In September, I was invited to join a group of friends at the Eat Real Festival at Jack London Square. I was hesitant to go. I hadn’t been there in years, and I remember that there wasn’t a whole lot going on back then. It turns out, the square has been completely transformed. I had a such a great time, I decided to make a trip back. This time, instead of Friday night, I headed into Oakland on a Sunday morning when the farmers’ market was in full swing. In addition to the dozens of typical farmers’ market vendors, there were lots of specialty hot food vendors with choices perfect for or an impromptu picnic along the waterfront. If you’re going early, bring a yoga mat or towel wel to participate in a free hour-long yoga class at 9:30am, year-round. After spending some time at the market, I headed adedd towards the ferry entrance to take a tour of the Potomac. If you’ve ve taken the ferry from Jack London Square to San Francisco, you may have noticed the Potomac docked to the right of the ferry entrance. The now restored ship once served as the Presidential Yacht for FDR. R. Known as the “Floating White House,� Roosevelt spent weekends ds sailing up and down the Potomac River, fishing with family and entertaining ertaining various heads of state. After a period of ruin (it sank at Treasure easure Island after a drug bust), the yacht was restored and now includes ludes a small museum dedicated to Roosevelt’s presidency. Guestss can embark on a one-hour dockside tour of the yacht or enjoy a docent-led narrated cruise around the San Francisco Bay. After enjoying lunch outside, I stopped by to check heck out Jack London Square’s newest tenant, Plank. The 50,000 00 square foot restaurant and entertainment center features interactive tive games, 18 lanes of bowling, 40 HDTVs and an outdoor beer garden with a

selection of brews and bourbon, bocce ball courts and fire pits. The menu includes gourmet tacos, burgers and hearth-oven pizzas. Extend your day in Jack London Square with a visit to Rosenblum Cellars’ tasting room, or have a drink at the very place that Jack London made notes for future books—Heinolds’ First and Last Chance Saloon, built in 1883 from the timbers of a whaling ship. Bicycle, canoe and kayak rentals are all available at Jack London Square, and the bike shop can provide you with some popular routes, including the new Bay Bridge bike trail. If you have meatloaf on your mind, head to Zephyr Grill & Bar in Livermore. Their recipe features an individual loaf of ground beef wrapped in applewood smoked bacon and baked with a molasses glaze. As far as meatloaf goes, it’s a home run. It is just the slightest bit crunchy on the outside while moist and full of flavor on the inside. Zephyr’s Baja tacos come in at a close second. I enjoyed the grilled shrimp version in warm corn tortillas with ranch slaw, fresh pico de gallo and avocado salsa. They are billed as spicy, but they aren’t very hot, so don’t let that deter you. From shrimp and grits and crawfish étouffée to fried chicken and jambalaya, Clementine’s in San Ramon has a menu with Louisiana-style comfort food written all over it. Their jambalaya recipe features andouille sausage, tender bites of chicken, bell peppers, onion and rice. Shrimp is an extra, but go ahead and add it. It completes the meal perfectly. Special Sunday dinners at my grandmother’s meant prime rib, and Clementine’s features a tender, smoked version that comes with creamed spinach and choice of potatoes. Parenting at any time of the year can be difficult when parents have separated. This is especially true as the holidays approach. The best way to ensure happy peaceful exchanges of the children during the year end period is to exercise productive behaviors when communicating and dealing with the other parent. Here are some approaches to consider when you are faced with difficult situations in parenting. Switch visitation nights if your ex needs to do this. Don’t give him or her a hard time about it. Staying flexible in developing a parenting plan is the best way to allow for better cooperation between you and the other parent. It may also benefit you at times when you might need a change in the schedule. Say a friendly hello in the driveway when he or she comes to get the kids. Cordial conversation is never a bad idea. Behaving in this fashion particularly in front of the children supports the fact that the parents have their focus on behaving as best they can to assist the children in having a good time with both parents. The marriage or relationship may be over, but the parenting isn’t. Always look for the higher ground on how you express yourself to the other parent, especially in front of the children. You can control the outcome and the tone of how a parenting exchange takes place. I hope these suggestions will be useful to you. These tools have worked quite well during my 35 years of helping family law clients deal with parenting issues.
