These projects are a sample of my undergraduate work at Iowa State University. The chosen projects offer a wide range of learned skills and acquired interests. The New York City housing project is a new construction design with a wide range of modeling and exploration technically as well as experientially. A re-use project in historic pier 70, San Francisco, was a comprehensive design combining new construction with the task of updating historic codes. A full-scale installation at Reiman Gardens blended real construction, deadlines, client meetings, and fabrication. My independent study was done in Prague where history and personal observations lead to the design of a cabinet. This collection was chosen to show a variety of scales, craft and depth within a wide range of project types.

DESIGN This high-rise housing project focuses on the interplay between audience and performer within the community and it’s inhabitants.

RE-USE While “U” Wait is an adaptive re-use project that roots itself in the idea of spontaneity, and finds itself in search of a new, experiential architecture. By mixing restoration, preservation, and construction, a new typology is born.

CONSTRUCT Reiman Gardens conservatory constantly surrounds occupants with an international exhibit of nature; made possible by a hidden network of machines, pumps, and infrastructure.

INVESTIGATE The Czech “chata” is typically a simple, small construction in the countryside, which was built by its owners, often using recycled or found materials that are then collaged together.

“Some Assembly Required” transformed the conservatory into a gamelike exhibit, exposing this “machine-ing” and integrating it back into the design of the plantings. Immersing viewers into a perpetual play between nature and machine, two perpetual motion systems are created; a water system and a kinetic system. Full-scale construction and client meetings made design concepts reality resulting in the 6-month exhibition.

A series of pegged acrylic panels drop the ball in a random fashion while water intermittenly rains through the center of the tower, mixing the two systems.

Lowest point in the tower filters the ball and water in seperate directions, with a handmade clear umbrella and gutter system made from 7 gauge steel and sewn clear plastic. Ball is activated by a spiral ball lift opposite the drain.

After World War II, chatas became quite popular as a place people could escape to; a place where their creators’ otherwise restrained personality and creativity could be expressed limitlessly.

62

This independent study documents the chata and how the do-ityourself qualities, personal expression and collage of materials have been translated into the city of Prague. Finally the project translates those observations to design and create a structure that is influenced and built through the spirit of the chata.
