showed students the practical side of the work she does. These speakers help to provide young people with real and tangible role models and combined with the opportunities available through their time with us, they end their journey with us being confident in their ability to pursue their careers and thrive. DIMENSON Brentwood School officially opens The Sir Michael Snyder Building, celebrating a new era of boarding excellence

rentwood School has officially opened its new, purpose-built, state-ofthe-art boarding house, which was formally named The Sir Michael Snyder Building. The special opening ceremony was attended by governors and special guests. The facility was named in recognition of the outstanding service to the school of Sir Michael Snyder (OB), who served the school in various capacities, including as Governor from 1992 to 2007, Vice Chairman from 2007 to 2018, and most recently as Chairman of Governors from 2018 until 2024. The new boarding house, which has been years in the planning, is sectorleading and offers the highest standard
of accommodation and facilities. The 122 single, en-suite bedrooms located on the upper floors feature cuttingedge university-style accommodation. While Brentwood enjoys a rich history spanning nearly 500 years, the school has consistently embraced innovation. Boarding remains an essential part of this tradition, fostering cross-cultural friendships and contributing to the diversity and international outlook of our community. The fully-accessible building is designed to function as a true home away from home. It is subdivided into three main sections: separate houses for girls and boys, and a central shared hub. Open MINDS International Day of Tolerance: travelling the world at New Hall Culture Day

elebrations of International Day of Tolerance on 16th November came early at New Hall School in Chelmsford, as 177 student representatives gathered to present a remarkable 40 countries at the school’s annual student-led Culture Day. Promoting tolerance, diversity and cultural discovery, Culture Day is one of the school’s largest events of the year; its fourth edition saw over 1,000 students ‘travelling the world’ in the school’s Walkfares Canopy. From learning to toss a rugby ball at the New Zealand stand, to trying Polish, Nigerian or American sweets, and even learning to play Scottish bagpipes, the day encourages students to learn more about their peers, with an open and curious mind. A special addition to this year’s event was a stand dedicated to Rwanda, where four Rwandan Sisters showcased New Hall’s sister school
in Kigali, founded by the same religious order as New Hall School, the Canonesses of the Holy Sepulchre. The Sisters have been living in the Mission House at New Hall since July, learning English and working with the Chaplaincy Department. Suzanna Minnis, Assistant Principal of New Hall School, has supported the Culture Day Student Committee since the event’s inception in 2022. “Culture Day at New Hall is a wonderful celebration of our students’ creativity, hard work and imagination. The cultural displays and activities reflect the rich diversity of our school community and the variety of traditions, making it a truly memorable occasion,” she said. Head Girl, Louise, is a part of the student committee in charge of organising and promoting Culture Day among the school community. “I joined the committee because I enjoy exploring what makes people in our community unique and sharing my own Zimbabwean heritage. My favourite part of the day was the Mariachi band,
and I found the Indian stand to be the most impressive, with students offering hand-painted henna tattoos, and running a pop culture quiz,” Louise commented. Students’ exhibition stands were complemented by live music, including New Hall’s own DJ, Year 8 student Sahib, as well as delicious treats from local family-run restaurant Jerk Station, who have been invited to the event for the third year in a row. Year 12 full boarder Adam recently joined New Hall from Slovakia and was left enthralled by Culture Day activities. “This has been the greatest cultural exchange I’ve been to – I really enjoyed meeting new people and sharing information about Slovakia with them. New Hall has been an amazing experience so far, the boarding staff are so friendly, and they help me every day with a smile on their faces,” he enthused. anuary feels like a natural reset for the property market. Buyers pause, sellers regroup and everyone quietly asks the same question: what sort of year are we heading into? Looking at the final months of 2025, the answer appears more positive than many expected; valuations stabilised, mortgage rates were no longer the headline they once were and buyer activity was far stronger than the sentiment suggested. As we step into 2026 the theme, I believe, will be realism paired with opportunity. Sellers are becoming more aligned with true market value, which helps transactions happen more quickly and with fewer surprises. Buyers meanwhile are adapting to the “new normal” on rates and are more focused on the quality of a home, location and lifestyle rather than trying to time the market. The much discussed mansion tax is unlikely to shift the market in any dramatic way. At the upper end, those purchasing homes above £2m tend to make decisions
based on life plans rather than annual costs. We expect this part of the market to keep moving. Meanwhile the mid-market should benefit from returning confidence, particularly as sellers who delayed moving in 2025 re-enter the conversation. latella Films is run by husband-and-wife team Ben and Natalie Scarsbrook, based in Southend. As a company they have garnered multiple award nominations and wins since setting up in 2012 and pride themselves on being able to adapt film to any industry or business. In that time, they have made approximately 2,345 films and have 253 unique clients, and produce on average 300 projects a year. It’s fair to say that 2025 was a year to remember for the company. Blatella Films feature documentary Our Journey to Pride captures the incredible story of how Thurrock in Essex came together to host its first-ever Pride, celebrating diversity and community. To date, the feature documentary has been awarded 26 awards and distinctions across four continents. Blatella Films’ short film they created for Butterfly Conservation was selected for the London Nature Film Festival in London in June 2025. The film focuses on the organisation’s ‘Big City Butterflies’ project and their actions to ‘re-wild’ London by creating wildflower meadows to support native species that are on the decline and educational initiatives for people across London. Natalie herself was awarded a Silver Award at the prestigious Best Businesswomen Awards 2025 in the Best Creative Business category. Natalie is extremely proud of this award, as being a female filmmaker, it feels especially significant as the industry is still very male dominated. The Best Businesswomen Awards were established to recognise and celebrate the achievements of

Natalie is now working on a new upcoming feature documentary called Witchcraft & Stilettos, looking at redefining the term ‘Essex Girl’. With this new film, Natalie is exploring her interest in feminism and activism through filmmaking, and it combines a life-long passion for storytelling and history. The idea for the film came about after meeting with the
Essex Girls Liberation Front and author Syd Moore and following their ongoing dictionary definition campaign and Syd’s decades of historical research. When you hear the phrase ‘Essex Girl’ you may think of the classic 80s version of her – blonde hair, revealing clothing, and white stilettos. Or perhaps you think of the more modern TOWIE version with the fake tan, coiffed hair, and a penchant for materialistic things. But what if it goes back much further than that, to a time when women were persecuted for being witches? And why did Essex have so many cases of witchcraft?
