Thankfully i’ve had the opportunity to experience and study abroad, as well as outside my hometown at the Milan Polytechnic. During my master’s degree program, delivered in English, i was able to work with people from a variety of parts of the world, mostly from outside Europe: this opportunity allowed me to develop a remarkable ability to work in a team, even during the difficulties of the lockdown. My formation has always been driven by a strong curiosity that has led me to regularly try my hand at new challenges: learning how to use softwares without anyone teaching me, researching different graphic and expressive languages, understanding how to develop the narrative of a project in a creative way, trying my hand at digital illustration.

Carrara’ancient marble railway
DESIGN STUDIO
Professore: Sara Protasoni academic year 2021/2022
The project is based in the city of Carrara, in the area between the coast and the quarries. The focus of the design is the old railway station used for the marble route, now disused but of great historical, economical and cultural significance. But how can this area of town be given back a positive identity that can go beyond the environmental devastation caused by the excavations? What possible services could improve the quality of life? How can public space be given a new importance and recognisability?
Since the second half of the 19th century, the ‘marble railway’ has been a fundamental artery for the city: the transport of the primary commodity, marble, took place from the mountains to the sea via it and its role in the collective imagination is still predominant today.
The current town planning reflects the economic importance of the quarries, which in recent decades have been the cause of a gentrification that has led to a high concentration of industrial and commercial buildings between the excavation pole and the sea.
A pressing problem in this area is the risk of flooding: there is a lack of appropriate water management for the Carrione river, which passes right through the middle of the project area. Appropriate embankments and infrastructure are totally absent. This must be taken into account in the design phase by aiming for resilient interventions.

The site mapping shows that our project area has a strategic location: we are located at the point where the Apuan Alps come very close. The area is characterised by low residential and some commercial buildings, and is crossed by the Carrione stream. Around it we find the landscape of the Alps with its forests and cultivations.
Site mapping

The project area stretches from the edge of the old city centre to the Peghini yard, the former station of the marble railway. There are numerous traces of the iconic infrastructure on the site, such as the remains of tracks or bridges that were used to cross the Carrione.
The regeneration project focuses on ‘slow-mobility’ and the use of public spaces, so as to enhance this part of the city once again: by reconnecting all the ‘traces’ of the old railway, we can tell the story of the marble, and thus of the city and its citizens. The main poles are connected thanks to a safe and functional cycle-pedestrian path. The main green area, now abandoned, is recovered and transformed into a cycle park that becomes a ‘bridge’ between the former station area and the area that then descends towards the coast.
Schematisation of pre-existing traces in the vast green area that is now abandoned.

The track design is used for the design of the pedestrian cycle path within the park.
The layout of the cycle park creates new public spaces and meeting places in a natural way, acquiring the function of transit but also of rest, thus fulfilling the task of the infrastructure but also that of the square.
Park zoom in
The key point of the project is that it is articulated in its vertical dimension: to date, the topography of the area, which is irregular and full of unevenness, is limiting as it creates numerous barriers. The design solution complements this topographical layout and transforms it into richness, allowing the creation of articulated spaces rich in two-dimensionality.
The creation of an overhead cycle path allows a safe crossing of the road and face accessibility of the site: in this way a critical point is overturned and becomes an element of design recognition.
The existing market square is made fully pedestrianised and equipped with street furniture and appropriate vegetation. The social function of the square is re-established, making it the main entrance to the park.
To overcome the irregular topography, we have an elevated cycle and pedestrian bridge to connect the highest part of the park to another existing bridge, now pedestrian, to create a connection to the Alpine promenade.
At this point in the park we find traces of the pre-existing marble railway. The design choice is to give value to the remains, highlighted by the use of paving and made enjoyable by the street furniture.
In this zoom we have a second disused railway station, which becomes the starting point of the slow mobility route. The space is redeveloped into a square and the old structure becomes an exhibition pavilion on the history of marble.
MASTER THESIS
Professor: Andreu Arriola Madorell academic year 2022/2023
Project location: Rome, Lazio, Italy
The quarries of the Appia Antica park have played an important role in the history of Rome and still today represent a cultural and archaeological heritage of great value. It must be recognized that they directly affect architecture since they constitute a tangible historical document as well as a form of cultural heritage that must be valorised, as a great opportunity for valorising the landscape and the territory. This is conceivable according to the principles of landscape reintegration and integration with social, cultural and economic functions; always in the logic of reintegration and restoration.
RE-INVENTING ROME
through the abandone quarries along the Appia Antica
/A new scenario for the site of Casal Rotondo
Il Conte di Montecristo, Alexandre Dumas (1802-1870)
Framing
In the diagram, we can see the main city infrastructures, including the GRA ring road and the various main axes starting from the city centre. Among these is the Via Appia Antica, the ‘Regina Viarum’; which, starting from the Forum, served the connections to Brindisi.
The Via Appia in the stretch from the core of Ancient Rome, to well beyond the perimeter of the GRA, remains to this day a historical site of rare fascination lined with tombs, sepulchres and monumental complexes.
The fifth and sixth miles of the Regina Viarum are those in which the site of Casal Rotondo is framed. Characterised by a strongly concentrated historicity, in this section the Via remains easily usable for the user as a pedestrian, at least up to the point where it is ‘cut’ precisely by Via di Casal Rotondo.
Framing
Project site
From the cartography it is possible to see how the constitution of the Appia Antica Urban Park allowed the Via and the surrounding artefacts to ‘survive’ the suffocation of Roman urbanism. In this way it is integrated into the context of the original Agro Romano, passing through farms and cultivated land.
Anyone who does not stop at superficial observation must take note of the fact that the quarries dotting the surroundings of the Via Appia are part of an articulated and complex system that completes and enriches the dimension of the park. These quarries can be classified into underground quarries, of which the Caffarella is the main site, and open quarries: although the two types date back to different historical periods, they both contribute to forming the ‘other side’ of the Via Appia.

Pre-existing rural house rehabilitation
The remains of the pre-existing farmhouse are recovered through a rehabilitation and restoration operation. The architectural intervention consists of a light structure of wood and polycarbonate that is installed inside and around the perimeter of the walls, without ever touching them, giving new life and functionality to the site while maintaining the “ ruins value”.
In the lower forecourt, in front of the former aggregate chutes, the crusher structure is set on the traces of what had been a weighbridge. The architectural language is the same as that of the farmhouse element: only this time wood and polycarbonate, airy and light, depart from a solid concrete podium that unifies the whole and constitutes the most material part, just as the old walls do in the case of the farmhouse.
