AspartoftheSummerSafeStreetsprogram,whichhonorsthelegacyof Princeton’sWitherspoon-Jacksonneighborhood,oneeventstoodoutas apowerfulmomentofreflection.OnAugust4,theforum“Community DiscussiononDEI:TheNationalPushBackandtheImpactonLocal Communities,”broughttogetherlocalleaders,advocates,andofficialsto examinethecurrentstateofdiversity,equity,andinclusion,both nationallyandlocallyinMercerCounty.
ModeratedbyJohnBailey,whoalsofoundedtheevent,andheldbeneath powerfulimagesofPaulRobeson,thediscussionwascandidandurgent, groundedinasharedbeliefthatchangeisstillpossibleifwearewillingto act.
Amongthepanelists,Rev.CharlesBoyerofGreaterMt.ZionAMEChurch ofTrentonemphasizedthatpoliticalempowermentmusthappenyearround,notjustonelectionday.“Youcannevernotfight,”hesaid, remindingattendeesthatcriticaldecisionsoftenhappenbeforevotesare cast.

MercerCountyExecutiveDanBensonsharedstepshisadministrationhas takentooperationalizeequity:launchingavendortrackingsystem, hostingminoritybusinessworkshops,expandinglanguageaccess,and revitalizingSouthBroadStreetinTrenton.Hisremarksshowedhow policycanbeatoolforinclusionandtransparency.
Still,speakersacknowledgedthatDEIisincreasinglyunderattack. CouncilmanLeightonNewlinaddressedthepoliticizationofwordslike “woke,”urgingactionoveravoidance:“Beingwokeisn’tenough.You muststayawakeanddosomethingwithit.”
CarolineClarke,attorneyandBoardPresidentofNotinOurTown,offered oneoftheevening’sstrongestcritiques,callingoutrecentlocaldecisions, suchasdivertingresourcesawayfromTrenton,asanexampleof performativeequity.Hermessagewasclear:theerosionofjusticeoften beginsclosetohome. Whatemergedfromtheforumwasacallformorethanawareness;real accountabilityandtangiblechangeareessential.Fromtownhallsto boardrooms,frombudgetstosidewalks,equitymustbepracticed,not justpromised.
AtYWCAPrinceton,thisconversationreaffirmedwhyourmissionto eliminateracismandempowerwomenismoreurgentthanever.TheSafe StreetsProgramisn’tjustacelebration;it’sacalltoaction.Whatwedo nowwillshapewhatcomesnext.

As Sheriff, Gannon is focused on strengthening relationships with agenciestokeepneighborhoods,schools,housesofworship,andbusinessessafe. Inthefirst100daysofhisadministration(currently inhisthirdelectedterm),hepartneredwith nonprofitentitiestocreateHopeOne,amobile substanceuseandmentalhealthdisorderoutreach thatstopsincommunitiestoprovidefreeNarcan trainingandaccesstoaddictionrecoveryand mentalhealthprograms.
What is redistricting? States like Texas and California have been all over the news lately for their attempts at rediistricing to find more “seats” for one political party over another. Let’s look at what redistricting is supposed to be used for and what is currently happening.
Perbipartisanpolicy.org,“redistrictingistheprocessbywhichtheboundariesof electoraldistricts,suchasforCongressandstatelegislatures,aredeterminedineach state.”Asweknow,Congressisbrokenupintotwolegislativechambers-theSenate andtheHouseofRepresentatives.Eachstatereceives2senatorsforequal representation,butthenumberforthehouseofrepresentativesisdeterminedbased onthepopulationofeachstate-thisprocessisspelledoutintheConstitution.Every tenyears,theentirecountrytakesacensustodeterminehowmanypeopleliveineach stateandhowmanyrepresentativestheyshouldreceive.Eachstatethendrawstheir legislativedistrictsbasedonthepopulationdensitythecensusshowedsoeach representativeofthatstatecoversroughlythesameamountofconstituents.While redistrictingis supposed tobedonewiththeintentofequalrepresentation, gerrymanderingisthestrategicdrawingofcongressionallinessoonepoliticalpartyof racehasmorerepresentationthananother.Redistrictingtypicallyhappenswithina yearortwoofanewcensus,whichmakeswhatishappeninginTexasaninteresting case.
What happens next? IfTexasRepublicanscontinuewiththeirplanto redistrict,theystandtopickupanadditionalfive seatsintheHouseofRepresentativesduringmidtermelectionsnextfall.CaliforniaGovernorGavin Newsomhaspromisedtoredrawthecongressional districtsinhisownstateofCaliforniaifthenewTexas mappassesandlegislationhasbeenintroducedto amendthestateConstitutioninNewYork.
