Cheshire CHATTER All out reset this January? Chester’s Ashley Rudd suggests taking it nice and slow

anuary always feels like the perfect excuse for a reset – and this year, I’ve leaned all the way in. Instead of setting resolutions I’ll probably abandon by February, I’ve focused on slowly rebuilding the parts of my routine that genuinely make me feel grounded. Beauty-wise, being from the North West means my loyalty to a full, fluffy brow runs deep. It’s practically cultural. I gave my makeup bag a refresh with new staples from REFY, and this year I’m prioritising hydration above everything else. Their Face Primer has become an absolute nonnegotiable; it gives that soft, fresh glow that suggests eight hours of sleep (even when we all know the reality is closer to scrolling TikTok until midnight). Another part of my reset has been making a conscious effort to move my body more. Not in a punish-yourself-with-thegym way, but in a way that feels kind and strengthening. Enter my latest obsession: Reformer Pilates. The burn is very real, but so are the results physically and mentally. I’ve been in classes constantly at BABE Fitness Studios in Chester, and I’ve become a full convert. You should try it out if you haven’t already done so.

I’m a huge fan of Megan’s classes there; they’re that perfect balance of challenging and uplifting. She has this way of pushing you past what you thought your limit was, but you leave feeling longer, stronger, taller, and genuinely lifted both mentally and physically. There’s something almost meditative about the reformer: the focus on breath, the controlled movement, the moment you feel muscles working that you never knew existed. Of course, with new habits comes new activewear. My current go-to set is from Shapermint. I first heard about them when I was in the US, so discovering they’ve now launched in the UK felt like perfect timing. I’m genuinely impressed by the quality. If this is the energy I’m bringing into 2026, then I think I’m off to a pretty strong start.

Emergency on Planet Earth opens at Warrington Museum and Art Gallery

arrington Museum and Art Gallery has launched the first in a series of new eyeopening exhibitions which aim to challenge perceptions of the climate crisis. From local stories to global insights, Emergency on Planet Earth explores our relationship with the natural world and how we can adapt for a more sustainable future. The Museum team also plans to host a follow-up exhibition once a year to coincide with COP (Conference of the Parties), the UN’s global summit where countries come together to address climate change. Amanda Moore, Sustainability Officer for Warrington Museum, says: “This first exhibition is about biodiversity and habitat loss. Britain is one of the most nature depleted countries in the world, and we wanted to highlight this fact. We’ve looked at wider stories and then focused on Warrington, by looking at the draft of the ‘Local Nature Recovery Strategy’ that should be published any time now for people to see what’s going on with nature near them.” The exhibition itself will also be as sustainable as possible – thanks to additional funding and support from Museum Development North. Out with a

BANG Not many ended 2025 with quite as much excitement as Warrington actress Ruby O’Donnell. She talks to Absolutely about her exit from Hollyoaks and what 2026 holds in store

here is nothing quite like a dramatic demise in soapland. Whether it’s Barry Evans tumbling down a hill or the Mitchell sisters drowning together on EastEnders, the truly horrific death of Maxine Peacock at the hands on serial killer Richard Hillman on Coronation Street, or the groundbreaking 1993 plane crash in Emmerdale, these moments live long in the memories of fans. Now, you can add Hollyoaks’ Peri Lomax to the list. Ever since Peri first appeared on 4th October 2013, her life has been one setback after another. There was the major shock when, after witnessing her father’s affair, she falls down the stairs – and is subsequently diagnosed with a brain tumour (despite surgery being successful, the incident sets off a chain of emotional turmoil). Soon after that shocking turn, Peri discovers that the person she thought was her sister – Leela Lomax – is actually her biological mother, and that her “parents” are her grandparents. Then, in 2015, Peri becomes pregnant as a teenager with Tom Cunningham’s child,

leading to the birth of her daughter, Steph Cunningham-Lomax. Quite a list. Over the years Peri endures more drama: complex relationships, the trauma of sexual assault, and struggles tied to her upbringing and family history. Finally – in a dramatic and tragic conclusion – Peri is killed off in October 2025 during a major explosion: she heroically sacrifices herself to save Tom, only to be struck by a falling ship chimney. In this day of age where nothing is kept secret, this proved to be a real shock for a much-loved character. “Everyone’s heartbroken,” says the actress who played Peri, Ruby O’Donnell, about the response of her ever-growing fanbase online. “I knew it was going to happen because even though Peri has made so many mistakes, the fans have always stuck with her. So, I knew that by killing Peri off so many fans were going to be writing about it because she’s always been kind of the embodiment of a normal person. She makes so many mistakes that normal people make, and she was just the girl next door. No-one thought that they were going to kill little Peri off. When I posted about it and included all the throwbacks, it made people realise how long they’ve been

with me. It’s nice, it’s the response that I wanted. If people were like, ‘thank God she’s dead’ I would have been gutted!” Absolutely is chatting to the Warrington born and bred actress a couple of weeks after the dramatic episode and Ruby says it’s been a whirlwind time of press interviews. Considering she has played Ruby since she was 12-years-old – she is now 25 – shows how much of a wrench it must be to leave the character behind, so was she entirely happy that there was no chance of a future return? “Yes,” she states firmly. “When I first had the conversation about wanting to leave the show, you know you are at the mercy of the writers, and when I went into the meeting, I was kind of okay with either outcome. Obviously because Peri was such a big character, I knew she wasn’t just going to be leaving in the back of a taxi. I knew when I said that I wanted to leave, it was going to be in a big way.” The timing, too, happened to coincide with Hollyoaks’ 30th anniversary (it first aired on 23rd October 1995). “I was expecting death because of the anniversary,” Ruby adds. “And, if I’m honest, it does close the door fully, which opens new opportunities in your mind. WARRINGTON IS RUBY'S FAMILY HOME

If not, you might always have the thing of, ‘oh, I could go back, it’s always there’. So, having the door fully closed, it’s like completely entering a new chapter. So I was really on board with it.” Ruby’s stint on the show has been all the more remarkable considering that it was never planned. “I’d never done any acting before,” Ruby smiles. “I never expected to be an actress. It was actually down to my little brother. He was a child actor and did lots of commercials and stuff. And I just went with him to the audition for the agency to support him basically because I loved singing, acting and dancing, but I never took it seriously. And then they actually hired us both. Hollyoaks was literally my second audition. “Obviously I was nervous, but I think because it wasn’t something that I ever saw myself doing, I just saw it as fun, made it a bit easier. I literally did four rounds of auditions and every round I was like, ‘oh my god I’m getting closer and closer’ – and then I booked the job and it was a bit of an ‘oh my god moment, I’m going to be on TV and I can’t act’! I think they just loved my vibe and because I was so carefree with it. Because I was so young, they knew that they could mould me and teach me and I really did fall

into the role if I’m honest. It literally just fell into my lap and then became my passion and my career. I had my mum with me as my chaperone, so that was a big support for me. And she was not like a pushy stage mum. She literally said to me on my first day, ‘This needs to be fun or we’re not doing it’.” Clearly it was fun, and we the audience have certainly enjoyed watching Peri’s many ups and downs. “She made so many mistakes,” Ruby laughs. “It was like one step forward, three steps back. But I’m really proud of the development of the character, especially by the end. She figured out she wanted to be with Tom [Cunningham, played by Ellis Hollins] and she was finally making all the right decisions for her life – and then she dies! The whole reason why we did it was because Peri has made so many mistakes leading up to this point in her life. That’s why we decided it was going to be all the more tragic that she dies because finally she makes the right decision, the sensible decision, and then it gets taken away from her.” Despite the response and media interest, the storyline isn’t Ruby’s favourite during her time on the show. “I’d say my first big one was the teen pregnancy,” she picks out. “I love that one because it was the first

time I was like, ‘I can act’. I did a homeless one, which was just a standalone episode for my character. I always say that’s my favourite storyline I’ve ever done because it was literally just an hour long of Peri. I watched the episode actually the other day and I was like, ‘you know what, that’s still a great episode’. It was filmed in Liverpool and that’s another reason why it’s so special because it was on location. Whenever you do a location shoot, it just amplifies it by like 20. So we were in the middle of Liverpool, it was January so it was freezing and it actually snowed on one of the days when we filmed it, where my friend in the story dies of hypothermia. It was really special because obviously it’s a very sensitive topic that we were filming. I was only 17 when I filmed that and it felt like really serious filming.” Now, though, the world is Ruby’s oyster. “The main reason I left Hollyoaks is because I want to play other roles. I felt like I was morphing into Peri. It’s been so amazing, but I’m ready to go and do other parts.” Whatever the future holds, it’s sure to be dramatic. XO are all set to take the pop world by storm in 2026. One of the quintet, Liverpool local Summer Askew, tells Absolutely about a whirlwind past year

O are a bold British girl-band who broke onto the pop scene in 2025. Formed by Polydor Records in late 2024, the group unites five vibrant voices – Summer Askew, Shali Bordoni, Zoe Miller, Emmy Statham and Reanna Sujeewon – drawing on their diverse backgrounds across Essex, London, Liverpool, Derbyshire and Hong Kong. With their debut singles Ponytail and the breakout Lovesick, XO deliver an irresistible blend of electropop, raw energy and grounded storytelling that captured early acclaim. Their sound draws from classic British girl-group DNA while adding a contemporary, cheered-on twist – unapologetically Gen Z, honest about relationships, friendship and identity. In November 2025 they released their debut EP Fashionably Late, a snapshot of youth – full of dance-pop optimism, emotional highs and “real-life” vibes. It was the perfect time to chat to the North West-based member of the band, Summer Askew, about what has been quite the year for the quintet.

Q Tell us how XO came together… A Us girls came together a little over a

year ago. We all attended an audition that we had seen advertised online that read: “Are you 17-19 years old? Do you like The Pussycat Dolls? Come along etc.” So we all attended the audition and went through

multiple rounds of singing and dancing, and by the end of the day the panel put out five chairs and told us we were in a girl band, and gave us a quick insight into what was to come. We were all so overwhelmed and confused – as we were about to leave I said to the girls please can you put your name and number in my notes so I can make a group chat so we can talk! From there, we met at our management’s office a couple of weeks later and in the following two months after that we recorded four songs and a music video that went on to help us get our record deal with Polydor in January 2025. It was definitely a whirlwind of a couple of months, but us girls did hit it off straight away. We’re honestly like sisters now. on 14th November and it was so exciting. This body of work is something we are all so proud of. It even includes a couple of songs that we have written on which is so exciting. The journey to this point has been amazing, we actually did a schools tour where we got to perform around five shows a day, five days a week for over a

month, and it was absolutely amazing for us to get in front of people and be able to have a reaction to our music and see what people love to help us put together this EP. Q You describe yourselves as the “most

chaotic girlband ever”. Why?

A We describe ourselves as “the

most chaotic girlband ever”, honestly because we are. We are five girls with big personalities. It’s always going to be chaotic, but I think the main thing is that we are wanting to bring back that carefree element of pop from the noughties, as we grew up in this era of pop. Everything was just carefree, fun and not too overthought, and I think with that, there’s always a little bit of chaos.

Q Real Friends was co-written

with Charli XCX – what was that experience like, and what did you learn from working with such an influential pop disruptor? A Real Friends first came to us girls as a demo, and when we received it we were all obsessed straight away. Before we went into the studio to record on it, we agreed that we would change some of the lyrics to make them more relatable to us. about and it is such an honour to us girls to have our names in credits next to such an incredible and influential pop icon. Q The songs on this EP cover

everything from confidence (‘Candy’) to vulnerability (‘Lovesick’). Which track feels most personal to you and why? A I would say the track that I personally love would be Candy, it’s just so much fun to sing, listen to and dance to, and I feel so confident performing it. I also love the lyrics. They’re so cheeky and in your face, it’s just a vibe all around. Q Many of your lyrics emphasise

friendship and sticking together. Why was it important that your debut showcased sisterhood just as much as romance? A I think our debut showcasing sisterhood was sort of fate. When we get in the room with writers and producers they always come to us and say they can feel an energy when around us and that you can see we all have a genuine connection, and I think that inspires a lot of concepts for songs. Q With members from Liverpool, Essex,

London, Derbyshire, and Hong Kong, you’re a truly diverse British group. How do your different backgrounds shape the XO sound and dynamic? A We are from all over, and we are all

very different, but the thing that brings us all together is our love for music. We all grew up performing and our passion for performing stemmed from our love for music, and it is so special that we share that. The XO sound we had a brief conversation about when we first met and somehow we were all aligned on what music we wanted to make. We are all inspired by the noughties and growing up we loved artists such as The Pussycat Dolls, Gwen Stefani, Fergie, and Black Eyed Peas. We are all also passionate about making music we can dance to so that is a big motivating point when it comes to making music. Q Coming from Liverpool – a city with

a rich musical legacy from The Beatles to modern pop – how has the city’s music scene or culture influenced your approach to music and performance? A The Liverpool musical legacy growing up was something I was so interested in. I remember going to town and always seeing tourists no matter what day it was and I would wonder why. Of course, The Beatles were why. Crazy story: my grandad had a cousin Johnny Gentle (John Askew) who was a pop singer and for his first ever tour he hired a band to be his backing band, called The Silver Beetles, who went on to later be named The Beatles. I find that absolutely crazy, but it is apparent that music has

always been a big part of my family. Q How has your upbringing shaped

your personality within the band?

A Us scousers are known for our warmth

and humour, I think my upbringing has shaped my personality in the band because the girls do say I’m just down to earth. I don’t let much bother me, I just take it as it comes really and enjoy every moment. Q Liverpool has a strong sense

of community. Do you think that influenced your instinct to prioritise friendship and togetherness in XO? A I absolutely love Liverpool and I am so proud to be from Liverpool. I actually always speak to the girls about this because we are based in London and I’ve told them I will live in Liverpool until I absolutely must leave, because the city is just such a community. – what first inspired you to get behind the wheel so young? A They say it’s in the blood. My Dad has raced a few different formulas and my Grandad raced V8 hotstox in the 1980s. It was always an intention to start earlier, but through the Covid years everything was put back so I didn’t hit the track until age 13 in 2022. Q How did competing in the junior

formulas like Junior Rods and National Minis prepare you for stepping up to the V8 Hotstox? A The junior rods were a great first formula, they taught me to be smooth and track aware. After this I moved into the National Ministox, which

I’m a third generation Lomax to race in this formula and if I have half the success my Grandad had that would mean the world to me.

t Boniface Church in Bunbury was transformed into a dazzling runway as the local community came together for a charity fashion show in support of DKMS, an organisation dedicated to fighting blood cancer. Hosted by Emma Barnett and Lynne Simpson of Lizella Clothing, the event was a celebration of fashion, music, and heartfelt generosity. From the moment guests arrived, the atmosphere was electric. Attendees were greeted with fizz courtesy of The Dysart Arms, whose team provided a fully stocked outdoor bar and delicious food throughout the night. The night began with an inspiring talk from Peter McCleave, a Bunbury resident whose story has touched thousands. Diagnosed with myeloma, a form of blood cancer, in 2017, Peter was given seven years to live. Doctors told him a stem cell transplant could save his life, but finding a genetic match has been extremely difficult due to his mixed Macanese, Irish, and English heritage. Despite this, Peter has turned

A night of style, community, and purpose his personal battle into a global mission, encouraging tens of thousands to join the stem cell register. His tireless campaigning has featured on ITV Granada Reports and even in his own documentary Chasing the odds – A Journey of hope. In November 2024, Peter travelled over 6,000 miles to Macau to raise awareness and continue his search for a match. His courage and determination are at the heart of why this event matters so deeply. Then, the spotlight shifted to fashion. First up was the Queens of Archive showcase, curated by the talented Nicola Orme. Her collection blended vintage glamour with modern edge, captivating the audience with bold silhouettes and timeless elegance. Guests were thrilled to learn about exclusive discounts and private styling opportunities, adding an extra layer of excitement to the evening.

Nicola’s designs have attracted a number of famous faces, with her pieces most recently featured in Lily Allen’s latest music video. Following this, Dr Caddy from Enigma took the stage to share insights into the services offered at their Tarporleybased clinic, highlighting the importance of wellness alongside beauty. The second catwalk featured Lizella Clothing, marking Emma and Lynne’s fifth charity fashion show in St Boniface Church. Under the glow of stunning lighting provided by Events Equipment Ltd, local models brought the designs to life with confidence and charm. Throughout the evening, guests enjoyed browsing stalls from local businesses, bidding on silent auction items, and purchasing raffle tickets for a chance to win fabulous prizes. Lynne and Emma were deeply grateful to all the local businesses and individuals who generously donated these incredible prizes – their kindness and support truly made the night special. Elysium Personal Fitness Studios in Frodsham is turning one in February and founder Steve Chaney explains why they have had such a big impact on the local community Q What inspired you to start Elysium

Personal Fitness Studios, and how did the idea of combining personal training with small group sessions come about? A I used to work as a personal trainer in a big commercial chain. It was often frustrating because, particularly during busy periods, I would have to adapt my programming around the availability of equipment and space. I felt that if I had my own facility, I’d be able to fulfill programs more effectively and deliver better quality personal training. Q What does the name Elysium

mean to you, and how does it reflect the studio’s philosophy? A I actually heard the word first used in a film and I loved the sound of it, so I researched the definition – a state of great happiness – and that resonated with my own fitness journey, as fitness gave me freedom and that led to happiness. Our studio reflects that, the fitness clients achieve gives them that freedom and happiness. Q How would you describe

Elysium’s approach to fitness

compared to a traditional gym or personal training model? A We pride ourselves on upholding high standards on everything. In particular, our coaches deliver sessions to the highest possible standards, tailored to all abilities. We have three pillars to our programme: Forge, Workshop, Accelerate. These three pillars are designed to cover all components of fitness, in order to optimise someone’s fitness. Because we understand everybody is different, we ensure that all different components of fitness – mobility, flexibility, stability, muscular endurance, muscular strength, muscular power and anaerobic capacity – are all covered in our programme. Forge is the main offering, our small group personal training, that has three elements: warmup, strength and WOD. Every day the warm-up specifically mobilises the right muscles that the strength section depends on. It also improves mobility, stability, flexibility, and raises the heart rate. Next is the strength section, where we focus on one or two specific lifts and really drill down technique. Then we’ll do a workout of the

day (WOD) to improve functional fitness, aerobic capacity and muscular endurance. Workshops, which currently take place on Wednesdays only, is where we really slow it down and focus on nailing technique. So we have a concept of ‘do it light, do it right’. Sometimes this involves honing technique on a specific lift, or it could be teaching skill on one of the machines. This then helps members perform better in Forge, as well as our other pillar, Accelerate.

Accelerate is inspired by hybrid training, similar to Hyrox and CrossFit, so higher intensity workouts. feel in just one year – what do you think has contributed most to that success? A I think fitness in general is an organic platform for networking and friendships to take place. It’s an environment where everyone’s championing each other. We always say that the heaviest weight in the gym is the front door, or it can be for a lot of people. Many long-standing clients have that empathy for how daunting the first session can be after not being in a gym environment for a while, or ever before. So we foster a very encouraging and supportive environment. Our programme is planned in detail and is scalable, so that two people at completely

different abilities can equally enjoy the same session, while also challenging themselves and feeling a sense of achievement. This kind of environment ensures that everyone is challenged but also feels rewarded – a foundation for great friendships to form!

We also have an ambition to take our clients on an activity day that pushes them out of their comfort zones, tests their limits and builds confidence while having fun. We may consider something outdoors-focused with adrenaline, like surfing or rock climbing. there plans to expand or evolve?

Over the years since training as an Alexander Technique teacher I had to learn to be kind to myself when I was having a bad day and my body was not working well. I approach every lesson in this way and my attitude is that you accept where you are right now and you fully embody who you are and then you see things start to change. Q Many of your clients are high achievers

under pressure. What patterns have you noticed in how stress manifests in the body, and how do you begin to unravel those patterns with someone new? A One of the first things you see is how stress impacts the way people breathe. When people are stressed you often notice the breath is shallow and much higher up in the chest. Alexander was known as the “breathing man” and I do place a great deal of my attention on helping people to breath freely and with less effort. The lungs have so much more capacity than most people realise and the lessons will often unlock the potential and leave people calmer and ready for action.

I am very interested in exploring how the Technique helps people to care for themselves. Q Can you walk us through how

your early career shaped your design sensibility and eventually led you to launch your own studio? A My early career was an extraordinary training ground; I was fortunate to work on incredible projects all over the world. Working with Foster + Partners taught me to think architecturally – to understand proportion, light, and how to create beauty when form follows function. Then, at David Collins Studio, I discovered the emotional side of design: how texture, tone and materials can completely transform an atmosphere. Those two experiences – one rooted in precision, the other in storytelling – were united by their attention to detail, and it’s this that has formed the backbone of my approach today. When I launched Helena Smith Interiors, I wanted to bring that blend of rigour and warmth into private homes. Residential work lets me design for how people live – the quiet rituals, family moments and the way a space can feel effortlessly elegant yet deeply personal. It’s that combination of architectural clarity and soul that continues to define the ethos of my studio. Q What motivated you to transition

from those global hospitality/ interior design roles into focusing on high-end residential projects? A After years working on large-scale global hospitality projects, I began to crave a more personal connection to the spaces I was designing. Hotel and restaurant projects foster creativity – choreographing experience and creating signature spaces – but they’re inherently public. I found myself increasingly drawn to the idea of creating something more enduring and intimate. In residential work, every detail has meaning. It’s not just about aesthetics, but about understanding a client’s rhythms – how they live, what feels like home to them. I love the quiet luxury of that: designing spaces that are deeply tailored and evolve with the people rather than the brand. That pursuit of uniquely personal design became the foundation for launching my own studio. Q How would you describe the moment

when you realised you wanted to create your own brand, and how did you decide on your studio’s identity and niche? A Exhilarating and a little daunting! Launching Helena Smith Interiors felt like a natural step – the moment where everything I’d learned came together. The studio was founded on a simple belief: that a home should make you feel

completely at ease, and that thoughtful design is the way to achieve it. From the beginning, I wanted a clear design language – one that values proportion, materiality and atmosphere in equal measure. Every project starts with an architectural sensibility, then builds layers of texture and tone to create a sense of depth and character. It’s a language that allows each project to feel individual, layered and intrinsically connected to the way people actually live. Q How do you cultivate a sense of

atmosphere in a home, and how has that ambition evolved over the years? A For me, atmosphere is everything – it’s what turns a well-designed space into somewhere you feel the moment you walk in. Comfort and practicality are the foundation of good design, of course, but atmosphere is what takes it to another level. It’s about curating a subtle experience for all the senses: the fragrance of a room, the ability to adjust lighting throughout the day, the contrast of textures

as your hand moves across a surface. I’ve always believed that the most successful interiors don’t shout; they quietly draw you in. Over time, my focus has become less about decoration and more about composition – how materials, colour and light can work in harmony to create a particular mood. Q Among the many residential projects

you’ve undertaken, which one stands out to you as the most memorable? Many of my clients are drawn to Cheshire for its balance of countryside and connectivity, a lifestyle that naturally informs the spaces we create: elegant yet relaxed, refined but comfortable. Q Do you find there are particular

craftsmanship and quality – from custom joinery that sits effortlessly within the architecture to natural materials and commissioned artwork that reflect their individuality. Seeing the family settle in, with the house feeling instantly “theirs” was incredibly rewarding. Q Luxury interiors can sometimes risk

feeling over-designed or impersonal. How do you balance refined luxury with creating a home that feels warm, personal and lived-in? A For me, luxury isn’t about excess – it’s about ease. A beautifully designed home should, of course, feel elegant, but also comfortable and entirely natural to live in. The key is balance: refined detailing, exceptional materials and craftsmanship, paired with warmth, texture and soul. I spend a great deal of time getting to know my clients – how they live, what they love, and the small rituals that shape their days. Designing a home is an incredibly personal experience, and that understanding shapes the design from the very start. Creating a cosy corner where a parent can read to a child, or a breakfast area perfectly placed to catch the morning light – these are the moments that make a home feel authentic, lived-in, and one of a kind.

Q What role do sustainability,

material provenance, and longevity play in your design choices? A Sustainability, provenance and longevity have always been woven into how I design – not as a trend, but as a natural part of creating quality. For me, true luxury lies in investing in materials and craftsmanship that endure – pieces that can be cherished for generations. It’s the antithesis of throwaway design. Where possible, I work with skilled artisans and makers, and I love sourcing materials that have depth and honesty – natural stone, solid timber, handwoven textiles. These choices not only age beautifully, but also bring a sense of authenticity to a space. Creating something enduring is ultimately sustainable. Q How does being based in Cheshire

influence your design practice?

A Being based in Cheshire has a huge

influence on my work. The region has such a rich architectural heritage – from Georgian townhouses to Victorian villas and country estates – and each project brings its own character and story. I love responding to that individuality, preserving what makes a property special while introducing a more contemporary layer that reflects modern living.

architectural or heritage characteristics of Cheshire homes that you enjoy responding to? A Cheshire has an incredible architectural tapestry – every home seems to have its own quirks and charm. I particularly enjoy working with period properties where there’s a sense of history to respond to. Whether it’s restoring original cornicing, uncovering hidden fireplaces, or designing bespoke joinery that complements existing panelling, those details help a home’s story come back to life. Of course, older homes come with their challenges – uneven walls, complex layouts, layers of past renovations – but I love finding solutions that celebrate their character rather than conceal it. The goal is always harmony: blending the integrity of the original structure with the flow and lightness that contemporary living demands. Q How do you see the future of

IMPRESSION The Chester Festival of Ideas impressed plenty in 2025 – including the judges of a key Cheshire award

he University-led Chester Festival of Ideas is back in the awards spotlight after being named a finalist for a regional tourism accolade. The free, four-day summer highlight has been shortlisted for a 2025/26 Visit Cheshire Tourism Award in the category of Best Event or Festival. The announcement follows the festival being unveiled as a finalist in The Times Higher Education Awards, known as the ‘Oscars’ of UK higher education, for Knowledge Exchange/Transfer Initiative of the Year. Earlier this year, the festival also received an award from the Chester Civic Trust recognising how it has brought people together to enjoy free, inclusive events on a wide range of themes. The festival was a winner in the ‘Good’ category of the Trust’s The Good, The Bad and The Ugly Awards 2025. The 2025 Festival of Ideas wowed a strong turnout of visitors with nearly 100 free events. Organised by the University of Chester with the support of partners, it offered celebratory, entertaining, creative, informative and inspiring events for all ages and interests. The festival returned after its inaugural

success in 2024, with everything from the chance to hear from well-known sportspeople and broadcasters to the opportunity to get creative at art workshops and enjoy guided walks. With thousands of event attendances, feedback included: “Well done everyone involved in a great team effort to make this festival such a special event! Truly inspirational.” Events were hosted, from 3rd-6th July, at venues across Chester, including Chester Town Hall – the festival hub – Storyhouse, the Grosvenor Museum, Chester Cathedral, Chester Market, and event spaces across the University of Chester. Partners who supported the festival for the first time this year included Chester Picturehouse cinema and Chester Visual Arts space in Grosvenor Shopping Centre, both of which hosted specialist events at their venues. Among the guests this year were ninetime Paralympian champion, Hannah Cockroft OBE, and former chief news correspondent for the BBC, Kate Adie CBE. The free festival also provided a fantastic opportunity to find out more about public engagement and research led by the University, and a Family Fun Day was hosted at the University’s Exton Park site. More was added to the mix with exciting sessions from city festival partners such as Chester Zoo and the

Grosvenor Museum, while schools hosted a range of events around the theme of ‘Our Future in Our Hands’. Discussing the latest award shortlisting, Katherine Wilson, Director of Chester Festival of Ideas and Professor of Later Medieval European History at the University of Chester, says: “We’re honoured to be a finalist in the 2025/26 Visit Cheshire Tourism Awards. The shortlisting recognises the efforts of colleagues and partners from across the Cheshire community and beyond who join together to create this opportunity to share learning and ideas – from our planning team, steering group and guest speakers to those running venues, all the event leaders and volunteers – and all our visitors. We look forward to the awards as we plan for the 2026 Festival of Ideas.” The Visit Cheshire Tourism Awards, organised by Marketing Cheshire, celebrate excellence across the region’s £3.9bn visitor economy, with finalists competing in 18 categories. This year saw a record number of entries, and some category winners will automatically qualify for the VisitEngland Awards for Excellence, where they will represent Cheshire and Warrington on the national stage. How Cheshire schools united to improve the outlook for our world

wo years after initiating the very first Cheshire Schools’ Sustainability Conference, Abbey Gate College played host for the third time for this annual event. The conference was opened by the Lord Mayor of Chester, Sherin Akhtar, and brought

together more than 140 students aged eight to 18 and 15 teachers from eight schools from the Chester area to share ideas and practical ways to enhance sustainability. The schools were Bishop Heber High School, Christleton High School, Guilden Sutton C of E Primary School, Huntington Community Primary School, Saighton Primary School, Tarporley High School, and The Firs School Chester. The conference was led by Emma Flatman, Head of Sustainability at Abbey Gate College, who welcomed an incredible line-up of guest speakers. Covering a wide range of topics, from sustainable fashion and food choices to designing gardens to attract wildlife, each speaker really brought their topic alive for the student audience. The guest speakers were Monika Swindells from ōH Foundation, Victoria Nuttall from Restaurant Next Door, Mark Youde from Landscape Academy and Callum Corrie from Garden Designs for Wildlife. Commenting on the Conference, Head of Abbey Gate College, Craig Jenkinson, said: “This was another truly remarkable collaborative occasion, bringing together so many members of the wider Cheshire schools’ community, united in engaging

with such an important subject. Sustainability is one of the three pillars of purpose here at Abbey Gate College and it is really wonderful to see so many young people from this area embracing the challenge of protecting our planet. “I’d like to say a huge thank you to everyone who took part in this rewarding and informative day. Special thanks should go to Kayleigh Anger, our Co-ordinator of Community Partnerships here at Abbey Gate College, and her team, who were responsible for such a well-organised and enjoyable event. early morning swims in the pool, go for a run around the 1,000-acre estate, play tennis in the indoor tennis dome or enjoy a session in the gym before starting school, taking full advantage of the facilities set within the extensive grounds. “Pupils don’t want to spend time travelling, they want to grasp every opportunity there is here,” adds Reuban. Working closely with Reuban is Senior Houseparent Marta Gallego, who oversees more than 300 boarders at the College. She explains that boarding fosters a sense of togetherness, where friendships with peers from around the world last a lifetime.

“There is a real sense of community, and everyone contributes to it, supported by the fact that all our boarding houses are under one roof,” she says. “The many different nationalities all live and work together, giving pupils a global perspective that enriches their education.” Alongside an unrivalled academic curriculum sits a vast array of mainstream and niche clubs, sports and cultural activities. Higher Line (Sixth Form) pupils have recently launched their own Gastro Club, visiting the many and varied eateries the Ribble Valley has to offer. Other clubs include the Heavy Metal Appreciation Society, MedSoc (Medical Society) for potential medics, Astronomy Society and a build-a-go-kart project. They are truly alive when they’ve found their sense of belonging.” While many local schools end their day by mid-afternoon, Stonyhurst has structured supervised studies (homework) with access to teacher support later in the day. With evenings free from travel, boarders can participate in clubs, sport, music and interline activities. “Pupils don’t want to miss out. The structure of the Stonyhurst day avoids the often-typical family situation whereby children come home from school midafternoon and they’re on their screens for much of the evening,” says Reuban. Weekends for Stonyhurst boarders

are designed to be adventurous and fulfilling with sporting activities and trips that often have an educational or cultural element. The boarding experience helps pupils develop confidence and responsibility with routines that promote not only academic growth but essential skills that will serve them in later life. “Parents trust us to educate their children, guide them spiritually and culturally. They are in a safe environment, learning independence and surrounded by pastoral care that prepares them for adulthood,” says Reuban. he King’s School, Macclesfield, has announced the opening of a brandnew sports pavilion in 2026, at its 80-acre Prestbury campus. Thanks to a substantial legacy left by former pupil Roy Forster, the building will be named the Forster Pavilion and opened in September 2026. Continuing to invest in facilities and resources for pupils is a key component of the school’s strategic development plan, to maintain its position as one of the top performing schools in both sport and academic league tables. The Forster Pavilion will be a £5m investment in the already impressive King’s campus. It will provide a two-storey sports hub with a wrap-around spectators’ balcony, located at the centre of the school’s allweather hockey, netball and junior football pitches. Downstairs, four changing spaces with shower facilities will accommodate up to 200 people, with five further individual changing rooms for match officials and staff. The 250m2 open-plan hospitality suite on the first floor will include full audio-visual capability, two meeting rooms and comprehensive catering facilities. The building is fully accessible throughout, and will have a full array of solar panels on the roof, reinforcing the

The Association of British Orchestras is highlighting the lifelong value of music education, whatever young people’s future pathway

he Association of British Orchestras (ABO) is highlighting the value of studying music at school – and its positive impact in diverse careers. The aim is to raise awareness of the social and economic impact this has on the UK and its industries. Linking to its ‘An Orchestra in Every School’ initiative, the ABO is targeting young people choosing GCSE and A-level subjects for the 2026 academic year and beyond. The aim is to emphasise how live music making delivers a diverse skillset and benefits wellbeing and work-life balance. A recent survey of adults who make music in their leisure time found that transferable skills, including practice and perseverance (89%), focus and concentration (87%), and teamwork and collaboration (85%) proved vital in

respondents’ career paths. The survey, conducted by Making Music in collaboration with the ABO, also revealed that for almost 80% of respondents, music education developed performance and presentation skills transferable to their working life. Almost half of respondents have used these skills in non-music or nonSTEM professions and over a quarter cite a direct skills benefit in their STEM career. Respondents find music helps with areas such as social skills, physical awareness and proprioception. The most common professions which respondents work in are financial services, medicine, emergency services and religion. More than a fifth work in education. Almost 80% of respondents play in an ensemble, orchestra or band and listen to music at home in their leisure time. Respondents noted how live music helps them balance home and working life. “Live music making in all its forms develops a range

of skills that can be utilised in any career path,” says Sophie Lewis, Chair of the ABO. “There are numerous benefits to having access to live music-making experiences from a young age, whether that is academic achievements, developing confidence, creativity or improvements to mental and physical wellbeing.” Laura Baxter, Creative Learning Director of Scottish Chamber Orchestra (SCO), says: “Access to high-quality music education, and all the knowledge, joy and connection that brings, opens doors that help children and young people move from school into the world around them and to do so confidently, creatively and in community with others”. While there has been some growth in the number of GCSE Music entries over the past two years, a lack of school resources across many parts of the state sector means some young people rely on alternate approaches to develop their music-making skills – including online tutorials and self-study. The ABO and its members pledged to deliver over 1,000 live music-making opportunities this year, with the aim of giving over a million young people the opportunity to experience live music. These activities take the form of workshops, training sessions and live performances. Chester MARKET The iconic destination is celebrating three years of success

he new Market within Chester Northgate has now welcomed over seven million customers since opening in early November 2022. Coupled with a host of awards, the new market has helped transform the city centre and become one of the most visited markets in the country. Over the past three years the market’s 30 traders have racked up some impressive statistics, including The Sandbar Seafood Shack has shucked 19,000 fresh oysters; Digby & Champ have sold over 100,000 packs of dog treats; Cheezy Bandits have grated 10 tonnes of mature cheddar cheese; Chester Phone Repair have fixed over 2,000 smartphones; Lockwood & Co. bar have poured nearly 400,000 pints of draught beer and lager; Pop Specs have dispensed over 10,000 pairs of glasses; and The Crystal Hut have claimed the title of the biggest single purchase of a £1,500 amethyst geode. The market has helped nurture many small businesses, including Nicky Groves and Andy Selwood of Cheezy Bandits and Sandwich’d, who were one of the first traders selected to open at the market. Nicky says: “We went from working in hospitality, meeting, getting married and applying during the Covid lockdown with an idea for our own food stall. We started our own business with Cheezy Bandits and then a year ago opened our second stall with Sandwich’d. The market’s success has enabled us to grow

and expand our business and take on more staff. We are so grateful for the support and opportunity, and we like to think we repaid the faith the Council showed in us.” The market has recently welcomed a new trader, Sam Joseph Chocolates, founded by husband-and-wife team of Sam and Claire Pugh selling a wide range of handcrafted chocolates. Both with a background as pastry chefs in hotels and restaurants, they shared a passion for chocolate and started their business in 2014. Initially selling via street markets and then at Altrincham Market, they now have a production kitchen in Chester and live locally. Sam says: “We are delighted to open our stall at Chester Market and join the wonderful community of traders. Using the finest ingredients, our handmade chocolates are a truly indulgent experience, perfect for spoiling yourself or gifting a taste of luxury to someone special.” Councillor Nathan Pardoe, Cheshire West and Chester Council, Cabinet Member for Inclusive Economy, Regeneration and Digital Transformation, adds: “I am incredibly proud of the Council’s achievements in planning and delivering the new Chester Market, it has become an unbelievable success story and exceeded our expectations; huge congratulations to all the traders, staff and customers for helping us create such a magnificent reinvention of a city centre market.” For more details visit chester.market
