A message from our CEO The results are in: We’re making a difference Over the years, our organization has always had the best interests of children in mind. We’re constantly testing and evaluating what we do to find out not only what works, but what works best, and what helps children achieve lasting success. Almost two decades ago, we learned we were letting our older children down. We were discharging them from foster homes or residential centers, and shortly after, they were acting up, getting in trouble with the law, not going to school or worse. To address this serious issue, we began our transitional living program, now called YVLifeSet, in 1999 through help from The Day Foundation. We stepped in to assist these youth, help them learn to navigate new adulthood — get transportation, find a place to live and get scholarships and aid for school. We told them to set goals and we’d help them achieve them. At the time, the program was paid for solely through the Day Foundation grant and donations from our own employees. Today, the state of Tennessee has partnered with us to help ensure every child aging out of foster care has access to our YVLifeSet program, and the results are dramatically different for those who participate in the program. Recently MDRC, a nonprofit, nonpartisan education and social policy research firm, released the first results of their rigorous study of the YVLifeSet program. The largest random assignment evaluation of a program serving this population,

Since 1999, YVLifeSet has helped more than 8,000 youth aging out of state custody or other care arrangements successfully transition to independence. Participation in the YVLifeSet program is voluntary. Specially trained YVLifeSet specialists meet with YVLifeSet participants at least once a week — and more often when needed — wherever is most convenient for the young person. Specialists are available 24/7 to help the young adult.
