Things to Do in Nungwi, Zanzibar

As one of the largest beaches on the island, Nungwi has a little bit of everything for everyone. While most people come here for the incredible beach and the great snorkeling, there are also a lot of fun activities you can do in Nungwi, Zanzibar. You can take an underwater walking tour (which is what we did), sky dive over the ocean, or even go to Stone Town for a day trip Nungwi has a great atmosphere for both backpackers and resort travelers and they often mesh in the bars and restaurants here.

Nungwi’s most iconic attraction is probably the pristine white beach. It is a stunning place to sit back and relax with a drink or watch the sun set. It isn’t as good for swimming as the other beaches in Zanzibar but it is a nice spot to spend some time.

Another popular activity is a dhow sailboat cruise You can take this from just about anywhere along the coast and it is a fantastic way to get out on the water and see the beautiful coastline of Nungwi. We took a 3 hour tour and it was the perfect amount of time to enjoy the scenery without feeling overwhelmed. We saw dolphins, sea lions, and plenty of other tropical fish while enjoying the calm waters of Nungwi

A great thing about the Nungwi coast is that it is a much quieter area than many of the other beaches in Zanzibar This makes it a great option for families or anyone looking for a bit more privacy on their vacation.

The Mnarani Turtle Conservation is a short walk from the main part of Nungwi and allows you to interact with Green and Hawksbill sea turtles in a tidal lagoon It is a great way to learn about these amazing creatures and see them up close.

Nungwi has a number of high end hotels with beautiful pools and rooms but they tend to be a bit more crowded than the boutique ones further north on the east side of the island. Our hotel was the Royal Zanzibar and while they

had a lovely pool and rooms, it didn’t feel as private as some of the other hotels we visited on this trip We did however like their restaurant and bar which was a fun place to hang out and relax.

If you are looking for a truly unique and unforgettable experience on your trip to Nungwi, then I highly recommend taking the Zanzibar Seawalk! This guided underwater adventure allows you to walk along the seafloor and encounter vibrant marine life – all with no diving skills required.

You will wear a helmet that connects to an oxygen tank above you, eliminating the need for a dive tank and making this a very accessible marine adventure. It’s an incredible way to explore the wonders of the ocean and it was something that I will never forget! Make sure to book this experience in advance as it does fill up fast.
