MESSAGE FROM THE ARTISTIC DIRECTOR Dear Friends, It is with great pleasure that I welcome you to ARTATTACK! This year, we have an incredible catalogue of art, design and entertainment to offer you and this is thanks to countless people who believe in what we do. I am floored by the generosity of the curators, artists and businesses who have donated to us and by the dedication of our amazing team of staff, board members and volunteers who have put together this eveningâ€™s event. I would also like to thank BMO Financial Group for joining us this year as our presenting sponsor. Their on-going support and commitment to our work has been an indispensible part of our success. Especially, I would like to thank all of you for being here tonight. Your presence ensures that queer voices will continue to have a stage to speak from and that queer audiences will have a stage to see their lives reflected on. Furthermore, you are safeguarding a space for hundreds of queer youths to find strength and empowerment through artistic expression. MESSAGE FROM THE CURATORS JON DAVIES “I’m really excited to have been invited to curate work for the auction this year, to support Buddies and the innovative, experimental work that they do in performance and theatre in Toronto. I selected pieces by three Toronto-based artists working in a range of media like drawing, photography, printmaking, and illustration. The works are all quite different and are queer in very different ways as well, and I hope that you enjoy them. Thanks very much to the artists for their work.” Jon Davies is a widely published writer and the Assistant Curator at The Power Plant Contemporary Art Gallery. At The Power Plant, he has curated the exhibitions Ryan Trecartin: Any Ever (with Helena Reckitt), The Otolith Group: Otolith III, To What Earth Does This Sweet Cold Belong?, and Coming After, which opens in December 2011.

MICHAEL CHAMBERS “For Buddies in Bad Times Theatre’s ARTATTACK! 2011, I have chosen to present works of art that inform imagery based on the reflective nature of light, the subtleties and contrasts that define.” Photographic Artist and Curator Michael Chambers has been published and exhibited internationally. As a speaker, Chambers has inspired and motivated aspiring artists and youths at numerous venues such as the Royal Ontario Museum, Art Gallery of Ontario and the National Film Board Of Canada to name a few. With numerous award winning films and television credits, he was also the subject of Anton Wagner’s biographical documentary for CBC, The Photographer - An Artist’s Journey and more recently a PBS special Through A Lense Darkly, A Thomas Allen Harris film soon to be released. A graduate of Toronto’s York University, Chambers has received several awards for his outstanding work. Most recently he was the recipient of the 2010 Harry Jerome Award for his contributions in art and entertainment.

KEITH COLE Game Changers “My dear friend, Michael Caines, the extraordinary visual artist, ‘discovered’ the joy of Luke Painter approximately 12 years ago – many of the gays are just now discovering the ‘wonders’ of Luke Painter – c’mon boys – keep up! Anitra Hamilton has become a new friend – open and honest, hilariously funny, a woman with a sock fetish and a talented artist – thank you Anitra for your insights, talent and humour. I would most likely be in a psycho ward right now but my two darling Saviours, Benjamin Edelberg and Julian Higuerey Núñez, have rescued me. I owe you both so much – thanks for the art, fun, great conversations, hairy legs and furry bums – I love you both – you two are my salvation. My curatorial inspiration: “Game Changers”. I am one and I am drawn to people who are changing the game and how it is played – Luke and Anitra have already changed the game and continue to do so. Benjamin and Julian are on the threshold – so watch out. Buddies has been my buddy for many, many, many years. I grew up here and will forever be in love with the house that Sky built along with all the other fabulous people who helped create this glorious place. SRIMOYEE MITRA Srimoyee Mitra was appointed Curator of Contemporary Art at the Art Gallery of Windsor in June 2011. Prior to that she was Program Coordinator at the South Asian Visual Arts Centre (SAVAC) in Toronto, and is a graduate of the MA program in Art History at York University. Her recent curatorial initiatives include Changing Stakes: Contemporary Art Dialogues with Dubai which opens at Mercer Union in the fall and Crossing Lines: An Intercultural Dialogue at the Glenhyrst Art Gallery (2009).

SOPHIE HACKETT “I like the simplicity of both of these works: a simple idea, simply executed. And yet the results in each case deliver something new about how we frame things.” Sophie Hackett is the assistant curator, photography at the Art Gallery of Ontario and adjunct faculty in Ryerson University’s Masters program in photographic preservation and collections management. Recent projects include Suzy Lake, Rhythm of a True Space (2008); Connecting with Photography (2008), the reinstallation of the photography permanent collection gallery in 2008, co-curated with Maia-Mari Sutnik; Barbara Kruger, Untitled (It), 2010 – the first time the AGO’s front façade has been used as a site for art;“Where I was born...”: A Photograph, a Clue and the Discovery of Abel Boulineau; and Songs of the Future: Canadian Industrial Photographs, 1858 to Today, which is currently on view.

HEATHER KEUNG Heather Keung graduated from the OCAD University. Her artistic practice includes video, installation and performance art and is inspired by physical labour, memory, technology and architecture. Works from this series have recently been showcased in curated programs in Toronto, Montreal, Vancouver, San Francisco and Buenos Aries. In addition to her artistic practice, she has been an active contributor to the arts community and Artist-Run-Centres in Toronto through her work as the Artistic Director at the Toronto Reel Asian International Film Festival, Technical Manager of dubbing and video restoration at Vtape, and as a board member of Trinity Square Video. As a programmer and curator, she has a strong focus on Asian Diaspora in Canada, Feminism and experimental Media Art.

DAVID LISS “Fortunately, with the abundance of artistic talent in Toronto and their seemingly endless capacity for generosity, finding five artists willing to donate to the auction is easy. Unfortunately, it’s very difficult to choose some over others. When I’m curating exhibitions I often like to present an inter-generational and inter-disciplinary mix. As an established artist with deep ties to the worlds of art, design, literature and theatre in Toronto, Eldon Garnet is widely recognized as a significant contributor to the culture of our city. His many public sculptures around town have become iconic landmarks. Sarah Clifford-Rashotte, Alex McLeod and David Trautrimas are younger artists who have already begun to establish strong reputations - they’re hot on the scene right now - and the price-points of their work make them accessible to those who may be looking to start or add to emerging collections. Although I work in the field of contemporary art, I’m also interested in disrupting the often too narrow confines of its discourse and Pascal Paquette produces work that challenges boundaries between abstract painting, urban graffiti styles, graphic design and animation.” David Liss is Artistic Director and Curator of the Museum of Contemporary Canadian Art, (MOCCA), in Toronto, Canada, since December 2000. From April 1995 until November 2000 he was Director/Curator of the Gallery of the Saidye Bronfman Centre for the Arts in Montreal. Between 1994 and 1996 he regularly contributed art reviews to the Montreal Gazette. Since the mid-1980s he has organized, produced and curated numerous solo and group exhibitions of contemporary art, in addition to overseeing related publications, educational programs, performances, events and travelling exhibitions in Canada and internationally. Some recent activities include participation in the curatorial programs of the ARCO art fair in Madrid, Spain, 2004 – 2008, and the PhotoMiami art fair at Basel/Miami in 2006 and 2007, and serving on the advisory committee for the Toronto Sculpture Garden since 2003. Most recently he was co-curator of the 2011 Biennale Montreal.

MADE “We are constantly seeking the intersection where design and craftsmanship working together can articulate a place, a sensibility or a character. These same qualities are voiced through Buddies in Bad Times Theatre’s own explorations of culture, community and politics. We are glad of the opportunity to introduce some Canadian designers who produce thoughtful objects.” MADE is both studio and showroom operated by Julie Nicholson and Shaun Moore. The partnership engages in the design of objects and interiors, installations, commissions, collaborations with artists and designers and numerous curatorial projects. Their Toronto based showroom is committed to the representation of compelling functional works made in Canada by independent Canadian designers. Fueled by creative collaboration of all kinds, their curatorial and design practice reflects original ideas and thoughtful approach. Through a consistent combination of quality with concept, they aim to engage discussion and dissemination surrounding function, aesthetics and Canadian identity within their designs and presentations. Shaun Moore is a graduate of the Sheridan Institute of Craft and Design Furniture program and Julie Nicholson is a graduate of the Queensland College of Art, Australia

Logan MacDonald Revolutionary Drag 2010; ink on paper; 11”x13” Estimate: $250

Logan MacDonald is an emerging Canadian artist from the east coast, having grown up in Nova Scotia and Newfoundland. He received a BFA from Concordia University, and more recently finished a Master’s in Visual Arts at York University. He has exhibited artwork throughout Canada, the United States, and Europe. He was a member of the queer artist collective The Third Leg, which produced the Welcome to Gayside exhibition/map at Eastern Edge Gallery in 2006. With his practice, MacDonald ambitiously attempts to create artworks that consider such compelling notions as what’s wrong with the world today? and what’s the function of contemporary art? www.loganmacdonald.com

Robert Laliberté Enlacé

Robert Laliberté is a Canadian photographer, best known for his male nudes. Originally from Quebec City, he has lived and worked in Montreal (Quebec) since 1975. His photographs of male nudes, evoking the works of Herb Ritts and Robert Mapplethorpe, made him known in Canada and abroad. He is considered the “photographer flagship” of the gay community of Montreal and a major player in the emergence of gay culture in Montreal. He was the official photographer of the magazine Fugues for twelve years (1984-1996). Robert Laliberté also worked as a photographer in the theatre and explored other themes, such as street scenes or portraits of the elderly. Laliberté has presented his work in over 20 exhibitions and several publications in Canada and abroad. He was awarded the prix Arc-en-ciel pour la culture in 2002. That same year, the Ecomuseum du fier monde (Montreal) devoted a retrospective of his career. www.robertlaliberte.com

Connie Chisholm Studio Tamatik Lounger

2011; walnut veneer, wool; 23”x26.5”x30” Estimate: $1,200 Connie Chisholm works primarily in wood. She strives for longevity in her designs which are constructed to be physically and aesthetically enduring and functionally well resolved. Influenced by modernism, her work is stripped of ornament, simple in form, and sculptural. She explores the qualities of balance, contrast, symmetry and movement to create work that is clear, direct and evocative.

Elle Flanders & Tamira Sawatzky Isdud

Elle Flanders is a filmmaker and artist based in Toronto. She was raised in Montreal and Jerusalem and holds both an MA in Critical Theory and an MFA from Rutgers University. Her work has been screened and exhibited at the Berlin International Film Festival, the MOMA, TIFF, and festivals worldwide. Her most recent work includes: Public Studio’s Road Movie, a six screen installation on the segregated roads of Palestine that premiered at this year’s TIFF. Tamira Sawatzky is an architect and artist working in Toronto. In addition to an ongoing architectural practice, her most recent art work includes: Kino Pravda 3G, a series of video installations addressing current public dissent and protests across the globe. Julian Higuerey Núñez was born in London, England in 1983 but was raised in Caracas, Venezuela. He studied physics and fine arts before moving to Toronto to pursue an MFA at OCAD University. Gustavo Cerquera Benjumea is a Colombian multidisciplinary artist. He works in animation, painting, drawing and sculpture. He migrated to Canada in 2002. He has a BA in Visual Arts from Brock University and graduated from the Computer Animation program at Sheridan College. He currently lives and works in Toronto, Ontario. Luke Painter is an artist, curator and educator living and working in Toronto. Upcoming exhibitions include a solo show at LE Gallery in Spring 2012 and a two-person exhibition with Amanda Nedham at Bonneau-Samames Art Contemporain in Marseille, France in Fall 2012. Luke is the co-curator (with Meera Singh) of a traveling karaoke themed performance and video night titled K-Town. Luke has received numerous research and artist grants from hexagram/Concordia, Canada Council for the Arts, the Ontario Arts Council and the Toronto Arts Council. His work has been reviewed by many notable publications including: Canadian Art, The Globe and Mail, The National Post, Now Magazine, Mix Magazine and was included in Carte Blanch Vol 2- Painting, a national survey of Canadian painters. Ashlee is a Toronto- based artist, designer and technician. She has a Bachelor of Fine Arts Degree from York University and can currently be found as the Technical Director of the Al Green Theatre. She has been working in the medium of counted cross-stitch for many years and enjoys creating images that follow the traditional aesthetic of the craft but also depict non-traditional imagery and ideas.

Jade Rude Gold Frames

2010; chromed brass aluminum; 20”x20” Estimate: $645 Jade Rude creates works that actualize moments of transition or disruption, focusing on the effects of trompe l’oeil, optical illusions and reversals. She is interested in exploring surface aesthetics and the ways in which outward appearances act as signifiers for objects. Rude is a Toronto-based artist who has studied social theory in Norway, art and design in England and is a graduate of Alberta College of Art. Sarah Clifford-Rashotte is an emerging Canadian artist and a graduate of the MFA program at Central Saint Martins College of Art and Design (London, UK). Her multidisciplinary practice addresses female identity, reconstructed memories and the poetic. She has evolved a distinct visual vocabulary representative of an archetypal struggle for self-preservation and self-obliteration. Sandra Brewster is a Toronto-based visual artist and arts educator. Her drawings, paintings, mixed-media work and installations explore the issues of identity and representation relating to people of African descent. Her work challenges mainstream assumptions and perceptions. A BFA graduate of York University, Brewster has since exhibited her work extensively in Toronto and internationally. Sharlene Bamboat is a mixed media artist born in Karachi Pakistan. As of late, Bamboat’s work has been gaining international notoriety, screening in North America, Europe, South Asia and the United Kingdom. Pascal Paquette is a visual artist based in Toronto, Canada. His work focuses on the transformation of culture that occurs when two or more economic, social or cultural realities collide. He works mostly in painting, but also in photography and site-specific installation. He is a graduate of the Graphic Arts program at La Cité Collégiale in Ottawa, Canada. Bun is from the ongoing series, What I’ve Learned in the Last Five Years. Based mostly on abstract art, this new series gathers the stylistic elements that are familiar and central to his art practice since the very beginning. McLeod’s CGI prints act as hybrid spaces that imply an almost infinite recombination of the past and present, the real and virtual. Beneath their seductively polished surfaces, of glimmering fortresses and floating geometric abstractions, lies a haunting stillness that comes forth in the aftermath of cataclysmic events. And yet, from the twilight of devastation shown in these strange dioramas lie possibilities for hope and rebirth in our own digital milieu through the artist’s new approaches to concepts as varied as ecological responsibility and the shared intersections between photography and painting. Eldon Garnet is a photo based artist, public sculptor and writer based in Toronto. He is the artist of the major public sculpture, The Memorial to Commemorate the Chinese Railroad Workers in Canada. Paul Wong’s video career spans some 30 years. His work has been shown in exhibitions and festivals around the world, including London, Paris and Hong Kong and the Museum of Modern Art in New York. In 1996, the National Gallery of Canada mounted the solo exhibition, On Becoming a Man. In 2003, Hungry Ghosts was presented in the Extra 50 Section of the Venice Biennale. In addition to video production, Paul Wong was instrumental in the founding of two artist-run centres in Vancouver: Satellite Video Exchange (Video-In) in 1973 and On Edge in 1985. Paul Wong received the Bell Canada Award in Video Art in 1992, the CHUM-NFB Expression Award celebrating diversity in the arts in 2003, and the Governor General’s Award in Visual and Media Arts in 2005. His work is included in major national and international collections, including the National Gallery of Canada and MoMA in New York. Concerned with technology, past and present, his early photographs explored non-silver processes and electrostatic works. These were followed by instant imaging photographs that culminated with 1 meter x 2 meter colour Polaroid prints. In the 1990’s, there were primarily two bodies of work from press cameras. The first was a fabricated document of Ramboys: a Bookless Novel finalized as large silver gelatin prints. The other was documented fiction/action within Manscapes - male-to-male cruising grounds completed in various modes of digital imaging. In the last five years, Evergon’s works include larger-than-life nudes of his mother, Margaret & I, and a selection of images gleaned from his lifetime trove of memorabilia accompanied with self-portraits, Chez Moi: Domestic Content. www.evergon.ca
