AUGUST - NOVEMBER 2026

A new season awaits at YST! This season, we are delighted to welcome audiences to the YST Cube, our newest performance space. Designed as a flexible, contemporary space for experimentation, collaboration and new artistic experiences, it joins YST’s existing line-up of distinctive venues that bring music to life across campus.
From the return of YST Visiting Ensemble-in-Residence Boston Brass, to the 2026 edition of our Performers(‘) Present international artistic research symposium, Orchestral Institute concerts and more, we invite you to join us for the rest of the year as we celebrate the musical spirit that define our community—and as YST embarks on its next stage.
“YST nurtures not only eminent musicians, but also excellent leaders and entrepreneurs. It hones artistry, engages the community through music, and equips musicians with diverse capabilities for a rapidly-evolving 21st century.”

Inspirational life-affirming music-making is at the heart of the Yong Siew Toh Conservatory of Music (YST) at the National University of Singapore.
Founded in 2003, YST has established a reputation as Asia’s most exciting international conservatory, nurturing a new generation of musical leaders in performance, composition, production, and community engagement. Across their diverse stories, they share a common home: the close-knit YST community with its internationally diverse student body, world-class faculty, and warm connections with alumni and the industry.
20 years ago, we began our journey with the Bachelor of Music (BMus) programme as our core educational focus. Since then, our educational offering has expanded substantially to include graduate, continuing education, and young artist programmes, as well as course offerings for NUS undergraduates at large. Further, we engage the public in music through our extensive concert programming, community engagement initiatives, and the work of our Centre for Music and Health.

Boston Brass returns to Singapore—bringing their signature blend of bold programming, brilliant musicianshig and boisterous fun. Sharing the stage with YST faculty and students, the ensemble takes audiences on a musical journey from Renaissance masterworks to contemporary brass repertoire, featuring large brass ensemble, Latin American influences, and collaborative performances.
As YST’s Visiting Ensemble-in-Residence, Boston Brass’s annual residency extends beyond the concert hall through chamber and instrumental masterclasses, performances and mentorship. Driven by a longstanding commitment to advancing brass education, the ensemble continues to inspire YST students through artistic exchange while delighting audiences year after year.
Boston Brass is a Yamaha Performing Group and performs exclusively on Yamaha instruments. Boston Brass plays mouthpieces by Picket Brass.

“To me the meanest flower that blows can give Thoughts that do often lie too deep for tears.”
— William Wordsworth, from Ode: Intimations of Immortality
The most enduring echoes are not those we hear, but those we carry with us. In Echoes Beyond, the YST Orchestral Institute presents a programme of searching, transformation and renewal, reflecting on the enduring impact of a life well lived.
The evening opens with Charles Ives’ The Unanswered Question, a ‘cosmic landscape’ of humanity’s eternal search for meaning, followed by Richard Strauss’ Death and Transfiguration—a richly imagined depiction of an artist’s final moments, from earthly struggle towards transcendence and fulfilment.
We are then joined by YST Head of Piano Studies Professor Albert Tiu and Cello Faculty Professor Qin Li-Wei in two contrasting reflections on memory and place: Harry Sdraulig’s Fantasia on Waltzing Matilda, an imaginative reworking of Australia’s beloved bush ballad, and Sergei Rachmaninoff’s Spring Waters, a vocal romance capturing spring’s triumphant arrival.
The evening culminates in Rachmaninoff’s Piano Concerto No. 3, one of his most celebrated and demanding works, performed by YST Concerto Competition 2026 Prizewinner Jiang Qifan (BMus3)
Echoes Beyond honours the memory of longtime YST benefactor
Mr Tan Kah Tee, whose generosity transformed the educational journeys of countless YST students through his support of the Conservatory’s artistic and educational mission. His legacy lives on through the music, the students and the community he so deeply believed in.
Supported by the Shaw Foundation Ones to Watch series.

Join the YST Cello Studio for an evening celebrating the rich depth and expressiveness of the cello. Featuring guest cellist Wen-Sinn Yang and YST Cello faculty Professor Qin Li-Wei alongside YST’s talented student cellists, this edition of Cellissimo invites you to experience a specially curated programme—featuring varying chamber configurations to intimate dialogues and collective sonorities— as different generations of cellists come together on stage.
Reflecting the collaborative spirit of the Conservatory, look forward to an evening that celebrates the artistry, technical mastery and shared musicianship that define our community.

The Asia-Pacific Improvisers Symposium returns to YST, bringing together artists, educators, researchers and students from across the region for two days of performances, conversations and musical exchange.
Building on its inaugural edition in 2025, the symposium explores improvisation as both an artistic practice and a powerful medium for learning, collaboration and cultural connection. Through concerts, showcases and discussions, audiences are invited to discover how improvisation continues to evolve across diverse musical traditions, contemporary practices and new technologies throughout the Asia-Pacific.
Highlights include key performances by Richard Barrett, Weird Aftertaste, Jeonghyeon Joo, Jiyun Song, and Jisu Han, a forum discussion on Improvisation Methods and Practices in Southeast Asia, as well as a roundtable on Improvisation in Higher Music Education, offering fresh perspectives on improvisation’s role in performance, education and artistic practice.

The Performers(‘) Present international artistic research symposium returns to YST with its 2026 edition, Interweaving, bringing together performers, researchers, educators, composers and artists from around the world for four days of performances, dialogue and artistic exchange.
Inspired by the act of weaving as a metaphor for connection and creative possibility, Interweaving explores the relationships between Southeast Asian and Western artistic traditions; the intersections of research and performance; the role of music in wellbeing and community; and the evolving dialogue between human creativity and artificial intelligence.
The symposium features keynote presentations by Joseph N. Straus, Vanessa Tomlinson, and Piyawat Louilarpprasert, alongside performances and artistic contributions by internationally acclaimed composer Dai Fujikura, Mivos Quartet, and other distinguished guest artists.
Concert highlights include the Opening Concert: Living Threads; Mivos Quartet: Celebrating Reich at 90; and Last Words with the YST Orchestral Institute, curated by Joseph N. Straus—featuring a programme of works by Aaron Copland, Ruth Crawford Seeger, and Alban Berg.
Through concerts, keynote presentations, plenary sessions, panel discussions and artistic presentations, Interweaving celebrates the many ways music, research and creative practice intersect— fostering new perspectives, meaningful collaborations and conversations that transcend disciplines, cultures and traditions.

What does an artist leave behind? A final work is rarely just an ending; it can be a summation, a question, or the beginning of another conversation. In this evening, we explore how artistic voices become interwoven across time, as composers’ final reflections continue to speak long after they were first heard.
Aaron Copland’s Night Thoughts, one of the composer’s final works, opens the evening in a world of introspection and quiet contemplation in homage to fellow American composer Charles Ives. This follows with Ruth Crawford Seeger’s Suite for Woodwind Quintet, her penultimate composition before her death, revealing the inventive spirit of one of America’s most original modernist voices. At the heart of the programme is Alban Berg’s Violin Concerto, his final completed orchestral work, written in memory of Manon Gropius and dedicated to “the memory of an angel”—a work that transforms grief into profound beauty.
Presented by the YST Orchestral Institute under the baton of Principal Conductor Jason Lai, and featuring YST Head of Strings Professor Qian Zhou on violin, Associate Professor Ning An on piano, guest musicians Gaolat Quintet and narrator Joseph N. Straus, Last Words offers a rare opportunity to experience these deeply personal final statements in one single evening.

2026 marks the 150th and 120th birth anniversaries of Manuel de Falla and Dmitri Shostakovich respectively. This concert brings together the YST community in a blockbuster celebration of two of the twentieth century’s most distinctive musical voices, through landmark chamber works that continue to shape chamber music repertoire today.
Featuring YST Head of Strings Professor Qian Zhou (violin) and Head of Piano Studies
Professor Albert Tiu (piano), alongside YST faculty, students and alumni, the programme includes Falla’s Suite Populaire Espagnole, Shostakovich’s Piano Quintet, and more works that showcase the striking contrasts, expressive depth and enduring influence of these two composers.
13 Nov (Fri), 7:30pm | YST Concert Hall | $26
A passage can be many things: a journey from one place to another, the passing of time, a musical phrase, or the movement of the body. This unique collaboration expands the traditional orchestral concert by exploring the connections between music, gesture and dance, revealing new dimensions of two iconic masterpieces.
Stravinsky’s Divertimento from Le Baiser de la Fée (The Fairy’s Kiss) lies at the heart of this exploration. Inspired by Hans Christian Andersen’s The Ice Maiden and conceived as a tribute to Tchaikovsky, it transforms melodies from the earlier composer’s songs and piano works into a vivid new musical language, crossing boundaries between past and present, memory and imagination. Mozart’s Symphony No. 40 offers a complementary journey, its emotional intensity and remarkable craftsmanship providing fertile ground for fresh exploration through movement and gesture.
Working alongside the creative team, the YST Orchestral Institute musicians become active participants in this artistic process, discovering how movement can deepen musical expression and enrich orchestral storytelling.
Under the direction of Lien Boon Hua, with creative collaborators choreographer Sudhee Liao and YST faculty Jonathan Shin and Professor Karst de Jong, Passage! invites the audience to experience the orchestra as a living, expressive ensemble, where music, movement and storytelling become one.
