Sancho & Me: For One Night Only

Written and told by award-winning actor and author Paterson Joseph (RSC, National Theatre), and accompanied by co-creator and musical director Ben Park

Charles Ignatius Sancho was born on a slave ship on the Atlantic Ocean in 1729. He became a writer, composer, shopkeeper and respected ‘man of letters’; the first man of African heritage to vote in Britain. He was painted by Gainsborough, and rubbed shoulders with Johnson, Hogarth and Handel, as well as meeting George II.

Built around Paterson’s novel The Secret Diaries of Charles Ignatio Sancho, with a score of Sancho's compositions with original new music, Sancho & Me is a true story. This ‘remarkable’ show explores ideas of belonging, language, education, slavery, commerce, violence, threat, politics, music and love, and where these themes intersect with Paterson's own story of growing up Black and British.

Enjoy sharing live musical experiences with your child in these fun-filled music classes for babies, toddlers and pre-schoolers.

Designed and delivered by classically trained professional musician Lou Bradbury, Little Notes classes are full of creative play and bursting with live music.

Blending instruments, groovy new songs and superb classics, Little Notes sessions provide 40 magical minutes in your busy week. Using puppets, percussion and sensory objects, music is brought to life for your child as you explore sounds and rhythms together.

⚫ The Lower Stalls, Box Office, and Riverside Kitchen are located on the ground floor. All other floors are accessible using the lift.

⚫ We offer a complimentary ticket on selected performances for an essential companion.

⚫ We offer a warm welcome for assistance dogs, please advise the Box Office when booking.

⚫ There are five wheelchair accessible spaces in the Main House and eight in the Mill Studio.
