CYCLING IN NOVO MESTO

A city that lives and breathes bikes

Novo Mesto, the heart of the picturesque Dolenjska region, is a real oasis for cyclists of every kind. Surrounded by a softly rolling landscape and numerous vineyard- and forest-covered hills, it offers an ideal combination of natural beauty and diverse terrain, making Novo Mesto a destination that inspires recreational and elite cyclists alike.

Whether you are into bikepacking, day rides or easy-going bike outings, the Dolenjska region offers thousands of kilometres of marked routes, all set in a mild Mediterranean climate that allows cycling year round. Bike routes along the Krka River, through the forests of the Gorjanci, over undulating hills with gentle climbs and between vineyards and cottages offer breathtaking views of the Krka, medieval castles, picturesque villages and pristine natural beauty. The Dolenjska region is also full of cyclist-friendly accommodation – from hotels to vineyard cottages and farmhouses, where local gastronomic specialities await.

It is no coincidence that Novo Mesto is the home of stars of world cycling. Professional cycling in Novo Mesto began in 1972 with the founding of the Cycling Team Novo mesto, one of the most successful in Europe. The team has nurtured generations of talented riders and contributed to Slovenia’s current dominance at races such as the Tour de France, the Giro d’Italia

and the Vuelta a España. In 1996 Novo Mesto hosted the World Juniors Track Cycling Championships, an event that prompted the construction of an elite velodrome (the only one within the triangle formed by Belgrade, Vienna and Milan), subsequently renovated in 2018. Today the countryside around Novo Mesto, with its varied terrain –from steep slopes for strength training to flat sections for speed – is ideal for preparations for major races, while a local community passionate about cycling creates an inspiring environment for cyclists of all kinds.

Novo Mesto is one of the strongest cycling centres in Europe. Over the course of more than five decades, this town of just over 38,000 inhabitants has developed a remarkable cycling culture and given Slovenia professional cyclists whose victories at national and international races have placed Novo Mesto firmly on the world cycling map. The most successful of them began their careers at Novo Mesto’s own Cycling Team Novo mesto – including Primož Roglič, who has gone on to score victories in the Vuelta a España, the Giro d’Italia and individual stages of the Tour de France. The remarkable successes of cyclists from Novo Mesto are proof that even a small town can give rise to big dreams that then come true through hard work, passion and a strong sense of community.

PROFESSIONAL CYCLING

Cycling Team Novo mesto

From Vision to Victories

Cycling Team Novo mesto is the leading professional cycling team in south-eastern Slovenia and one of the country’s most prominent sporting organisations. It has a long tradition of organising major cycling events, which each year bring riders, supporters and cycling enthusiasts to the region. Through these events, the team makes an important contribution to the development of the sport, local tourism and the wider recognition of Novo Mesto and the Dolenjska region.

The team’s origins date back to 18 May 1972 and the founding general meeting of what would become the Novo Mesto Cycling Club. Its members were united by the shared ambition to create a cycling club that would connect enthusiasts, foster a sporting mentality and promote both recreational and competitive cycling. This meeting led to the creation of the Novo Mesto Cycling Club, today known as Cycling Team Novo mesto. Although the passing years have seen a change of name, an expansion of activities and growing ambitions, the founding principles have remained the same: openness to everyone inspired by the freedom of two wheels, the promotion of cycling culture and the creation of opportunities for future generations of cyclists. The foundations laid more than fifty years ago were so solid that the team has grown into one of the most successful and bestknown cycling teams in Slovenia, capable of developing top-level athletes, many of whom have gone on to achieve success both on the road and in life outside cycling.

Novo Mesto Velodrome

The Only Facility of its Kind in a 500 km Radius

Located near Češča Vas, just outside Novo Mesto, and surrounded by countryside, the Novo Mesto Olympic Centre is a modern sports complex offering excellent conditions throughout the year for both professional athletes and recreational users of all ages. Alongside the swimming pool complex, the focal point of the centre is the Novo Mesto Velodrome, one of the very few covered and heated velodromes in Europe and, since 2016, the official home of the Cycling Team Novo mesto. The velodrome was built in 1996 for the Junior Track Cycling World Championships and comprehensively upgraded in 2018. The refurbishment included the installation of an inflatable roof membrane and the addition of athletics facilities, turning the venue into a unique multi-purpose complex designed for year-round use. Being fully covered, the velodrome allows cyclists to train in all seasons. The track is also very important for young rider development, for learning how to ride in a group, for fixed-gear riding without brakes and for gaining experience in spatial orientation. It also provides an ideal setting for acquiring the tactical and technical skills that are essential in road racing. Due to its additional athletics facilities the velodrome is also home of the Novo Mesto Triathlon Club. As such it serves as a national centre for training and competitions and is increasingly gaining recognition within the international cycling and athletics community.

RECREATIONAL CYCLING

Cycling at your own pace

Cycling in Novo Mesto and its surroundings offers a highly varied experience, bringing together vineyard-covered hills, extensive forests, historic sites and authentic Dolenjska cuisine within a relatively compact area. The landscape is gently rolling and the routes are mostly quiet and scenic, making the area particularly attractive for gravel and road cycling, as well as for mountain bikers who enjoy exploring less travelled terrain.

The area is also well suited to families and to anyone who prefers shorter, easier routes with gentle climbs and descents. The valley of the Krka, with its gently sloping banks, provides ideal conditions for relaxed cycling while offering numerous opportunities to discover the natural and cultural sights of Dolenjska along the way. Heading south-west, the Portoval urban woodland offers a delightful starting point for a peaceful ride along a gravel path shaded by trees. The route continues along cart tracks, side paths and paved roads that follow the Krka upstream past fields and small woods to Dolenjske Toplice and on towards Bela Krajina, or into Suha Krajina to Žužemberk. Heading north-east, cycling routes lead to the world-famous Otočec Castle, where the castle park offers a pleasant stop on the route over gentle hills towards Šmarješke Toplice or through woods and fields towards Šentjernej and Kostanjevica na Krki.

Exploring Dolenjska by bike

Novo Mesto lies at the crossroads of several international and regional routes, making it not only a strategically placed hub for quick and easy exploration of the surrounding area by bike, but also an ideal starting point for longer cross-regional cycling tours. Those who enjoy longer rides can set off from Novo Mesto to explore nearby towns in Dolenjska, head out on longer tours towards the Bela Krajina, Suha Krajina, Central Slovenia and Posavje regions, or take a circular route connecting several destinations in south-eastern Slovenia.

One of the most distinctive cycling landscapes in Dolenjska unfolds on the slopes of Trška Gora, where gravel and paved roads wind their way through vineyards and past vineyard cottages, offering sweeping views over the Krka Valley and Novo Mesto. Riding here is moderately demanding but extremely scenic.

The route towards Straški Hrib offers more woodland, shade and tranquillity, as the terrain gradually shifts from open winegrowing country into quieter forested surroundings – ideal for longer gravel circuits with a break at the charming countryside inn on Frata, known for its local culinary specialities.

The route towards Dolenjske Toplice also offers rewarding experiences, with cycling routes descending into valleys and climbing back up through forests. A stop at Soteska offers the chance to discover the infamous Devil’s Tower and the ruins of the once mighty Soteska Castle, while the thermal waters of Dolenjske Toplice make this a perfect spot to rest. From here, the trail leads into the vast forest of Kočevski Rog, where cycling becomes more of an exploration and an adventure. Long gravel sections lead through deep forests, past hidden Second World War sites, with no traffic and a true sense of remoteness.

The Gorjanci range rises on the eastern edge of the region, where challenging climbs are rewarded with far-reaching views. The ascent towards Trdinov Vrh, the highest peak of the Gorjanci, follows a mix of paved and gravel roads suitable for road and gravel cyclists alike, with terrain that is varied and engaging. The Gorjanci are also famous for the Gospodična and Miklavž mountain huts – popular places to end a ride with a bowl of local mushroom soup or a plate of game goulash.
