FAITH IN SPORTS NEXT PLAY MENTALITY

Philippians 3:13-14

Brothers and sisters, I do not consider myself yet to have taken hold of it. But one thing I do: Forgetting what is behind and straining toward what is ahead, I press on toward the goal to win the prize for which God has called me heavenward in Christ Jesus.

In sports, mistakes are unavoidable. A dropped pass, a missed shot, a strikeout, or a fall during a routine can happen to even the best athletes. What separates strong competitors from the rest isn’t perfection, it’s how quickly they reset and move forward. Coaches often call this the “next play mentality.”

The next play mentality means refusing to let one mistake define the rest of the game. Athletes are taught to shake it off, refocus, and be ready for what’s coming next. Dwelling on the past only slows reaction time, weakens confidence, and hurts the team. Success comes from staying present and prepared.

The Bible encourages this same mindset in our faith. In Philippians, Paul reminds us to forget what is behind and press forward toward the goal God has set before us. This doesn’t mean ignoring lessons from the past—it means not allowing past failures to control our future. Just like in sports, growth happens when we learn, adjust, and move on.

This mindset applies beyond game moments. In practice, athletes make hundreds of mistakes while learning new skills. Those errors aren’t signs of weakness; they’re part of the process. Spiritually, God calls us to grow in the same way—by allowing grace to guide us forward rather than guilt holding us back.

Having a next play mentality also affects how athletes treat their teammates. Encouragement after a mistake builds trust and confidence, while criticism only adds pressure. When players support each other, they reflect Christ’s love in action. Colossians 3:13 reminds us to forgive one another just as the Lord forgave us—a principle that strengthens both teams and faith.

Even victories require a next play mentality. Celebrating is important, but staying humble and focused prepares athletes for the next challenge. Every game, practice, and season is part of a longer journey, and each moment is an opportunity to honor God through effort, attitude, and perseverance.

Faith teaches us that God’s grace is new every day. When athletes embrace that truth, they learn they are never defined by one bad play—or one big win. What matters most is the effort, character, and faith they bring into the next moment.

KADEN PAULEY: BUILT FOR THE NEXT PLAY

Stepping onto the field with confidence and determination, Kaden Pauley is quickly proving he belongs. Wearing No. 23, Kaden is making his first season of tackle football count as a cornerback for Fairland East / Fairland Dragon. After previously competing in flag football, he’s embraced the challenge of a more physical game, approaching every practice and matchup eager to learn, improve, and give his best effort.

From Proctorville, Ohio, Kaden has taken pride in growing into his role on defense and understanding what it takes to succeed at the tackle level. Each snap presents a new opportunity to sharpen his skills, and he continues to rise to the challenge with focus and hustle. His commitment paid off when he finished a game with the most tackles—an achievement that highlighted his awareness, effort, and willingness to step up when his team needed him most.

As a cornerback, Kaden values preparation and technique, studying the game to better understand his position. He looks up to his favorite player, CeeDee Lamb, watching how he moves, competes, and stays confident under pressure. A proud supporter of the Dallas Cowboys, Kaden channels that same excitement and passion into every practice and game day.

For Kaden, the best part of being on a team is learning something new each year and becoming a better player alongside his teammates. He enjoys growing together, celebrating improvement, and pushing one another to reach higher levels of play. That team-first mindset continues to fuel his development on and off the field.

Away from football, Kaden enjoys trips to Malibu Jack’s and building LEGO sets, showing the same creativity and patience he brings to the game. With a love for football, a strong desire to learn, and steady encouragement from his family, Kaden Pauley is building a solid foundation for a bright future in the sport.

PLAYER PROFILE

At just 4 years old, Elias Curtis is already making his mark on the mat as a determined young wrestler for the Fairland Dragons Age 4 Youth League. From Proctorville, Ohio, Elias is in his very first year of wrestling, and even in a short time, he has shown impressive effort, focus, and a love for learning the sport. Whether he’s competing or cheering on his teammates, Elias brings enthusiasm and heart to everything he does.

One of Elias’s favorite parts of the season is simply wrestling itself, along with spending time with the teammates who have quickly become close friends. He looks up to those around him, especially his teammates Aker, Ridge, and Lawson, and appreciates the guidance and encouragement of his coaches — Coach Q, Coach Adam, Coach Ush, Coach Megan, and Coach B. His favorite teams to watch are Ohio State and the Cincinnati Bengals, adding to his growing love for athletics and competition.

What truly sets Elias apart, though, is his character. When asked about the best part of being on a team, his answer is simple and meaningful: “Praying together, and becoming friends.” Off the mat, Elias enjoys preschool, drawing, church, playing with cars and Nerf guns, and spending quality time with his family. His biggest role models are Jesus, his mom and dad, and his coaches — people who shape both his faith and his attitude toward the sport.

With a positive spirit, respect for others, and a strong support system behind him, Elias Curtis is off to a great start in his wrestling journey. As he continues to grow and learn, it’s clear that this young Dragon is building more than just athletic skills — he’s developing values that will carry him far both on and off the mat.
